The week got off to a terriblestart for a resident of ForestHeights after tragedy strucktwice in one day.

Not only did Eva Breda, 46, loseher home and possessions when herhouse burned down on Monday, shealso lost her father on the same day.

The morning began early forBreda when she went to Eerste Riv-er Hospital after receiving newsthat her father was at the point ofdeath.

She had left her home before08:00, leaving her five childrenalone at home.

Breda had been so taken backthat she was practically speechlessand could not remember the exacttime she had left home.

She had two wendy houses on herplot which were leased out to twodifferent families. Both the wendyhouses were engulfed in the flamesalong with her own house. ChrystalCloete, one of the boarders in thewendy house said she was wokenup by shouting.

“I woke up and heard Eva’s

daughter shout that the house wasburning. At that time one of theback rooms had already been de-stroyed,” Cloete said.

She then woke up her childrenand husband and told them to getout of the wendy house. Cloete thenran to the other wendy house towake up the other family.

She recalls that the fire startedaround 07:45.

Cloete said the fire departmentonly arrived on the scene at 09:00.“They could have saved the wendyhouse at the back if they came soon-er. When they came, they didn’t

even have enough water in theirtanks,” said Cloete.

She said the firemen found a firehydrant at a house across the streetand put their hose in there to getmore water to extinguish theflames.

According to Kleinvlei policespokesperson, W/O AnnaclettaMothoalo, Breda’s granddaughterwho is three years old, was alleged-ly playing with a cigarette lighter.It is unknown what caught flamefirst before the house caught alight.

Mothoalo said children shouldnot be left unattended, however in

this circumstance it is understand-able.

Cloete will now be staying withher mother who lives next door.

The department of social develop-ment has been doing their share byhelping the families with clothesfor their children. The familieshave also received counselling.

Mothoalo advises communitymembers not to leave their childrenunattended over the holidays.

Harmful things such as matches,paraffin, poison, chemicals andmedication should also be kept outof the reach of children.

Sport clubs in Bellville, espe-cially athletics and cycling, areextremely concerned over theirfuture, as they will not be ableto train at the Velodrome dur-ing its development over thecoming years.

A meeting to weigh up optionsand find a workable solution to ac-commodate athletics clubs andschool athletics when the BellvilleVelodrome will be developed fromnext year, was held at the stadiumlast week.

A business and retail park, ho-tel, conference centre and residen-tial units will be erected at the Ve-lodrome in a R3 billion project.

Alexander Dykes, District SixManager of the City of Cape Town,said those attending the meetingwill form a working group, withthe purpose of finding alternativeaccommodation for athletic fix-tures and practises when the sta-dium closes in 2012. TygerBurgerreported on clubs’ concerns overhaving no alternative in Augustthis year (“Geriewe bedreig –Sportklubs oor nuwe on-twikkeling”).

Alternative space is also neces-sary for the cycling club, as wellas storage space for athletic equip-ment.

One of the questions raised atthe meeting was by Gert Engelbre-cht, representative of the BellvilleAthletic Club, who enquired

about valid contracts that were inplacebetween the cycling clubandthe City of Cape Town, but Alexan-der said all but one of the plannedfixtures for next year have been al-located to other venues.

“I am not sure about the Top 10Championship,” he said.

He said it was necessary to ex-plore options to accommodate thecycling and athletics clubs, butthat the athletic season endedaround April and that most majorevents have been catered foraround the country.

“To my view the 2011 and 2012season is done and dusted,” Alex-ander said.

He said there are a number ofrunning clubs (or tracks) in CapeTown, including Vygieskraal in

Athlone, Wesfleur in Atlantis,Parow, Khayelitsha, Blue Downs,Kuils River and at UWC andCPUT.

At Kuils River, Wesfleur andParow however, there are nostands, while UWC is not underthe City’s control.

Green Point Stadium will becompleted next year March, ac-cording to James Evans of SA Ath-letics, who also attended the meet-ing.

Travelling distances to alterna-tive fields is a major concern forall the sport clubs, due to costs in-volved.

Gert voiced his concern over avenue for 200 athletes to do pre-season training. He suggested theclubs still train at the Velodrome

during the first phases of theproject.

