Just click this link in the top right hand corner! - Mike Woodard I’m looking forward to the Bama - Miss State game...but first. I gotta tell you. We had a large time in Baton Rouge beating LSU! You know they really do have this huge Tiger, named Mike (they know me so well) that they parade him around the stadium before the game. There was the largest student section in the SEC there. Loud...man oh man were they loud. LSU has the same number of party tents before a game that Bama has on the quad. Everywhere people are cooking out, wearing their colors, talkin’ football. COX television was there in a big way. You see they have the exclusive on TV rights for all LSU home games. If the announcers sounded prejudice in the game for LSU...now you know why! Their fans will boo their quar- terback! Lee just hasn’t performed this season and they are upset with him. They want someone, anyone, else to be their quarterback next year. And they Booed Nick Saban too! There were burned effigies of Saban, their were shirts with words on them about Nick Saban that I can’t re- peat here. They dooonnn’t liikkee Nick Saaaban, one bit down at LSU. However. Sitting in the stands with LSU fans all around me...I found out they could be nice. I’d been warned a good bit to watch out...but we all had a good time. In my part of the stands they were some nice folks. Hey, they wanted their team to win...but when it was all over...a lot of the fans around me shook my hand and said, “Hope ya’ll beat Florida and win the champi- onship”. Several of them told me they love coming to Tuscaloosa and have a great time up here for the games. Now….I predicted a 7 point dif- ference in the LSU game...it was six. I also predicted “A tough one”. And if that wasn’t tough...I don’t know what is. LSU fans told me their team played their best effort of the season. They be- lieve that if they can play that good that they’ll win out the rest of the season. They believe with effort that good they'll beat Ole Miss...and that’s a tall order. If you don’t believe it ask Flor- ida, or review the Bama Ole Miss game films. Alabama and LSU got beat up in the game. Especially the linemen. There was some heavy hitting going on let me tell you. No one got seriously in- jured. But I bet there wasn’t a linemen on the LSU or Bama team that didn’t wake up sore Sunday morning. Now what’s that got to do with beating Miss State? Bama will have a hard time get- ting “pumped up” for this game against the Dogs. We’re supposed to beat the Dogs. We’ve a much better team. But it’s hard to get a team fired up every week. It’s hard to get back up after you’ve laid it all out on the field like Bama, and LSU, did this past weekend. The difference this week is Saban. Coaches get teams ready for games like this too. He got them ready for LSU...now it’s a different challenge to get them up for this sort of game. An after the battle skirmish game. Mississippi State is big. Bama can’t sit this one out. I figured State would be far ahead of where it is this year. But, never forget oh Tide faithful. This is the SEC. Even Vandy puts up a good fight these days. Bama should win this one...even beat up from last week. Then they’ll have a week off to prepare for Au- burn...even more important to get their breath before the Auburn and then SEC Championship game. Oh, did I mention our Number One ranked, 10-0, Crim- son Pride...er, Tide, will play Florida for the SEC Championship? I guess that’s worth mentioning! First things first. Let’s let the dogs out. Bama 30 - Dogs 14 -Mike Woodard There is no living vet- eran who endured more war time suffering than Tusca- loosa’s Bert Bank. Bank came back to Tuscaloosa after World War II to become a success in the radio business. But, he is one of those rare veteran’s who survived the Bataan Death March in the Philippine Island’s. The Bataan Death March is one of the most hideous events of that great world war. Bank, who is now 94 years old, was a young man back in 1942. He was a soldier ready to fight the Japanese enemy to the death. But, after General Douglas McArthur had to aban- don the Phil- ippine’s the soldier’s captured there had to walk sixty miles without food or water, many being shot along the way, to a prison encampment where many more of them would die. Of the 72,000 soldiers only 54,000 made it to Bataan. That 18,000 men died around him makes Bank’s story of survival one which is re- spected by all who meet him. Bank was present for a celebration of veterans at Indian Hill’s Country Club on Veteran’s Day this week. My father, Tommy Woodard, knew Bert Bank well. Dad served as a captain in the Army in World War II in the Pacific theatre, ending up in Japan at the end. This week we cele- brated our heroic veteran’s in Tuscaloosa. You and I enjoy freedom, everyday, due to the sacrifice and courage these men gave to their country. Many of these men don’t talk about their experi- ences much. Some wish to forget them...for some saw things no one should ever see, and did things no one would ever wish to do. Bert Bank is an American hero. View Our Listing Of One Million Ads! EDITOR’S COMMENTS…

