Police doing their bestGARY VAN DYK

Policing needs and priorities came un-der the spotlight in Elsies River lastweek when the Bishop Lavis cluster

hosted a consultation process in the commu-nity.

Dan Plato, the MEC for Community Safetyin the province delivered the keynote ad-dress at the policing needs and priorities(PNP) meeting held at the civic centre. Hepointed out that engaging a wide range of in-terest groups about creating safer neigh-bourhoods is very important, but there isstill lots of work left to do.

“The latest figures provided to my officeshows that we still have very hard work todo,” he said. “On average, there are between45 and 55 murders occurring in the province

per week and about 95 rapes are reported perweek.” He also pointed out that the depart-ment recognises that crime is a multifacetedand complex phenomenon.

Working better, together“Different communities have different

safety concerns and needs. Interventions tocreate safe environments and communitiesin which crime is less likely to occur needsto take these differences into account.

“Meaningful partnerships are at the heartof the Department of Community Safety’sWhole-of-Society approach to increase safe-ty in our province.

“I am grateful that you have made use ofthis consultation process as an opportunityto have your say on your safety concerns.Through the PNP, the Western Cape govern-ment is committed to working better togeth-

er in the fight against crime.”Plato also pointed out that he realises that

safety concerns is an emotional issue butthat the police, metro police and law enforce-ment officers all work tirelessly under diffi-cult circumstances to provide the best serv-ice.

“In this cluster alone, the Department ofCommunity Safety’s oversight operationsshowed a remarkable shortfall of resourcesof up to 37% for some of the suburbs.

“These are the difficult circumstances un-der which our police officers have to oper-ate.

“This safe environment created here to-day to discuss the policing needs and priori-ties of your community must remain a safeenvironment where everyone can voicetheir concerns freely.

“I do however ask you to keep in mind that

we are all here to identify the problems and, through that process, try and work better to-gether to find better solutions.”

Another important role of the process ofthe PNPs, which are being held across theprovince, is to help the SAPS to maximisethe impact of increasing safety.

Deployment of resources“It is critically important that those limit-

ed resources are deployed in the areas wherethey are most needed and when they aremost needed,” he added.

“The PNPs will help improve police ac-countability and transparency.

“It will assist the Department of Commu-nity Safety to strengthen its role with the po-lice by measuring the efficiency and effec-tiveness of policing.”

“Furthermore, it would enable the CPFs toexercise their civilian oversight role by en-suring that the policing operational priori-ties are in line with the identified PNPs.”

Through looking at the findings fromlast year’s report, the different causes, mo-tivators and opportunities for crime in theprovince all pointed to substance abuse, unemployment and poverty.

“The same elements have also been iden-tified as the perceived motivators forcrime.

“Drugs and alcohol are wreaking havocon our communities and this is evident inthe Bishop Lavis PNP report as well.

“All of the police precincts in the BishopLavis police cluster identified substanceabuse as one of the top causes for crimesto be committed in this cluster.”

Plato also focused on the fact that manyof the social challenges cannot be ad-dressed through law enforcement alone.

“Active parenthood has innumerablefacets which no government can replicateor even enforce,” he emphasised.

Up to our parents“The parents’ role in being role models

for their children, guiding their childrenon paths steering clear from substanceabuse and drugs, and ensuring that theirchildren knows the difference betweenright and wrong; is all but one part of par-enthood.

“Parents need to raise the alarm and in-tervene when they start suspecting thattheir children might be getting involved ingang-related activities or drugs. We have

to prevent our children getting involved ingang related activities.”

In responding to complaints against thepolice, Plato said that there have been 27complaints registered since April last yearwith 19 having been finalised.

“Thepolicemust alwaysbeheld account-able and it is important for you as the com-munity that you give adequate feedback onthe policing service you receive.

“If you are unhappy about the service, you need to report it and if you are happywith the quality of the service, then youhave to reward our police officers.

