AMERICAN AUGERS RIG TACKLES TRITON KNOLL HDD PROJECTS

T he installation of the electrical system on the Triton Knoll power project in the UK

will present one of the biggest engineering challenges of its kind, with almost 60 km of onshore underground cable to be installed and over 300 obstacles to be crossed by individual horizontal direction drill bores, which is three times more than what is believed to be the previous UK record for an infrastructure project.

Ditch Witch UK supplies horizontal directional drills to all three sub-contractors entrusted to timeously install the utilities on this project, one of them being Johnston Trenchless Solutions (JTS), which is a division of the Joseph Gallagher group, and contracts nationwide on jobs such as specialist microtunnelling and directional drilling contracts using some of the latest and most cutting-edge equipment on the market.

The latest addition to the Johnston Trenchless Solutions fleet is its newly acquired American Augers DD-110, supplied by Ditch Witch UK. This rig was selected for its capability to tackle some of the larger drilling tasks on this project. The American Augers brand has recently been brought into the Ditch Witch/Charles Machine Works stable, and this machine utilises a 164 kW Cummins QS5B6.7 engine to deliver a massive 50 tonnes of thrust and pullback force along with 20,337 NM of rotational torque.

The immense capabilities of this machine are currently being utilised by Johnston Trenchless Solutions to complete shots that are 500 m in length, in order to pull in the various sizes of pipes that will eventually host the electric supply cables coming from the off-shore wind farm.

The scope of works for this projects onshore HDD requirements is set to keep the crews busy for the whole of 2019 and Johnston Trenchless Solutions will be drawing on its vast industry experience and seasoned, knowledgeable crews and operators to deliver a high standard of service and safety to the Triton Knoll project. ALWAYS MOVING FORWARD IN PIPELINE TECHNOLOGY

A dense pipeline network spanning over 3 million kilometers is the global backbone of industry and

commerce. To keep supply stable, innovative pipeline companies are constantly expanding the network and making it denser even in sparsely populated places. In the pipeline business too, Herrenknecht claims to be a dependable partner supporting its contractors throughout the duration of every project. Ground-breaking pipeline tools close technology gaps and offer individual solutions for any project challenge.

Every year, around 380 km of new pipelines are installed worldwide using Herrenknecht technology. Thanks to innovative technology developments such as Direct Pipe®, pipelines can be installed quickly and securely even in difficult topologies. Crossing under a hurricane protection levee in Texas, Direct Pipe® met even the stringent safety requirements of the US Army Corps of Engineers. The method combines the advantages of microtunnelling and HDD technology. In a single step, a prefabricated pipeline can be installed trenchless and the required borehole excavated at the same time.

In Auckland, for example, Direct Pipe® proved itself in the modernisation of a wastewater treatment plant. Here the Herrenknecht Utility machine set a new distance record as it bored its 1,930 m long way through the New Zealand subsoil into the sea. By using the innovative technology, harmful environmental effects on the underwater flora were minimised. The company also offers HDD expertise for pipeline installations like this from the mainland to the seabed (shore approach). In Anglesea, Australia, the Dunstans Construction Group replaced the sea outfall pipe of a water treatment plant cut off by a collapsing cliff using a Herrenknecht HK250C rig within a few months.

HDD rigs from Herrenknecht are part of contractors’ standard repertoire for river crossings too. South Paris, as part of a canal extension, the 10 m deep Canal latéral à l’Oise running parallel to the river Oise was widened and deepened to accommodate large vessels. The existing gas pipeline had to be lowered by eight meters and replaced. After only a week, the approximately 250 m long and

18 m deep river crossing was successfully completed. A special feature of this project: the HK80CK rig used is hybrid and powered by both a diesel engine and an electric motor. Once the rig is in position, only the electric motor runs during the drilling process, resulting in lower exhaust emissions. In urban areas in particular, the compact rig stands out with its space-saving design, while its low noise levels can increase acceptance of construction work among the population.