“I have spoken to the developerandhe said itwouldbepossible forus to train there, as the tartan willonly be laid over the last threemonths of the project,” Gert said.

Freddie Prince, manager forDistrict Sport and Recreation forthe City of Cape Town said an au-dit of challenges will be done andthe City will look for solutions.

“If bookings protocol at otherclubs are managed properly, halfour problems will be solved,” hesaid.

He said it was imperative thatthis group sat down to start plot-ting fixture lists.

A follow-up meeting was sched-uled for January 2011.

Movie about euthanasia will upset pet loversDESIREÉ RORKE

Can the battle against pet over-pop-ulation be won? This is the questionan independent filmmaker RiaanHendricks is doing his utmost tounravel with the movie Wild Dog –a movie the NSPCA would rathernot have see the light of day.

This film, which is still to be com-pleted, is an eye-opener that turnsthe spotlight on the plight of hun-dreds of thousands of domesticatedcats and dogs that are euthanisedeach year. Especially now, over thefestive season when these numbersincrease significantly.

It is an observational documenta-ry, which draws the viewer into thelives of the people struggling tostem the tide of unwanted animalsand its impact on society.

The film focuses on and plays offat the Helderberg Animal Welfarekennels where approximately 140animals are euthanised each month– a conservative estimate accordingto Julia Evans, general manager atthe organisation.

This kennel serves only the Hel-derberg and surrounding area, andalready cannot cope with the influxof unwanted animals. Sick animalsor those with behaviour problemsare put out first, to open up spacefor new animals coming in, and sothe cycle continues.

“We absolutely hate euthanasia,but we are chock-a-block – our ken-nels, foster care and adoption sys-tems. We are left with no choice,”she says.

According to Evans, the situationhad reached crisis level years ago,

and that something drastic needs tobe done.

Evans supports this movie, andhopes that it will bring the neces-sary awareness.

Alarmingly, Evans and the Hel-derberg Animal Welfare, is the onlyorganisation TygerBurger spoke to,willing to blow the lid off the eutha-nasia debacle.

Both the AACL (Animal Anti-Cruelty League) and the SPCA inCape Town, have declined to makepublic the number of animals euth-anised by them.

René Southwood, manager at theAACL, is of the opinion that thesefigures will make the public “an-

gry” and that this kind of aware-ness won’t solve the problem either.

Also, Sarah Scarth from theSPCA in Cape Town wishes not torelease their euthanasia statistics,but does confirm that the numberof stray animals admitted over thepast few months has increased.

“The numbers of strays admittedin November was up by 39 percentand this puts even more pressureon our kennels ... At this time of theyear we also see the number of sur-rendered animals increase – ani-mals handed over to our animalcare centre by owners who no long-er want them or can afford them.

Christine Kuch, spokesperson of

the NSPCA (National Council ofSPCAs), slammed Hendricks andthe film, saying that this kind ofpublicity will turn the public to pro-life (no-kill shelters), resulting inthe SPCA losing financial benefac-tors.

“We also question certain aspectsof the film in legal terms,” she said,referring to Hendricks filming theanimal inspector of Helderberg An-imal Welfare going to a house topick up a sick dog.

According to Kuch, the inspectorin the film must be qualified, andmust have the magisterial authori-ty to come onto the property to re-move the animal and that a minoris not allowed to be interviewed.

Hendricks however confirmedthat the girl in the film is 18 and thatthe particular animal owner con-tacted the Helderberg Animal Wel-fare and requested them to comeand take their sick dog.

“We worry about the impressionthis movie will give the public. Itundermines our message,” shesaid, and says Hendricks must becareful not to get himself prosecut-ed.

“The sad reality is that ‘any portin a storm’ is not an option. Findingsomeone to take an animal to avoideuthanising it, is irresponsible. An-imal collectors are devious andmany people are misguided whenthey take an animal, especially ifthey are told or have been led to be-lieve that euthanasia might be im-minent. This is emotional black-mail, impulse adopting and thelong-term welfare of the animal isput at risk. It is inhumane to con-

fine animals for long periods.“Stress results and this may lead

to behavioural problems whichmay never be overcome – renderingthe animal even less likely to be‘adoptable’ or to settle in a home,”the NSPCA’s standard policy on eu-thanasia reads.