“An easy way to do this is to SMS eitherthe word “Report” or “Reward” to 35395 orcall 021 483 4332.”

Feedback in the report also revealed thatneighbourhood watches and CPFs play an

integral part in ensuring effective safetyservice delivery.

“From the Department of CommunitySafety’s oversight visits to police stationsin this cluster, it is clear that there arefunctional relationships between the CPFand SAPS at all the stations,” said Plato.

“Community participation in the CPF atBishop Lavis and Elsies River seems to bequite good but the involvement from thecommunity in Langa is lacking.

“A lot more needs to happen from allrole-players as fresh problems are beingidentified and require attention.”

Looking to the future, Plato expects t thePNP consultation process to be an im-provement on last year’s but it will take thecombined efforts of all stakeholders in thecommunity.

While many may remember the effectof the Group Areas Act on the peopleof District Six there are still many

suburbs where similar stories can still to betold.

One of these stories will be taking sharedat Artscape theatre as part of the HeritageFestival from 18 to 30 September.

On Thursday, the festival will kick offwith an afternoon performance of Toe Ra-vensmead Nog Tiervlei Was.

This play is presented by The Tiervlei Cul-tural Arts Development Organisation andTygerburgerwas invited to oneof their rehe-arsals to get a feel of what it was all about.Watching some of the older participants inthe first act, one quickly realises that someof the action taking place in the play is stillvery close to their hearts.

The words of heartbreak about being mo-ved from their original homes are not justfrom a script - they lived it, or the generationthat lived it is very close to them.

Edwina Abrahams, one of the directorsand an administrator at the cultural organi-sation from Ravensmead, pointed out she isof the third generation of a family that suffe-red from this displacement.

“We always heard stories about living onthe ‘other’ side of the line,” she said. “So wedid a project where we went to interview se-niors about living there and we were encou-raged by a pastor to write a play to highlighttheir stories.

“The focus of this production is the Baad-jies family of Tiervlei/Parow, whose liveswere profoundly affected by the Group Are-as Act of 1950, which completely changed thecourse and the landscape of their future. “Italso gives us an insight to an area in theNorthern suburbs that had been grossly ne-glected in the course of our written and oral

history. We get some insights on how theydealt and responded to the changes and chal-lenges of this major and painful relocationto Tiervlei/Ravensmead.”

According to Marlene le Roux, the direc-tor of audience development and educationat Artscape: “Every one of us should beproud of our heritage, it is in the remembe-ring of our heritage that we gain a sense ofidentity and belonging.”

Abrahams pointed out that the TiervleiCultural Arts was established in 2006 and re-gistered as an NPO in 2010.

“Our vision is to enable our community, especially our youth and children, to under-stand, appreciate and nurture an everlas-ting passion for arts.

“We present training workshops in vari-ous art disciplines and in so doing facilita-ting nation-building by healing the hurt, pain and anger of the past through self-ex-pression.” The production will be runninguntil Saturday at the Artscape Arena withevening shows starting at 19:30.V Booking via Computicket or DialaSeat on 021 4217695.

Local singer Abby James wants to provethat there’s more to her than just her co-medic persona.

Abby is known to fans as “Koekie” afterthe release of her popular hit Koekiekoekeloekie. Premier Hellen Zille even usedthe song for the DA’s election campaign.

But Abby feels she still hasn’t found re-spect as an artist. “People only see me asthis local ‘koekie’,” she says.

She is confident that her new show willintroduce audiences to a whole other sideof her personality. Simply titled Abby vsKoekie, Abby will be performing the showat the Kleinvlei Civic Centre on Saturday20 September from 19:00.

“Everything started for me in Eerste Riv-er years ago,” Abby says, adding that shewants to give back to the people who firstsupportedherand thank themfor their con-tinued support.

