After a lifetime of abuse, three brave yo-ung people broke the silence on theabuse theyhave sufferedand tookada-

ring stand against their tormentor.Not only did local siblings Teri-Ann Ro-

binson (18), Kailee Robinson (16) and JasonRoberts (22) empower themselves bywritingabout their terrible experience on theirFacebookpage, theyhave created aplatformfor others in the same situation to do the sa-me.

In essence, their Facebook page, startedeightmonths ago, is a forumcreatedby teen-agers for teenagers to speak out against abu-se and domestic violence in their homes.

The siblings decided to go public withtheir ownabuse after realising thedesperateplight shared by many of their peers atschool.

“After we started talking about our owncircumstances, a floodgate of other, similarstories reached our ears,” says Kailee

Nowhere to turn“So many other kids in our school told me

they don’t know whom to turn to or speaktoabout abusive situationsathomeor elsew-here, which gave us the idea,” adds Teri-Ann.

A post on their page best describes theirobjective.

“Our intention was to speak out… we stilllive the horrors. Furthermore, our situationis meant to assist anyone and help is givenprivately or people are referred if nee-ded…The idea is also to empower ourselvesand others, to heal our trampled lives as best

as we can. Abuse is a crime – all forms ofabuse are crime. It is evil behaviour by cri-minals targeting soft targets. There is no ex-cuse for abuse! Stand up for your rights. Weare not victims we are survivors.”

Their personal ordeal has been endless.“Since we can remember it has always

been the same. He has abused us and ourmom verbally, emotionally, physically andeven financially,” says Kailee.

“I cannot remember the amount of timesI have wiped the spit off my mother’s face,or the amount of times we had to listen tohis threats, often financial, which preventedmy mother from leaving him for the longesttime, ” adds Terri-Ann.

No stabilityOlder brother Jason often took the brunt

of the abuse, with several physical attacks.Due to their abuser’s financial reckles-

sness the family was forced tomove 17 timesin 19 years and are again looking for accom-modation.

In a recent documentary Kailee producedfor the Facebook page, she quotes what shecalls “The Famous Lines” of the abuser.

“Keep on doing that, and just watch andsee what I do!”, “I do what I want, when Iwant and no one can stop me!”, “Get out ofmy way, Im gonna hurt you!”, are just a fewof the wounding threats thrown their wayover the years.

“Apart from never having stability, theabuse has left us afraid and without confi-dence for most of our lives. Nobody can ima-gine the hurt and pain we’ve suffered. Thisis the first time that we have spoken out andit feels good.”

A thorough investigation into allegati-ons of shoddy houses built inWallace-dene has been ordered by Human Set-

tlements Minister Connie September.This follows her visit to the township on

Monday, where she spoke to several resi-dents about alleged corruption in the hou-sing scheme.During her visit several incomplete hou-

ses were pointed out.“About 400 houses have stood incomplete

in Wallacedene over the last four years. So-me of these houses were also condemned af-ter the the National Home Builder Registra-tion Council (NHBRC) refused to sign them

off due to substandard workmanship,” saidMawethu Sila, regional chairman of theSouth African National Civic Organisasti-on (Sanco).Sila said Sanco sent enquiries to the city

and provincial government but is yet to re-ceive answers.Another resident and supposed housing

beneficiary, Dorah Maqungo, complaineddirectly to the Public Protector after she re-ceived no feedback from the provincial hou-sing board.Maqungo said she was told to break down

her shack as they planned to build her hou-se on the erf she was on. She was suppliedwith documentation in this regard.“This was five years ago but I still don’t

have a house,” she told September.

She subsequently started building herown house on the erf.“We are not happy with this. Someone is

obviously committing fraud,” she added.September committed herself to write to

the Western Cape Department of HumanSettlements and the City of Cape Town Me-tropolitanMunicipality to get clarity on the-se allegations.“As the national Department of Human

The innocent pleading eyes of previous-ly abused or neglected animals look upat you, willing to give their hearts as

you step into the Uitsig Animal RescueCentre.

