RAVENSMEAD/ELSIES RIVER: WEEKEND SUMMIT
Safe schools? How?GARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Safety in our schools will be placed un-der the spotlight this weekend with amajor summit taking place on Friday
and Saturday.Over the past few years, schools in Raven-
smead, Uitsig, Elsies River and Cravenbyhave experienced severe losses due to van-dalism and continued disruptions from ca-ble theft, gang activity and shootings.During 2013, Ravensmead Uitsig Craven-
by Development Initiative (RUCDI) a localdevelopment organisation, adopted school
safety as an advocacy issue and initiatedconsultations with provincial, local andcommunity stakeholders.Erica Jacobs of RUCDI explained that it
was decided that all efforts will be directedat hosting a community safety summit inlight of the on-going and pervasive violencein these communities. The summit will be held in consultation
with Metro North Education District andSafe Schools andwill be held at RavensmeadHigh School,
‘Voiceless in dealing with violence’“Friday is specifically geared at youth
leadership in schools,” says Jacobs. The purpose of the youth summit is to fo-
cus on the concerns and challenges youth ex-perience in their community.“The objectives are to create awareness of
risks, to inspire them to aspire for a positivefuture for themselves and to proudly take uppositions as role models in their communi-ty.”On Saturday, a community safety summit
will be open to all interested communitymembers, including youth who are not atschool.“DrHeinie Brandt and other speakerswill
set the tone for a day of presentations, delib-
erations and workshops.“Community members so often feel isolat-
ed, vulnerable and voiceless in dealing withviolence,” added Jacobs.“The purpose of the community safety
summit is to address the pervasive threat ofviolence, gangsterism and vandalism andthe risks to individual, school and communi-ty safety.“We want to create awareness; to enrol
participants as active citizens; to equip ac-tive citizens in proactively dealing withthreats to safety and to strengthen sustaina-ble mechanisms for ongoing action.”

Many learners are welcoming the ini-tiative and feel that the time for im-proving safety at schools and in theirneighbourhoods is long overdue.Speaking to a group of Grade 11
learners, they said that one of the pri-orities should be getting rid of gang el-ements in their schools.“There are learners who are in-
volved in gangs and all they do is cometo school to disrupt classes,” they said.“Many people seem to think that we
as youth do not want to succeed in ourlives but how can we learn with toomany disruptions?“That is when some of the children
just give up, with the attitude of ‘if wecan’t beat them join them.’“Our hope is that as youth we can
be part of making sure that there arechanges to the system to get rid ofthese bad elements from our classes.“Theywant to drag everybody down
with them.”Some of the schools participating in-

Lovely ladies: The Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville South heeded the call to getglamorous for Casual Day this year. Held on Friday 5 September, the campaign invited allfun-loving South Africans to dress differently up and raise awareness of persons withdisabilities. This year’s theme was Bring out the Bling and these ladies definitely had whatit takes. In front in the wheelchairs are, Shannon van de Heever and Nicole Darries, standing from left are, Chantel Abels, Vanessa Thomas, Diane Daniels, Rene Johannes,Roxanne Williams (a learner) and Jenny Ring.
With the cold wet winter coming to an end, reptiles such as snakes will soon be comingout of hibernation. “Snakes are an impor-tant natural part of our environment, hel-ping to control rodents and other disease-carrying pests,” says ShaunMacLeod, direc-tor of Reptile Education AwarenessConsultants (REAC).He explains what to do if you discover a
snake. “Most people are bitten when tryingto kill or handle a snake. As a general rule, snakes are just as frightened of you as possi-bly could be of them. Often they move asquickly as possible in the other direction.Snakes will only defend themselves if threa-
tened and will not attack anyone who leavesthem alone,” he says.“Do not attempt to capture or disturb it.
Leave it alone but keep an eye on where itis.”He says it is best to phone him so that the
animal can be safely relocated back into thewild.“If you keep your grass cut short, trees
well trimmed and clean up all your buildingrubble then there is less likelihood for sna-kes to reside on your property,” he suggests.V Contact Shaun, also the coordinator of the Wes-tern Cape Snake Emergency Rescue Volunteer Team,on 082 532 5033 or [email protected].

