DESPAIR:MANWAITS OVERNIGHT TO BE IN FRONT

    A

    Cape Town pensioner diedwhilewait-

ing in line at a Sassa service point in

    Kraaifontein last Wednesday morn-

    ing.

    Willem Jaars (63), alongwith hiswife,Ma-

grieta, had just spent the night outside the

Scottsdene Youth Centre in order to get a

front row position in the hall the next morn-

    ing, sayshisheartbroken sister, SarieDavis,

    from Phoenix.

The doors had just opened and they both

scurried in to get a chair in the front.

Minutes later he died in this very chair.

    First time applicant

Hehad just eaten apiece of bread and tak-

en a sip of the coffee they had brought with

them, before he slowly slumped down next

    to her.

His wife called out to him in vain.

White foam appeared around his mouth,

but he was dead, says Davis.

According to her, her brother was a first-

    time pension applicant.

Everybody in the area visits this office to

apply for government grants and the lines

are unbelievably long. It is always jam-

packed and often scores of people are sent

home when the day comes to an end before

they can reach the front of the line. There

is just not enough staff to help everybody.

Davis believes this is what prompted the

elderly couple to spend the night outside the

    office.

He was declared dead when the Kraaifon-

tein police arrived at the Youth Centre.

When I got there later that morning, the

hall was still crowded. My brothers body

was carried to the adjacent kitchen where

it was neatly covered with a sheet.

According to his wife he made no com-

plaints of pain or discomfort during the

night. It came as such a shock to her and she

    is devastated.

    Action needed

A post mortem was performed, of which

the family is awaiting the results.

Ward councillor Grant Twigg was in-

formed of the incident shortly afterwards.

People come as early as possible to be

helped and the problem persists from week

to week. Something will have to be done,

    he said.

    According to Shivani Wahab, spokesper-

son forSassa in theWesternCape region this

service point, which is linked to the Eerste

River office, is opened once aweekwhere ap-

    proximately 200 clients are served.

There is often a high influx of clients and

in turn, a high demand for services, at this

point, she said in a statement to TygerBur-

    ger on Monday.

All screening and applications for social

grants are done in line with the Sassa stan-

    dardised business processes,meaning a one-

    day turnaround.

    All clients are assisted

All clients who access Sassa contact

points for services are assisted on the day

and it is not necessary for any client to have

to sleep over at any Sassa contact point in

    order to access services.

    I

t is how you view a student that

makes the difference in terms of

what they can do, notwhat they cant

do, said Professor Jonathan Jansen, vice-

chancellor and rector of the University of

the Free State, in his keynote address at the

    Rachels Angels Trust Youth Mentorship

    Symposium last week.

Held at the Stellenbosch Institute for Ad-

    vanced Study, the symposiumwas attended

by relevant role players, which included

university staff and school principals from

    Kraaifontein schoolswho formedpart of the

    Rachels Angels mentorship programme.

A Media24 initiative, the programme is

aimed at Grade 11 and 12 learners at Berna-

dino Heights and Eben Dnges high schools

to enable them to improve their academic

ability and life skills to ease the transition

from school to university. This was also the

    main theme of the day.

Speaking on the topic, Jansen, renowned

as a leading voice in higher education, iden-

tified the primary problem in the South Af-

    rican school system.

    Teacher expectation is lower than

learner ability. Thus, a childs intellectual

ability will remain relevant as long as the

teachers expectation of that child remains

low. Research has proven it over and over

when you make a kid feel dumb he will

live up to that expectation, he said.

Jansen is of the opinion that effective

mentorship is the keywhen transitioning to

    university.

For mentorship to be effective, a holistic

approach need to be followed tomeet the in-

    tellectual, emotional and physical well-be-

ing of young people, he said.

He shared critical lessons about mento-

ring young people within the South African

context. For Jansen, it is vital that we, as

a nation, increase our ability to recognise

the potential that all young people have.

Wifred Taylor, principal of Eben Dnges

    High School in Kraaifontein, agreed.

We do not easily see the potential of all

our youth. Often we have judgmental atti-

tudes based on our personal racial growth

path. Some people need to be treated differ-

ently because of their unique challenges

    and barriers.

The ten panellists in two sessions repre-

sented a range of educational institutions

and shared best practices and knowledge in

    effective mentoring.