It is unthinkable that the some 500 res-cued animals on these premises might bewithout a home in three months time.

The organisation last week received no-tice to vacate the smallholding nearFisantekraal to make space for the Green-ville Garden City housing development.

It is a very real possibility that these ani-mals could lose their lives if the organisa-tion loses its facilities. However, for the fer-vent, tough-as-nails animal lovers and pas-sionate founders and members of thisexceptional organisation, it’s not an option.

Massive mandate“Failure is not an option. It is a big worry

for us, but for the sake of the animals wecannot afford to not succeed,” said foundingmember Denay Saunders, about the organi-sation’s quest to now find new land to homethe animals.

Her love and genuine concern for thewel-fare of animals is visible in the unselfishwork she, her 15 staff members and othervolunteers have put into the organisationsince its inception in 2009.

A former veterinarian assistant, it washer intention to rescue neglected, aban-doned and abused animals in the northernsuburbs of Cape Town and to nurse themback to health, provide themwith a safe andloveable haven, to rehabilitate them and tofind them permanent homes.

In fact, the centre is the only pro-life, pro-quality-of-life animal rescue haven withpremises in the northern suburbs. Thusthey also house animals from various othershelters and animal welfare organisationssuch as the Lucky Lucy Foundation, Adopt-a-Pet and the Animal Rescue Team.

“We do not believe in euthanising ani-mals and will only do so in exceptional cir-cumstances.We believe in providing all ouranimals with quality of life, sufficient food,shelter and attention, until such time wecan re-home them with a suitable family,”says Denay.

“We have had great success with ouradoptions,while at the same timeweunder-take sterilisation and animal care educa-tion programmes in underprivileged areasand townships, to address the problem atthe core. Additionally, all the animals werescue stay on at the centre for anunlimitedperiod of time,” she says.

According to Denay, they have no gripewith the land owners, as they were awarefrom the start that the land was earmarkedfor development and their stay would onlybe temporary.

Animal rescue vision“Our landlordswere very goodandgener-

ous to us over the years and we realise theimportance of housing. It’s just that it camedown on us rather suddenly and we now

have tomove very fast to raise the funds weneed to re-establish the centre,” she said.

The centre envisions purchasing theirown land, registering it in a trust and re-building their shelters on it for the exclu-sive use of the rescue centre.

“We have been working, for some timenow, onavision for anew largerworld classanimal rescue centre fromwhichwe can ac-complish muchmore than even what we donow.

“We are solely dependent on public do-nors and our own fundraising, but believethat with the help of the community we canreach or target in time,” she said, and adds:“Please everyone, we have only 90 days toraise what we need. The alternative is un-thinkable and will crush so many of us.”

CEO of Garden Cities John Matthewsconfirmed that they were in the planningphases of phase 2 of the project, but theyhadgiven the farm manager of the Uitsig Farmappropriate legal notice that theywould on-ly require the land by the end of next year.

He said that the lease between the farm

manager and the centre stipulated threemonths but this notice periodwas not to hisknowledge envoked as yet.

“I am however happy to engage with thecentre in order to find a solution,” he said.

“We are already negotiating with theLucky Lucy Foundation who is also on thelandasweacknowledge the existence of andthe need for the animal shelters.”

The organisation would need about R5million, of which they have raised R50 000to date.

An illicit wood yard in Joubert Street,Kraaifontein, remains a thorn in theflesh of nearby residents.

