ies from daybreak until dusk for a plate

of food and a place to sleep, but a group

of school children also have to do so in the

The group refers to the children from the

They are my learners, my babies, and

The department has nothing against the

sales, but says the learners cannot do it from

the middle of the road that is not on.

They can be knocked down or kidnapped

standing there next to each other, he add-

    ed.

Wehave also spoken to their parents and

the church pastors (George Joseph) wife

and told her this was not on.

She (Joy Joseph) had the audacity to tell

me well, people are selling fruit on the side

of the road, so what is my problem? Those

people are 18 plus years old! They are not

learners and that is not an excuse. Then she

    got very defensive, Ramawoothar said.

This is ridiculous, but these kids are so

in need, they stay on the church premises

and the church is putting them in a catch-22

situation the parents are worried about

what they would do if the church should

stop giving the children a refuge, he said.

Ramawoothar said one of the learners is

in Grade 12 and he had spoken to her moth-

    er.

The mother said she couldnt take the

child out of the churchs care.

He added this was not an education de-

partment issue, as all of this was happening

    outside of school hours.

We need to get the parents involved.

These are not only our school kids there

are a number of them from other schools.

Something has to be done. One thing is for

sure: they are not permitted to sell anything

while in their school uniform, but how do

    we prevent them? he said.

I would get the department of social de-

velopment involved, but the church is the

problem; thats where the problem starts.

Also, the traffic department should put its

foot downand our communities need to step

    up.

TygerBurger spoke to the Citys Mayco

member for social development and early

    childhood development, Suzette Little.

This situation has been brought to our

attention. We will investigate and if any-

thing we find is illegal or contravenes the

    by-laws orRoadSafetyAct,wewill hand the

matter over to the proper authorities, she

said. We will also ask for a full report from

the relevant parties and if needs be, get our

social workers out to do interventions.

    All reasonable attempts by TygerBurger

to contact the church before going to print,

    failed.

Evidence exists though that the pastors

wife, Joy Joseph, had indeed read our ur-

gent request to get her ownandherhusband

    Georges comment.

children? Let us know what you think at briewe@

Parow police issued a warning that pedes-

trians should be careful when walking

over the bridge in De La Rey Road after

    an incident last weekwhen amanwalking

to work was confronted by three men and

    a woman.

    According to police spokesperson Lieu-

tenantKevinWilliams, one of the four peo-

ple asked the man for a cigarette lighter.

He told them that he didnt have a light-

er, after which one of the suspects pulled

out a gun and pointed it at his face. The

victim was so shocked that he fled. While

he ran away his phone fell out and one of

the suspects came to pick it up and ran

    away, says Williams.

At that moment, the Parow sector vehi-

cle drove by and the victim stopped the po-

lice and complained about the robbery.

After a long chase two of the suspects

were arrested and charged with robbery

    with a firearm.

According to Williams this kind of rob-

bery occurs regularly. It is mostly people

that walk to or from work that are being

targeted. We want to urge people to be ex-

tra vigilant when walking in the vicinity

    of the bridge, says Williams.

He says where possible people should

not walk alone, but in groups.

    haos by die Northlink-kollege in

    Bellville het Maandag voortgeduur

en daartoe gelei dat nege betogende

studente deur die polisie se openbare or-

de-eenheid (Pops) in hegtenis geneem is.

Di groep van nege het Maandag vanaf

08:30 hul veldtog teen die kollege voortge-

sit. Di veldtog woed reeds sedert verlede

    Donderdag oor ongelukkigheid rondom

    vervoertoelaes.

by ons in te haak. Van die studente het

pepersproei in die klasse gespuit en een

    van die dosente is aangehou.

Swart s di vrouedosent is erg getrau-

    matiseer n die gyselaarsituasie. Ons

studente is tans besig met assesserings.

    Onsmoeshulle vanoggendvra omvandie

kry. Die hele debakel rondom die reistoe-

lae wat aan behoeftige studente deur die

    departement van hor onderrig se

    NSFAS-eenheid toegeken word, kom

reeds n paar jaar lank aan. Swart verdui-

    delik: Volgens die Northlink-beursrigly-

    nehet onsbepaal dat onsaan studentewat

    binne n 10 km- tot 30 km-radius van die

kollege reis, R1 940 per akademiese jaar

betaal, en di binne n 31 km- tot 40 km-ra-

dius R3 881 per akademiese jaar.

    Die gewelddadige protesaksie sedert

2013 om dieselfde redes, het die kollege n

interdik teendie betogers laat kry.Die on-

Northlink be-

stuur ni die fonds nie. Ons doen die ad-

ministrasie daarvan, maar die geld word

    deur die NSFAS-eenheid verskaf. Hlle

aansoek geheg is.