    Mentoring creates a caring environment

and space for us to move forward as a na-

tion, said Dr Vincent Bosman, and educa-

tion and ethics specialist from theCapePen-

    insula University of Technology.

    Professor Charl Cilliers, retired director

of Stellenbosch Universitys Centre for Stu-

    dent Counselling and Development said

mentorships should be embedded in schools

where teachers should be coached to act as

    mentors.

    Just as with leadership, mentorship

starts with oneself, said Adri Marais, co-

founder and chief executive officer of TSi-

    BA.

She said at TSiBA mentors are seen as

    travelling partners.

If you want to walk fast, walk alone; if

you want to go far, walk together, ex-

    plained Marais.

The power of the mentor needs to be un-

derstood it can make or break the mentee.

    Not everyone canbecomeamentor especial-

ly when dealing with vulnerable adoles-

cents. This was the caveat of ELouise Botes

    whorecently completedherMasters degree

    in industrial psychology at Stellenbosch

    University.

Her thesis focused on the development of

a youth mentor competency model and the

skillset required by youth mentors within

    Rachels Angelss mentorship programme.

Gloria Noemdoe, one of the educators at

Steenberg High School who attended the

presentation, said the panel was so inspir-

ing and showed us that we all speak the

same languagewhen it comes to thewell-be-

ing of our children and society.

In her concluding remarks, Prof Rachel

Jafta, chairperson of the Rachels Angels

Trust, encouraged all the stakeholders to

keep moving forward and think of practical

ways to reach out to more young people.

Share the knowledge you have gained

from this symposium and also celebrate

small victories along the way, she urged.

. The Rachels Angels Trust was estab-

    lished in 2006whenRachel Jafta, economics

    professor at Stellenbosch University; Koos

Bekker, managing director of Naspers; and

the late Professor Jakes Gerwel, formulated

the concept for mentorship to learners of

    previously disadvantaged communities in

    the Western Cape.

According to the clients spouse, he

was unwell during the course of the

    week, she said.

Sassa says clients who are unwell

need not access a Sassa contact point

A home visit can be scheduled at

the nearest contact point, where Sas-

sa will ensure that the request for the

home visit is honoured and the social

grant application can be conducted at

    the clients home.

Sassa will keep on monitoring the

service point to make sure that no

    sleepover occurs andwill make avail-

    able additional staff andanadditional

hile the Study Xpress tutor centre

found to be illegally operating as

a school is lashing back at the

    Western Cape Education Department

(WCED), three distressed parents laid char-

ges of fraud at the Durbanville Police Sta-

    tion last Thursday evening.

Study Xpress is refuting the findings of

the investigation conducted by the WCED

that the centre is illegally being run as a

    school.

The centre had about 80 children from

    Grade R to matric.

It is not knownhowmanyof these are still

there as several parents took their children

out of the centre and many teachers re-

    signed since January.

The centre makes use of the private Im-

pak curriculum and is accredited as an Im-

    pak centre.

The cost for a Grade 10 learner is around

    R3200 per month.

After an on-site inspection on Monday 14

March, the department found that Study

Xpress, which is only allowed to assist chil-

dren home-schooled full-time by their par-

ents, is illegally presenting full-time school-

    ing to the children.

    Fraud charges

The department instructed that all learn-

ing and teaching activities at the Study

Xpress tutor centre should cease at the lat-

est by Saturday 30 April as the school was

not registered as an independent school

    with the provincial education department

and first had to register as such.

They can then only resume classes from

    January next year.

    Three parents Natasha Rheeders, who

also worked as a facilitator or teacher at

the tutor centre, Ren Herbst and Soritha

Lombard laid charges of fraud against the

centre as they claim Study Xpress falsely

led them to believe that their children will

be properly schooled andoffered thema ser-

    vice that was not delivered.

They are also claiming back the money

they have already paid to the centre al-

    most R60 000.

The tutor centre on the corner ofWelling-

ton Road and De Villiers Avenue has come

under fire after some parents took their

children out due to poor performance.

    Sub judice

Amother also toldTygerBurger that a 20-

year-old facilitator told a class of Grade 3

children not to abuse alcohol as she was

dancing on a table once, under the influ-

ence, fell off the table and broke an ankle.

This is not the sort of stories you want

a teacher to tell your Grade 3 child, the

    mother said to TygerBurger.