Only known as Woodyard, the businessreceived a compliance order from the Cityof Cape Town Law Enforcement to removeall thewood and cease all business activitieson the premises three weeks ago .Gawie Botha, regional inspector at Law

Enforcement said: “Following complaintsfrom neighbours we visited the site. It soonbecame clear that the business did not havethe correct legal zoning in place to trade andwas guilty of a land use transgression. Theproperty is zoned for residential use only.“We ordered the owner to stop all business

activities and remove thewood from the pre-mises within 7 days. If not we would be for-ced to confiscate the wood and restore the

premises to an acceptable standard to en-sure the quality of life of neighbouring re-sidents”.Furthermore, according to Botha, the

case will also appear in the municipalcourt on 17 April.Complaints from the public included no-

ise emanating from trucks delivering thewood, wood being stacked up alongneighbouring walls and an abundance ofrodents.One of the complainants who wishes to

remain anonymous, last week alleged thathe observed continued activity on the pre-mises, even after the city gave the order.“I have lived here for 35 years and this

is a discrace. Not only is thewood pile visi-ble three meters above my wall, but it po-ses a health risk, due to the increase inmi-ce,” he said.This neighbour allegedly witnessed cus-

tomers at the shop a week ago – a fortnight

after the compliance order was served – aswell as a truck delivering wood.“It seems to me that this business is igno-

ring all efforts from the City’s Law Enforce-ment,” he said.TygerBurger ascertained that the business

has in the meantime applied for the correctzoning status.Ward councillor Gerhard Fourie confirmed

that the application would be tabled beforecouncil by May or June.Headdedhowever, that untill such time, the

business is not allowed to operate.“For too long people have been allowed to

trade illegally using the fact that they havemade application for business zoning, as anexcuse,” he said.TygerBurger could not obtain comment

from the business owners, despite an at-tempt to do so.On a late afternoon and earlymoring visit

to the Woodyard, the office of the premiseswas closed, but piles of wood were still hea-ped on the premises.

2 April oor die jongste verhogings in tarieweverslag gedoen (“Rate hike in line with con-sumer inflation”) en lesers ingelig oor watom te verwag.Hiervolgens is die Stad se kapitale begro-

ting van R6 miljard, en operasionele begro-ting van R27,8 miljard reeds op Maandag 24Maart aan raadslede voorgelê vir kommen-taar teen Maandag 7 April.“Die finale begroting sal aan die einde van

Mei goedgekeur word, met ingang op 1 Ju-lie,” het hy gesê.Van der Merwe sê van die tien stadsdepar-

temente sal “elk insette lewer oor wat hullenodig het in die begroting”.Hy sê daar is R700 000 afgestaan aan elk

van die 110 wyke vir wyksprojekte, wat by-voorbeeld insluit spoedkalmering, straatlig-te en die opknapping van sportvelde.“Saammet die begroting gaan ook tariewe

ting is die groeikoers per stadsdiens effensminder as die vorige boekjaar s’n, maarsteeds in ooreenstemming met inflasiegroei.Hy sêbelasting is verhoogmet 6 %(teenoor

6,10 % in 2013), elektrisiteit met 7,6 % (teen-oor 7,86 % in 2013), water en sanitasie met8 % (teenoor 9,53 % in 2013) en vaste afvalmet 5,9 %.

Groot ongelukkigheid heers onder ledevan die Brackenfell-posduifklub, wattans sonder hul eie klubhuis sit.

Hulle is inAugustus verlede jaar deurdieStad Kaapstad kennis gegee om hul klub-huis van die afgelope 40 jaar te verlaat, so-dat plek gemaak kan word vir die nuwewetstoepassingskantoor.

Dié kantoor sal, wanneer dit oor ’n paarmaande open, sowat 20 wetstoepassershuisves, en dien as ’n tipe hoofbasis in dienoordelike voorstede.

’n Posduifklublid, Jan Havenga, wat alsedert 1977 aan dié klub behoort, is egteralles behalwe gelukkig met die besluit.

Oudste sportklub“Ons is die oudste sportklub in die dorp,

maar tog sit ons nou sonder ’n klubhuis enmoet ons lede Parow toe ry vir ’n klubhuis,wat ons met ’n ander klub moet deel.