Abby started her career singing in agroup called “A to Z”, but as she had a per-manent job and as the band got busier, shehad to choose between performing and herjob. “It was a good split, no hard feelings,”Abby says. She’s been performing as a soloartist since 2007 and knows the importanceof creating platforms for young, up andcoming performers. That’s why she hasopened Abby vs Koekie up to local perform-ers.

This is the third time she is performing

the show and every time she does, she inviteslocal acts to support her. For her show on Sat-urday, Abby will be joined on stage by theEerste River band, The Wave Band, rapper G-Kid and a dance group. “It’s a whole night ofentertainment from other artists as well,” shesays.

Abby has a repertoire of four albums towork from and she describes her music as abit of everything. While her lyrics are humor-ous, she points out that there is often a mes-sage behind it. Her new single, Japie, My Ska-pie, for example, is about not taking the wom-an in your life for granted.

Its all about “arbourism” this month asHope Cape Town recently distributed treesand vegetable seeds as part of their pro-gramme for Arbour Week.

Ten grape, orange, peach and fig trees aswell as a box of spinach, onion, cabbage andbeetroot seeds were distributed to variousprojects the organisation currently sup-ports.

These include the Hope Cape Town Com-munity Outreach Project in Blikkiesdorp, the Mannenberg Aftercare Centre and Emi-ly’s Play School and Joyce’s Soup Kitchenin Sir Lowry’s Pass.

According to the Donor Relations Manag-er of Hope Cape Town, Fahim Docrat thisexercise was all about empowering commu-

nities. “In keeping with the spirit of ArbourWeek, we distributed and helped plant vari-ous fruit trees and vegetable seeds that canhelp sustain efforts to feed people in variousimpoverished communities,” he said. Theprojects they support all have vegetable gar-dens which supply feeding schemes withfresh veggies. “It is an ongoing challenge toensure that we can feed the needy in thesecommunities and we call on the public tovisit some of our projects and help us tobring hope to others.” Hope Cape Town islocated at the medical school of the Univer-sity of Stellenbosch, Tygerberg Campus andis an NPO providing outreach, educationand counselling at community level, focus-ing on HIV/Aids and TB in the province.V To support Hope Cape Town, contact FahimDocrat on 021 938 9339 or email fahim@hopecapetown.com or visit www.hopecapetown.com.

Beneficiaries are finally filling up the units at Leo Mews, an awardwinning housing complex inLeonsdale. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Leo Mews getstennantsThe ongoing saga that has plagued the LeoMews complex in Leonsdale seems to becoming to an end with beneficiaries movinginto their new apartments.

The City of Cape Town is pleased with theprogress thathasbeenmadewith thealloca-tion of beneficiaries in this development inthe Elsies River area. To date, 46 of the 115available units have been allocated to bene-ficiaries. The repair work being done as aresult of vandalism is also on track.

Council approved the City’s acquisitionof the Leo Mews development, which con-sists of 125 completed units, in Elsies Riverfrom Standard Bank in January this year

The City hopes that all the units will beoccupied by the end of this year. Seven ofthe 46 units are already occupied by elderlytenants, while two units have been rentedto tenants with special needs.

City’s Mayco member for Human Settle-ments Siyabulela Mamkeli says: “We aretruly making progress possible, together.City officials, councillors and communityleaders are meeting twice a week to ensurethat Leo Mews will be one of our success sto-ries.”

The property was acquired as it holds

great potential for redress through the pro-vision of housing rental opportunities. Thedevelopment is of a very high standard, hasquality finishes, and 90 of the units arebrand new.

Standard Bank could not sell these unitsin as they intended to do, and the City there-fore acquired the property at a much lowerrate than what it actually costs to developthe property.

The City’s Housing Maintenance Depart-ment has been attending to the repairs ofsome of the units were vandalised while thebuilding was unoccupied.

It is hoped that the upgrade of the unitswill be completed by the end of this year.

The City has also put additional measuresin place to guard against vandalism whilethe repairs are being completed and the al-locations process is being finalised.