In an email to these distressed parents, a

departmental official stated that the depart-

    mentwas contactedbyStudyXpresss attor-

ney and that he had met with the State law

advisor, who had been tasked to formulate

    a response to the lawyer.

He said as the matter was sub judice, he

was not in a position to elaborate further.

I shall, however, inform you once the

State law advisor responds to Study

    Xpresss attorney.

In amemorandum regarding the legal po-

sition of academic centres by Van der Mer-

we Attorneys to parents of Study Xpress,

which was also forwarded to TygerBurger,

it was stated that such centres do not need

to register with the education department

as a school as the centre is not rendering

    official education.

Van der Merwe Attorneys also wrote in

a letter to parents that Study Xpress con-

forms to the provisions stipulated in the

memorandum and is legally conducting the

    business of an academic centre.

Moreover, our client is not required to

register as a school with the Western Cape

    Department of Education.

    Legal battles loom

    over illegal school

    S

    mall tourism businesses have been

given a boost through Cape Town

    Tourisms Board Development

    Fund.

The fund selects two small businesses

annually to receive a R50 000 cash prize

as well as access to business develop-

    ment and networking opportunities.

Started three years ago, the fund is

made up of themoney that would be paid

to board members. They decided to in-

stead serve on the board for free and do-

nate their would-be earnings to develop-

ing small businesses in the tourism in-

dustry, with the focus on historically

    disadvantaged individuals, explains

    Cape Town Tourism chairperson Enver

    Mally.

    Entrepreneurs have lots of people

telling them why their idea wont work,

but they dont get a lot of support. Entre-

preneurs need to be encouraged. Its a

tough road to walk with a lot of knocks

along the way. Entrepreneurs and small

businesses are the obvious solutions to

    job creation, he says.

Turning Point B&B in Kuils River,

owned by husband and wife Doris and

Isaac Manini, as well as Maboneng

    Township Arts Experience, which lo-

cates and adopts township homes as

home galleries where local artists can

    display theirworks to visitors andwhere

the women of the home can earn extra

income, were named recipients at an

    event on Wednesday 30 March.

    Started in Alexandra, Johannesburg,

by artist Siphiwe Ngwqenya, the organi-

sation was born out of a need to exhibit

his work. After being told he would have

to wait two years for space in a gallery,

Ngwqenya started exhibiting in his own

    neighbourhood.

The organisation now focuses on Cape

Town and surrounds in the areas of Lan-

ga, Gugulethu and Kayamandi, and one

of the key aims is to develop a new and

diverse audience and platform for arts

    and culture in Cape Town.

Its inspirational to see someone com-

ing from the dusty streets of the town-

    shipandbecomingcaptains of industry,

    Mally says.

However, this year the fund added a

    surprise announcement, with a third

beneficiary selected and funded by The-

    be Tourism.

The third award was given to Lungi

Sotyingwa, a former domestic worker in

Sea Point, who was encouraged by her

    employer,MarijkeFrijtersto, to start her

    own guest house.

Her shack chic bed and breakfast

opened in Khayelitsha in 2010, but was

closed after a devastating fire in 2014.

Sotyingwa and her partners rebuilt and

opened their doors again in September

    last year.

Sotyingwa plans to use the money to

train as a tour guide, to offer additional

services to her clients, as well as to com-

plete the rebuilding of the guest house.

    Shealsohopes to support local communi-

ty projects as the cash prize is accompa-

nied by business skills coaching, train-

    ing opportunities and mentorship.

    Our collective experience someof us

have been in tourism for decades is val-

uable. It may not feel like it, but we have

    learned through experience and trial

and error, and this we can put to good

use by offeringwisdom, insights and tips

to small businesses seeking to make it in

    this competitive environment, Mally

    says.

    Small businesses

    givenmajor boost

    A 90 square metre award-winning vegetable

garden that provides more than 10kg of food

a day to augment the provincial school feed-

ingprogramme, is just one example of the ini-

tiatives that set apart Cavalleria Primary

    School in Scottsdene, Kraaifontein.

In the sad tradition of disadvantaged com-

munities in the Cape, Cavalleria School is

    under-resourced by comparison with accept-

    ed norms.

Nevertheless, its 1169 learners achieve a

high academic standard and the schools

sporting and dramatic performance is some-

thing that can always be celebrated.

This week, the school celebrated the open-

    ing of its newR5.85millionArchwayFounda-

tion hall one of 67 provided to similar

schools in the Western Cape over the past 10

    years.