“Ons het lank met die rugbyklub gedeelvoor hulle na die nuwe sportvelde getrekhet. Die Lionsklub het ook vroeër jare metons gedeel,” het hy aanTygerBurger vertel.

“Van ons lede is die meeste 60 jaar en ou-er – die oudste is 80. Ons is nie gelukkig dat

ons klubhuis net so van ons weggeneem isnie, sonder om vir ons ’n ander heenkomete gee nie,” voeg hy by.

Carin Brynard, raadslid en voorsittervan die Stad se veiligheid- en sekerheids-portefeulje, sê die raad het ongelukkig geenander keuse gehad as om die huurkontrakvan die posduifklub te kanselleer nie, aan-gesien daar geen ander beskikbare raads-persele vir die beoogde wetstoepassings-kantoor in Brackenfell of Kraaifontein wasnie.

B’fell­posduifklubsonder heenkome

Die oudste kerk in Brackenfell vier die ko-mende naweek van 11 tot 13 April sy 70stebestaansjaar.

Die NG Kerk Brackenfell het in 1944 ont-staan met die afstigting van die NG KerkKuilsrivier.

“Alhoewel die geboue effe van vorm ver-ander het oor die jare, is die kerkgebou oor-kant die Laerskool Brackenfell steeds ’nunieke baken in die dorp,” sê Ettiene Ver-ster van die kerk.

“In daardie jare was die kerk bekend asdie NG Kerk Kruispad en het in 1978 synaam verander na NG Kerk Brackenfell.Soos Brackenfell as voorstad uitgebrei het,het verskillende gemeentes afgestig en hetdie gemeentes van La Rochelle, Heidekop-pie, Brackenfell-Wes en Brackenfell-Prote-ahoogte tot stand gekom,” vertel hy.

Die naam Brackenfell-moedergemeenteis dus baie toepaslik. Die feesnaweek skopaf op Vrydag 11 April met ’n feestelike ker-mis. Kerrievetkoeke, boereworsrolle, pot-jiekos, pannekoeke, poedings envars gebakis maar net ’n paar van die eetgoed wat tekoop sal wees. Vars vleis en groente is ookte koop, soos op ’n egte boere-basaar.

Daar gaan Vrydagaand ’n spookhuiswees vir die kinders.

Saterdagoggend word die kermis voort-gesitmet ekstra aktiwiteite soos Paint Ball,springkasteele en trapkarre.

Op Sondag 13 April om 9:15 word ’n spesi-ale herdenkingsdiens gehou in die gemeen-tesentrum, waartydens oud-gemeentelede’n paar staaltjies sal deel uit die verlede.

Die verrigtinge sal afgesluit word met ’nstukkie verjaarsdagkoek vir elkeen.

Two German Shepherd dogs from Dur-banville are not only obedience cham-pions, but have also qualified to beco-

me tracker dog champions.Angie Brooke of Langeberg Ridge and her

dog, Quando, qualified on Saturday 29March in the working trials of the Walmerand Suburbs Kennel Club in Port Elizabethand Durbanville resident Sheila Wills, withher dog Bronte, qualified on Sunday 30March in theworking trials of thePortEliza-beth Kennel Club.Both handlers are members of the Cape

Handlers Dog Club in Milnerton.The dogs were entered into the most seni-

or level of working trials, the Tracker DogIII level. The trial involves anumber of secti-ons which all have to be passed in order forthe dog to qualify for a certificate.