A private security firm and members ofthe City’ s Law Enforcement are currentlysecuring the property to prevent furthervandalism and burglaries of unoccupiedunits.

It should be noted that anyone who in-vades the building does so unlawfully andwill be dealt with forthwith.

It’s all coming together for the St Joseph’sHome (SJH) for Chronically Ill Children inMontana with the start of a massive renova-tion project.

On Wednesday 3 September the officialsod-turning ceremony marked the start ofa three year multi-million rand buildingand renovations project at the facility.

Described as a dream come true, DirectorThea Patterson said that the renovation ofthe Home took two years of intense plan-ning, working with a wide range of expertsdefining the scope of the project, refiningthe design of the upgrade and still keepingwithin budget.

The R36 million project has been madepossible through a generous overseas dona-tion and will take three years to complete. These renovations will consist of the mod-ernization of the existing five wards; the es-tablishment of a therapeutic hub and a fam-ily/visitors’ area; the upgrade of the nurseshome and the reception/admin area.

Provision is also made for the landscap-ing of the ward gardens and certain outsideareas.

“We were fortunate to have had excellentinput from architects, engineers, quantitysurveyors and consultants,” says Patter-son.

“After a year of preparatory work, therenovations have now officially started andwill be completed by 2016.

“We are confident that this will contrib-

ute considerably to the improvement of ourcurrent facilities which are nearly fiftyyears old!”

She added that SJH is ideally positionedto take on the new challenge of intermediatecare service, based on a proven record oflooking after children with life threateningconditions.

“This is also in line with the Home’s stra-tegic thrusts of remaining relevant and sus-tainable as a financially viable non-profitenterprise which will attract much neededfunding from donors and Governmentalike.”

The facility is a registered non-profit or-ganization and a unique in-patient facilityin the country that provides a wide rangeof paediatric, intermediate health care andrelated services.

This holistic approach includes amongothers, a rehabilitation project, a nursingschool, St Joseph’s RC Primary School, acreche and logistical and pastoral supportto families.

Children at SJH have all been diagnosedwith life threatening and life limiting ill-nesses and are mostly from disadvantagedcommunities.

Last year, more than 252 patients weretreated through intensive rehabilitationprogrammes at the Home.

Patients are mainly referred from statehospitals such as the Red Cross Children’s,Tygerberg and Groote Schuur Hospitals.V For more information about the facility contactAlrika Hefers, Resource Development Manager on021 934 0352 during office hours.

’n Sondagskool-klas.

Having a disability has never kept thisyoung woman from reaching for thestars.

Instead, Terniel Oppel (26) has been inspi-red to carve out a career for herself as a mo-del.

Terniel grew up in Kleinvlei near EersteRiver, and believes not being able to hearhas given her other strengths to draw from. For one, her beautiful smile has stood herin good stead – as this smile shone throughwhen she won Miss Western Cape 2014.

Terniel was selected from of a group of fi-ve as the overall winner. All the other con-testants are able to hear and being trium-phant is a huge feather in her cap, says Ter-niel. “They called my name. I could nothear. I looked around.

“They said it is you. I could not believeit. I began to cry. I was very happy.

“I cannot believe it because this wasagainst hearing people.”

The competition was held in Brackenfellon Saturday, 6 September.

Terniel, an aspiring teacher, said she ho-pes to enter more such competitions.

“Ever since I was little, I loved it,” Terniel

said using sign language. She loves model-ling, especially the glamourous photos andbeautiful clothes.

When asked what inspired her as a youngchild to choose modelling, she immediatelypoints to her teacher, Maria Siwertsen whoassisted TygerBurger with interpreting theinterview on Friday.

“Maria encouraged me to participate inthe Miss Deaf Western Cape competition, where I had my first success,” says Terniel.

Maria says: “Terniel has the natural abili-ty to model. We are very proud of her.”

Terniel also won Miss Deaf South Africaand came fourth in the Miss Deaf World Pa-geant in 2007 which was held in Prague.

