-By Mike Woodard [email protected] Alabama’s high school foot-ball playoff, the Super Six, is coming to Tuscaloosa December 3 and 4, a Thursday and Friday. The city of Tuscaloosa fought hard to take these playoffs from Legion Field and Birmingham...the result will be that an expected $50 million in money will come to Tuscaloosa for these events. The dates were scheduled so as to not interfere with college foot-ball games or the SEC Championship game which could have reduced the attendance, and thereby value, of having the playoff games here.
Localhotelswillfillforthatweekend as people from across the state descend on Tuscaloosa to cheer their favorite high school team to a state championship from 1A to 6A. Volunteers are being sought as there will be a need for around 150 people to work Bryant Denny Sta-dium. The Tuscaloosa Fire Depart-ment, and Tuscaloosa Police Depart-mentpresenceatthegamesfortrafficand emergency purposes was a part of the deal which landed these games in Tuscaloosa. Bryant Denny Stadium is, by far, the most attractive and modern football stadium facility in the State of Alabama, so this makes perfect sense to bring these games to Tuscaloosa. Bringing an additional $50 million to town is a big deal for the business community here too. This will help hotels, restaurants, and retail establishments. To volunteer to help make the Super Six a success in Tuscaloosa, contact Don Staley at the Tuscaloosa Sports Foundation at 394-0700.

- By Mike Woodard [email protected] DoctorHowardWinfield,a pioneer in new robotic assisted surgery has come to Tuscaloosa to workatDCH.Dr.Winfieldworkswith “four arms” and procedures can be done with precision down to 10 or 12timesmagnification. The “robot” is controlled byDr.Winfieldviacomputercontrolled actuators. The actuators have mechanical wrists which enable the devices to move accurately for precision surgeries. The method enables doctors to utilize minimal invasive techniques. Less tissue is cut and the recover is quicker and less painful. The system, named DaVinciTM, is a dramatic improvement over past robotic systems which doctor’s viewed on 2 dimensional screens. This new system givesDr.Winfielda3dimensionalview of the operating area. Stitching up a tiny blood vessel at 12X magnificationappearsonscreenthesize of household plumbing! The robotic “hands” can twist and turn much further than human hands, in addition to being tiny enough to be
inserted via laparoscopy. The small incisions which these tiny robotic hands require reduce the invasiveness of surgery. Smaller incisions mean fewer infections, and healing time is reduced when less tissue is cut. Bleeding, and blood loss, is reduced using robotics. Also, shorter hospital stays and recovery time periods result from the use of robotics. Dr.Winfieldspecializesin
urology, but the robotic computers systems are gaining popularity in many different surgical procedures. The doctor sits at, almost in, a computer station which includes small hand controls which he moves to move the robotic “hands” within the patient. He can see the movement inside of the patient via a camera attached to the robotic hands inside of the patient. A suture so small that it would be barely visible to the human eye can be performed with the same speed as if it was outside the body and several times the size of a regular needle and thread. Dr.Winfieldwillbeavailableto medical students at UA for training. This leading edge medical technology will improve patient outcomes and increases the sophistication of surgeries in Tuscaloosa.
ARTUR DAVIS TO SPEAK TO 1ST TIMERS – Rep. Artur Davis will speak at the “Negotiating the Maze,” event for first generation scholars Friday, Aug. 14 at 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. The event is designed to be inspirational and motivational for UA students who are the first in their families to attend college. Davis is a first generation scholar and a Montgomery native.