The first section involves the dog follo-wiing the trackof a personwhohaswalkedthrough a field three hours earlier anddropped three articles on the track. Thedog, followed by the handler on a long line,must follow the trackand findand indicateall three articles. There are up to 11 cor-ners on the track.The next section takes place in an area

of rough ground inwhich an article is hid-den. The dog must check every quarter ofthe area, find the article and either barkor indicate to the handler where it is hid-den.The third section consists of the dog fin-

ding four small articles – each about thesize of a matchbox - in four minutes afterthey have been hidden in another area ofrough grassland. The articles would have

been held and scented by the judge for aminu-te.There is also a send-away and redirection

section in which the dog must run out 50 mto a visible object. The dog must stop whencommanded and then, when redirected by thehandler, run either to the right or the left foranother 20 m and stop when commanded.The dog must also do a 10 minute downstay

with the handler completely out of sight,then a section of heelwork, where it muststay close to the handler even if the handlerchanges pace or walks close to other people,dogs or cars. Bok Radio en TygerBurgerse bootvaart ’n belewenis“Hoe op aarde gaan hierdie magdom staalbo-op die water bly?” het Elzeth Austin ang-stig gedink toe sy die MSC Sinfonia se loop-plank die eerste keer betree het... met beeldeuit die fliek “Titanic” wat deur haar kopmaal.

Maar toe sy eers aan boord is, was dié ge-dagtes gou vergete. The Daniel and Friends Fund presented trai-ning in cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) and choking first aid to parents andcaretakers on Saturday 15 March at the Altadu Toit Center in Kuils River.

They were trained by Michelle van derMerwe of Mikki-bee Training, who offeredher training as a donation to the Daniel andFriends Fund to make it possible for morepeople to attend the course at a discountedprice.

Cape Town learners are set to receivean enormous boost to their knowled-ge of this year’s grade 12 setworkthanks to the staging of Amaza at theArtscape Theatre.

To be performed from 5 to 14 Mayand endorsed by the Western CapeEducation Department, Amazaforms part of the Artscape educatio-nal youth development programmewhich aims to promote social cohesi-on, good citizenship and empower-ment through the arts.Amaza, a prescribed book by ZS

Qangule for grade 12 learners, hasbeen adapted into a fully-fledgedXho-sa play by Thokozile Ntshinga usingprofessional artists to capture the es-sence of the book.

It is in its fourth consecutive sea-son and aimed at grade 12 Xhosa lear-ners from the greater Cape Townarea, giving them the opportunity toexperience the play in their own lan-guage and further equip them withessential skills to become perfor-mers.

Over 5 700 learners from 60 previ-ously disadvantaged schools, and thegeneral public, saw the production in2013.

“The purpose of the educationalprogramme is to assist grade 12 lear-ners academically by presentingplays which are taught as literatureon a theatre stage, therefore puttingit in its intended setting”, saysMarle-ne Le Roux, director for ArtscapeAu-dience Development and Education.

“We will also be introducing lear-ners to theatre anddramaproductionof a high quality, thereby buildingthe audience of the future”, conclu-ded Marlene.Amaza is an 18 cast member thril-

It is often said that a relationship with yo-ur band partners is very similar to a mar-riage.Brackenfell duo Tony and LanaNelson de-

cided to test that one step further - they actu-ally got married.

The husband andwife teamstarted perfor-ming together about three years ago but thechemistry they exhibited on stage was morethan just a show, resulting in theirmarriageafter just one year.

Lana says performing was somethingshe’d wanted to do for as long as she can re-member, but life happened and she got mar-ried, had her son, and never really got to geton stage.

Then when she got divorced she decided:“If I’m not going to get into music now, thenI never will.”

Lana was performing with another actwhen she met Tony. “I was lurking in thebackgroundwatchingherperform,”he says.

“I decided it was time to rub shoulders, li-terally,” he says. Tony says he thought shelooked quite attractive on stage and thoughthe’d go and introduce himself.

At first TonyperformedwithLana’s previ-ous band but Lana soon left the band and joi-ned Tony. From there they started perfor-ming together, got engaged and gotmarried.

“It’s just one of those things we thoughtwouldwork,” Tony says, adding that it’s bet-ter performing as amarried couple than justfriends, as it cuts out the issues when diffe-rent families are involved.

