What’s going to happen post-Brexit in a world of emboldened eurosceptics? The European Union has grand ambitions for the future, while simultaneously squaring up to huge challenges: populism, nationalism, migration and the widening gap between rich and poor. Solutions to these problems differ according to whether you’re young or old, Danish or Spanish, but also socialist or conservative. Europeans get to decide the future course of the EU from 23 to 26 May. This is when the citizens of the European Union will be electing representatives to the new European Parliament. Will they continue to throw their weight behind democ- racy, human rights and a peaceful coexistence? Will the values of the EU flourish or be abandoned? In live broadcasts, talk shows, documentaries and magazine programs, DW provides full coverage of the 2019 European elections. Shortly before the vote, Arts.21 (starting 18 May) takes a road trip through the EU – from Italy to Ireland via Hungary, Germany and France. The culture magazine visits writers, musicians, theater professionals and filmmakers and poses the question: What difficulties face the home nations of these artists? How do they experience Europe? Made in Germany (starting 22 May) is also on the road meeting jobless youngsters in the Balkans, young refugees in southern Europe and startup founders in Berlin who believe in more than just European funding programs. What do these young people think of Europe? For election results, tune in to special editions of DW News from Sunday 26 May. Two states were founded within months of each other. The partition of Germany into East and West mirrored the division of the world along Cold War lines. It was a conflict that would endure for more than 40 years. Looking back, what happened appears to follow a certain logic. But as we’re now aware, although the division of Germany may have taken a long time, it wasn’t irreversible. And it also seems almost inevitable that the values enshrined in the 1949 constitution have prevailed as the bedrock of society – including that of reunified Germany. Germans in the year 1949 could not have had any inkling of this. In both the West and the East, they lived through an unprecedented historic experiment. But what if the foundation of the two nations was a fundamental mistake? Imagine if Germany hadn’t been able to overcome the curse of fascism? The documentary 1949 – One Year, Two Germanies doesn’t just reconstruct the key events leading to the foundation of the two nations in the year 1949, it also imparts a very real sense of what life was like for ordinary people at the time. Seeking Sanctuary They’re on the run – from violent conflicts, persecution and hunger. The UN says there were around 69 million refugees and displaced people around the world in mid-2018. At least three million of them apply for asylum in industrialized nations. And then? Many countries seal themselves off, stoke their citizens’ fears or refuse all involvement – for example the wealthy nation Japan. The country accepted just 20 refugees in 2017, leaving thousands of failed asylum seekers in limbo in camps. Desperately seeking sanc-tuary – Global 3000 reports on restric-tions, fears and blind spots associated with the subject of human flight.

Clean Air Air pollution continues to pose a health threat – in large cities first and foremost. In Germany, a bitter debate is raging over the introduction of a ban on diesel-powered vehicles. But emissions can’t be solely blamed on transport and industry. Fireplaces, industrial farming and the weather are also contributing factors. The documentary Clean Air – A Human Right explains the importance of pollut-ant-reducing measures.

Europeans Tie the Knot Spring is a season for lovers. May is an especially romantic time, which explains why it’s so often referred to as the merry month. In Europe, you’re much more likely to hear wedding bells in May. But countries have very different ideas about how to celebrate the best day in a person’s life. In the new series “Europeans Tie the Knot,” Euromaxx crashes a wide variety of weddings – in Finland, Ireland, Bulgaria, Italy and Greece. The magazine observes nervous couples as they prepare for the big day, features last-minute malfunctions and presents a whole host of goose-bump moments. “Europeans Tie the Knot” – starts May 2019 on Euromaxx.

The Loneliness Epidemic In spite of Facebook, WhatsApp and a market flooded with dating apps, loneliness is more prevalent these days than previously thought – affecting young people in particular. Our fast-paced world means human connections tend to be more fleeting; social contacts are often neglected as we get out of the habit of spending quality time with others. New research is showing that loneliness can make us ill. Worse still: loneliness may be a risk factor for premature death similar to that presented by smoking, high blood pressure, alcoholism and obesity. Socially isolated people often suffer from stress. Many demon-strate heightened levels of cortisol, which weaken the immune system and causes a variety of complaints. How can those affected escape their isolation and find ways to connect with others again? In Good Shape presenter Dr. Carsten Lekutat investigates.