    Principle Hurshele Carolissen says arriv-

ing at the school in 2010, he found Cavalleria

    in need of resurrection.

We lived in hope of success for our efforts

and those of the children, in a dismal situa-

tion and eventually, hard work achieved re-

    sults, he says.

The security, comfort and sheer pleasure

of the hall are also sharedwith the local com-

munity and surrounding schools. Funds can

be raised fromevents at thehall and fromhir-

    ing fees, he says.

John Matthews, group CEO of Garden Cit-

ies, says principals with vision are those

who fully take advantage of the enormous

    value of a school hall.

Building of the halls is done with proceeds

from the foundation alone, or together with

funds from the Western Cape Education De-

    partment (WCED).

According to Matthews, more than R3 bil-

lion at todays value has still to be spent to

provide halls for Western Cape schools that

need them a task, he says, that will take

more than 100 years to complete.

V Corporate donors who would like to participate in

the programme can call Matthews on 021 5587181.

    School celebrates new hall

The Miggie Challenge will once again take

place onWednesday 27April at thePaarl dam

to raise funds and awareness for cystic fibro-

    sis and organ donation.

This family event with the only rule that

you must have fun, is hosted by the Cape

Town Angling Club (CTAC), of which 85% of

its members are based in the northern sub-

    urbs.

The Miggie Challenge was started in 2014

as a fun event to celebrate the 21st birthday

of Stefan Miggie King from Brackenfell, a

well loved angler in the fishing world who

suffered from cystic fibrosis. He passed away

two months after the Miggie Challenge was

    founded.

CTAC has since made the competition an

annual event to honour the life and positive

spirit of Stefan, says Miggies father,

Malcolm King, also the chairperson of the

    CTAC.

This year the funds raised are in aid of

Damian Wolf (19) from Fish Hoek, who was

diagnosed at the age of 13 with cystic fibrosis

    and an adrenal tumour.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genet-

ic disease that causes persistent lung infec-

tions and progressively limits the ability to

breathe. In the lungs, themucus clogs the air-

ways and trapsbacteria leading to infections,

extensive lung damage and eventually, respi-

ratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus

prevents the release of digestive enzymes

that allow the body to break down food and

absorb vital nutrients. There is currently no

cure for cystic fibrosis, says King.

Cystic fibrosis patients have a short life

expectancy with many prolonged stays in

hospital making them put their life on hold.

With theMiggie Challenge we aim to give

a beneficiary the funds that could help them

make at least one of their dreams come true,

    King says.

The Miggie Challenge is a one of a kind

fishing event with back-to-front rules and its

    very own fancy dress theme.

The only rule of the day is to have fun. An-

glers are encouraged to break the rules, steal

each others fish and fish however they

    please, he says.

Donated prizes are handed out at the end

of the day for categories such as the smallest

    fish and the best dressed.

    In conjunction with Synchronize Systems,

the Daniel and Friends Fund hosted its an-

nual CPR course at the Alta du Toit School

for learning disabilities in Kuils River.

    Synchronize Systems provides occupa-

tional health and safety training courses to

companies and families in Cape Town.

    Trainer Michelle Phillips showed no

mercy, and every participant had to earn

their certificate, by practising on the differ-

ent sized dummies provided, ranging from

babies, children to adults. She emphasised

how important it is to know the emergency

number of the different ambulance services

    byheart, saysKateLaurie fromDaniel and

    Friends.

The morning was attended by private in-

dividuals and groups from schools and

crches, along with parents involved with

    Daniel and Friends.

As these parents all have special needs

children, most with rare medical condi-

tions, the CPR course proved to be of utter-

most importance to them. You can never

    Strange objectmystifies resident

    Image 1

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    I

s it a plane, is it ameteor or is it a satellite?

Or could it perhaps be the International

    Space Station (ISS)?

Brackenfell resident Martin du Toit was

mystified by the strange light he spotted in

    the night sky last Friday.

It was late night, possible 23:00, when I

looked out my window, which has a pano-

ramic view on Table Mountain. We spotted

a light travelling pretty fast and very high

up in the night sky. It was too high to be a

Boeing and it travelled from east to west

    across the sky, he says.

The object, says Du Toit, resembled a sil-

ver marble ghoen, but appeared to flicker

    different colours.

He grabbed his camera with a 42 optical

zoom lens and captured the image.