A campaign to promote medical male cir-cumcision (MMC)has been steppedup in theWestern Cape with the launch of twomobilesurgical theatres.MMC, which can be done in 30 minutes,
can protect men against HIV infection aswell as sexually transmitted infections.Themobile surgical theatres, about the si-
ze of an average bread truck, will travelthrough the Winelands, Overberg and Edenareas in the Western Cape, stopping off attowns, villages and communities along theway. They were launched by the SACTWUWorker Health Programme (SWHP) at acommunity soccer event at Stellenbosch re-cently.WHPhas partneredwith theWesternCape Health Department, as well as the Des-mond Tutu TB Centre (DTTC) at Stellen-bosch University’s Parow campus in hel-ping to roll out MMC at nine clinics in the
Winelands and in and around Cape Town.Research trials in South Africa, Kenya
and Uganda have shown that MMC reducesthe risk of contracting HIV by 60%. The go-vernment has set a target of medically cir-cumcising 4.3 million men in South Africaby 2016.Over 1.3 million men have been me-dically circumcised in South Africa sincethe government launched its MMC cam-paign in 2010. A cartoon character, CleverDick is the campaign’s ambassador. At thelaunch, men and women gathered at thesports ground in Stellenbosch to play five-a-side soccer.Menalso popped in to themobilesurgical theatres to be circumcised.“I’ve been wanting to do this for a long ti-
mebecause Iwant to lowermyrisk of gettingHIV and STDs. I’ve done it for my own he-alth, aswell as to protectmygirlfriend,” saida young man resting after his circumcision.

The Athlone School of the Blind in Bel-lville South may soon be able to pro-vide some tasty fruit platters to the
community. This is because they hosted some Arbor
Week celebrations lastweekwith help fromKirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.Roleen Ellman, Deputy Director: Biodi-
versity Education and Empowerment Di-rectorate of the South AfricanNational Bio-diversity Institute (SANBI) at Kirstenboschexplained that the project kicked off lastweek as part of their awareness-raising pro-gramme.“Having planted an indigenous garden at
the school for Mandela Day earlier thisyear, we extended our relationship with theschool to Arbor Week,” she said.“Every year, the Department of Agricul-
ture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) pro-vides trees to a large number of organisa-tions for Arbor Week. The trees planted yesterday were part of
the batch of trees we received from DAFF.“An earlier site visit to the school and dis-
cussions with the teachers led to 10 fruittrees and 10 indigenous trees being plant-ed.”Roleen also pointed out that the staff en-
joyed spending time with the learners.“The team from the Kirstenbosch Garden
included two staff members from our direc-torate as well as a number of staff memberswhowork directly in various sections of theGarden.”While the latter staff members work daily
with the propagation, planting and mainte-nance of plantswithin the garden, theyhavenever previously had the opportunity toplant within a community context.“All of them thoroughly enjoyed the expe-
rience which was made exceptionally spe-cial by the fact that, although the learnersare sight-impaired, they succeeded in plant-ing the trees.”–She added that in all circumstances edu-
cation and empowerment is central to theirwork.“We always teach the participants how to
plant correctly. The learners and teachers enthusiastical-
ly helped the Kirstenbosch Garden staffmembers when the first set of trees wereplanted and they were shown the correctmethod to plant trees. They then stepped back as the learners
and teachers planted the second batch oftrees – onlyproviding guidance as andwhenit was needed.“Each tree was labelled by one of the
teachers as belonging to the group of learn-ers who planted them.“Thiswas the start of theprocesswhereby
each group of learners will assume respon-sibility for the care of their trees.“We are hoping that the 10 orange trees
will grow quite quickly and allow the learn-ers to literally enjoy the fruits of their la-bour.The species of indigenous trees planted
are well suited to the conditions of the CapeFlats and should therefore grow well andeventually not only provide shade, but alsocontribute to the school’s green environ-ment.”

valhelms gesalueer.