Mechanised excavation technology is also used for the extraction of resources. With entry angles between a shallow 8o and a vertical 90o, coal seam gases and oil sands at depths of up to 2,000 m can be tapped using Slant Directional Drilling (SDD). In Zevenbergen in the Netherlands, renewable geothermal energy accessed by Herrenknecht deep drilling rigs is used to heat multiple greenhouses. The principle is simple: a well raises the warm water from a depth of 1,535 m. Then, after the heat has been extracted, the cold water is pumped down a second well back into the reservoir.

To drive advances in the pipeline market, Herrenknecht is constantly working to improve existing pipeline technologies. In close cooperation with HDD specialists, for example, innovative tools have been developed that greatly simplify the previously multi-stage reaming process. The Full Face Hole Opener (FFHO) is a milestone in HDD pipeline installation as it enables the efficient reaming of pilot holes in a single step. The Downhole Jetpump (DHJP) removes the drill cuttings in the drill string itself and not through the borehole. This means HDD boreholes are cleaned much more effectively and safely than before. The tools can be used individually or in combination to help to get the best results from any project.

With around 80 domestic and and overseas subsidiaries and associated companies working in related fields, Herrenknecht provides comprehensive fast and targeted services close to each project and contractor. In late 2018, a new HDD service hub opened in Houston, Texas, USA right in the heart of the American pipeline business. The U.S. state is the world’s sixth largest oil producer. With its location, the company is now even closer to the centre of the U.S. oil industry. Website: www.herrenknecht.com

We share similar people values, performance expectations, business models focused on innovation, brand and channel, and strong community ties. With its rich multigenerational family legacy, commitment to its employees and market leadership position, we have respected and admired Charles Machine Works for a long time. We were excited when joining forces became a possibility, and we know that both companies will be stronger together.

“Our success is the result of years of hard work and an unwavering commitment to developing innovative solutions for customers.” said Rick Johnson, Charles Machine Works chief executive

HANDS-ON FOR AUGER ENGINEERS

S pecialist for the UK insurance industry Auger has come up with

the answer to delivering practical training for its engineers, at its own headquarters.

By using land around its own offices, the leader in drainage and water mains claims for the UK can put new and existing engineering staff through their paces in every practical way through the extension of its academy.

With a focus on working safely and encouraging engineering excellence, the training ground adjacent to Auger’s head office at Wallasey, Wirral, UK provides training managers Iain Jones and Dave Rogers with the space to develop the workforce.

Detecting services, undertaking safe excavations, moling new water mains and operating the latest CCTV drainage cameras are amongst the many skills and competencies they are developing.

Iain said: “There is nothing like getting your hands on this equipment and trying it for yourself. This allows us to conduct the technical training in the office and the practical training outside in a controlled environment on our own site and means we can develop staff to the level required before they go out on the road. We want our engineers to deliver the best for our customers and this means they receive dedicated training the Auger way. They are fully-trained through the academy to best practice methods and processes. The industry has been crying out for this level of training for years.”

Auger, which has expanded its national team to more than 75 engineers, puts its entry-level staff through training including drainage investigation, on-site safety, leak detection and repairs to drainage systems and water mains. Engineers have the opportunity to progress to a variety of roles as they develop their skillset.

Auger provides an unrivalled direct labour model for insurers in drainage and water mains claims with its UK-wide network of directly employed engineers.

Training under the Academy includes partnering engineers with senior staff, supported by industry-leading software and mobile apps which allow staff to file information and reports quickly and easily from wherever they are in the UK.

The Auger Academy also provides learning for school leavers and graduates joining Auger who may be working in other fields at the company’s headquarters including surveying, accounting and IT. Website: www.auger.co.uk

A report on laying the optical fibre communication cable network was presented by Bescom officials to Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) chairman MK Shankarlinge Gowda during a recent public hearing. Tenders for the work were due to be issued a week from this meeting, with work being awarded in three months.

In a bid to improve the reliability and quality of power supply by reducing interruptions, the Government’s energy department had directed Bescom to submit a detailed project report (DPR) for work pertaining to conversion of high tension/low tension (HT/LT) overhead power lines into underground (UG)/aerial bunched (AB) cables under the 2018-19 budget.