    Zooming inyoucould clearly see themar-

ble ghoen form but on the photo a darker

spot appears in the middle and a green line

    on the edge, he says.

It did not appear to be a normal satellite

as it wasnt flying dead straight, but rather

with a sudden sharp turn to the left and then

    right again.

    Green fringe

    Physicist and astro-photographer Dr Bru-

no Letarte took a look at the photos and

    made an educated guess.

The photos are very out of focus with a

long exposure (one second), but looking at

the first image it could verywell be the inter-

national space station, he told TygerBur-

    ger.

The first image he says is in focus, unlike

the second one that is clearly out of focus

    making it impossible to speculate.

The green fringe on the edge of the topic

    indicates chromatic aberration, which is

typical of an out of focus image of a light

    source, he says.

    According to information obtained from

theNasawebsite, the space station looks like

an aeroplane or a very bright star moving

across the sky, except it doesnt have flash-

ing lights or changes direction. It will also

bemoving considerably faster than a typical

aeroplane and is so bright it can also be seen

from the centre of a city. Then, just as sud-

denly as it appeared, it disappears.

The ISS circles the Earth every 90 min-

utes. It travels at about 28 000 kilometres per

hour, which gives the crew 16 sunrises and

sunsets every day. In themore than 15 years

that people have been living on board, the

station has circumnavigated the Earth tens

    of thousands of times.

Reflecting the light of the sun

    According toNasa, all sightingswill occur

within a few hours before or after sunrise

or sunset. This is the optimumviewing peri-

od as the sun reflects off the space station

and contrasts against the darker sky.

The space station is visible because it re-

flects the light of the sun the same reason

we can see the moon. However, unlike the

moon, the space station isnt bright enough

to see during the day... as such, it can range

from one sighting opportunity a month to

several a week, since it has to be both dark

where you are, and the space station has to

happen to be going overhead, says Nasa.

Viewing opportunities in Cape Town are

possible from now until 21 April.

V Nasas Spot the Station programme lets you sign

up to receive alerts to let you know when the ISS

will be visible from your location anywhere in the

world. You can get alerts via email or text message.

Typically, alerts are sent out a few times eachmonth

when the stations orbit is near your location. Visit

https://spotthestation.nasa.gov to sign up or view

a list of upcoming sighting opportunities. Image 2

Cape Town learners will be highly pre-

pared when stepping into the exam room

in June, following the return of the Grade

11 to 12 isiXhosa set-work play Amaza, an

    Artscape youth development skills produc-

tion to be held from Wednesday 18 May to

Thursday 2 June at the Artscape Theatre.

Endorsed by the Western Cape Educa-

tion Department and support from the HCI

Foundation, Amaza forms part of the Art-

    scape educational youth development pro-

gramme that aims to promote social cohe-

    sion, good citizenship and empowerment

    through the arts.

The high quality production, by ZS Qan-

gule, is in its sixth consecutive season and

is aimed at Grade 11 and 12 isiXhosa

learners from the greater Cape Town area.

The two hour play will once again be pre-

sented as a full stage production that will

also appeal to the general public.

The purpose of the educational pro-

gramme is to assist grade 11and12 learners

    academically by presenting plays which

are taught as literature on a theatre stage,

therefore putting it in its intended setting,

saysMarlene Le Roux, chief executive offi-

    cer for Artscape Theatre.

We will also be introducing learners to

theatre and drama production of a high

quality, thereby building the audience of

    the future, she adds.

    Directed by Thokozile Ntshinga, Amaza

is a 17 cast member thriller set in a rural

village in the Transkei. A police detective

stationed in Port Elizabeth is investigating

takes him back to the village where he and

    thewomanhemarried came from.His visit

there coincides with the double funeral of

a couple that were mysteriously murdered

in Johannesburg. Adultery, deceit and lies

are just some of the ingredients of this in-

triguing tale. His investigation takes him

to Johannesburg, then to Swaziland and

back to Port Elizabeth. As he is trying to

solve the mystery, he stumbles across the

evidence he was originally looking for.

    A

    20-year-oldmanwasarrested following

the hijacking of a cigarette delivery ve-

    hicle in Brackenfell on Thursday.

According to information provided to Tyg-

erBurger, the vehicle was making deliveries

at Fairbridge Shopping Centre when the hi-

    jackers struck.