Filmmaker Hendricks howeverdisagrees with Kuch and hopes thatthe NSPCA will support the movie.

“What makes the story movingand engaging is the compassionwith which such emotional de-manding work is done.”

He is now seeking public fundingfor the completion of the film via ht-tp://www.indiegogo.com/wilddog(website contains trailer).

Hendricks hopes that once thefilm has been completed it will beused countrywide by communitiesand animal welfare organisationsto make the public aware of the cri-sis and the importance of sterilisa-tion.

The fact that sterilisation is theonly long-term solution is one thingall animal welfare organisationsagree upon.

According to Tamsin Nel, CEO ofSA Mass Animal SterilisationTrust, sterilisation is financiallymore viable than euthanasia.

Her research shows the cost ofone female dog being sterilisedcoming to R431, compared with thecost of one rescued animal being eu-thanased coming to R572, after 10days of kennelling.

She came to the conclusion thatmass euthanasia would be cheaperonly in the short-term and only ifkennelling is not required.

Christmas will be under cover for a fami-ly that lost all in a fire.

On Monday 17 October the Harley familyin Delft lost everything when their home wasdestroyed by fire.

Stranded, stressed and homeless, they ap-proached local organisation Afrika Tikkun,based at the Mandela Peace Park, for help.

Afrika Tikkun is an NGO that provides ed-ucation, health and social services to chil-dren, youth and their families through cen-tres of excellence in South African town-ships.

Their aim is to empower communities todevelop new generations of productive citi-zens.

The management team listened to theirplight and immediately sprang into action toassist the family.

After the family was provided with de-briefing and trauma counselling by a socialworker, they then addressed the need forfood security by providing the family withfood parcels and daily feeding.

Social worker Nolusindiso Mvandaba ex-plained that for the immediate need of cloth-ing, bedding and toiletries, the family was as-sisted with donations from their reactionunit.

“Because Afrika Tikkun’s mission is toprovide a holistic approach in addressingpsycho-social needs of young people andtheir families in South African townships,our intervention did not end there.

“We visited the home and saw the disasterthat the fire had caused. The managementteam, led by Nasheema Ismail, then ap-proached stakeholders in the community toassist with building material.

“We would like to thank Sea Kay Engineer-ing Services Western Cape, who are one ofthe companies building houses in N2 Gate-

way, who donated some building materialsand plumbing equipment.

“After assessing the damage caused by thefire, it was evident that more building mate-rial was needed and we assisted with furthermaterials. There was also great support fromMenMakingaDifference,which is oneof ourdevelopment programmes, for assisting uswith the hard labour,” she said.

Mvandaba added that the organisationwas constantly faced with similar situations

when disasters happened and accessing gov-ernment services does not always come atthe needed time.

“We therefore ask that companies in thebuilding/construction sector as well asclothing and appliances sectors reach outand assist with donations, or if they can bepart of a database when these disasters hap-pen,” she said.

Libraries host holiday eventsThe City of Cape Town’s library and informa-tion services department will be hosting se-veral activities at selected libraries this holi-day as part of their annual holiday program-me.

Activities include puppet shows, arts andcraft activities, story-telling, DVD screenings,competitions, puzzles, games and face-pain-ting.

The following libraries in the northern su-

burbs will host holiday programmes: Bellvil-le, Bonteheuwel, Delft South, Durbanville, El-sies River, Fisantekraal, Goodwood, Koeberg,Mfuleni, Milnerton, Ravensmead, Scottsdeneand Table View.

‘Hookah pipes are not safe’GARY VAN DYK

Parents are being warned against buyinghookah pipes for their children.

This warning comes from dedicated anti-drug campaigner in the community DhakirChristians who feels that parents are some-times unaware of the dangers of smokingthese water pipes also known as oka pipes.

“In recent times the smoking of these pipeshas become popular among youth, and inmany cases parents have been ignoring it be-cause it seemed harmless,” he says.

“The popularity of water pipes may be duein part to perceptions that they are saferthan cigarettes. However, water pipe smokecontains nicotine, carbon monoxide, carcin-ogens and greater amounts of tar and heavymetals than cigarette smoke.