The National Lotteries Board (NLB)would like to invite qualifying organisa-tions which support the development ofsports at grassroots level to apply for fund-ing, says Charlotte Thabang Mampane,CEO of the NLB.The scope of the funding programme is
in line with government policy to supportall sporting codes in South Africa. The NLB allocates a total close to R2 bil-
lion each financial year to various quali-fying organisations covering all three sec-tors including charities, arts and cultureorganisations and sporting entities.“We would like to take this opportunity
to encourage all interested schools andclubs to forward their application to the
NLB as early as possible,” saysMampane.“We would also like to reiterate the fact
that annually the NLB receives requestsfor funding amounting to more than R70billion, a figure that is well in excess ofthe funds available for distribution.”The NLB will give preference to sports
clubs and no-fee schools (Quintile 1,2 and3) in poor, previously disadvantaged andrural communities that support capacitybuilding (training of coaches and techni-cal officials), universal access to facilitiesandprovision orupgrading of access facil-ities for people with disabilities.Applications forms are available at the
NLB head offices in Pretoria or online atwww.nlb.org.za.

City Traffic Services and Metro Police arre-sted 107 motorists for drunk driving this pastweekend, including a ‘record’ 26 arrests atone roadblock in Atlantis.
The City’s law enforcement agencies had abusy weekend, reeling in motorists who con-tinue to break the law and put lives at risk.Cops arrested 65 motorists at roadblocks inBishop Lavis, Goodwood and Atlantis. With26 arrests in the Atlantis operation alone, thiswas the highest number of arrests in a singleoperation. Two more motorists were arrestedfor reckless and negligent driving after try-ing to evade the roadblock. One of them was
caught with the help of local residents, whopointed out the suspect’s location to officersat a block of flats after a high-speed chase thatsaw the offender crashing into the pavement.
“It is clear that even the prospect of arrestis not enough of a deterrent to the thousandsof people who still think it is acceptable todrink and drive.
“I hope that the harsher measures we’veproposed for the revised Provincial RoadTraffic Act, like impounding vehicles, willhelp change people’s attitudes,” the City’sMayco member for Safety and Security, JPSmith, said.

Lcal Idol, Jody Williams will be teamingup with Durbanville film company, Im-agenheart, to challenge the way we
view senior citizens.Through her newest music video for the
song “Like no Tomorrow” this lady fromSummer Greens will be raising awarenessabout the active aging campaign surround-ing Imagenheart’s film, Anderkant dieStilte.
The film will be released locally in No-vember has already won awards at interna-tional and local film festivals. It tells the sto-ry of a group of senior citizens who realisethat there is still life after retirement.
“The film was made to help people,” ex-plains director and writer, Desmond Den-ton. He was initially inspired by Dr MarioDenton’s research on the value of the team, which emphasises how each person mustfind their niche in society.
“It was made to get people excited aboutlife and get people connecting with theirgrandparents,” Desmond says of the film.
With this in mind, Jody and Imagenhearthave created the ultimate bucket list expe-rience. The video will tell the story of an eld-erly couple who escape from an old agehome and go on an adventure. The high-light is that a local couple will be chosento live the experience for real, for the dura-tion of the shoot.
The production team have turned to thecrowd-sourcing site, Indiegogo to raisefunds for the video, but more importantly,to reach out to older communities. Thefunds raised by the Indigogo campaign willhelp Imagenheart set up screenings inchurches and community venues and tomake a special screening kit available with
the DVD. A R30 donation will get you a spe-cial shout-out or thank you on Facebookwhich can also be used to nominate some-one over the age of 60 (by submitting a photoand a short motivation) which will be fea-tured in the video.
“They are going to pretty much be pam-pered,” Desmond says of the lucky coupleto be chosen.
A R150 donation will give you the oppor-tunity to ask Jody a question, which shewill then answer on video, along with a spe-cial thank you on Facebook or a pre-or-dered copy of the Anderkant die StilteDVD.There is also a VIP option for a dona-tion of R1500 or R3000, which includes Jodyperforming two songs at an event, or R5000for a producer credit.V Visit www.indiegogo.com/projects/like-no-to-morrow. The search is on to find the talent of Bel-lville South and surrounding suburbs. On Saturday 4 October, two community
organisations will be hosting an arts andculture festival and they want more inter-ested parties to join them in their quest tofind the best.Sustainable Upliftment and Development
(SUD), in collaboration with the BellvilleSouth Community Police Forum (CPF), isplanning this festival.“The aims of this festival is to explore and
discover existing and potential talent,” saysDavid Sias, chairperson of the CPF.“We want to provide valuable exposure
through arts and crafts, exhibitions andstage performances; offer artists the oppor-tunity to interact culturally and sociallywith other artists and the public as well ascreate an opportunity for artists to markettheir talents and skills.“At the same time, we aim to offer jobs
and economic opportunities to address seri-ous unemployment in the various neigh-bourhoods.”Both organisations plan to invite and re-
cruit various artists in the community byoffering them the opportunity to boldlypresent or perform their various art forms.A variety of works of art, handicrafts and
stageperformanceswill thereforebeaccom-modated and presented.“Artists of the visual, creative and per-
forming arts in the Bellville South area areinvited to register for the festival to redis-cover their talents and give them wings!”added Sias.He believes that the festival will serve as
a pilot project to take the discovery and pro-motion of local artistic talent to even great-er heights so that it could become the bigevent of the year for Bellville South everyyear. The SUD is currently busy recruiting and
selecting potential actors, stage managers, sound engineers, designers, seamstressesand artisans from the community for train-ing according to set standards.“This festival and its noble aims and ob-
jectives could never be realised without thesupport of organisations and institutions inBellville South,” says Sias.“We therefore invite a representative
from each organisation to a meeting at theBellville South SAPS Station tomorrow (11September) at 18:30.”