EDITOR’S COMMENTS...
It’s so easy for people to forget where they came from. Then they get all high and mighty. Take a person who’s struggling and trying to find a way to survive….give them a big success story, a pile of cash, and within three months they’ll tell you how everybody else should just pull themselves up by their bootstraps...having completely forgotten how badly they needed, and felt and just knew they deserved, help just a short time ago. Self righteousness is about the easiest character trait to assume there is. I hear them speak of others about their religion, politics, money, vehicles, homes...as if they were better than the person they were just a few years ago. And it makes me wonder where all those feeling of compassion and camaraderie go. People who said they’d never forget their friends and family...forget friends and family. People who claimed that they’d always know what it’s like, forget what it’s like. They take their gains, which are ALWAYS on the backs of their fellow man, because success comes from others pushing money toward you rather than taking it from you, and it becomes all about self. In a way I understand it. I’m tired of fighting the fight, and struggling the struggle...and if I found a way to get ahead in a big way maybe I’d feel like I deserved it, and that it was rightfully mine...and forget the plight of others, and especially the plight I myself had endured. Wishing to forget. You see this in managers that cut everyone else’s pay or job before they would cut their own...they cut everyone else’s benefits before they cut their own. Or those who cut all things charitable rather than cut into that which is for and about them. Perhaps we have created an “It’s all about me” society with our wealth and consumerism. It makes for a lot of small people who think big of themselves. Not realizing how small they become to others. And it makes for a lot of suffering for those who the winds of fate are blowing against. But it is they who become the wiser. For from struggles comes character. From need comes charity. It is the reason the poor give a disproportionate share of their wealth to charity compared to the wealthy. For the poor life is just simply not all about them...it’s about the greater community and family. For too many of the wealthy it becomes more an us versus them mentality. Inequity has ebbed and flowed over the history of mankind. Each era, and on an individual basis, compassion has champions and trolls. And each of us decides which we will be. We are surrounded by those who ask more than they give, who overvalue their worth from power of position. A man needs surgery, so $100,000+ is extracted from him in a week’s time. Years of earnings for a common man extracted from him in a week. The surgery was a great feat, a mastery of modern technology, a success by valuable skilled hands. But the result is poverty for the man who is saved to continue life. Was it a reasonable outcome for one to have nothing, and the other a castle? These are the type questions that face this generation. It becomes easy for the man in the castle to forget he too came from paupers. Will he eventually only have paupers to serve his skills too? If you look back far enough, we were all poor. Some have forgotten or never knew, but others remain painfully aware. Charity should rise within you with your fortunes and gifts. The world is about more than one. Mike Woodard, PublisherTuscaloosa Sun

3 Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breast3-4 cans (10.5 oz) Cream of Chicken soup1-1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese1/2 cup milk (this depends on how much soup used)1pkg 8 count crescent rolls
Chicken Crescent Roll PocketsThis recipe was brought to me by our Account Executive, Jodi Parden. I made it last weekend, it really was as easy and delicious as she said. Hope ya’ll enjoy it as well. Thanks Jodi
Instructions:1. Boil chicken until completely done. (I chopped mine and cooked in butter & seasoning). When cool break into small pieces.2. In a large bowl mix soup, cheese & milk. If you want lots of sauce use 4 cans of soup, I used 3 and it made plenty for us. Mix enough milk to thin the soup to gravy consistency.3. Put a small amount of mixture into a 13x9 Pyrex. Take one crescent roll at a time and flatten a bit. Put a good scoop of the chicken in the middle of the roll, then roll to the large end of the crescent. Put in Pyrex. Do not let the pockets touch in the pan. Pour remaining sauce over the pockets.4. Bake at 350
o for 30-45 minutes, until browned. Serve with white rice.

AUGUSTWest Alabama Gardening
- With Candy Taylor Vegetables. It may seem impossible with the hot temperatures, but it’s about time to start planting seeds for beets, carrots, lettuce, peas, radish, spinach, ruta-baga, turnips and collards. All we need is that fi rst cooling spell. It’s important to know the number of days before the fi rst frost so that you won’t miss the correct planting dates. Count backwards from your date. Believe it or not, there are four expected fi rst frost days in Tuscaloosa County according to where you live...between October 30 and November 10th. It is very important to know the life cycle of each crop you plan to plant so that you can harvest before fi rst frost. And therefore you plant in late August or early September for most crops in order to harvest before that fi rst frost. Due to the heat of summer hanging around during the critical sprout stages, watering in these hot dogs days is the key to fall crop success. Many people put boards down along side the plant rows because they’ll protect from excess sun and heat, plus hold moisture in up under them...remove them later as it cools.