Tuscaloosa’s

7-Day Forecast

NOV. 14—

NOV. 20

This Week’s Local Forecast Weather Trivia

There’s a nip in the air. There’s frost on the pump-kin. There’s reds and bright oranges in the trees. And there’s a big red A in the sky. Alabama is on the way to the SEC championship game….Mississippi State and Auburn aside, beating LSU felt good. There is all this “bad news” you hear, employment, sales, and all...but we have our Crimson Tide to butter our bread, to shine a big light on us. It just feels good to know that right here in our little town, the best of the best can make a national splash. Roll Tide! And, Thanksgiving is just around the corner. The days are getting shorter, and the turkey’s writing his will. The hunters are ready for shooting deer, looking for the cold to come. The times they are a changing’. The years have a way of winding down. A few more friends lost to age and health. But, there is always hope deep within. All we have to do is ask it to arise. If you worry you waste. I just work. I work like never before. Work carries the troubles that might have engaged my mind and puts them away. I work because I like it. Sometimes I work for money, but most times I work because I like to see the job done, and finished, and done well. Kinda like that ole Crimson Tide team. They work, and work well. Some people think they aren’t a success if they don’t make a lot of money. Money can’t buy but so much anyway. It’s a yard stick, OK. But if it’ll buy happi-ness I’ll eat you hat. Money, my dear ole Dad used to say, “Only thing a lot of money is good for is getting you through hard times”. Those Bama players, they don’t make money. They earn heart. Champions are champions because that what they want to be. I hear a lot about how doctor’s make money be-cause of what they know, they heal because of what they know...and they earn a lot of money because they are so valuable. I can tell you. Doctor’s are only good if they care about healing people...not the money, the healing. A banker isn’t worth much if he doesn’t care about his community. We have so many “local banks” of na-tional chains. Mike Woodard, Publisher Tuscaloosa Sun

Cooking With Candy 3309 66th Avenue

Northport, AL 35473

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Heat oil in large skillet. Cook onion, stirring occasionally, until tender. Remove from heat. Stir in chicken, chiles and seasoning mix. Layer half of tortillas in prepared baking dish. Top with chicken mixture, beans and 1 cup of cheese. Layer with remaining tortillas. Top with salsa and remaining cheese. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until heated through and cheese is melted.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2-1/2 cups cooked shredded chicken breast meat 1 can (7 oz.) diced green chiles 1 package (1.25 oz.) taco seasoning mix (regular) 8 corn tortillas 1 can (15 oz.) kidney beans, drained 2 cups (8 oz.) shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1 jar (16 oz.) salsa

This week’s recipe is one that the whole family will enjoy. I know I’ve been on a bit of a Mexican food kick here lately, but it’s just so good and so easy to make for the whole family. With everybody penny-pinching these days, it’s always better to stay in, save money, and cook!

Potty training time can be very difficult for parents and their tod-dlers alike. While different children will always have different reactions to potty training, your child can experience apprehension, fear, and even an-ger at potty training time. There are many different studies on the subject of potty training. In this article you will learn the facts about potty train-ing—the facts that are backed up by experts and researchers that have stud-ied potty training methods and progress. Here are some of the best-known ways to toilet train your toddler: Do Not Panic: Often, parents can think there is something wrong with their child because he or she is 3 or 4 years old and they aren't potty trained. Children develop differently, and some children may simply be late bloomers. This is most definitely not a reason to believe there is something wrong with your child. The child's gender may even have something to do with it. In fact, researchers have found that girls are easier to toilet train than boys are. There are many reasons that this is true, including the fact that girls comprehend language earlier than boys and may therefore under-stand your teachings more quickly than a boy would. One of the biggest messages that experts try to get parents to understand is that you shouldn't panic. If your child is a late bloomer, it doesn't mean there is something wrong with him or her at all. Use Consistency: One of the most important things a parent can do when toilet training their toddler is to be consistent. This is the fastest way to teach your child how to use the toilet. For example, as soon as your child wakes up in the morning, take them to the bathroom. Offer a small prize for using the potty. One thing that many parents do is to place a clear jar in the bathroom with small treats and cheap toys. The child sees this and knows that if he or she successfully uses the toilet, they will get one. Con-tinue this every morning without fail so that your child becomes accus-tomed to and familiar with the process. So when is Your Child Ready? Although each child develops dif-ferently, experts agree there are a few things to look for that will signal your child is ready to begin toilet training. Since they will not be able to learn how to use the toilet until the muscles of their bladder and bottom are fully developed, you will want to look for the following: * Your child can go several hours without emptying his or her bladder. * Your child goes all night without wetting his or her diaper. * Your child is mature enough to listen and understand what you say, as well as to communicate with you. This way, they can communicate the fact that they need to use the bathroom. * Your child is starting to notice that when he or she eliminates in his or her diaper, it is dirty. They may not like the fact that they are dirty. Any or all of these signs may tell you that your child is ready to begin potty training, and there are a few other things you will want to keep in mind when you are toilet training your toddler. Praise is the best method, and experts agree that a child should never be scolded for acci-dents. This could make them develop a complex about using the potty.| In fact, a study was done in which the researchers asked parents to praise their children and speak of defecation in a positive way to them. This study was published in the Archives of Pediatric Adolescent Medicine. The researchers found that when parents spoke positively about defecation, the child was less likely to want to hide during the process and responded better to toilet training. It can be difficult to potty train your child, but with consistency and praise, you can soon say goodbye to diapers!