“Especiallywhenyoustart touring. It’s ve-ry difficult tomanage if you are two separatefamilies intertwined in themusic industry,”Tony states.

He himself was born into amusical familyof “weekend performers” who would get to-gether every Friday. “I would be sitting the-re on one side as a little child rubbing theold LPs on the carpets, getting smacked be-cause of it.”

DevelopedWhen he started school in George, he joi-

ned the cadet band and was part of the win-ning Western Cape band two years in a row.From there he developed his musical skillsand, taking classes, went on to try his hand

at singing. He even has a Grade 4music qua-lification in trumpet.

The trumpet was a little noisy for his folksand neighbours though, so he picked up theguitar.

Tonyhasbeenactively involved in themu-sic industry for about 14 years.

While Tony and Lana perform as a coverband, they have been working on a debut al-bum for a while now.

“We haven’t been rushing it, but we feelit’s time to get something out there,” Tonysays. Their debut album will feature ele-ments of country rock and country pop withinfluences from bands like Lonestar and La-dy Antebellum.

Lana points out that the album, which

they hope to release at the end of the year,will also have a classic rock feel: “That’s so-mething that I really love.”

The release of their albumdepends on fun-ding and the completion of the studio theywant to record in, which is still being builtaccording to international standards. Oncethat is completed though, theyhope to traveland promote their music overseas. ‘

“Stating that we want to do the countryrock genre, as a duo, there aren’t many outthere in South Africa, so we feel that thereis a good market for it,” Tony says.

Occasionally, Tonywill play one of his ori-ginal songs, “Weskus, Hier wil ek Bly”, attheir shows around the Northern Suburbs.“I wrote the song for the people of the WestCoast,” he says.

Lana is hoping to record her first originalsingle within the next four months. “It’s asong that I’m hoping will make an impact,”she says, adding that the English soft count-ry song is about child abuse.

Until their original music is released, lo-cal music fans can keep an eye out for Tonyand Lana playing at local venues.

bei sy ouers is ook musikante. Sy pa het ki-taar gespeel en syma het gesing en hulle het’n orkes gehad toe Lukas klein was. “Ek ont-hou ons het altyd in die huis musiek gehad,altyd.”Hy was net vyf jaar oud toe hy sy eerste

kitaar gekry het en op ses begin lesse kryhet, maar toe hy sy baskitaar gekry het, washy verlief. Dis nou rondom dié tyd dat hy syeerste orkes begin het. “Dit was vet pret,”sê hy.Wanneer hy nie sy eie musiek speel nie,

speel hy ander kunstenaars semusiek op dieradio as ontbytomroeper by Radio KaapseKansel. “Vir ’n musikant is dit ’n uitdagingom so vroeg wakker te word.”

bestuursafrigting en hy fokus spesifiek opmense in die kreatiewe bedryf.Hy het ook drie kinders wat hom besig

Die vloek van Kupfertal het ’n inwonervan Durbanville behoorlik beet.

Wynand Theron (67), ’n gebore Vry-stater, het reeds 34vandie 44boekeversamelwat Doc Immelman in sy lewe geskryf het.Maar, Die vloek van Kupfertal en nog negeander boeke, ontwyk hom.

Theron se belangstelling in dié bekendeNamibiese skrywer, wat verlede jaar op 9Maart inWindhoek oorlede is, het in 1975 be-gin toe sy nefies vir hom die boek Vallei vandie heilige vure as Kersgeskenk gegee het.Dié boek is tot vandag toe sy gunsteling.

“Ek was nog altyd lief vir Namibië en diefeit dat al Doc se romans in dié land afspeel,het natuurlik in my kraal gepas. Niemandkon oor Namibië skryf soos hy nie!”

Self was Theron egter net een keer in Na-mibië – in 1967 vir drie weke as weermagsol-daat vir opleiding op Grootfontein.