Maria replied that she always believed inTerniel. She also helped her design and sewthe dress she wore on the big night of thepageant.

“The other girls all had fancy dresses. Ihad a normal dress.

“I did not think I would win because myclothes were not as pretty as theirs. Now Iunderstand that it is not important what thedress looks like, but the person inside, thatis important,” Terniel added.

She said the first part of the competitionwas somewhat difficult. “The interpreterhad to lip read. But I had a friend that hel-ped. It was fine,” she said.

Among the prizes she won was a getawayat a hotel, cosmetics, hair products and aMiss Western Cape 2014 certificate.

Terniel was born in Springbok in theNorthern Cape but grew up in Kleinvlei. She lost her ability to hear at the age of 18months due to contracting meningitis. Shejoined the Dominican School for the Deafnear Wynberg at the age of 4 years.

So far, Terniel has completed her studiesin beauty therapy and Computer Studies atthe National Institute for the Deaf in Worce-ster. In June she returned to the DominicanSchool in Wittebome where she is currentlyassisting with computer classes.

“In this way I can plough back into thecommunity, something I enjoy,” she says.

Although she plans to become a teacher, she also hopes to continue furthering hermodelling career and in so doing, raise awa-reness about being deaf.

Juanita Smith, organiser of the Miss Wes-tern Cape event said: “At Role Models SAwe believe that everyone can make a diffe-rence.”

A local choral enthusiast has worked himselfup the ranks at Cape Town Opera (CTO) bybeing recently appointed as the new CapeTown Opera Chorus Master.

Parow North’s Marvin Kernelle will takeover from Albert Horne, who took up a postat Hessisches Staatstheater in Wiesbaden,Germany.

Born in Bonteheuwel, Marvin grew up inBellair in Bellville. He started playing the or-gan when he was just 13, under the tutelageof well-known teacher Edwin Mullins. Akeen opera lover, he says: “There is some-thing about the complete musically immer-sive experience of an opera and choral musicthat neither needs, nor asks for excuses. Yougo to the opera, the music starts, and itdoesn’t let you go until the very end.”

Marvin auditioned for the CTO’s ChoralTraining Programme in December 2003 andwas accepted for the following year, whichwas perfect timing as this was the last yearof intake to the programme.

Under the guidance of Virginia Davids,Marvin studied towards a Performers Diplo-ma at the University of Cape Town’s OperaSchool from 2005 to 2007. In 2008 he joined theCTO’s Opera Chorus and went on to performin many of their productions in South Africaand overseas.

Marvin was a full-time chorus member andan assistant chorus conductor when CTOwon the International Chorus Award in Lon-don last year. He also stretched his legs asChorus Master when he worked with thechildren’s choir for Carmen (2010) and Otello(2013).

When Madama Butterfly was staged in Sep-tember last year, Marvin performed all theconducting.

But all that impressive experience hasn’tmade him immune to moments of mirth.

“We usually perform the Hallellujah med-ley at the end of our concerts,” says Marvin.

At a certain section, he keeps accidentallygiving the correct cue to the wrong voicegroup. “So,whenweperformthismedley, thechorus have developed a signature move thatshows me it’s not tenors’ but the mezzo-so-pranos’ turn!” he says. “I’m sure it will be re-ally funny when you see it live.”

Marvin explains that being a Chorus Mas-ter means conducting, planning and leadingthe vocal performances of the chorus. He alsoauditions and prepares the singers, ensuringthat the chorus “demonstrates the highestpossible level of artistic excellence.

Before being chosen as the new ChorusMaster, he was the project manager forCTO’s West Coast Choral Outreach Pro-gramme and although his new role won’t al-low him the time for outreach work, Marvinstill has ideas on how to get young childrenexcited about opera and choral music.

“Continually expose and educate from avery young age is key,” he says. “That’s whatgot me excited. I was exposed to choral musicand opera from an early age and those soundsare still ringing aloud.”

