Book Club Selection—We've selected a book that came highly recommended. In The Misunderstood Jew, scholar Amy-Jill Levine helps Christians and Jews understand the "Jewishness" of Jesus so that their appreciation of him deepens and a greater interfaith dialogue can take place. Levine's humor and informed truth-telling provokes honest conversation and debate about how Christians and Jews should understand Jesus, the New Testament, and each other. You can purchase it yourself on Amazon.com. If you are unable to purchase it online, please contact Darcy at [email protected] and we will arrange for contactless pickup.($14). Our discussion will now take place on Oct. 6th at 6:00 PM. We are hoping to meet in person, but if not, we will have an online discussion.

Each week our attendance at our Outdoor Mass Increases! It’s so wonderful to see you!

A huge Thank You to parishioner, Mark Von Thaden owner of “Audio Concepts” for the set up and use of his sound Equipment for these outdoor Masses.

You will be required to fill out a card when you arrive, with your contact information for contact tracing purposes, so please bring your own pen. For safety reasons, please bring your lawn chair, water, sunscreen and face coverings. (some chairs will be available if needed.) What is Soulcore? It’s a contemporary core workout that pairs exercise with prayers of the rosary. It is not Yoga. It’s a new movement that consists of core strengthening and isometric exercises. It’s a beautiful sensory experience that combines candlelight, music, reflections and movement to nourish mind, body and soul while encouraging a deeper meditation on the mysteries and virtues of the rosary. It is a healing and rejuvenating experience. St. Pope John Paul ll has said “the ro-sary = healing”. God made us with souls and bodies, God wants us to worship him with our whole being. Classes are offered on Zoom 3-4 days a week. The schedule is determined each week depending on availability. Please contact Mary Combs at [email protected] to sign up or ask any questions.

Also please check out the www.soulcore.com website to find much more information about this movement and how it was started and how it is growing. There is no age requirement and no experience necessary. If you have never prayed the rosary, this is a great opportunity to learn. If you have never done much exercising, this is a great way to start strengthening your body. There is no cost at this time and no special clothing required. Join the movement and feel your body and soul grow stronger in faith and prayer. St. Peter & Paul parish is the only parish offering Soulcore in California. I guarantee you will love it if you give it a chance!!!

St. Stephen Ministry Offered at St. Joseph Marello Parish: We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises and problems don’t take a vacation

and neither has the COVID-19 virus. If you are experiencing a difficult time—emotionally, spiritually, physically, or relationally—you don’t have to suffer alone. St. Stephen Ministries are trained caregivers, ready to listen, care for and encourage you, pray with and for you, and provide one-to-one Christian care to help you through whatever it is that you are facing. Men are matched with male St. Stephen Ministers, and women are matched with female St. Stephen Ministers. It’s free. It’s confidential. And it will make a difference in your life! To find out more about St. Stephen Ministry for you or someone you know, contact us at [email protected]

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time BREAKING OPEN THE WORD

In today’s gospel, Jesus asks the disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” We claim Jesus as Lord and

savior and so let us turn to Him seeking forgiveness for the times we have failed in the life of

discipleship. . . . .

Matt 16:13-20 The story in today’s gospel reading from Matthew is a favorite in Catholic-Protestant dialogue or even debates on the role of Peter and the development of the papacy. But the papacy is a long way from the setting of this particular story. Simon Bar-Jonah confesses Jesus as the Christ. He recognizes Jesus for who He is, and Jesus responds by saying this insight was given to Him by the heavenly Father. Jesus then names him “Peter,” a Greek term meaning “Rock” (in Aramaic the term is Kephas). Jesus then says that on this “rock” (whether “rock” in this instance refers to the person of Simon Bar-Jonah or his confession of Jesus as Christ is debated) he will build His “church.” The term “church” appears in the gospels only here and in Matthew 18:17. Historically, churches developed later, after the time of Jesus, so it seems anachronistic for Matthew to use the term during the historical ministry of Jesus when no other gospel does. It’s partially for that reason that the phrase is thought to be a Matthean addition. Even so, Matthew is informing, or reminding, his audience that Peter was a spokesperson for the group, confessed Jesus as Christ, but even this was not due to his insight but from a gift of the Father.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, your disciple Simon Bar-Jonah rightly confessed you as “Messiah.” Give us the courage to confess you in our own day and age. So emboldened we will live more fully as your disciples, performing acts of service and love to those we meet, and so reflect our Christian identity. In you, the Christ, we pray Amen.

First Reading: Isaiah 22:19-23

In eighth century Jerusalem, God speaks through the Prophet Isaiah who is told to address a problem. The “master of the palace” —the equivalent of a secretary of state—was a man named Shebna. God says the He is to be demoted because He used this office for His own advantage. Today we will hear a description of what the investiture of Shebna’s successor, Eliakim, will look like.

Second Reading: Romans 11:33-36

Today’s reading concludes the part of Paul’s letter to the Romans in which he agonizes over the fate of Jewish people who have not accepted Christ. In the end, Paul simply leaves the matter in God’s hands, and concludes with a hymn that talks of the mysterious ways of Divine Providence.