The main point of a regular skin care routine is that it will keep the outer layer of the skin evenly lubricated and moisturized and protected from the environment all the time. A good skin care routine when followed faithfully will:| 1. stimulate the circulation. 2. speed-up the sloughing-off process of the dead cells. Both of these will assist in keeping the skin fresh and young-looking. In addition to taking care of your skin: * Fresh air and exercise also stimulated the circulation. * Good diet provides the vitamins and minerals that the body and skin need. * Adequate sleep (You know instinctively what is right for you) rests and regenerates. And, as most now know, research has shown that both alcohol and cigarette smoking are aging. (You only have to look at yourself in the mirror the `morning after` a heavy night out to take this point) Your skin is the largest organ in your body. What you put on it can have a profound impact on your overall health over the long term. Unfortunately, most skincare products available on today's market contain ingredients which actually work against the health of our skin or are actually harmful to your health: 1) Mineral oil: Once applied, prevents the skin from "breathing." Because of this, it clogs pores, interferes with your skin's natural ability to eliminate toxins, and can lead to acne flare ups. Mineral oil may also go by the names liquid paraffin, paraffin wax, and petrolatum on the product label. 2) Dioxane: (a synthetic derivative of coconut). This substance is widely used in skincare products. It often contains high concentrations of 1,4-dioxane, which is readily absorbed through the skin. I know this sounds crazy, but 1,4-dioxane is considered a chemical "known to the State of California to cause cancer". 3) Fragrances: Fragrances: Your skin care products should not contain fragrances. Many fragrances are produced from ingredients which are known to be toxic or carcinogenic. 4) Parabens: methyl, propyl, butyl, and ethyl paraben. Many skin care products (and moisturizing products) will use parabens as a preservative to increase the shelf life of the formula. However, studies suggest these preservatives may cause cancer and interfere with the body's endocrine system, as well as causing allergic reactions and skin rashes. 5) Alcohols: ethanol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and SD alcohol. Not all alcohols have the same properties, but these, which are commonly found in skin care products, are very drying and irritating for the skin. Our Western Culture has been slowly training itself to read food labels, and now it's time for us to learn to read the labels on any product we apply to our skin or hair. One of the reasons Aromatherapy is effective as a therapeutic modality, or that a nicotine patch can curb cigarette craving, is due to the fact that substances can be absorbed through the skin. It only follows that if something therapeutic can affect our health via absorption, harmful ingredients can also pass through that protective barrier. We tend to look to our skin for our outward identity - our 'beauty' - which is fine. At least, it's fine up to the point when we forget that our skin is the first line of defense our body has against illness and aging. When we forget this, we not only forfeit that ever-elusive 'fountain of youth' - but also risk our very well-being.