The project, expected to cost Rs 4,500 crore (US$ 676 million, £525 million or €598 million), will be executed in a phased manner over the next three years. The DPR of the optical fibre network project is still in an ‘approval’ stage, said Bescom officials.

“Along with the underground cabling, Bescom has decided to lay optical fibre communication cables as well. This will create a robust communication system which is essential for the utility as it aspires to move towards a smart grid system.” said Bescom managing director C Shikha.

“With this, Bescom will become the first government-owned electricity distribution company to have a self-owned, in-house communication system. We can get meter data through Radio Frequency (KF) technology or remotely through smart meters. The remaining strands of optical fibres can be leased out to other departments like traffic police, BWSSB or private players, generating extra revenue for Bescom.” she said.

“The cost incurred will be minimal but the benefits aplenty. The cost will only be 5% in addition to the cost of UG-cabling project. A trenchless horizontal directional drilling (HDD) method will be used in the optical fibre project, ensuring minimum inconvenience to the public.” she added. Website: https://bescom.org/

EXTENDING MICROTUNNELLING TECHNOLOGY LIMITS

M ichels Corporation’s microtunnelling team extended the limits of

technology by successfully completing a 470 ft (143 m) long tunnel with a tight, U-shaped vertical curve under the Tualatin River in Tualatin, Oregon, USA.

Michels used its new Herrenknect AVN 1800 Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) and special 84 in (2,134 mm) o.d. reinforced concrete pipe to complete the tight 650 ft (198 m) radius curve.

The Tualatin Interceptor and Siphon Improvements King City Siphon will replace the original wastewater interceptor which was constructed in 1974 and has reached it’s the end of its useful life. The new siphon, a non-gravity fed utility, was fitted with seismically resilient pipe that is better suited for the corrosive environment within the pipeline. The special pipe was designed in and shipped from Malaysia for this project.

The tunnel was bored in less than a month, but comprehensive planning took substantially longer. Michels worked on the design-build project with project owner Clean Water Services, general contractor Mortenson, and lead engineer Kennedy Jenks for more than a year to design and complete it. That process included a comprehensive review of Michels’ many trenchless construction options to determine which one had the best potential for success. Ultimately microtunnelling was determined to be the best fit.

The Tualatin project required the boundary-pushing design to allow the siphon system to meet the required functionality with a minimal construction footprint. Typically a microtunnelling project would be launched and received from watertight, secant pile shafts up to 60 ft (18 m) deep to allow for a straight alignment or minor horizontal and vertical curves. However, this project used 20 ft (6 m) deep sheet piling shafts, resulting in significant cost savings.

Michels took on the challenging task by proposing the vertical U-shaped curve alignment, even though a similar project with such a large curve or tight radius had not been previously executed in North America. Michels engaged many industry leaders to complete the project. Jackcontrol AG helped in designing and supplying the RCP jacking pipe and hydraulic joints. Aldea Services assisted in technical design of the tunnel and provided oversight. Herrenknecht consulted on the MTBM capabilities and purchase of a new AVN 1800. A VMT gyro steering control system was configured on the MTBM to ensure tight line and grade tolerances were met. In addition, Michels included Derrick equipment and a big bowl centrifuge in its custom-built separation plant. Line and grade are critical to the success of the siphon project as challenging as this one. After the team was assembled and many design meetings were held, some unique challenges emerged. These included:

The slope of the floor at approximately 30o and crew functionality working at such a steep slope.

The front wall, floor and thrust block design, which also had an equivalent 30o slope. The thrust force of the reaction block that could potentially push the non-stable soils

and react above ground. Crossing a U.S Army Corps of Engineers waterway (the Tualatin River).

When river crossings are encountered, issues that could be generated from tunnelling include inadvertent flows of the drilling fluids, settlement of the river, and heave. During the investigation of the soils, it was determined that the upper region of the tunnel would be in the Missoula Flood Deposit formation (a sandy clay) with blow counts ranging from as low as 4 to 12, and then entering into the Hillsboro formation (clayey sand) with blow counts ranging from 9 to 44. Since steering concerns were very critical, several different soil treatment designs were evaluated during the process to steer the machine on line and grade.

