ACT Practice Worksheets

I wanted to take some time to go over these ACT practice worksheets that you completed some time ago…

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

This worksheet is a fun play on the NCAA men’s division I basketball tournament, better known as “March Madness”.

This worksheet will incorporate things you learned in Chapter 5: “Ions and Ionic Compounds”, as well as molar mass.

You can use the “ion” app on the iPads and the “stable ions” charts that I gave you to help you complete the worksheet.

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

Rules:1st round: write the formula after the name.

The most number of atoms wins the bracket.2nd round: the greater number of ions wins the

bracket.Semi-finals: higher charge on anion wins the

bracket.Finals: larger molar mass wins the tournament!

Choose a partner, get your iPads, and we’ll do the first one together…

1st RoundSodium acetate: Na only has 1 valence electron and will lose it to

form a 1+ ion. Use “ion” app or table on pg. 178 of your book to

find the acetate polyatomic ion.Na+ + CH3COO- NaCH3COO

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

Sodium acetate = NaCH3COOWrite the formula after the name…How many atoms are there in the formula?

8

Remember, the most number of atoms wins the bracket. If potassium thiocyanate has less than 8 atoms in the formula, sodium acetate wins the 1st bracket and advances to the 2nd round.

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

2nd RoundFor the 2nd round, the greater number of ions

with the bracket.

Sodium acetate only has 2 ions (Na+ and CH3COO-) so if the other formula has more than 2 ions, sodium acetate will lose.

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

Semi-finals

Look at the charge on the anion (the negative ion).

The most charge on the anion will advance to the final round.

Sweet 16 Chemistry Compound Tournament

FinalsTo win the tournament, the formula has to have the

highest molar mass.Remember, to find molar mass, just add up the

mass of each element in the molecule.Example: H2O: H: 2 (1.01)

O: 16.000 18.02 g/mol