“Research has found that those youngadults who used water pipes were also morelikely to use cigarettes, marijuana, illicit

drugs and alcohol.“Experts have warned that smoking these

devices for one hour is as harmful as smok-ing up to 200 cigarettes in the same amountof time.”

Christians also pointed out that the pass-ing around of the pipe in a communal envi-ronment can also increase chances ofspreading illnesses such as tuberculosis.

Another alarming fact is that some par-ents are allowing their young children,sometimes as young as six years to smokefrom these pipes.

“Parents must be aware that these pipeshave the potential to lead to dependence onnicotine, and can cause cancer.

“Smoke from a single hookah session con-tains approximately 36 times the tar, 1,7times the nicotine, and 8,3 times the carbonmonoxide as that produced by one cigarette.

“With these facts facing them I just hopethat parents are aware,” he said.

The woman in her brass armoured bodystands tall and firm, armed with a spadein the one hand and a handbag in anoth-er, her steel stiletto heels steadfast on theground.

Nothing can move her. Her name, Society,a metal sculpture created by the skilledhands of artist Greg Birch, created to repre-sent women’s rights.

Greg, an artist from Penhill, Kuils Riverfeels strongly about the relevance of educat-ing women on their rights in this the periodof 16 Days of Activism against the abuse ofwomen and children.

The burning issue of women abuse in soci-ety has inspired this artist to use his talentsto draw attention to this destructive issue.A relaxed and free-thinking Greg shared hisvision in creating this unique sculpture.

“It always bugs me how you hear and see

how women are abused. It’s always on mymind, rape, abuse, lesbian discrimination,exploitation of women in the corporateworld.”

The idea for creating a sculpture to por-tray a woman was born from these thoughtsand Society started out with a bluegumstump Greg found while walking.

This local artist who makes about 80 per-cent of his artworks from recyclable wasteitems, says Society took a year to complete.

“The process takes a long time, a lot ofthought goes into it, everything has a mean-ing.”

Greg, a go-green activist explains a bit ofthe meaning behind the physical features ofSociety.

“Her 8mm high-heels made from rumbawood, is representative of women’s shoe fet-ish.

“The cellphone in her bag is that womenhave to stay connected, and how they haveevolved.

“She is even wearing a headset to high-light this connectivity and her ability tomultitask.

“You can also see our flag which showsthat every country has its own issues whenit comes to women and women’s rights.

“Her iron belt represents how women inthe world have to be muscular and tough tomake it, the cyberboard on which she standsis to give her speed.”

He also added LED lights to indicate theworld of advanced electronics that womenhave to function in in today’s society.

“Society also represents half human andhalf robotic. This is how we are all becom-ing; we in the fast modern world, unfortu-nate people who are not connected will slow-ly wither away over time.”

The message he wants people to get withSociety’s existence is: “Women make up so-ciety and we must respect them and cherishtheir femininity.”

Underprivileged children fromWesbank were treated to aChristmas meal on Saturday bya local Good Samaritan.

Magdalena De Bruyn has openedher heart and her door to the chil-dren of Wesbank, and this led to aChristmas lunch at the Church ofGod.

Twice a week Magdalena feeds upto 60 children out of her own pocket,giving them a meal which their par-ents cannot. These children comefrom homes where their parentsabuse drugs and alcohol, neglectingthem. Some parents are unem-ployed and cannot afford to look af-ter their families satisfactorily.

“Someone has to be there to lookafter them and I decided to do that.Now there is a bond between us.”

The idea to feed children came toher three years ago when she sawchildren on a Friday night just wan-dering aimlessly in the streets.

She then started making vetkoekand bought sweets and chips for thechildren and started dishing themout. She started a soup kitchen afterthe children she was feeding grewin numbers.

She approached Pick n Pay inHanover Park and asked if therewas any way they could assist her.Since then, she gets food which Pickn Pay cannot sell or is close to itsexpiry date. She then sorts out thefood, cooks it and dishes it out to thechildren.

Magdalena said she prefers towork with children than adults asshe did not have a good childhoodand would like to give these chil-dren what she did not have.