The original concept design included a 750 ft (229 m) radius vertical curve and soil cemented columns. After

Microtunnelling under the Tualatin River required a 30o sloping launch set up.

A view along the curving drive under the Tualatin River.

Page 15: TW ORKS SOCIETY FOR TRENCHLESS TECHNOLOGY FOR THE …nodigmedia.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Feb-19.pdf · 2019-02-28 · a water treatment plant cut off by a collapsing cliff

several iterations, it was determined to tighten the curve radius to 650 ft (198 m) and shorten the drive to 470 linear feet (143 m) to put more of the tunnel alignment into the Hillsboro formation, which had a better potential for steering reaction. However, by tightening the curve radius, additional risk was associated with joint deflection and jacking forces, however both proved to be non-issues with the appropriate design. The tighter curve alleviated the need for the intrusive soil-cemented columns through wetlands, and only needed for the front entry wall. The columns added at the front entry allowed for the MTBM to provide a stable steering reaction right from the launch of the tunnel and increased the chances for success.

Once all the risks were reviewed, it was time for Michels tunnelling crews to shine. The project created multiple logistical challenges, which also included the complication of shipping the international RCP pipe and MTBM. International shipping can create multiple complications. However, with knowledgeable management and field staff, these potential problems did not arise and all shipping was handled on-time. The commencement of the new separation plant and MTBM also can raise multiple potential issues. With the help of local suppliers and other contractors in the area, Michels was able to work through the minor issues and prepare for launch.

While preparing to launch the MTBM, Michels talented team developed a strategy to rig the MTBM and set the head as well as each subsequent section of RCP pipe down at a 30o slope. After the MTBM was launched, the Michels crew shifted emphasis to steering the tunnel. Placing the bottom curvature of the tunnel into the Hillsboro formation proved to be successful, and the line and grade were perfectly executed. The MTBM was launched and finished in less than a month, and celebrated as a success to the entire team.

Design-build project can always provide unique challenges, however, the professional team achieved astounding success. This unique project provides the utility industry with an alternate to conventional microtunnelling methods and provides new potential for what the industry can achieve. The shallow shafts allow for a smaller dewatering footprint and the precise steering demonstrates of microtunnelling can be a viable, successful option for construction on line and grade under waterways, highways, railroads, and any other potential obstruction.

While the equipment used on this project is not new technology, it was used in new ways. Current potential cost savings could also prove to be useful as the shafts no longer need to be constructed at such great depths. In addition, using the U-shaped vertical curve to construct siphons can help push the limits of the industry higher. Website: www.michels.us

ROBBINS CROSSOVER TBM COMPLETES TURKEY’S LONGEST WATER TUNNEL

E xcavation of Turkey’s longest water tunnel came to an end on 18 December, 2018. To get there, a 5.56 m (18.2 ft) diameter Robbins Crossover (XRE) TBM and the contractor JV of Kolin/

Limak had to overcome dozens of major fault zones and water pressures up to 26 bar. The completed national priority water line is set to go into operation in March 2019.

The 31.6 km (19.6 mile) long Gerede Water Transmission Tunnel is an urgently needed project due to severe and chronic droughts in the capital city Ankara. Its final leg, a 9.0 km (5.6 mile) section of extremely difficult ground including sandstone agglomerate, limestone and tuff, was just one section in the middle of a tunnel widely considered to be the most challenging ever driven by TBMs in Turkey. “I have had the chance to study and visit the majority of mechanised tunnelling projects in Turkey since the 1980s. The Gerede project is one of the most challenging projects amongst them.” said Dr. Nuh Bilgin, Professor of Mine and Tunnel Mechanisation at Istanbul Technical University and Chairman of the Turkish Tunnelling Society.