Estate and rental agents arefinding it increasingly hard toplace people in townhousecomplexes as a result of thenew no pets allowed ruling. However, this rule does notalways fall under the rules ofthe complex, but is one whichhas been included in houserules by the Home OwnersCommittee. One can accept that cats are
– or can be – a problem, as youcannot keep them confined toyour property and they canbecome a nuisance to neigh-bours when they enter theirhomes through a window, stealfood, spraying or fighting. Yetsmall dogs, where the tenant isat home most of the day, rarelycauses a problem except forthe occasional bark. Is that notwhat they are there for – as anextra alarm?Again, one can understand
when a pet is left at homealone all day and is lockedoutside, that it will barkconstantly. As a call to thehomes owners committees, could these hard and fast nopet rules not be amended toinclude small dogs – the heightcan be specified – where thereis someone home most of theday? Come on everyone, ouranimals are what make thislife worth living – let’s bemore lenient towards otherswho are animal lovers.

As a warning to all beach-goersand dog owners, please be onthe lookout for a wild, extreme-ly dangerous, unleashed anduncontrollable Rottweiler. Thisanimal attacked my wife andour two little dogs on Saturday23 August. Neither of our dogsprovoked or gave reason forthis dog to attack them.
Watch out forvicious Rottweiler
Regrettably, our 3.7kg Maltesepoodle Sally, was attacked, bitten and shaken like a ragdoll. She died two hours lateron the veterinary surgeon’stable. Both of our dogs were secure-
ly leashed. Sally was thesmallest dog on the beach at thetime. My wife was bitten tryingto separate the dogs. Oursecond dog was also bitten onher back leg during the attack.Besides the devastating loss ofour little Sally, there are theunnecessary financial costs forvet bills amounting to close toR7000.The owner of the vicious dog
is a slim young woman in hermid-20s with a young boy ofabout three. She tried to give mywife her details, but neither ofthem had a pen or paper andour main concern was gettingSally to the vet.Besides warning other
beach-goers, I want the ownerto know the consequence of herirresponsible action of bringingthis unleashed animal into apublic space.