Known as Mamma to some, Sisterto others, the most captive namemust be that of “The Woman ofSteel”. So nicknamed after the pinswhich are driven into her leg tokeep her bones together. This hap-pened after a stray bullet penetrat-ed her leg during a shoot-out on 5June earlier this year, shatteringher bone. This has not slowed herdown as she continues to feed theneedy with the help of some otherchildren.

Holiday programmecomes to a party end

A party was held by the depart-ment of social development tosay thank you to the various par-ticipants that made a holidayprogramme possible for chil-dren in Blue Downs.

The function ended at the BlueDowns Sports Ground.

This programme was held foryouth living in Ward 11 and 17.

Some of the organisations thatparticipated in making this pro-gramme possible were the de-partment of sports and recrea-tion, Enough Is Enough, Kuil-sriver Youth Development andMalibu Recreation Forum.

During the holiday, childrenin the area were taken on threeexcursions; one of them was to

the Macassar Nature Reserve.All together, nine programmeswere done over the holiday.

According to Jerome Fitz fromEnough Is Enough, many topicswere discussed to the somewhat80 children who attended everyday. These ranged from basiclife skills, HIV/Aids and drugand substance abuse.

“We would like to implementrespect into kids by giving themaffection and motivation. We aretrying to give back to the com-munity,” Fitz said.

He thanked ward councillorsWilma Brady, Jacob Jacobs andBertus van Dalen, and JeremyLewis from Social developmentand early childhood develop-ment for making the programmeavailable to the children.

Megon Fitzgibbon’s dreams of stardomhave not crashed and burned after notmaking Die Son Model Search 2011.

It has instead given her an opportunity forher to branch out and get more media expo-sure.

Megon, 20, from Tuscany Glen en-tered the competition earlier thisyear after someone in her churchencouraged her to do so. This per-son bought Die Son regularly andbrought Megon an entry form. Thiswas not the first time she had beenencouraged to enter the competi-tion. The same person had encour-aged her to enter last year too.

Last year she felt intimidated tocompete against so many othergirls in the competition, says Meg-on, but this year she had a changeof heart and mustered the courageto enter.

Megon was notified in Octoberthat she had made it to the top 20.From this leg of the competition,readers had to SMS and vote fortheir favourite model. She then pro-gressed to the top 10, fiercely com-peting with girls all over CapeTown.

Since the competition, a quietMegon has received quite a bit of at-tention – both good and bad, accord-ing to her. She received random in-vitations on the chatroom forum,MXit and friend requests on the social net-work, Facebook, from people she did notknow. On the positive side, she has been in-vited to social events where she has receivedmore exposure.

A friend of Megon’s is a director and isplanning on doing a short film early nextyear. This has presented Megon with the op-

portunity of living out one of her dreams –acting. Jokingly she hinted to her friend toname one of the characters in the film afterher and so he did. He also gave her the optionof playing that character, which she accept-ed.

“I always saw my sisters doing drama andI wanted to do it too,” she said.

Even though this is Megon’s dream, her

parents would like her to have something tofall back on. Hence her application to studyfashion design at Northlink College.

Megon encourages everyone who has adream to do something great to pursue it.

“I had a lot of people being negative ... butI didn’t let that stop me. If you really wantto do something, you should do it,” she said.

Understandwhat ‘need’really isMy response to the letter by Michelle ti-tled “Give to those who need help” in Ty-gerBurger of 14 December:

Michelle’s thinking about giving to theneediest only applies to government serv-ices. If we see government assistance go-ing to those with some resources while thepoor are not helped, then I agree weshould protest. But if an individual or pri-vate company chooses to give a Christmaswish to a certain person, then we shouldrespect their decision. A gift is not earnednor is it a person’s right to receive. A giftcan be given to someone who has muchor who has little – that’s the beauty of agift. There is no means test for giving, andno gift-police to judge its validity.

If you apply Michelle’s logic to all gift-giving, then none of us may give to ourfriends before we have made sure that allthe more needy people have been givengifts first. Giving cannot, and never hasbeen, only to those who are worse off.Rather giving is all about the giver want-ing to bless someone else.