Now that he’s holding the reigns, Marvinsays he’d like to build on “already excellent”standard of the chorus.V Visit www.capetownopera.co.za for more on thecompany and shows.

TygerBurger’s digital editor recently gotmore than just her feet wet when the news-paper was nominated to take part in the#ALSIceBucketChallenge.

TygerBurger was nominated by PrestigeAcademy and Centurion Academy in Bell-ville on Wednesday, so Cecilia Hume tookone for the team the very next day.

The #ALSIceBucketChallenge is a globalinitiative aimed at promoting awarenessand generating funds for research for amyo-trophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease.

Participants are dared to film themselveshaving a bucket of iced water poured overtheir heads or forfeit by donating money toa local organisation that deals with ALS, amotor neurone disease (MND).

Although TygerBurger have taken thechallenge, the newspaper will also be ma-king a monetary donation to The South Af-rican Motor Neurone Disease Association.

ALS is a motor neuron disease (MND)where the motor neurons, made up of milli-ons of nervenuclei in thebrainstemand spi-ne, degenerate.

This causes muscle weakness and stif-fness as well as resistance to movement andchanges in reflexes.

It can also result in difficulty speaking, swallowing, and breathing.

Most people with MND are over the ageof 50, but it can also affect people in their20s or 30s.

It usually presents itself in different waysdepending on the groups of muscle fibresthat start degenerating, but once diagnosed;patients usually have a life expectancy ofone to five years.

Although research is ongoing, there isstill no cure for MND, only treatments tohelp with symptoms.

TygerBurger nominated Radio Tyger-berg, Tyger Valley and CapeGate shoppingcentres to take up the challenge.

So brace yourself and support this worthycause!V Visit www.mnda.org.za for more information onMotor Neuron Disease and how you can help.V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to see TygerBurger’s#ALSIceBucketChallenge.

One often reads and hearsabout motorcyclists’ involve-ment in road accidents – moreoften than not, the cause of theaccident is placed at the feet ofthe other road user.

While sitting in peak hourtraffic on a national road lastweek, I was really annoyed atthe number of bikers zig-zag-ging their way through thegridlocked traffic.

With my senses on highalert, I noticed most motorcy-clists would either speed pastvehicles in the gap betweenlanes, or manoeuvre their waythrough the traffic to get to thefront. They also seem to forcetheir way into turning lanes atrobots or stop-streets, withlittle or no regard for othermotorists.

Understandably, their chosenmode of transport allows themto skip the traffic which we, togreat frustration have toendure. A little respect whilemeandering through vehicleswould be appreciated.

Historic imagery are inter-woven with modern con-cepts in Rehane Abra-

hams’ What the Water Gave Me.Directed by Table View’s Jade

Bowers, this moving producti-on will be on stage at Cape TownCity Hall from Thursday 25 toSunday 28 September as part ofthe Cape Town Fringe Festival.

Rehane, who grew up in Re-treat, was inspired by her tra-vels abroad to create What theWater Gave Me.

It all startedwhenshewas lea-ving San Francisco in Americain 1997, when a friend gave hera book on Navajo sandpaintingwhich captured her imaginati-on.

A sense of tribal lossThe paintings are used for he-

aling during ceremonies andRehane says she had always hadan interested in the “ritual na-ture of performance and how asa rite of passage, theatre heldthe potential to transform”.

Needing some healing her-self, shedecided touse theNava-jo concept to draw a map of whe-re she had been and where shewas going. This she then laidthat over a medicine wheel de-picted through the sandpain-tings. The experience turned in-to a “medicine play” where thestage became an extension ofthe sand painting.

After some time back in CapeTown, Rehane travelled to En-gland where she pulled out themap and started researching aplay. Her research let her to rea-lise that she was partly ailed bya sense of tribal loss. “I was bornafter the Group Areas Act hadforced my father’s family fromthe homestead where they’d li-ved since the 1700s inClaremontto Wetton,” Rehane explains.