The Robbins XRE TBM was called in to complete the tunnel, which was at a standstill after using three Double Shield TBMs from another manufacturer. Those machines encountered incredibly difficult geology including massive inrushes of mud and water. The Kolin/Limak JV had to develop a new strategy given the unexpected ground conditions. They contacted The Robbins Company, which suggested a Crossover (Dual-Mode Type) TBM for the remaining section of tunnel. “The Crossover TBM provided great ease and versatility during the entire project with frequently changing ground conditions. The TBM was equipped with features such as increased thrust, two-speed gearbox, and modular screw conveyor. It was capable of giving the necessary responses in different geologies, which was our most important asset in achieving our goal.” said Barış Duman, Project Manager for the Kolin – Limak JV.

“The challenging part for us was to design and manufacture a TBM that could complete the difficult section of the Gerede Tunnel where two other competitor TBMs had failed.” said Yunus

Alpagut, Robbins representative in Turkey. The specialised machine was designed to statically hold water pressure up to 20 bar, a failsafe that none of the standard Double Shield TBMs had been equipped with. A convertible cutterhead was also provided that was designed for ease of conversion between hard rock and EPB modes, and with cutter housings that could be fitted with either disc cutters or tungsten carbide tooling. To cope with difficult ground, the Gerede machine was also equipped with the Torque-Shift System, multi-speed gearing allowing the machine to function as either an EPB or a hard rock TBM. This function is done by adding another gear reduction, heavy duty pinions and bull gears accommodate high torque at low speed, allowing the machine to bore through fault zones and soft ground without becoming stuck.

The Crossover machine was assembled in spring 2016 after crews excavated a bypass tunnel to one side of one of the stuck Double Shield TBMs. An underground assembly chamber allowed the machine to be built in the tunnel using Onsite First Time Assembly (OFTA). “The logistics of getting components through the existing tunnel were the most challenging thing. The assembly chamber was 7 km (4 mile) from the portal. The water inflow of 600 l/s (159 gal/s) made it difficult to get the materials to the machine.” said Glen Maynard, Robbins Field Service Site Manager.

Despite the challenges, the machine began boring in summer 2016 and within the first 50 m (160 ft) of boring had successfully passed through the section that buried the original Double Shield TBM. The machine was required to be used in EPB mode as it encountered water pressures up to 26 bars, alluvium, flowing materials, clay and a total of 48 fault zones. Water pressure was lowered by draining the ground water through the rear shield probe drill ports, which were equipped with normally-closed ball valves. Probe drilling was done on a routine basis to get through the ground conditions. “Together with the difficult geological conditions the travel time to reach the TBM within the tunnel had effects on TBM performance. Despite this constraint, the tunnel excavation achieved a best day of 29.4 m (96½ ft), best week of 134.6 m (441.6 ft) and a best month of 484 m (1,588 ft).” said Duman.

“We had many challenging areas with water and high pressures up to 26 bar along with alluvial material in fault zones. Ground pressure on the shield body caused squeezing conditions in clay. In these regions, we were able to quickly pass through by keeping the TBM advance rate, cutterhead rpm and screw conveyor rotation speed at the ideal level. Ultimately, we think our decision to select a Crossover TBM was correct.” continued Duman. With tunnelling complete, the pipeline is on

track to open in March 2019. The tunnel will convey water from the Gerede River to Çamlıdere Dam, which provides potable water for the Ankara city water system. Website: www.robbinstbm.com

Geology encountered in the Gerede tunnel included a mix of volcanic rock including tuff, basalt, and breccia, as well as sedimentary formations like sandstone, shale, and limestone, all punctuated by fault zones that contained clay and alluvium.

The Crossover TBM launched in summer 2016 and within the first 50 m (160 ft) bypassed the difficult fault zone area where the previous non-Robbins Double-Shield machine got stuck.

HDD ALL-ROUNDER GIVES A VARIETY OF CONVINCING PERFORMANCES

T he GRUNDODRILL 4X compact HDD small drilling rig

has proved its versatility in Great Britain in various construction projects. Each application featured special local circumstances, such as confined space and sometimes difficult to access conditions or the requirement to cause as little damage as possible to existing surfaces. These are precisely the conditions for which trenchless HDD technology is ideal and for which the GRUNDODRILL 4X is predestined owing particularly to its manoeuvrability and low weight.

