In 1857, a French court acquitted author Gustave Flaubert of obscen-ity for his serialized novel “Madame Bovary.”

In 1931, aviator Amelia Earhart married publisher George P. Putnam in Noank, Connecticut.

In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized a flag for the office of the vice president.

In 1948, Gen. Dwight D. Eisen-hower resigned as Army chief of staff; he was succeeded by Gen. Omar Bradley.

In 1962, President John F. Ken-nedy imposed a full trade embargo on Cuba.

In 1971, women in Switzerland gained the right to vote through a national referendum, 12 years after a previous attempt failed.

Karen Sue (Prowant) and William (Bill) Jones, of rural Findlay, are celebrating 50 years of marriage. Karen was born in McComb, Ohio, to Paul and Datha (Smeed) Prowant, of Dupont, Ohio, and Bill was born in Findlay to Walter and Clara (Agin) Jones, of Benton Ridge. They were joined in marriage on February 4, 1967, by Rev. Walter R. Gatton, at the E. Foulke Avenue Church of God in Findlay, Ohio.

The couple has two children: Wendy (David) Foulke and Marcus (Sherry) Jones, both of Perrysburg, Ohio. They enjoy eight grandchildren: Alex (Lynden) Foulke, and Kirsten Geraghty, of Sylvania; Reese, Tate, and Brynne Foulke, of Perrysburg; Dalton and Chloe Jones, of Findlay; and Kayla (Joe) Moreland, of Destin, Florida. Great grandchildren are Paisley and Cooper Moreland.

Bill is retired from Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. having served as a chemist and technical manager. He currently serves as the Blanchard Township Fiscal Offi cer and the Volunteer Coordinator of the Hancock County Master Gardeners. Karen is retired from the Blanchard Valley Health System, having served

as a Registered Nurse, Emergency Department Director, and Chief Nursing Offi cer. They are members of the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Benton Ridge, and are currently involved in many volunteer activities.

The couple recently went on a Panama Canal cruise tocommemorate their anniversary and will celebrate with family in June at Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming.

Mr. John Cole and the former Debra King were married February 14, 1957 in Rushville, Indiana.

Mr. Cole is retired from farming, welding and metal fabrication. Mrs. Cole is retired from Fantasy Wedding Creations.