Children’s Corner
It is a widely held belief that the earlier children learn a foreign language, the quicker they will be able to pick it up and achieve fluency. The same is also true when it comes to teaching children about money and developing financial fluency. Teaching children from an early age how to save and budget in a fun and educational way can lay the foundations for sound money management later in life. Consider also the type of signals about money that your child picks up upon. You may feel it’s important to let your child know family money matters are private, and not for discussion outside the home. If however, as parents you talk in hushed tones over bills and bank statements, your child may deduce that finances are something to be secretive and furtive about. Similarly, if they pick up some stress and anxiety over money, this too is a value that can be carried forward into adult life. 7 tips to help teach children about money1) Fun, fun, Fun - make a game of both saving and spending. If only spending money is fun then they will not associate any pleasure with saving.2) Routines - When they receive money as presents or from the tooth fairy establish a routine, like putting some or all of it in their piggy bank or savings account. They will most likely take these traditions forward into their own families.3) Consistency - If you pay pocket money in return for helping around the house make sure they actually do the work. Even very young children can be responsible for tidying away their own toys or clothes. It’s a good idea to pay a set amount on a regular day but encourage their entrepreneurial side by giving them the opportunity to earn more if they seek it.4) Look after the pennies - Turning off the lights, saving their pennies and giving small donations to charity collections are small things that they can do to create positive habits which may last a lifetime. Ensure that you explain why you are doing it and what the benefits are. Charitable giving can illustrate to your child that there are others less fortunate and introduce the idea to be grateful that they have more than enough.5) Consequences - When your children ask for something, rather than say no. Ask them if they would like to buy it from their own money and explain what the consequences are. You may find that they are more reluctant to spend their own money than they are yours!6) Praise, praise, praise - We may learn by our mistakes but by praising we reinforce positive behaviour and will encourage children to do the right thing out of choice ‘because it feels good’. This can be applied to saving, spending wisely and giving to charity.7) Spend and save - when your children are receiving pocket money, teach them to save either some or all of it. It is always a good idea to let them spend a little however, as this encourages a work-like mind which will set them in good stead later in life.

Women’s ForumDo Skin-Care Products really work?
An in-depth look Everyday you are hit with a million things that tell what to do and what not to for your precious skin. There might even be times when you may be walking past aisles and aisles of beauty products that only leave you wondering what would be best for your face and body. Trying and switching skin care products from time to time may leave you asking yourself a question that do skin care products truly make a difference to your face value? Well, the answer is simple imagine yourself going through a week without using any of your daily skin routine. Unimaginable? Your skin would not be its same clean, glow-ing self were it not for the care you take with your little beauty tool set. Take a check of what are those skin care products that allow you to be your best beauty and what exactly do they do for your skin.Face Wash A face wash is the most basic beauty product that every woman must have. The face wash lifts oil and dirt from the face, keeping it fresh without drying. A face wash, un-like soap, does not dry out and helps keep skin supple with minimum trouble. A face wash is a basic necessity or the first step towards any skin care routine.Deep Cleanser The deep cleanser is a creamy lotion that penetrates deep into the skin upon application and removes dirt. Using a deep cleanser for removing make-up is the best thing you can do for your skin after having make up for hours on your face. A good deep cleanser helps the skin breathe and keeps it clean.Facial Toner A facial toner closes your skin pores and replenishes your skin with essential vi-tamins and skin improving ingredients. It tones the skin and gives it the brilliant shine that reflects health and beauty. Facial toners available in variants lemon, orange etc are great to keep the skin tingling fresh.Moisturizer Daily application of moisturizer can go a long way in keeping the skin supple and maintain its elasticity. It protects, rejuvenates and nourishes the skin inside out. A good moisturizer chosen according to the skin type can gives skin the much required love and pampering it deserves. Investing in a good moisturizer means getting young vibrant skin.Astringent Another humble skin care products is none other than your astringent. For those who have oily skin an astringent is a blessing. The astringent helps tighten skin pores and keeps the skin oil-free. Using an astringent before stepping out of the house can help control black heads and pimples. You can freeze your astringent in an ice tray and slide a cube of astringent after applying some moisturizer. This helps make optimum use of an astringent. Squeeze a few drops of astringent in a mug of chilled water and splash it over your face and see how much it makes you glow.Night Creams Skin repairs itself at night and therefore this is the best time to replenish tired skin. A good night cream gives your skin that much required boost. The comfort of a night cream to tired and dull skin can help repair the damage and let the skin breathe through the night. A daily night cream is a treat for your skin and it truly gives you the much required `beauty sleep`.Sunscreen This is a skin care product you just cannot do without. A sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful UV rays of the sun and shields the skin from aging and forming wrinkles earlier. A good sunscreen with the right SPF can be your best friend in the sun. A sunscreen can save you from unnecessary tanning and maintain your complexion. Skin care products do work provided you use them regularly and religiously. Ev-ery beauty product serves the purpose of keeping your skin bright and young. Just ensure you buy reputed and trustworthy brands. Every woman is an example of unique beauty, skin care products only make you show it to the world!