A gold colour Honda Ballade with four

    unidentified armed suspects suddenly

stopped next to the vehicle. Two of the sus-

pects got out, one pointing a firearm at the

driver. They bundled him into the back of the

delivery vehicle and drove off, a police

    spokesperson said.

They then stopped after a short distance

along William Dabs Road where a white

Isuzu LDV, Toyota Camry and the gold Hon-

da, occupied by an unknown number of sus-

    pects, surrounded the vehicle.

They emptied the delivery vehicle of its

contents an undisclosed amount of ciga-

rettes and fled the scene, leaving behind the

    driver and his vehicle.

He managed to flag down help from a pri-

vate security vehicle in the vicinity of the

    mall, who patrolled the area.

The Isuzu was spotted and chased down

by the security vehicle, leading to the appre-

hension of one suspect, said police.

The other suspects managed to get away

on foot, but several boxes of cigarettes were

    recovered.

The suspect will appear in the Kuils River

Magistrates Court in due time facing char-

    ges relating to hijacking.

    O

is.

My drome

Bonita (34), n joernalis van beroep, is on-

langs uit 15 kandidate gekies as die nuwe

    mede-aanbieder vandie radiostasie sehuis-

    toegaan-program,nadatKarlienKruger die

    stasie in Maart verlaat het.

Die kandidate het vooraf almal n paar

    werkswinkels in die radio-uitsaaiwese

    meegemaakwaarnahulle elkeen nkansge-

Bonita was verreweg

menaal!

dio-uitsaaiwese. Sy is beslis n aanwins vir

    ons, s Van der Sandt.

Daarby saam, voeg hy by, besit sy ook n

    bre verwysingsraamwerk deurdat sy inte-

    ressante gesprekke kan voer.

As n blinde persoon op radio is daar na-

    tuurlik wesenlike uitdagings, maar Bonita

laat dit so maklik en moeiteloos lyk.

Sy beweeg blitsvinnig haar vingers oor n

eienaardige boksie op haar skoot terwyl sy

    die middag se verkeersverslag lees.

Van der Sandt verduidelik: Daar is baie

tegniese aspekte in radio wat sig vereis,

soos om voortdurend monitors te lees om

by te bly. Nuus en verkeersflitse kom vin-

nig deur en moet ook afgelees word.

Bonita ontvang die verslae vanaf haar

selfoonwat aan n tipe braille-toestel gekop-

pel word. Ek noem dit sommer my braille-

tablet. Soos die inligting deur die

foon kom, word dit ast ware in

braille vertaal, wat ek dan met

    my vingerpunte kan lees, ver-

    duidelik sy.

Dis soms bietjie moelik as die

    inligting in Engels deurkom en

    ek dit blitsvinnig in Afrikaans

    moet vertaal, s sy.

Sy lag weer. Hoe sou jy nou n

    woord soos multi-vehicle pile-up

    inminderas n sekondevertaal?

Bonita is blind gebore en het in

    Hanover Park grootgeword.

Daar waar hulle eers skiet en

    dan vrae vra, s sy.

    Sy het haar skoolloopbaan by

    dieAthlone-skool vir blindes vol-

tooi en haar daarna as joernalis

    bekwaam by die Kaapse Skierei-

    landse Universiteit van Tegnolo-

    gie (KSUT).

Sy het verlede jaar terug ver-

huis Kaap toe nadat sy vir sewe

    jaar in Johannesburg werksaam

    was as n sosialemedia-fundi by

    n bekende maatskappy.

n Vriend het my vertel van

die geleentheid by Bok Radio en

ek het dit met albei hande vasge-

gryp.

n groot nuwe uitdaging. Ek het

    baie om te leer!

    F

ive-voice vocal group Track Five is set

to treat audiences to an evening of jazz

when they launch their fifth CD, Love

you Madly, at the Drostdy Theatre in Stel-

    lenbosch on Saturday.

One of these voices is baritone singer, di-

rector, composer and arranger Gavin Ful-

    lard, from Durbanville.

    Growingup inStutterheim in theEastern

Cape, Fullard spent his evenings listening

to the sounds of Big Bands like the Glenn

Miller orchestra, drifting from the old

record player on the verandah of his family

home. This music, together with the influ-

ence of his sisters both pianists would

be the catalyst to a career in the music in-

dustry that has spanned four decades.