Daar was verlede jaar ligter insiden-

pe, so ons moet gereeld die motors weg-

trek uit die parkeerarea, het hy ges.

    Chaos duur voort

    U

naware of what was about to hap-

    pen, little 15-month-old Fayaaz

Otto sat on hismothers lap, smil-

ing. He got a sense that something big

was about to happen when the uncle in

the green suit and gloves but a plastic

    mask over his mouth.

He moved his head as the anaesthe-

tist tried to put him to sleep before the

operation that could change his young

    life forever.

Fayaaz was born with a profound

hearing impairment and was about to

receive a cochlear implant that would

bring the joy of sound into his life for

    the very first time.

    His mother, Yusrah, had German

measles while she was pregnant and

this affected the child. I was devastat-

ed when the doctors told us right after

his birth that his hearing will be im-

paired. I hope that if this operation is

successful that he will develop speech

and be able to go to a mainstream

school, saysYusrah, noting she is not nerv-

    ous ahead of the operation.

Father Shiraaz Smith says theywould not

have been able to afford the operation for

their son, and it would not have been possi-

ble without the support of the 94.7 Bidvest

    Hear forLifeTrust, TygerbergHospital Stel-

    lenboschUniversityCochlear ImplantUnit,

Carel du Toit Centre and the Netcare Foun-

dation. Bidvest Hear for Life Trust funded

the R272 000 cochlear device, while the Net-

care Foundation funded the theatre costs

and follow-up scans at Netcare N1 City Hos-

    pital.

We are so excited that Fayaaz was able

to have the operation, which is important

to his development and future well-being,

and are grateful to these organisations for

making it possible, says Shiraaz. We

would also like to convey our thanks to Pro-

    fessor James Loock and anaesthetist

Dr Simon Christie for providing their

time and expertise free of charge. We

have been overwhelmed by the gener-

osity and care that we have received.

In an effort to create awareness of

    cochlear implants and hearing impair-

ment in general, NetcareN1 City invit-

ed the media to come and watch on a

big screen as Professor Loock, an ear,

nose and throat (ENT) surgeon of the

    Department ofOtorhinolaryngology at

    Tygerberg Hospital Stellenbosch Uni-

    versity Cochlear Implant Unit, under-

    took the procedure.

He explained that the device will be

turned on in four weeks time, once

Fayaaz had fully recovered from the

    operation.

According to Loock, who gave run-

    ning commentary throughout the op-

eration and took the medias ques-

tions, each patient reacts differently to

a cochlear implant and the success of

the operation depends on how well the

patient responds to both the procedure

    itself and all-important follow-up ther-

apies. However, I expect the operation to

be life changing for Fayaaz who was born

    with profound hearing impairment, which

means that he had such a high degree of

deafness that ordinary hearing aids were

not of any assistance to him, says Loock.

    Fayaaz will require intensive follow-up

speech and listening therapies in the years

to come. His parents will also be trained to

    assist him in speech development.

    gang of burglary suspects couldnt

break out of trouble when they drove

    into aCity ofCapeTownTraffic Servi-

ces roadblock in Bothasig on Friday.

Officers stopped them after noticing that

their van had no number plates. A search

of the vehicle revealed an array of house-

    breaking tools including balaclavas, gloves

and battery-operated grinders. It has since

been determined that two of the five sus-

pects have criminal records for house

    break-in and other crimes.

The Citys traffic service arrested 29 mo-

torists for drunk driving in Bothasig and 11

others during an operation focusing on ille-

gal street racing in Eerste River on Sunday.

One of them had a breath-alcohol content

of 1.71mg per 1000ml, which is seven times

the legal limit. The roadblock also served

up three suspects for possession of narcot-

ics and led to the confiscation of 449 man-

drax tablets and 12 dagga stoppe, while

another motorist was arrested for assault.

We often take flak frommotorists about

the inconvenience of roadblocks. The ar-

rests this past weekend serve as a reminder

of how important roadblocks are as an en-

forcement tool. While primarily focused on

road safety, officers are also on the lookout

for other illegal activity. Im very interest-

ed to see what the investigation into the

house breaking suspects reveals, and wont

be surprised if this gang is behind a rash

of incidents. Who knows how many crimes

they may have gotten away with had they

not been caught at that vehicle check-

point, says the Citys Mayco member for

    safety and security, JP Smith.

    Elsewhere, City traffic officers impound-

ed 11 vehicles and issued 102 fines during

anAmaphela taxi operation in the Gugulet-

hu area, while 21 suspects were arrested for

drunken driving during a roadblock held

on the R44 in the Gordons Bay area.