Theronwas 28 toe hy sy eerste Doc Immel-man-boek ontvang het, maar dit was eers indie 90’s dat hy aktief beginhet omDoc se boe-ke te versamel.

“Ek het gou besef dat dit nogal skaarsitems is. Nie net omdat hy ’n gewilde skry-wer was nie, maar ook omdat die oplae vandie meeste van sy boeke maar laag was –meestal minder as 5 000.”

Uit nood het hy Doc in 2003 ’n paar keerinWindhoek gebel enmet homgekorrespon-deer. “Hywas so gaaf om virmy ’n hele paarvan sy boeke, waarvan hy ses ondertekenhet, per vliegtuig saam met sy vrou, Rya,Kaap toe te stuur.”

Hoewel hy hom nooit persoonlik ontmoethet nie, is die brief wat Doc in Mei 2003 aanhom geskryf het, en koerantartikels wat oordie jare oorDoc verskynhet, vir Theron kos-baar en het dit ’n bêreplek in ’n spesiale lêergekry.

“Syboeke is so gewild dat daar in later jareherdrukke gepubliseer is,maarhulle het nie

dieselfde ‘karakter’ as die oorspronklikesnie,” meen hy.

“Doc was ’n regte platjie met ’n oog vir ’nmooi nooi. Al sy boeke het dan ook so ’n lek-ker romantiese streep deur hulle,” vertel hy.

“Ek is baie gelukkig om 34 van Doc se boe-ke opmyboekrak te hê.Van sy boeke is egterbitter skaars, veral Die vloek van Kupfertal,waarvan die oplaag maar net 2 000 in 1978was. Doc se dogter, Yvette Muldoon, het virmy gesê sy soek self ook daardie boek met’n seer hart!”

Ander vloekHoewel Die vloek van Kupfertal hom bly

ontwyk, het Theron ’n ander “vloek” oorwin– dié van depressie. Toe hy in 2002 as seniorbestuurder van die pensioen-administrasie-afdeling bySanlam, afgetreehet, het reaktie-we depressie toegeslaan. “Dit het gevoel ofek in ’n leë gat instap en moes my lewe vanvooraf opbou.”

Hy het vyf jaar klank aan depressie gelyvoor hy eindelik ná terapie daarin kon slaagom te herfokus en herbesin oor sy lewe.

Hy het in daardie jaar betrokke geraak bydie depressie- en angsgroep, waarvan hy dieafgelope ses jaar die voorsitter is. Hy is ookdie afgelope sowat 30 jaar die voorsitter vandie Onze Molen-huiseienaarsvereniging,waar hy die kampvegter is vir die inwonersse regte en hom beywer het vir die opknapvan die historiese meul.

Self ’n skrywerHy is ook ’nkranige skrywer.Hyhet onder

meer navorsing gedoen oor die Laingsburg-vloedramp en ’n Power Point-aanbiedingdaaroor saamgestel, wat tans in die Laings-burg-museum en op die webblad van dieLaingsburg-vloedramp vertoon word.

Hy het in die 1990’s ’n boek, Trippense indie Theron-familietrommel, oor sy familiege-skiedenis geskryf. Al die Therons in Suid-Afrika is afstammelinge van die Franse hu-genoot, Jacques Theron. “Ek is ook familie

van die beroemde Hollywood-aktrise, Char-lize Theron,” skerts hy.

Hy stel ook belang in ou kerkgeboue. Hysal spesiaal van die grootpad afdraai om naklein dorpies se kerkgebou te gaan kyk enfoto’s daarvan te neem. Dié op Graaff-Reinetis die mooiste, meen hy.

En dan is daar sy belangstelling in Nasase ruimteprogram…

Indrukwekkend vir ’n man wat eintlik ’nB.Com-graad behaal het – destyds deeltydsgestudeer het aan die buitemuurse fakulteitvan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, van-dag die US-bestuurskool.