DRINKING WATER IN A FOREST RESERVE In Langley Wood, in the New Forest nature reserve near the small village of Hamptworth in southern England, a 820 m long water pipe with a diameter of 50 mm was needed to supply the wild cattle with fresh water. Owing to the length of the PE pipes (SDR 17.6), the installation was done in several 50 m sections. In small construction pits, which served as a start pit of one drill section and then as a start pit for the next drill section, the ends of the PE pipes were connected. Drilling through the sandy-loam soil was successfully completed in 10 days on behalf of GM Utilities Limited of Horton, by Tracto-Technik UK Ltd of Bedford. The customer was very pleased with the work as the environmentally sensitive area of the forest reserve was disturbed as little as possible and the cattle can now be supplied with fresh water at any time.

DATA CABLE IN INDUSTRIAL PARK In an industrial park in Loughton, northeast of London, the Sytner Chigwell car dealership (BMW) required a new data cable to connect two office buildings. The installation was done using a PE pipe with a diameter of 100 mm, which functioned as a cable duct. As the 48 m long line ran along or under a busy road within the industrial park in the area of a T-junction, the choice for the installation fell to the trenchless HDD drilling method again using the GRUNDODRILL 4X. A small start pit sufficed for the near-surface drilling route, which in turn was positive given the confined space conditions. A team from Mole Utilities from the Wirral, near Liverpool was able to successfully complete the installation after just two days. The car dealership was very satisfied with the work and delighted that the paving of its premises was hardly touched by using of the GRUNDODRILL 4X rig.

DATA CABLE UNDER A ROAD A data cable was also to be laid in Trelogan, near Liverpool, but this time in open terrain under a road. The customer here was SP Energy Networks, with its head office in Blantyre, Scotland. The HDD drilling operation using the GRUNDODRILL 4X was again completed by a team from Mole Utilities. Over a length of 18 m a PE pipe was installed as a cable conduit with a diameter of 110 mm. The starting point of the bore was a field on one side of the road. The GRUNDODRILL 4X was able to be positioned easily thanks to its light weight and manoeuvrability. After only three hours the cable conduit for the data cable was laid under the road. The team from Mole Utilities was delighted that the bore could be executed so quickly and efficiently.

POWER CABLE FOR SOLAR SYSTEM The assembly of an innovative solar system known as ‘SmartFlower’ on a private property in Leeds required the installation of two power cables. As the property was a garden with a well-kept lawn, an open-trench solution or cut-and-cover method was out of the question. The team undertaking the installation, again from Mole Utilities, had planned the solar system and were also responsible for the installation of the necessary cables. It was therefore decided to once again use the trenchless HDD method and the GRUNDODRILL 4X rig. The small contact area in combination with the low

weight of the drill rig meant only minimal damage to the lawn. In addition to the two power cables, a PE irrigation pipeline with a diameter of 25 mm was laid in two bores of 47 m and 42 m long respectively. In each case after the pilot bore the power cables and the PE line were laid in one step. The owner of the private property was extremely satisfied with the work of Mole Utilities, which was completed in one day using of the GRUNDODRILL 4X, which protected his garden. RENOVATING A HIGH-PRESSURE GAS PIPELINE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

I n 2017, GasNet in the Czech Republic started investigations on a trenchless rehabilitation technology for high-pressure natural gas pipelines. A DN 250 PN 25 steel pipe with a length of

1,581 m in Adamov near Brno in the Czech Republic is located in a forestry area with difficult access. Large parts of the pipeline were laid between a narrow forestry path and a river. Furthermore, a section of about 400 m was built into an inaccessible, steep, wooded area.

The technical department of operator GasNet, a member of Innogy, was informed about the self-supporting Primus Line® system which is certified by the DVGW (German Association for Gas and Water) for the rehabilitation of high-pressure gas pipelines. Three different Primus Line® options were reviewed and GasNet decided to continue with the Primus Line® system DN 150 PN 35. At Primus Line, a qualified quotation was created based on a detailed construction schedule.

In cooperation with GasNet, Primus Line appointed a local Czech construction company for camera inspection, pipe cleaning and pipeline construction. Employees of the construction company as well as some from GasNet were trained and certified for the installation of the Primus Line® system at the manufacturer’s headquarters in Germany.