“There was always an unspo-ken sadness around ‘home’ inthe family and I suffered a senseof homelessness/rootlessness,as though my roots were in shif-ting water not soil.”

The geography of the imagination

Rehane would often ask hergrandmother where they werefrom and recalled these bedtimestories while working on theplay. Back in Cape Town, Reha-ne and her friend, Sara Mat-chett started The MothertongueProject, a collective of femaleperformance artists interestedin exploring the sacred in andthrough performance. They fo-cus on transformation and hea-

ling in their work to empoweraudiences. “Sara and I decidedto start it to attempt to addressthe issues around violenceagainst girls and women thatthe play explores,” she ex-plains.“From there Sara expa-nded it to affect the lives of hun-dreds of young women.”

InterwovenThe play was first staged, un-

der the direction of Sara, at Ca-pe Town Theatre Laboratory’sCollaborations Festival in No-vember 2000 and then at theBaxter in July 2001.

But that wasn’t the end of thestory. Rehane travelled back toEngland and from there to Am-sterdam, Central Java, Lombok,Bali, Borneo and Sulawesi, de-veloping the play along the way.

What theWaterGaveMe featu-res four different characterswhose different stories are in-terwoven.

“They each represent a direc-tion or an element,” Rehane ex-plains. “They are aspects of thesame story or same person ifyou will. The story binds them.”Cherae Halley brings the cha-racters to life under the directi-on of Jade.It is also significantthat the play is being performedin Cape Town, where it waswritten. “The play is a sort of apsycho- geography where thegeography of the city becomesmerged with a geography of theimagination and these mergewith the geography of the story-teller’s body,” says Rehane.“Ina way our bodies are a productof the land we walk on, our bo-dies remember all the placesthat shape us to the people whotouched and continue to touchus.”V The Cape Town Fringe Festival runsfrom Thursday 25 September untilSunday 5 October.

we seisoen.

Multicultural theatre, music, dance and po-etry productions are set to engage audiencesin a celebration of the country’s rich herit-age at Artscape Theatre.

The Artscape Heritage Festival, whichruns from Thursday 18 to Tuesday 30 Sep-tember,will reflect onSouthAfrica’s historyand struggle for freedom.

In this month, South Africans are encour-aged to engage with the past, particularly onnational Heritage Day on Wednesday 24 Sep-tember.

The headliner shows – Unmute, They DiedSinging, Biko’s Quest and Rainbow Scars –are programmed as a double bill at the Art-scapeTheatre.A 30-minute interval betweenthe two productions will feature live enter-tainment.

Unmute and They Died Singing run back-to-back from Wedensday 24 to Saturday 27September.

Unmute, choreographedbyAndileVellem,is a dance piece based on this dancer’s expe-rience as a dancer who is deaf. It is a wayfor Vellem to find his voice as a choreogra-pher, using sign language as the source ofthe movement vocabulary. It features per-formers with different dance backgroundsto find and explore what they would like tounmute: feelings, perceptions, social norms,

expectations and deconstructing what socie-ty perceives as dance.

They Died Singing is a musical productionbased on the life of Vuyisile Mini, who wasa unionist, Umkhonto we Sizwe activist, singer, dancer and poet.

It highlights his journey in the unionmovement, detentions at the hands of theapartheid regime to his last day when he wasexecuted alongside Zinakile Mkhaba andWilson Khayinga on 6 November 1964.

Rainbow Scars and Biko’s Quest run back-to-back on Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 Sep-tember, before they leave for the AfrovibeFestival in Amsterdam in October.

Set in present-day SA, Rainbow Scars cele-brates 20 years of democracy and exploresissues of identity, exclusion and privilege.

Biko’s Quest explores the life and ideas ofthe young anti-apartheid activist Steve Bikowho inspired many people and continues todo so.