My second response to Michelle is thatI know that hearing the words “specialneeds child” doesn’t explain much. Ididn’t understand fully until my ownchild was born with special needs. I didn’tunderstand how frightening and over-whelming it can be. Nor how physicallytiring it can be with years of interruptedsleep. Nor how emotionally draining itcan be when specialists aren’t even surehow to help your child.

I didn’t know that therapies were so ex-pensive and are needed every week. Ididn’t know how demoralising it is toclean up vomit five times a day or to knowthat your child has thoughts but cannotexpress himself.

I don’t judge you for not understanding,because parents of children with specialneeds talk mostly about the triumphs -this is how we survive. I encourage youto spend a morning with the child whowas the recipient of the gift you wroteabout.

You’ll leave with a sense of having beenpart of something intensely difficult, butalso something precious, and may evenwish that you had some extra rands togive them too.

Move airshow away from pets, and usI live in the Milnerton area and each yearI watch helplessly as my dogs are affected bythe airshow. It is not only the weekend of theairshow, but also the days of practise priorto the event that I watch my dogs confusedand disorientated by the loud engines of thejets passing over. A dog’s hearing is muchmore sensitive than that of the human ear.

Aside from the obvious safety hazard of

having the airshow in a residential area – allthe animals in the surrounding areas takestrain. How is this any different from fire-works? Surely someone has the authority tomove the airshow outside of residential are-as? Or does this person not live nearbyenough to suffer the inconvenience?

Safety at city’s levelcrossings still lagsAccording to news reports, MEC Carlislesees the verdict against Mr Humphreys as “avictor for justice and road safety”. Well it’sall good and well for the MEC to be happyabout the verdict. Yes, we should be happyas a country that the NPA starts taking afirmer line against those who kill and maimon the roads and yes, Mr Humphreys was ir-responsible.

However, I am wondering when MEC Car-lisle is going to act on his responsibility andsee that the City Of Cape Town closes the lev-el crossings where many other people wereeither injured or killed. Shortly after the ac-cident on 25 August 2010 all newspapers cru-cified PRASA/Metrorail, and Lucky Mon-tana in particular, saying that there are notenough warning signs to make motoristsstop at these crossing.

To my surprise in August this year Mr Car-lisle very proudly informed members of thecommunity and the parents of some of thekids present at a memorial service, that theyplan on closing eight level crossings includ-ing the Buttskop one. In fact he did it on be-half of Mayor De Lille in her absence, as alleight crossings are in the boundaries of theCity of Cape Town.

What he did not tell people is that they aregetting pressure from PRASA as it is their

responsibility to ensure there is enough visi-ble warning signs at these crossings as theroads belong to the City of Cape Town.

I am asking myself how many more peopleare going to get killed, either through theirown irresponsibility or that of the irrespon-sible taxi drivers, before the City of CapeTown and Mr Carlisle are going to act.

The City failed these families when theyfailed to take steps earlier to close the cross-ing. The plans to close Fredericks Street andredirect traffic could have been done longago.

How come they have the money now? May-be next time someone gets killed or injuredat any of these level crossings Mr Carlisleand the mayor of Cape Town should be sued.Maybe they will start planning better.

I don’t even want to talk about the hun-dreds of commuters who were stranded thatday and either got to work or school late ordid not get to their destination at all due tothat accident ofAugust 25thandmanyothersbefore that.

Mr MEC now is the time for you to do theright thing and try and prevent more suchfatal incidents. You also have a responsibili-ty to ensure that we are safe on the roads.

Wannabe gets dirtyThe Afrikaans comedy Hoofmei-sie will be released by Ster-Kine-kor this Friday.

Hoofmeisie is a hilarious lookat the lives of a couple of primaryschool girls and their obsessedparents who are all vying forthem to become headgirl of Laer-skool Stumbo Pops.

The story centres on loveable12-year-old Nadia who decidesone day that she wants to be theschool’s headgirl. Thus, she setsabout putting together a list ofachievements that will help herreach her goal. She is very suc-cessful in her attempt at public

speaking, taking the trophy forbest speaker and begins todream that the headgirl blazer isalready on her back when disas-ter strikes.

Catastrophes follow, andwhen she becomes convincedthat her best friend Melissa issabotaging her efforts, Nadia de-cides to fight fire with fire. Offcome the gloves as the previous-ly positive and kind Nadia be-comes a self-centred mean girl towhom no trick is off limits.

