SESSION 1 (EARLY) 6:45 PM - 7:45PM

R WHAT IS JEWISH ART?Instructor: Larry Silver Register for Larry Silver’s Session 1 Class:Click Herehttps://zoom.us/j/99530281748

Debates among scholars have raged about whether there really is anything that can properly be called "Jewish art." Is it limited only to works that depict Jewish themes? Does it matter whether the artist identifies as Jewish?

How can one account for works by Jewish art that don't look very different

from the works of their contemporaries? This talk will use a few case studies to consider these issues and propose a solution to the dilemma, particularly for 20th-century painters.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Larry Silver is Art History professor emeritus from Penn, specializing in Renaissance-era art and also topics in modern Jewish art. Professor Silver is an engaging speaker who has given popular talks at Beth Or in the past.

R GENEALOGY BASICSInstructor: Moriah Amit & Tyi Marx Register for Moriah Amit & Tyi Marx’s Session 1 Class :Click Herehttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0sd-mgrzwqHNPWEpJqQMB4o3w5XyEd-VBh

Genealogy Basics gives beginner or intermediate family history researchers the tools and approaches to work online and get a better and more satisfying experience knowing what free resources are out there, and how a librarian can help them if they have questions as they go. We share anecdotes and tips from our own experiences and ask participants to share and encourage each other and ask preliminary questions.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Moriah Amit is the Senior Genealogy Librarian at The Center for Jewish History. The CJH in New York City illuminates

history, culture, and heritage. The Center provides a collaborative home for five partner organizations: American Jewish Historical Society, American Sephardi Federation, Leo Baeck Institute, Yeshiva University Museum, and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research. The partners’ archives comprise the world’s largest and most comprehensive archive of the modern Jewish experience outside of Israel. The Center’s experts are leaders in unlocking archival material for a wide audience through the latest practices in digitization, library science, and public education.

The women of the Hebrew Bible famously don’t get as much ink spilled about them as their male counterparts. But that’s not the end of their stories. Join Rabbi Bonder in an exploration of Modern Hebrew poetry written by women who breathed new life into

the stories of the Matriarchs, Prophetesses, and other heroic women of the Hebrew Bible.

SESSION 2 (LATE) 8PM - 9PM

R IRAN, ISRAEL AND THE UNITED STATES: A VIEW FROM HISTORYInstructor: John Ghazvinian Register for John Ghazvinian’s Session 2 Class:Click Herehttps://zoom.us/j/92359037934

In recent years, tensions between Iran and the United States have been higher than ever, with Israel usually playing a key role in the drama. Disagreements about Iran’s nuclear program, as well as its regional activities, have often escalated to the verge of open conflict. However, too often, debates and analyses about

these issues take place in atmosphere that is absent of historical context. In this talk, John Ghazvinian, a historian of US-Iran relations, situates the relations between these three countries — and especially the ongoing controversy about Iran’s nuclear program — in a wider historical narrative. In the process, he argues that the nuclear issue is largely a distraction from deeper and more strategic considerations.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: John Ghazvinian is Executive Director of the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania. He is an author, historian and former journalist, specializing in the history of US-Iran relations. He has written for such publications as Newsweek, The Nation, the Sunday Times and the Huffington Post, and has taught modern Middle East history at a number of colleges and universities in the Philadelphia area. He earned his doctorate in history at Oxford University, and was the recipient of a "Public Scholar" fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities in 2016-2017, as well as a fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation's special initiative on Islam in 2009-2010.

R GOOD RELIGION/BAD RELIGIONInstructor: Rabbi Gregory S. MarxRegister for Rabbi Marx’s Session 2 Class:Click Herehttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEpcuiorD8vGdD2xn7S-HgCa0cOVRSGyszo

Join Rabbi Marx for a frank discussion on the makings of bad religion. From the denial of science, a singular leader who is without fault, to the division of the world between children of light and the spawn of darkness, bad religion has done irreparable harm to societies in the past and is threatening our world once again with potentially terrible consequences.

R PRESERVING YOUR FAMILY PHOTOS AND DOCUMENTS AT HOMEInstructors: Tyi Marx & Moriah AmitRegister for Tyi Marx & Moriah Amit’s Session 2 Class:Click Herehttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYqf-yhqT0rGt2Tg82aDGHdeSYzVzC-Xi-V

Preservation of Photos and Documents is a practical workshop to inform participants how they can keep family documents safe and in good condition. A reference librarian demonstrates how our own archives in the building have dealt with storage and display questions. Participants are encouraged to consider ways to keep their family heirlooms in the best condition possible for future generations.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS: Tyi Marx is an expert Reference Librarian & Moriah Amit is the Senior Geneology Librarian for The Center for Jewish History Reading Room and Genealogy Institute. Refer to session 1 (above) for details about the CJH.