In the meantime the Citys Metro police

arrested nine suspects for drug-related of-

fences in Hanover Park, Bonteheuwel, Sea-

winds and Elsies River. Two of the suspects

will face additional charges of possession of

an unlicensed firearm after officers confis-

cated a 9mm Norinco pistol and 11 rounds

of ammunition. During one of the busts,

they recovered more than R55 000 in cash.

Most of these arrests were the result of

tip-offs received from members of the pub-

lic. I want to encourage residents to contin-

ue blowing the whistle on crime. I hope

    these successes will embolden whistle-

blowers and serve as proof that we act on

    information received, added Smith.

    T

he City of Cape Towns Parks Depart-

    ment has, after careful investigation

and consideration in relation with the

    Citys approved Tree Management policy,

decided to remove the very old wild fig tree

alongside the Ficus building in Arnold Wil-

    helm Street in Parow.

The municipal building was named after

the tree by using part of its Latin name,

which is ficus. The tree currently formspart

of the landscape and has been there for

    more than 30 years.

The premise that underpins the manage-

ment of trees in the City is that all trees are

valuable and therefore any request or deci-

sion for the removal of trees needs to be

carefully considered on a case-by-case basis

    by the City Parks Department.

Unfortunately the main trunk of the tree

has become too big and is currently threat-

ening to cause damage to the palisade fence

and building situated on the property.

Furthermore the root system of the tree

is growing vigorously and is causing dam-

age to the underground services as well as

    the tarred surface.

    There is no practical and

    cost efficient way to control

the growth of the tree and to

    prevent further damage to

    the building and infrastruc-

ture it was decided to remove

    it.

    The parks department will

plant twonew trees in a near-

by park to replace the tree as

    the area between the pali-

    sade fence and the Ficus

building is too small to ac-

    commodate another tree.

    In accordance with the

    Tree Maintenance policy of

the City of Cape Town trees

may only be removed if it

    presents a threat to human

life or property, or if the tree

    has died.

Vrou van Parow was vir twee dae

    agtereenvolgens die slagoffer van

tikkoppe wat nes opgeslaan het in n

    huis,wat voorheendeur polisielede bewoon

    is.

Bettie Burger, wat reeds meer as dertig

jaar in Mosselstraat woon, se hel het n ruk

    gelede begin (Polisiehuis gee vrounagmer-

jiese huis in n goeie buurt was.

slaan is. My kleinkinders se tablette enmy

selfoon is gesteel. As ek die booswig in die

    huis gevanghet,metnet nhanddoekommy

aangaan. Toe my man uitgaan om te kyk

trek. Hulle hetmyman en seun se klere van

    die wasgoedlyn gesteel, s Burger.

Dit was nie al nie. By nadere ondersoek

twee blareblasers netjies langs mekaar ge-

pak sodat hulle dit ook kon steel. Ons het

n klag by die polisie aanhangig gemaak,

    s Burger.

Dit blyk onmoontlik te wees om navraag

oor die huis te doen by Fred Johnson,

    streeksbestuurder van openbare werke.

Hy is f altyd in n vergadering f sy foon

    is onbeman.

nis. Twee selfone is by die verdagtes ge-

    vind,maarbynadere ondersoek is vasge-

nie. Die lede het hulle na die Goodwood-

    polisiekantoor geneem sodat daar kon

vasgestel word aan wie die fone behoort.

    Net sooshulle bydiekantoor ingestap

nulligs klink, kanhelp omdie saak gouer

    op te los.

As hierdie vroue nie die verdagtes

    onthouhet nie, konhulle dalkweggekom

    het, s Theunis.

    Verdagtes by polisie herken

Daar is nou ng minder rede vir afgetrede-

    LOUISA STEYL

    @lounotes

    A

fter 15 years as a professional axeman,

Axe is putting rock back in your

    soul.

Table Views Louis Axe Lourens is well

known for his cover performances in and

around Cape Town, but now, after a little

push fromhis fans, hes taken on an original

    project: The Axe Experience.

His debut album Rock back in your Soul

will be on sale for the first timewhen he per-

forms with one of his cover acts, Axenmore,

    at Hillcrest Quarry this Sunday.

Its here that music fans will be able to

    hear themusic that inspiredhis ownperson-

    al sound.

Its classic old school rockwith amodern

twist, says Axe. The old school hes refer-

ring to, is the sound of bands like Led Zeppe-

lin and ACDC; a sound hes very familiar

with considering hes been emulating these

acts for years. But then, from time to time,

the album also offers up something slightly

    reminiscent of Alter Bridge.