- LAWNS. Who’s the boss, grass or the moss? Many people fight a losing battle against moss, especially around trees and edges of their lawn. Here’s the rule of thumb. If your grass gets less than four hours per day of direct sunlight, eventually moss will win out. I love the look of moss...but some people don’t like it at all. I think it looks soft and inviting, but others think it looks like a fungus overtaking their grass. You can rake up the moss and reseed grass, but unless the environ-ment is improved for the grass the moss will return. You can cut trees or, more desirably, prune back limbs on trees to increase the amount and dura-tion of sunlight striking the ground. It’s a combination of making conditions worse for moss and better for grass. Some times soil needs to be tested to add fertilizers conducive to grass. If you’re going to convert ground from moss to grass: prune the trees or cut them back to increase sunlight, rake up the moss, seed the ground with grass and have the soil tested to remedy any advantage moss has with that soil. Once the grass grows, don’t close cut it when mowing. Leave your blade up high in areas that once sustained moss.

There was a lot of concern about Obama being elected. All that talk about he’s a Muslim, a terrorist supporter, a social-ist...yada, yada. Watch as all that bull disappears as the government goes about address monumental challenges we face today. The partisan bickering should be, must be, dead and over now. When the nation faces great perils, it’s time to pull together. The years of having the luxury of fighting each other within this na-tion had better be over, or else. That’s not a threat...that’ll become a real and present danger if folks don’t get their head on straight for a while. Someday, far into the future hopefully, we’ll be able to afford to yell and scream at each other. There’s at time for internal disagreements, and even in the pitched battle of war generals disagree...but they also must agree to come together once the decisions are made and fight the battle to-gether. The American people, well most of them anyway, are sick and tired of the people we elect blocking each other from taking ac-tion, taking stupid actions, or concerning themselves with re-election. The past few years have convinced me that term limits should be set for congress...somewhere around three terms and out. If all they do is try to position themselves to stay in office for 40 years they aren’t looking out for the best interest of the country. And everyone, with a brain, knows they haven’t been looking our for the best interest of the country. The days of able bodied people getting checks from the gov-ernment without working...they need to be over. Can I get a democ-rat to say Amen? The days of rich corporate greedy getting billion dollar bailouts...they need to be over. Can I get a republican to say Amen? Throwing money around from the government, borrowed money, that has brought about this disaster in confidence. Tell the truth...do you have any confidence in your federal government? Very little. Why? Because they don’t work together and they don’t act in the best interest of the United States of America. It’s time for that foolishness to end. Party bickering my…. Bail outs my…. This next administration better get it right...and they all better be involved and get onboard. Or this could be our last ride.

During the early archery season I arrowed a nice doe. I calculated that I was in my tree stand about seven minutes. Before I went to search for my deer I gathered my equip-ment, loaded it on my four-wheeler, and took it to my truck. By the time I was back to my tree stand, about forty minutes had passed. I knew I had made a good clean shot and there shouldn’t be any trouble finding my deer. I had tried to mark where I took the shot, but by the time I was back on the trail I was confused. I looked for my arrow and any sign of blood, but could not find either. I decided to climb back up into the tree stand to look again at where the doe had stood. I recalculated and shortly thereafter found my arrow and a few minutes later, the deer. Later, I thought about how difficult I had made a simple procedure simply by forgetting where I had made my shot. I was reminded of a spiritual truth I had learned a few months earlier. All through the Old Testament, when man had an encounter with God, God com-manded him to build an altar. Abraham was the first that is recorded. God had told him that he would have a son. This was a real stretch for Abraham to believe since he was about seventy-five years old at that time and his wife was barren. God told him to build an altar. Jacob was another. He physically wrestled with the angel of the Lord one day. Jacob was given a lasting limp, but his encounter was followed with him building an altar. We have the significance of this in another example. The Children of Israel were crossing through the river Jordan. They were now in the land that was promised to them. God told them to take twelve stones, one for every tribe, and stack them up, so that when their children pass by, they could tell them how God had delivered them. These stones would be a remembrance of their encounters with God. Many times God has encounters with us. There may have been a time that He called you into a certain ministry, or He may have spoken to your heart about a particular matter so clearly, that it was undeniably Him. Since then, time has passed. You have not forgotten about that moment, but it seems distant and it has caused you to doubt. But what if you had built an altar at the time and place that God had spoken to you? You would be able to go back and remember exactly what transpired there. And your faith would be renewed. It’s not too late. Maybe you need to take a trip back in time, to that place that you had your encounter with God. While you’re there build an altar. An altar is anything that will cause you to remember what happened. One time, I scratched an “A” in a tree, so that each time I passed by that tree I would be reminded of that moment with God. When I see that tree, doubt and discouragement leave and faith is restored. It’s just like getting back up in that tree stand and seeing it all over again, like I did when it first happened. It made the path clear, once again.