Speedsters came under the spotlight whenmore than 1000 fines were issued duringoperations by provincial traffic authoritiesover the weekend. The highest speed recorded during a pro-
vincial traffic operation this weekend, wasrecorded in Brackenfell.Al-Ameen Kafaar, spokesperson for the
Western Cape Department of Transportand Public Works, says a driver travelling186 km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 inBrackenfell, was pulled over by provincialtraffic services during a weekend trafficoperation.“This was one of 1210 speeding offences
recorded province wide, during which 13112 vehicles were screened for speeding,”he says.Eight fatalities were reported overthe weekend, three of which were in thenorthern suburbs. In Bellville one person died in a vehicle
accident and in Milnerton two pedestrianswere killed,” says Kafaar.Furthermore, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks
across theWestern Cape saw a total of 2 643vehicles stopped as part of a ProvincialTraffic services safety campaign.“A total of 1 361 driverswere screened for
being under suspicion of driving under theinfluence of alcohol resulting in 24 arrests, while 261 fines were issued for various traf-fic violations ranging from driver to vehi-cle fitness to the amount of R357 900,” headds.

Cellphone users in theNorthern Sub-urbs can look forward to lightning-fast internet with amassive networkupgrade on the cards.Steven Barnwell, managing execu-
tive for Vodacom’s operations in theWesternCape, announced that aR600million upgrade for network invest-ment in the entireCapeMetro and ru-ral areas of the province will be im-plemented in the current financialyear.“The bulk of this amount will go to-
wards the network renewal and ex-panding our fibre optic network inthis region.“We’re also planning to increase
the number of 3G and LTE base sta-tions bymore than 50%, addingmorethan 280 new sites,” he said.“We’re also expanding our net-
work in the rural areas by adding 24new specialised 3G sites optimised tocover large areas. This means thatwe’re bringing faster data speeds totens of thousands of people who cur-rently only have Edge data services.”This upgrade will increase net-
work capacity and provide improvedvoice quality and enhanced mobiledata speeds across the city. With theexpansion of LTE sites in the city, smartphone users will also be able totake advantage of fast LTE downloadspeeds.“With LTE, video andmusic down-
loads can be accomplished in a frac-tion of the time of traditional 3G serv-ices,” he says. While speed is a key consideration
in this technology upgrade, addingcapacity is also a major focus. One ofVodacom’smajor strategic objectivesis to sustainably reduce the cost tocommunicate. Barnwell explains.“It would be simple to just reduce
call rates and data prices but thiswould be a disaster if rate reductionswere not supported by network in-vestment to cope with the increaseddemand. Vodacom’s strategy entailsinvesting billions of rands on the net-work to provide this additional ca-pacity and ensure we’re bringingdown the cost to communicate on asustainable basis, with increased vol-umes offsetting lower prices.”

Viwe Matolweniwas recentlyrecognised as thebest student atFalse Bay College.
Laying the bricks of successViwe Matolweni of Dunoon is not only amaster builder, but also the only femalebricklayer apprentice in the City of CapeTown sharing her skills with at theWestla-ke Campus of the False Bay College. The City has a group of 23 apprentices
participating in a bricklaying apprentice-ship at the college and the only woman inthe group has outshone her colleagues. She was recently recognised as the best
student at the college’s annual awards anddiploma ceremony. Viwe is a wife, motherand a bricklayer of note. She says she always wanted to be in con-
struction somehow.“I often looked at buildings and other con-
structions. I wondered how they did it andI knew it was what I wanted to do,” says Vi-we. Although it’s hardwork, she enjoys eve-ry moment of her job in the Transport divi-sion forCapeTownDirectorate, holdingherown with her male colleagues.“It can be very tiring but I have a suppor-
tive husband. Some evenings he takes overthe cooking and sees to our four-year-oldson. When people hear what I do, they tell
me it’s not a job for a woman. I’m provingthem wrong,” she laughs. The City’s mayoral committee member
for corporate services, Xanthea Limberg, said the City was living up to its strategicintent ofmakingCape Town an opportunitycity and providing work and learning op-portunities.“The City works hard to provide opportu-
nities to women, including our targeted ap-prenticeship and bursary programmes. Inthis way, we are making progress possiblefor our residents – together,” says Limberg. The City has awarded 953 bursaries to fe-
male staff members for 2014, totalling R1,5million. The apprentice programme provi-des direct job opportunities for people in theCity. It also provides successful graduateswith skills that are highly desirable in themarket place, should they choose to pursueother avenues of employment.“We’re especially proud ofwomen likeVi-
we who juggle several roles and are dedica-ted to each of them. They are an asset to theCity, their families and communities,” con-cludes Limberg.