Today the 83-year-old Fullard spends his

    dayswriting arrangements tomesmerise

and delight audiences, he says for his vo-

cal groupTrack Five. The group, whichwas

established in 1995, will be joined by the Ra-

mon Alexander Trio, Saxit and Engela Ful-

lard on flutes when they introduce their

new release on Saturday 16 April.

Our latest CD has a diverse range of mu-

sical content and features tracks suchas the

10-voice combination of Track Five and Ar-

thur Pietersens A5 vocal group. It also in-

cludes a few classical sounds, with two orig-

inal compositions, a couple of Afrikaans

songs and several well-loved jazz classics,

    explains Fullard.

While Fullard may be the only member

left of the original Track Five group, he has

    beenperformingwith fellowmembersMon-

ique Hellenberg, Michelle van Zyl and Ar-

thur Pietersen for several years, with Am-

ber Kruger recently joining the group.

    While most vocal groups undergo

changes in personnel, the character of the

music defining each group prevails, he

says, recalling the various singers he has

performed with in the past. Many former

members of Track Five have gone on to pur-

    sue solo careers.

Over the years, Track Fives repertoire

has included well-known jazz and contem-

porary songs and romantic ballads and,

says Fullard, is influenced by the sounds of

great vocal groups like Four Freshmen,

    Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, NewYorkVoi-

ces, the Real Group and Accent.

    Before becoming a full-time musician,

Fullard travelled and taught overseas and

formed and performed with a vocal quartet

in the UK and a double mixed quartet of 15-

year-olds in Utah in the USA. After nearly

38 years of teaching mathematics and sci-

ence at high school, Fullard started his first

    vocal group, Tangerine, in 1975.

Today Track Five has five albums under

their belt and has performed at various ve-

nues in and around Cape Town.

Recently the group was invited to give a

private performance at a 40th birthday par-

ty of a familymember ofCraigHinds, leader

of the popular SouthAfrican pop rock band,

Watershed, where they had the privilege of

performing a special song with the band.

Track Fives future looks really bright

and promising. We recently won the vocal

    group category of theTalentAfrica regional

(Western Cape) competition and look for-

ward to the national finals at the end of

    April here in Cape Town.

V Tickets can be purchased at the Drostdy Theatre

It annoys me as an animal

    lover that when the circus

comes to town, the very next

day one receives in the post

box a letter from some organi-

    sation condemning them for

    using animals in their shows.

The circus has on average ten

    wild animals which cannot be

    rehabilitated in the wild

    anyway.

We have in our area an

    organisation called the Karoo

    Animal Protection Society who

    is desperately looking for help

    to rescue thousands of dogs,

cats, etc. in the rural commu-

nities of SA and do so on a

    volunteer basis. All monies,

time etc. go to the animals.

    Maybe the municipality

    should consider a license fee

    for non-spayed bitches only,

    that would encourage owners

to do the right thing. The

    funds collected should be

    directed to the various animal

    welfare organisations. This

    may reduce the unwanted

    animal population and the

need to exterminate so many of

    mans best friends.

    Go onto their website at

    www.kaps.org.za and read

    about them. Some of the

    stories and pictures will bring

    tears to your eyes.

The circus at least feeds and

    takes care of their animals.

They should be the least of

    ones worries.

    I compiled this list because

    Besware van ouer

    Is daar nog

    gentlemen

    en ladies?

So n paar dae gelede op TV s n ou oom

vir iemand: I must leave now, a gentle-

man never keeps a lady waiting. Sjoe,

re. Dit laat my dadelik wonder of daar

Daardie maniere

wat jy by jou ouers en grootouers geleer

het. Goeie maniere soos Emsie Schoeman

    sn.

    As ek n verskriklike veralgemening

kan maak, reken ek dat mense ouer as 35

of 40 nog goeie maniere geleer is, maar

die jongklomp sukkel daarmee. Ek s

    gemaklik voel in n

    verskeidenheid van

    situasies.

    Dit beteken onder

    meer om jou

    kollegas te groet

    wanneer jy by die

    werk opdaag en

    wanneer jy weer

    die pad vat, en om

    jou base (maar ook

    jou Klase) te

    respekteer. Mense

met goeie maniere gooi ook nie n

telefoon in die ander persoon se oor neer

nie, al is jy hoe kwaad. Mense met goeie

maniere skree ook nie op ander mense

nie.

n ete-afspraak bywoon of gaan fliek.
