der van die Durbanville-polisie, het die My-burghs se Renault Scenic van voor in ’n

45 ton-vragmotor vasgery.“Die trok wat sement vervoer het, het in

Dis nou behal-we die blokkies wat almal in Kaapstad ge-skenk het,” sê Mariëtte Krige, sameroepervan Klein Erfgoed en die Wes-Kaapse Vete-raantrekker- en Enjinklub. Die VLV Tyger-bergsirkel is sover vir die grootste hoeveel-heid blokkies verantwoordelik.“Dan is daar ook tannie Matty van der

Over the next three years, thousands ofunemployed matriculants will be em-ployed as interns or school assistants

in no-fee schools across the City.“With an unemployment rate of almost

26% in South Africa, creating job opportu-nities is undoubtedly one of the most press-ing socio-economic challenges facing us asa country,” said Debbie Schäfer, WesternCape minister of education, when makingthe announcement last week.

“A better educated and more highlyskilled workforce is the most pressing long-term priority for the South African econo-my and for the Western Cape Government.”

The education department will be imple-menting a number of interventions to helpimprove the quality of education and in sodoing enhance the employability opportu-nities of local youth. The Western Cape De-partment of Local Government (DLG) hassigned an agreement with the NationalTreasury Jobs Fund to finance the project.

The DLG has appointed Casidra, a non-profit organisation, to implement theproject in collaboration with the educationdepartment.

“The partners will train and place justover 1600 school assistants during the first

phase of the project, starting this month.The programme will expose the school as-sistants to a range of potential careers, fromIT support to teaching, social work, land-scape gardening and administration duringthe duration of the project,” she said.

Feedback from schools regarding the ini-tiative has been most positive, with schoolsindicating their excitement to have an addi-tional set of hands to assist with these tasks.

The programme will offer employmentfor six or 10-monthperiods atno-fee schools,depending on the tasks involved. The in-ternswill receive stipendsofR1500 amonth.

About 500 schools and some 10 000 youthin the province will benefit over the three-year period.

The schools will have selected three can-didates from the applicants, preferably liv-ing close to the school, by 10 June.

The schools are expected to mentor theschool assistants, provide training wherenecessary, and manage their daily pro-grammes, while the assistants will focus onareas that complement and support thework of teachers, thus releasing teachers tofocus on their teaching.V Candidates can apply via the WCED website atwced.school.za (see School internship programme).

The City of Cape Town has com-menced a pilot project using cardpayment facilities at itsmotor ve-hicle registration office in theCape Town Civic Centre.

On the first day of the pilot,which kicked off on Monday27 June,more than 100 credit anddebit card transactions wereprocessed.

According to a statement, theCity hopes to roll out this serviceto other City customer centresacross the metro.

The use of card payment facili-ties will be tested for approxi-mately one week at the motor ve-hicle registration (MVR) office atthe Cape Town Civic Centre be-fore the City expands this serviceto other MVR facilities acrossCape Town.Next the service will be rolled

out to theMVRoffice in theProm-enade Mall in Mitchell's Plain,which will be followed by weeklyroll-outs to the MVR offices inMilnerton, Khayelitsha, Plum-stead and other MVR offices.The city wide roll-out to MVR

offices is expected to take approx-imately two months. The expan-sion of card payment facilities forthe payment of rates and tariff ac-counts, building plan and landuse applications and traffic fineswill take a bit longer as systemupgrades are required.

The City will accept paymentsof up to R5000 per transaction bycredit or debit card, or any othermeansof paymentwhichdoesnothold any cost implications for the

client. This amount covers mosttransactions by clients, be it formotor vehicle licences, rates andservices bills, or other sundrypayments. The City will, howev-er, reclaim the relevant bankingfee for any payment over R5000.Clients are encouraged to

make electronic payments forlarge transactions with the City,as this will result in minimalbank reclaims of banking char-ges.Electronic (EFT) payments

carry the lowest bank charges.Currently, more than 60% of pay-ments to theCityareviaEFTpay-ments.“Our first day of testing went

well and 103 card transactions toa value of approximately R45 000were processed,” says the deputymayor, IanNeilson. “The roll-outof credit and debit card paymentsat all of the City’s customer cen-tres further enhances the City’songoing improvement in conve-nience to assist our clients to paytheir municipal bills and mini-mises their need to handle cash.The success of our online offer-ings, suchas receivingmunicipalaccounts by e-mail, the option ofregistering for the City’s e-servi-ces portalwhichallows for onlinepayments of rates, tariff and mo-tor vehicle licence payments forCity clients, as well as the optionof making payments at third-par-ty sites such as supermarkets, isnow complemented by the im-proved functionality at the City’sown customer centres.”

City rolls out cardpayment facilities

The City of Cape Town has acquired32 baby simulators for use as part ofthe its substance abuse programmein schools. The programme formspart of theCity’s social developmentand early childhood developmentdirectorate substance abuse pro-gramme for children.

City’s Mayco member social de-velopment and early childhood de-

velopment councillor, Suzette Lit-tle, says the directorate started theacquisition process in 2015 and re-cently took delivery of the simula-tors.

Little says each of its eight dis-tricts will receive four simulatorsincluding a healthy baby simulator,substance abuse addiction simula-tor, foetal alcohol syndrome simula-

tor, and a “shaken baby syndrome”simulator. “The simulators are ableto illustrate quite vividly the impactof substance abuse during pregnan-cy and the effects of child abuse aswell as the fact that parenting is nowalk in the park,” she says.