Dis nie net Doc Immelman-boeke watTheron versamel nie, hy het ook ’n indruk-wekkende versameling gedenkkoeverte,

waarvan sy kosbaarste die koevert ter her-denking van die vieringe in 1985 van die 100-jarige bestaan van die parlementsgebou. Hyhetmet grootmoeite dié koevert deur die lei-ers vandie vier grootste politieke partye vandaardie tyd laat onderteken, naamlik PWBotha (NP), AP Treurnicht (KP), Van ZylSlabbert (PFP – Progressiewe Federale Par-ty) en WA Sutton (Nuwe Republieke Party).

An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race slated to be held at theV&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27April.

The World Triathlon Cape Town race willserve as the second stop on the eight-citytour which starts in Auckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town is one of only two cities to de-but on the WTS calendar in 2014, with Chica-go also hosting an event for the first time.

The world’s top triathletes have confir-med their participation in theCapeTown legof the series. With eight of the top ten elitemen on the start list, spectators can expecta tight, action packed race. Local hero Ri-chard Murray (ranked 5th) will take on Ma-rio Mola (ESP), who narrowly beat him by18 seconds in the World Cup season openerin Mooloolaba last month, as well as fellowSpaniard Javier Gomez who is number oneon the WTS rankings. With 15 and sevenWorld Series wins under their respectivebelts, Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jona-than are the most successful elite athletes inthe history of the series and will be lookingto retain their position.

Ladies hold their ownThe elite ladies race will certainly rival

the men’s in terms of action. With the topthree ladies on the WTS rankings, JodieStimpson (GBR), Non Stanford (GBR) andAnne Haug (GER) confirmed, the competiti-onwill beno less intense than the elitemen’srace. Olympic silver medallist Lisa Norden(SWE) will also be making her ITU World Se-ries comeback in Cape Town after the 2012Olympics. Along with Helen Jenkins (GBR),she’ll be looking to regain her former ITUWorld Triathlon Series glory.

Die Kaapstad-meesters-swemspan hettweede geeïndig in die 30ste Suid-Afri-kaanse meesters-swembyeenkoms, watonlangs in Bloemfontein gehou is.

Altesaam 401 swemmers van oor diehele land het aan die kampioenskapsby-eenkoms deelgeneem.

Meesters-swem maak voorsiening virswemmers in alle ouderdomsgroepe van19 jaar en ouer. Die ouderdomme wordin vyfjaargroepe opgedeel. Alle afstandeen swemdissiplines word ingesluit.

Die plaaslike spanne was die Kaap-stad-meesters met 45 swemmers, KaapseDolphins met twaalf en Wynlande-mees-ters met nege.

Die Kaapstad-meesters het ook dievoorgeetrofee, wat toegeken word aandie klub met die meeste punte per swem-mer wat deelgeneem het, gewen.

Miems Swanpoel (79) is die oudste lidvan die klub wat aan die byeenkomsdeelgeneem het en het twee goue en twee

bronsmedaljes verower.Sanderina Kruger (65) het uitstekend

geswem en drie wêreldrekords laat spat.In die 50 m-vryslag het sy die wêreldre-kord gebreek in ’n tyd van 31:40 sek. Indie 100 m-vryslag het sy ’n spogtyd van1:09.63 behaal en toe in die 200 m-vryslagmet ’n tyd van 2:39:00 gewen. Hierdie re-kords moet nog amptelik deur FINA er-ken word. In totaal het Sanderina negegoue medaljes gewen en is beloon metdie byeenkoms se victrix ludorum-tro-fee.

Die 15de FINA-wêreld-meesters-swembyeenkoms vind van 27 Julie tot 10Augustus in Montreal, Kanada plaas.Sanderina Kruger en Rod Holshausengaan hieraan deelneem.

Die volgende meesters-gala – aange-bied deur Westelike Provinsie-meesters-swem – word op 10 April vanaf 18:30 bydie Langstraat-swembad, Kaapstad ge-hou.