This track is what I call a twisty. There’s a lot of comedy out there about NASCAR being nothing but a bunch of left hand turns...but not at Watkins Glenn. I visited this track when I was 11 years old back in 19#*...is that a typing error? The track is shaped like a big heeled shoe with 4 right turns and 7 left turns….that’s a lot of turns for 2.5 miles. Watkins Glenn is actually a strong Indy Car or sports car race track, more on the lines of Barber’s Speedway in Birmingham...but it has it’s NASCAR appeal. I am reminded that NASCAR’s origins were moonshine runners...and I assure you they didn’t always take a left! Last week’s results from Po-cono was a slew of names out of the top 5 in the cup point standings. Denny Hamlin took it, and Montoya, second, were on up the list, but other names: Clint Bowyer, Sam Hornish, etc. haven’t been in the running for the cup. It’s good to see diversity in the top ten now and then.
The Pocono race didn’t change any standings in the top 4 due to the top fi ve from the race. Denny Hamlin and moved up of course, but Stewart, Johnson, Gordon, and Busch remained in there positions respectively. I love Watkins Glenn...one of my favorites because I’m also a sports car enthusiast. To me the challenge is high for drivers to pass on shorter straights and around curves which, indeed, do turn both directions. There is more turning, quick acceleration, and intense braking at Watkins Glenn….those brakes will be smoking before the end of the race...and every time those engine rev limit they risk coming apart. Watkins Glenn is a vehicle punisher. In many ways I see racing as a laboratory to identify how to make a vehicle more durable from being able to withstand greater and greater intensity of effort. This Sunday, 1 pm...should be another great show.

Musings On FaithWith Tom Woodard
Find past and current Musings on Faith articles online at www.downyonderantiques.com
Dr. Charles Stanley’s sermon this past Sunday was taken from Daniel, Chapters 1 and 2. The political world faced by Daniel and his compatri-ots was one in which people were being led to worship governments and heads of governments rather than God. I encourage you to read Daniel yourself. In this case the people of God were under attack. The second point of Dr. Stanley’s message, however, is the critical one, and that is ‘What are our convictions’, especially in the face of attacks upon and oppression of Christians. Taking the issue beyond ‘beliefs’ to ‘convictions’ is a real test of our faith. We easily say “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God” and so on. But what are our convictions? Webster’sOnlineDictionarydefines‘belief ’as‘astateorhabitof mindinwhichtrustorconfidenceisplacedinsomepersonorthing’,but‘belief mayor may not imply certitude in the believer’. Conviction, on the other hand, is definedas‘astrongpersuasionorbelief;thestateof beingconvinced’,or,‘freefrom doubt’, or, ‘ ‘a belief strongly held’. A very apt synonym of ‘conviction’ is ‘certitude’, which is ‘a faith in something not needing or not capable of proof ’. Is not this last the very picture of our Christian faith? Is not the ‘truth’ of God greater, and more certain, than the ‘truths’ of the world? So the ques-tion is ‘What are our convictions as Christians?’ And the underlying message is that if we do not have a conviction about our faith, and convictions about the tenets of that faith, how shall we stand against the forces of the world? And if we do not have that strong and certain belief that amounts to conviction, how can we ingrain in our children the certain faith and certain hope that is ours in Jesus Christ? These are profound and important thoughts, coming from one of the great Bible scholars and Christian leaders of our age. We need to look deep within ourselves and examine the depth of our convictions, both in relation to our Lord and in relation to government and freedoms. Without convictions, strongly held, many Christians will fall by the wayside. Stand strong, and hold fast to God! Yours in Christ, Tom