On preparing the installation of the Primus Line® system in 2018, the Czech construction company created access points to the forest and the pipeline, laid a bypass, cleaned the pipeline and removed incorrectly made welding seams protruding into the inner diameter of the host pipe by using a cutter. Before the installation, a calibration pig was pulled through the host pipe.

The installation of the Primus Line® system, consisting of three sections of Primus Line® DN 150 PN 35 including six Primus Line® DN 150 PN 25 connectors, was accomplished in three weeks. After the successful pressure test with 33 bar and the acceptance by the

RAILWAY PASSENGER SURGE RESULTS IN SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN RAIL LINES

T he Railway Investment Prioritisation Strategy in the UK states that the first priority for 2015-2035 should be to maintain and improve the passenger capacity of the existing 300 km network.

Terra Solutions has played its small part in this by rehabilitating several culverts that run under the railway, along the Coleraine – Londonderry line in Northern Ireland.

THE PROJECT The project was the installation of two 480 mm diameter structural liners under the railway track, as well as carrying out three 900 mm long LSR patch liner installations at Culvert 10.269A for NI Railways (Translink), with all the restrictions normally associated with working near railways.

The works had to be completed to coincide with low tidal levels, as the river which flows into the culverts, had to be stanched and over-pumped. The 480 mm diameter culverts were cleaned and CCTV surveyed in advance. Results meant that it was necessary then to deploy a robotic cutter to remove concrete from within the pipelines. The 900 mm long LSR patches were then installed before the 480 mm diameter culverts were lined. The liner chosen was Reline Europe’s Alphaliner 1800 with integrated pre-liner. Terra’s latest RE2000 UV-lining system was used for installation and curing. The annulus, as a result of dimension irregularity, was grouted utilising a grout pan and pump. NI Railways said that over the next 20 years it will need to complete further track upgrading and Terra hopes to be involved further in this investment. Website: www.terrasolutions.co.uk

AWARDS AND REWARDS FOR LANES GROUP Lanes Group plc has won a prestigious Utility Week Award for its ground-

breaking wellbeing programme that combines digital app technology and practical help for colleagues in need.

The company, which claims to be the UK’s largest independent drainage and wastewater maintenance specialist, won the Health and Safety Award in the national industry awards at a ceremony held on 10 December in London,UK.

Lanes was also a finalist for the Utility Partner of the Year Award and received a ‘Special Mention' from judges for ‘outstanding development of partnership’.

Judges were impressed with the Wellbeing App and Practitioner Programme which allows workforce happiness to be monitored via a wellbeing app and for professional support to be provided to colleagues if it is asked for.

Lanes has developed the initiative to support its work as the sole wastewater network services maintenance partner for Thames Water.

Andy Brierley, Lanes Group Technical Director, said: “Winning this Utility Week Award reflects the hard work done by our amazing team to drive health, safety and wellbeing in the workplace every single day. We work as a team and care passionately about the wellbeing of every colleague. A happy workforce delivers safer and better service, which is better for us, for Thames Water and for its 15 million customers. Receiving a Special Mention for the way we work with Thames Water as a partner was also hugely important to us, because we believe in delivering exceptional client support and value in all aspects of our service.”

The wellbeing app asked field workers how they feel every time they start a shift. If they click buttons stating they are unhappy or very unhappy, they are offered confidential support from a professional wellbeing and mental health practitioner. Office-based staff can access the same support.

Since the initiative was launched, scores of colleagues have been helped with a range of problems, including relationship breakdowns, personal debt, and depression.

Most of the issues have not been work related, but the initiative has contributed to a significant increase in workforce happiness and a 57% reduction in recruitment churn, saving £1million a year in training and recruitment costs.

Insights from programme have informed development of additional training to enhance people management skills at all levels in the organisation and an innovative careers structure called Pathway to Success.

For the Utility Partner Award, Lanes could point to initiatives that supported Thames Water’s strategic objectives, including collaboration to open the utility industry’s first 360o video training theatre, joint agreements that have led major productivity improvements, and full support for the water utility’s ‘Bin it - Don’t block it’ campaign against FOG, wipes and plastic waste.