Biko’s ideas and writings on Black Con-sciousness empowered people with a newsense of self-worth, self-motivation and anattitude of activism.

The story is narrated and performedthrough song, dance, dialogue and multi-me-dia.

The Arena Theatre will also host commu-

nity theatre performances, Toe RavensmeadNog Tiervlei Was and Lingua Franca, inpartnership with community-based arts or-ganisations, from Thursday 18 September.

Toe Ravensmead Nog Tiervlei Was tells thestory of a family forcefully removed fromTiervlei, now known as Ravensmead, and isbased on a factual forced removal that hap-pened in 1958 in the area which has subse-quently been subdivided into Parow Valley

and Ravensmead in accordance with theGroup Areas Act 41 of 1950.

Lingua Franca is an exploration of inher-itance through poetry featuring a leadingspoken word movement and a musical base.

V Tickets for the Artscape Heritage Festival are available from Computicket or DialASeat on 021 4217695. Tickets per double bill cost R100. Visitwww.artscape.co.za for more information.

NEWLANDS: SCHOOL FOUNDED ON HALLOWED GROUND

Nurturingtalent atcricket schoolBy January next year, one of the most

famous and picturesque cricketgrounds in the world will become

home to a high school. The Western Province Cricket Associa-

tion (WPCA), in partnership with Stone-fountain Colleges, announced the opening ofNewlands Cricket High School last week.

Shaheed Shaik, the founder and directorof the new school, says the school will broad-en the scope for talented cricket players toshine, so that more players of value can pro-ceed through the local cricketing system.“There are currently four very prominentcricket schools in town, but disadvantagedplayers cannot afford to attend theseschools,” he says.

“The objective of the new school’s man-agement team is to arrange scholarships fornine players from disadvantaged back-grounds, thus ensuring thatmoney isnot themost important criteria when decidingwhich players will be accepted at the topcricket institutions.”

The school will be following the provincialeducationdepartment’s curriculumandwillbe accepting Grade 8 and Grade 9 pupils fornext year. In this way, the school will growby a grade every year.

“After five years, the school should haveat least 45 well-developed disadvantagedplayers vying for provincial selection onmerit, rather than opting for the very unpop-ular quota system,” says Shaik.

Balancing cricket and academicsThe school will have a fully-fledged aca-

demic programme, but will fit the develop-ment of cricket skills into the daily pro-gramme. According to the WPCA website, the school will be housed in the CenturyClub on the third floor at the southern endof the field. It will also use the facilities ofWestern Province Cricket Club, a mere

stone’s throw away from the stadium. “Ap-plicants will be assessed in terms of theircricketing ability by coaches on the school’sstaff and only those players with an aboveaverage ability to play cricket will be accept-ed. Players who show real potential but whohave fully not developed, will also be consid-ered,” reads the statement.

Passionate about the game“Teaching staff will be registered with the

South African Council of Educators, whilecricket coaches will be at least Level Twocompliant coaches. The school’s core activi-ty will be cricket development and playerswill be exposed to the best possible pro-grammes, workshops and practice ses-sions.”

The pupils will also will be exposed tomany forms of cricket and will play matchesin the WPCA schools and clubs competition. They will also tour around the country andhost touring teams from around the world.

“Players will not lose out on school work,as teachers will be touring with the players, ensuring that the academic programme con-tinues,” Shaik says.

WPCA general manager Nabeal Dienpraises Shaik for his “forward thinking” interms of cricket development and education.“He is passionate about education and morepassionate about the game of cricket,” Diensays.

“It is my contention that with his vast ex-perience and passion for education andcricket, this initiative will provide a naturalfit for ensuring a successful cricket school.

“The WPCA is excited about this initiativeand its implementation, as we have alwayssubscribed to these values of education, ac-cess and opportunity.”V Anyone interested in joining the school can phone(021) 696 3612 or SMS 084 586 9488. For more information visit www.newlandscricket.co.za.

Durbies kry nou vrypasSAREL BURGER