It does seem like we are all overly interested in what other people think about us, or how we look to other people. Years ago, I put up a wooden privacy fence. I noticed after I had erected it, that I had put the pretty side facing the road. Now, I get to sit in my own backyard and look at the rough side. Why did I do that? Because that’s the way everybody else put theirs up. But why did they put theirs up that way? Because we want to look good for the neighbors passing by. Have you ever thought about how uncomfortable we are willing to make our-selves just so we can leave a certain impression? Some people are willing to walk around all day in a pair of shoes that are too little because they match the pants or dress they are wearing. Some people go through all sorts of pain in order to seem perfect on the outside. Again, it’s all about what others think about us. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be our best and portray our best, but we all must remember that one day the only one that we will give an account of ourselves to, is God. Comparisons and impressions will have no effect on God. While others might talk about all of our contributions on this side of the tomb, God will be on the other side – in the backyard – looking at the side no one else sees.

World Watchwith Mike Woodard
Solutions to tough problems are, by nature, very tough. A lawyer once told me that he knew a judge had ruled about right, at least most of the time, if both parties left the court room ticked off about having lost. Makes for some hated, but just, judges. I urge everyone to remember this rule as the issues that face the nation are addressed by the powers that be. The odds are...you’ll be upset with the solutions...and should be for them to be right. The alternative is to not do anything. That’s not a very smart alternative. The old adage, “I like the way I’m doing it better than the way you’re not” comes to mind. When I see action being taken I always have a little bit of compassion for the folks doing it (except when they stick their hands in my pocket). When it comes to government, they’ll forever be sticking their hands in all of our pockets. So, you have to compare what was already done with what will. The sad truth is...we’re now in a big, powerful government era in this country...AND, in the world. The world economy, which apparently American’s just love to death considering how many goods we buy from foreign nations and from companies owned in and by foreign nations...that world economy, in each of the major players nations, is run by governments in some shape, form or fashion. Pundits call them socialist nations...but they are economic engines running straight at us. A lot of people are complaining about Obama taking over industries or financial institutions…but our competitor nations are WAY ahead of us on this...they are using the power of their industries, with the help of their powerful governments, to run over our industries (see General Motors, RCA TVs, every shoe company that used to exist in America). We either fight that fight, or change our opinion on buying foreign made goods…or sooner or later the USA won’t even be a competitor. Obama isn’t the first to look to increasing the size of government….practically every administration of your lifetime, unless you were born prior to 1929, has involved a larger government at the end of the term than at the beginning. Sometimes it looks differently because typically the benefactors in republican administrations are big corporations, and the benefactors in democratic administrations are po’ folk. But the emphasis on bigger government has growing for all your life. Like it or not, if we tried to become the only nation on earth with the true power in the hands of the people, other nations of the world, wielding the power of their government backed businesses and financials would just kick our ass all over the planet economically. So get real. A lot of people are nostalgic about those good ole days, when a businessman had to complete on his own and things were “fair” (I’m not so sure that actually ever existed except in glowing memories), but today the world done up and changed...we won’t survive except in the mouths of pundits if we really tried to go there, if back there ever was.