Further to this, BAM Nuttall has renewed a framework partnership which has seen drainage specialist Lanes Group plc deliver services for scores of projects on behalf of the leading civil engineering contractor.

Lanes Group National Business Development Manager Andy Botfield and James Lees, Head of Supply Chain at BAM Nuttall, signed documents to renew the agreement which has already lasted nine years.

In that time, Lanes drainage teams have worked on projects for BAM Nuttall and its associated companies across the UK in many different sectors, including highways, nuclear energy, rail, and construction.

Andy Botfield said: “We are proud of what we have contributed on behalf of BAM Nuttall for many major projects, including development of infrastructure for the Olympic Park in London. We are also very pleased that our partnership is continuing. BAM Nuttall champions a transparent, fair and constructive approach to doing business that is appreciated by our teams across the country.”

James Lees said: “Our relationship with Lanes is based on shared values and standards which include a strong focus on health and safety, environmental protection and innovation. Lanes has demonstrated consistently high performance, shared learning and excellent communication, so we know we are always supported, and the drainage work we need doing will get done.”

The renewed rolling 12-month agreement ensures Lanes teams at 22 depots across the UK are ready to respond seamlessly to BAM Nuttall's service requirements.

In a recent project, drainage engineers from the Lanes East London depot used innovative pillow packer technology to install point liners to repair a culvert for BAM Nuttall at a major new wildlife reserve. BAM Nuttall was the main contractor responsible for creating the 670-hectare Wallasea Island Wild Coast in Essex, the largest coastal habitat creation of its kind in Europe.

Other services regularly delivered by Lanes for BAM Nuttall include rail track drainage cleaning and renewal, CCTV drainage surveys, sewer cleaning, and pipe rehabilitation, including lining.

Lanes Group also recently created a new technical guide to explain best practice in the use of No-Dig sewer and drain lining. The guide also explains the pros and cons of the main lining techniques available to construction and maintenance contractors.

Lanes Sewer Rehabilitation and Lining Manager Simon Bull said: “Pipe lining is a highly sustainable way to extend the life of defective sewers by up to 100 years. It is safer, faster, less disruptive and more cost-effective than the conventional alternative, which is to excavate a pipe and replace it. In some cases, it is the only way a pipe can reasonably be rehabilitated. However, there are still many asset owners who turn to traditional dig-ups first. This guide aims to show them that it makes sense now to consider lining as a first option for pipe rehabilitation. It also shares our expertise in showing the benefits of different lining technologies, to help asset owners make informed judgements about how their pipes can best be rehabilitated. Our whole team has helped put this guide together, providing answers to the most frequent questions we get about lining sewers and drains, so anyone needing this type of service get an accurate perspective on what can be achieved.”

Lining technology has advanced significantly in the last decade, with new techniques available to support specialist lining projects, including chemical effluent systems, large diameter pipes and complex pipe systems. This includes the development of associated technologies, including robotic milling systems for preparing pipes for lining and opening lateral connections once liners are installed.

The guide explains the principles behind cured in place pipe (CIPP) installation, and the three main techniques available - ultraviolet (UV) light CIPP, hot water CIPP, and ambient CIPP.

All three techniques involve the insertion of a liner - made from felt or flexible glass reinforced plastic. A resin, or chemical catalyst, impregnated in the liner is then cured to create a tough, waterproof pipe-within-a-pipe.

Lanes is a UK leader in pipe lining. At the end of 2018, it invested £1 million in three new UV CIPP lining systems, including one mounted on a bespoke pod for rehabilitating pipes and culverts along railways and in off-road locations.

The company has been among the first to use lining to strengthen highway drains as part of smart motorway modernisation programme, and to use UV lining to rehabilitate industrial pipes that need chemical resistance.

The guide - Lanes Best Practice: relining - is the latest in a series of guides about drainage issues published by Lanes. Other topics include surface water flooding, drainage for logistics and distribution centres, drainage in hospitals and healthcare environments, septic tanks, and disposal of fats, oils and grease.