Come ‘catch’ their EP at Rock the RiverLOUISA STEYL

Fresh off the stage at Synergy,Woodstock Mafia are gearing upto take on Rock the River. Notbad for a band that only playedtheir first gig in April this year.

The band is made up of Joe Ther-on on vocals, Nick van Rensburg onguitar, Ryan Matthews on bass andOwen Ingarfield on drums.

They have been playing togethersince January.

Ryan describes the band’s musicas “post grunge rock ’n roll” withinfluences from bands such as FooFighters and Incubus.

When they started playing to-gether, they did so with a goal, onethey have already achieved.

“Playing Synergy was a goal forthe band from the very beginning,”Ryan says.

Woodstock Mafia played the LMGstage and despite the heat, the band

enjoyed a good turnout and positiveresponses.

“We worked really hard to getthere,” Ryan says, adding that theyalso brought their own quirks to thestage, like a coolerbox filled withbeers that they threw out to the Syn-ergy crowd.

“When you have the opportunityto play a festival, people want to re-member you for something,” Ryansays.

He points out that festivals givethe band a lot of exposure in a shortspace of time.

As opposed to Synergy, Ryan saysRock the River will expose Wood-stock Mafia to a younger audience.

He says the band expected an old-er audience, but their fastest grow-ing fan base is between the ages of18 and 25.

He believes that for a young band,in terms of playing experience, ex-posure is extremely important.

Woodstock Mafia recently re-corded their EP, which is availableto buy at their gigs, but just likebeer, the band likes to throw theseout at their shows too.

“Come to the gig, you might catchone,” Ryan says.

The band hopes to release their

single early next year, before re-cording a music video.

“Doing a single is so importantfor a band,” Ryan says, adding: “It’san opportunity to capture an audi-ence before you tour.”

Woodstock Mafia is planning todo that in May, when they head to

Johannesburg and Pretoria.Eventually they hope to be up

there once every two to threemonths.

Ryansays festivals are also a real-ly good place to build strong work-ing relationships with other bands.

“The community is reallystrong,” he says.

“As a band we take our rehears-als very seriously,” Ryan pointsout. The band practises twice aweek.

They even got their name fromtheir rehearsal venue, in Wood-stock: “Owen chirped WoodstockMafia” and the name, which refersto a collective of people, stuck.

Ryan says each time they get onstage, they give it their all, and theypromise that Rock the River will beno different.

The US, who were champions of the 2007Junior Women’s World Championship, had atough match against Japan, but eventuallywon when – in the fifth inning – Cheyanne

Tarango hit a grandslam home run over thefence.

Japan kept composure and fought back butonly managed to score one run, which led tothe US being crowned champions again forthe fourth time.

It was not easy for the US in the play-offs,since they faced Japan on Friday and lost thegame, sending Japan straight to the final.

Japan was then the only undefeated team

and the only team to have beaten the US.The champions then had to face Chinese

Taipei on Saturday to stand a chance to bein the final, where they successfully beatChinese Taipei 12-3.

Chinese Taipei, who had also faced Aus-tralia in the play-offs on Friday, reduced theAussies to tears when they were defeated3-2, and in the end hopeful Chinese Taipeicame third in the tournament, winningbronze for the second time. The rest of theteams who all made play-offs were Canada,

Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and China.Apart from experiencing joy and disappoint-

ment, players found it difficult saying goodbyeas the tournament ended.

Many friendships were formed, and CapeTown proved yet again how well they can hostan international event.

The closing ceremony was done in style, andguests were once again entertained – just as inthe opening ceremony.

Limited Edition, a group of drummers,showed off their talents to the crowd, to stand-ing ovation.

Beng Choo Low, International Softball Fed-eration secretary general, thanked South Afri-cans and the people of Cape Town for their out-standing support.

He also praised Noore Nacerodien, head ofthe local organising committee, along with histeam for making the ISF ninth JWWC Under-19tournament a success.

The tournament was also described as oneof the best by many coaches, and Nacerodiensaid that Softball South Africa will be biddingfor the 2016 Senior World Championship.