By die HS Durbanville se Peter Buttner

baai, Maties, Ikeys, Hamilton enVic-toriane as die ses top-klubspanne indie WP in ’n uitklopkompetisie omdie Presidentbeker meeding.

WP REGIONAL KARTING CHAMPS: ON THE CREST OF A WAVE
Burnin’ up the track
You can expect the regular Max Challenge melee this weekend. PHOTO: MARK ZEEMAN
Western Cape karting is riding thecrest of a wave, with local racersstaying on top of the SA karting
championships. Two Cape lads clinched tickets to the Ro-
tax Max World Kart Finals in Spain laterthis year at lastweekend’sAfricanOpen rac-es in Gauteng. They will be racing at Killarney’s penulti-
mate seventh round of theWP regional kart-ing championship at Killarney this Satur-day, withmore than enough action expectedacross the board as the local championshipsnow start coming to a head. One of the Cape men to book his ticket to
the world finals this past weekend wasSAKRA TonyKart driver, 2012 SA Juniorand 2013 Max Challenge Champion EugeneDeneyssen, who will no doubt be out to con-tinue his winning ways despite a difficultseason so far.Eugene will have his work cut out for him
to stop reigning SA andWPRotaxMaxChal-lenge 125 champion LukeHerring (RKTKos-mic) from continuing his quest to repeatdouble titles and hopefully join Deneyssenin Spain.Don’t discount (IndyOil Birel), JonoAber-
dein (Tony) and Julian van der Watt (Zanar-di), all of whom had positive African Openoutings last week or Joshua Dolinschek
(Makita Kosmic) and Kohen Bam (SAKRAZanardi) from a mounting a Max ChallengeSurprise.Kohen Bam (SAKRA RKT Kosmic) also
booked himself a World Final ticket lastweek, but his WP championship is nowherenear done and dusted as his kid brotherHen-ry Bam (SAKRA RKT Kosmic) and arch-ri-
val DelanoFowler (SuprocomTonyKart) areall all embroiled in a WP Rotax Junior Maxtight title race.Expect the action to be just as fraught in
the Junior Max midfield the duelling DinoStermin (Designer Trims Zanardi), ChadleySwartz (SAKRARKTKosmic), Giordano Lu-pini (La Vie de Luc AutoWeek Zanardi), Isa-
belle Fowler (Supracom TonyKart) and Se-bastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic)are embroiled in an ever tighter tussle foran important fourthanddoubleWPMaxteri-no champion Dario Busi (AutomanTonyKart) intent to beat the lot of them. The primary school Maxterino 60s can be
guaranteed to deliver their regular thrillswith Africa Open runner-up Jason Coetzee(Zanardi) wanting to upstage triple-champi-onship leader JP Hamman (RKT Kosmic),Charl Visser (Battery Kosmic) and AidanStrydom (TurboTech TonyKart) and a fleetof Zanardis in the hands of Joseph Oelz,StormLanfear, Kai van Zyl, Tate Bishop andTyler Croy always ready to pick up the piec-esUpcountry visitors have spiced up the Ro-
tax DD2 gearbox class of late but local cham-pionship leader JonathanThomas (PartnersHair Zanardi) will be out to keep Zanardi ri-vals Stephen Wells and Luke van Rensburgbehind, while the dominant JohanHamman(Hammanshof Birel) will be set to continuein his unlikely quest to catch DD2 Masterstitle leader Jacques de Bruyn (Zanardi) andsecond man Vic Houdoul. So, the penultimate round of the WP kart-
ing championship should prove brilliantwith most class chases starting to come toa head at Killarney on this Saturday.