Axe started working on the album with

producer Dane Taylor about a year ago. He

co-produced and wrote the tracks himself

with ex Van Coke Kartel drummer Jason

Oosthuizen stepping in on drums and Die

Heuwels Fantasties Fred den Hartog re-

sponsible for a few bass lines.

    Axehasbeenplayingasaprofessionalmu-

sician with various acts for about 15 years.

He got his stage name back when he started

playing on his own after leaving the band

White Rabbit. After much deliberation and

using the slang word for guitar, he took on

the moniker Axe on Fire. The act later be-

came a duo when he was joined by Tauna

Collier. With her flaming red hair, she be-

came known as the fire, making Louis the

    Axe.

The Axe Experience is the fifth project

hes involved in at themoment and says its

about time he recorded his own music.

Some of these songs are years old, he

says, adding that as a perfectionist, he never

felt his music was good enough. But now,

if I had to die tomorrow, at least I can say:

    this is Axe.

The album will be officially launched in

    April.

Axe wants fans to get a chance to become

familiar with the music so theyll be singing

    along at the launch.

By then Jason will also be joining him as

a member of The Axe Experience when he

isnt working with Lost&Found, his new

project with The Parlotones Glen Hodgson.

Theyll be using session musicians to help

fill out the ranks when The Axe Experience

    performs live.

It was Jasonwho suggested that Axework

with Merwe Marchand le Roux for the al-

bumdesignwhich sports the image of amus-

    cle car flying off theuncompletedCapeTown

    bridges on the cover.

After the launch Axe and Jason plan to

gig as much as possible. Axe is also busy

sorting out the paperwork to send his music

    to radio.

This is only number one. Once hes

gauged the response to this album, Axe

hopes to have a direction for his second al-

bum. So far the feedbacks been good.

Eventually he also wants to take the al-

    bumtoEurope, but fornowAxesmain focus

will be on promotingRock back in your Soul.

I just cant wait to get this thing on the

    roll.

Fans can get their first listen of the album

at Axenmores show at Hillcrest Quarry on

Dit was my en my wederhelf se voorreg

om oor die afgelope 12 jaar hierdie plekke

en nog baie, baie meer te besoek,

want die reiskoors het behoorlik in 2004

    posgevat.

As jy eers Die Koors kry, los hy jou

nie, al doen jy wat. Vra maar enigiemand

    wat Die Koors het.

Reis maak jou gelyktydig brandarm en

skatryk.

Airbus of Boeing gly geluidloos oor jou

saamgaan. Dit is wanneer jou boekrak

    vol gepak is met

    Frommers, Lonely

    Planet, Fodors en

    Rough Guides en jy

    dit soos storieboeke

    lees.

    Dit is wanneer jy

    besluit om eerder

    oorsee te gaan

    vakansie hou as

    om nuwe kombuis-

    kaste in te sit.

    Want watter

    herinneringe gaan

    jy nou eintlik h

    aan nuwe kombuis-

    kaste.

lewe voller maak, jou dalk selfs n beter

mens maak.

    verwysingsraamwerk is.

These are all engineering projects under-

taken by Bellvilles Chris Bellingan, who is

responsible for building the set for the up-

    coming production of Salome.

Chris, founder and owner of Bellingan In-

genieurs, is a long-time patron of Cape Town

Opera and a self-confessed opera addict.

He was delighted at the opportunity to

combine his engineering skills with his pas-

    spectator and nothing couldmakeme happi-

er than working on this set.

Chris and his crew of 12 worked at full tilt

for seven weeks to complete the set by the

end of February. The resulting structure in-

volves 14 tons of steel on stage and is an in-

dustrial style stage that literally works on

    different levels.

    The set ofSalome, designed byConorMur-

promises that audiences will never have

seen anything like it on a South African

stage. Its an imposing set designed tomatch

a big budget productionwith a full orchestra

it was performed in 1981. The performance

inMarch is only the secondoccasion that the

opera has been performed locally. He says

    the production is a non-negotiable must-see

for any opera lover, but advises youve got

to do a bit of homework for Salome.

He bought an EMI recording of Hildegard

Behrens as Salome conducted by the Vienna

Philharmonic which he played 50 times be-

fore the performance in 1981 started.

When the curtain fell, I was totally blown

out of my mind. It was magic, he recalls.

For opera fans, Matthew Wilds produc-

tion of Salome promises to be new, exciting

    and even shocking.

V Salome will be on stage at the Artscape Opera

House on Tuesday 15, Thursday 17 and Saturday 19

March. Tickets are available at Computicket.

    Setting the stage for Salome

Bellvilles Chris Bellingan has been able to

combine two of his passions: engineering and

    opera.