“It is an unconventional method,but a pilot project last year showedthat it works,” she adds.

A house in Northpine burnt to the groundover the past weekend.At about 20:43 on Saturday 2 July, fire and

rescue services responded to the fire in Ash-ford Circle. Two fire engines, one rescue ve-hicle and one water tanker were dispatchedfrom Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and EppingFire Stations.“Residents escaped the inferno in time,

but the entire structure and contents of thedwelling were affected by the fire,” saysTheo Layne, spokesperson of the City’s fireand rescue services.According to a source close to the family,

the family lost everything.“They could not save anything; it’s very

sad. They have lived in Northpine for over27 years,” this source said.According to Layne the fire was caused by

sparks from an open fireplace that ignitedlounge fabric material.

There is a buzz of excitement in thestreets of the temporary relocation area(TRA) in Wallacedene.

For the first time since the start of thisinformal settlement in 2005, residentswill have legal electricity.The TRA was formed as a result of a

lack of formal housing in Mooitrap, Wal-lacedene.

“There simply was not enough accom-modation at the time and there was noother option, so people settled here,” saysward councillor Brenda Hansen of thesmall piece of City-owned land. Hansenwas instrumental in the City’s negotia-tions with Eskom to electrify this area.“These negotiations have been ongoing

since 2011, but was held up due to muchpolitical interference,” she says.

Much of this was caused by illegal landinvasions by newcomers into the TRA.

“Often shacks were erected overnightand popped up like mushrooms, whichmade effective service delivery in the ar-

ea almost impossible,” she says. “It wasanarduous task to compacthardened sur-faces, without which Eskom could notcome in with their trucks and equipmentto build the infrastructure.”During this time, the population of the

TRA boomed. “In 2011 we recorded about800 residents and some 500 structures.With the latest survey done last week,2000 structures were recorded. I estimateit at close to 10 000,” says Hansen.In the meantime these residents were

reliant on dangerous illegal connections.Thembelani Mzola, chairman of the

TRA’s residents’ forum, says they had towork together as a community to put astop to the illegal land invasions.“Infrastructure could not be developed

here as long as people kept on invadingevery open piece of land. As a communitywe made the decision to report all illegalland invasions to the City’s anti-land in-vasion unit,” he says.“We have waited very long,” he adds.But Hansen says the multimillion rand

Eskom project is set to commence withinthe next month or so.

But, really, locating thoseemergency diesel generatorsbelow ground demonstrated amost remarkable lax in designprofessionalism. Who by? Iwon’t speculate!

If those diesel generatorshad been installed well aboveground level, we would nevereven have heard of Fukushi-ma.

V Intussen het Fairmont Highse o.19A-span ’n baie suksesvol-le toernooi in Oos-Londen be-leef. Ná ’n oorwinning van 15-7oor Cambridge High, die gas-heerskool, het Fairmont ook 20-17 afgereken met ’n SelborneHigh-vyftiental.

HTS Bellville het die afgelopeweek gemengde welslae behaaltydens sy kort toer in die Suid-Kaap. Die Bellvilliete het klaar-gespeel met Groot-Brakrivier(25-13) en Knysna (41-7), maarhet die kous oor die kop gekryby York (3-5) en PW Botha (13-19).

Whether it is tennis, athletics, netballor action netball, Lené Stofberg isgood in all of them – very good.

The Grade 8 Durbanville High Schoollearner is the TygerBurger Sport Star of theMonth winner.Last year when the Western Province ten-

nis team was selected Lené was chosen asnumber one for the WP A team.When it comes to the fast-paced game of

action netball, here too she received her pro-vincial colours for theWPA team as goal at-tack,wing attack and goal shooter for thena-tional championship which took place earli-er this year inMidrand.Theymade the final,but lost by just one goal against Kwa-ZuluNatal.In athletics Lené excels in javelin, and in

her final year last year in Durbanville Pri-marySchool she obtainedher provincial col-ours for athletics as well. She retained hercolours for javelin this year.She was also awarded her provincial col-

ours for netball last year. In April this yearshe trialled for the WP team against Wine-lands, Overberg, West Coast and SWD andwas selected for the Western Cape A team.She will travel with the Western Cape net-ball team to Durban this month to competeagainst the best players of all nine provincesin the Winter Games.Receiving provincial colours in four dif-

ferent sporting codes is a rare achievement,and thus deserves the accolade of a worthywinner.“I think tennis is the most competitive for

me as it is an individual sport. If you lose,

you only have yourself to blame, whereas innetball as a team sport you share the spoilsof victory or consolidate one another in de-feat.“Having said that, I think my best sport

performance-wise is netball and action net-ball. Playing four different sports can betough sometimes, but I still enjoy it thor-oughly,” she says.“The important thing is to stay fit. During

the summermonths I get coaching for tennisand athletics, but for the rest it is basicallyjust matches and team training sessions,”says Lené.She recalls the day in April when she re-

ceived the news that she made the WesternCape netball team as one of her most memo-rable moments yet.“I lovemysport – all four, in fact – but look-

ing towards the future it will be a dreamcome true if I can play netball for my coun-try.“I alsowant tomakeuseof the opportunity
