TAFE Queensland is proud to be the Training Partner for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. In our role as Training Partner, we are doing our part for the Games and the community by training a growing family of 15,000 enthusiastic volunteers, all of whom we will be celebrating in the months ahead.

Three TAFE Queensland students are preparing to make their mark on the international stage in two very different areas — by designing the hair and beauty salon for the Commonwealth Games' athletes and officials, and managing the triathlon course.

Diploma of Interior Design student Garnet Evans and Diploma of Building Design student Chad Becker, both from the Gold Coast, created the winning design for Salon XXI, the hair and beauty salon situated within the Games village.

Garnet said participating in the creation and development of part of the Games village was the perfect springboard for his career.

“We’re being exposed to bigger roles and different people. This is my chance to expand my career beyond anything I thought possible before. The larger the better!” he said.

Diploma of Event Management graduate Jarrad Easlea, from the Sunshine Coast, will put his knowledge of multi-sports events and road operations to the test with his new role of Triathlon Technical Operations Manager with the Games.

The graduate, who has spent the past five years working on major Ironman events, is looking forward to the biggest challenge of his career so far.

“There’s an insane amount of people all working in completely different roles, yet all working towards a common goal. It’s unlike any other workplace I’ve ever seen. It’s really like stepping through to a different world.”

Executive Director for Education and Training, Lee Russell said TAFE Queensland has a long and proud history of providing students with practical learning experiences.

“Knowing that their work will provide a more positive and healthy experience for the athletes, team officials, international media, royalty, Heads of State and dignitaries is something they can take with them for the rest of their lives,” she said.

“I chose fashion because there is an element of engineering in there too. You have to build the pieces you’re working on.

“And there’s also the global element. Everyone wears clothes.”

From those first afternoons at high school figuring out if fashion was for him, Tyler’s love of the industry grew, leading him to complete certificates II, III, and IV in fashion before enrolling into a Diploma of Fashion after graduating high school.

Once he completed his diploma, he enrolled in a Bachelor of Applied Fashion with the University of Canberra at TAFE Queensland's South Bank campus. Now, five years later, Tyler – who was named as a 'Face of TAFE' earlier this year and will appear in the summer marketing campaign, has interviewed fashion royalty, Professor Jimmy Choo, and has just wrapped up his final collection.

“When I look at my work at the end of my diploma and what I’m producing now, at the end of my degree, it’s amazing how much it’s changed. I can see how much I’ve improved.

“For me, it’s all about refining my practice and producing work that is up to the standard that I expect for myself. Furthering my education has definitely helped me to achieve that.”

His final collection is partly inspired by a six-month break in his studies, where he travelled the world and pondered what he wanted in life.

“It’s a safari chic collection inspired by the modern day traveller,” he said.

“It sums up who I am as a designer. From a visual point of view, it’s aesthetically beautiful and

glamorous. I’ve always loved luxury brands.

“But for me, it’s not just about travelling the world, it’s also about exploring who

we are and what we want from life. It’s like battle armour, a

high-end power suit.”

Though Tyler thinks globally, he isn’t set on leaving Brisbane any

time soon. Tyler's accepted an internship with The New Garde –

a fashion start-up for independent designers run out of Fortitude Valley.

“There are so many different realms in fashion to explore. People think it’s just about designing, but there’s marketing,

pattern making, printing, and business.”

“I’ve always been interested in all facets of the industry, from accessories

to men’s, women’s, and even kids clothing. I’d love to dabble with it

all in the future. I don’t want to close myself off to

any opportunities.”

Being open to different possibilities is a motto that Tyler

lives by. It’s being open to opportunities

that led him into the industry as

a teenager.

“TAFE really helped me to

solidify my love of fashion, but I went

into it knowing that if I didn’t like it,

I could just do something else. You

have to be open to just trying things out.

“The opportunities I’ve had are beyond what I ever

expected and I’m really looking forward to the future.”

STARTING WITH TAFE AT SCHOOL AND POWERING ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO A FASHION DEGREE AT SOUTH BANK, TYLER IWINSKI HAS TAKEN A STRAIGHT SHOT TO HIS DREAM CAREER.

It's something he never thought possible, as he was unsure of his path when he finished high school. He just knew that he wanted to be creative and to work with his hands.

Torn between a love of the arts and aspirations to design theme park rides as a mechanical engineer, it was a disinterest in maths that led him to undertake a fashion course through TAFE at School in year 11 and 12.

“I love using my hands and being creative.”

SIMON NAAWI MAKES IT HIS BUSINESS TO INSPIRE OTHERS. THE 25-YEAR-OLD TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER, WHO WAS BORN AND RAISED ON THE TINY CORAL CAY — MASIG ISLAND, IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING OTHERS FOLLOW IN HIS FOOTSTEPS TO HIGHER EDUCATION.

Having left his tropical island home to complete his high school studies in a Cairns boarding school, 837 kilometres away, Simon returned to Masig Island after graduation, with the aim of undertaking further studies in business and management.

MAKING EDUCATION HIS BUSINESSHe got the ball rolling by enrolling in a Diploma of Business and a Diploma of Management with TAFE Queensland, which he completed via residential block studies.

“I received continuous support from my teachers and class mates; we all became really close, like a big family of like-minded people.”

Now Simon is preparing for his next step; completing a Bachelor of Business and Management at James Cook University.

“I never really thought that I was ever going to study at a university level, but about halfway through my course at TAFE Queensland I realised that I really wanted to continue learning,” he said.

“I’ve been able to gain credit toward my bachelor because of my studies at TAFE. The whole process has been pretty straight forward.”

As well as gaining invaluable business knowledge, Simon believes his studies have also strengthened his resolve to help others in his community to access education.

“I’ve made it my business to go back and provide mentoring support to new students,” he said.

“It’s made me feel good to give back knowing that I was once in a similar situation to them.”

TWENTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD TAFE QUEENSLAND GRADUATE AND SUNSHINE COAST BUSINESS OWNER, MADELINE RAWLINGS, BECAME BEWITCHED BY THE WONDER AND CREATIVITY OF GRAPHIC DESIGN

AT AN EARLY AGE, AND GREW UP DETERMINED TO TURN HER PASSION INTO A CAREER.

Madeline co-founded the company Xandra, while setting up her own freelance graphic design and branding company The Binding. Xandra is one of the first organisations in the world to work exclusively on developing chatbots — robots with personality that interact with

people via operating chat platforms like Facebook Messenger.

“Excitingly, we’re working with The City of Maroochydore to help build this for their smart city,” she said.

“Our chatbot will be used to inform people about the history and future plans for the new CBD and surrounding area.”

"Personifying brands has never been more important and conversational interfaces like chatbots will dictate how brands engage customers; how companies transact business; and how physical spaces, including cities, interact with members and residents.”

“It’s a really exciting time for both designers and residents on the Sunshine Coast and to have the opportunity to be a part of this project is allowing me to play an active role in shaping the future of my own community,” she said.

Madeline comes from a family of creatives, including her surf reporter father, and Billabong designer aunt, who turned their passion for design and love of the Sunshine Coast’s surf culture into a career.

After modelling for Billabong as a child, Madeline caught the creative bug, studying textiles and fashion at school, before enrolling in a Diploma of Graphic Design at TAFE Queensland.

“TAFE made sense to me. I didn’t want to spend months or even years learning the theory of how to design things; I wanted to get in there and do it.

“I’d spent five years at school in a very hands-on practical learning environment and loved it, thrived in it, in fact. I wanted to replicate that learning environment and graduate job-ready to achieve my goal of owning my own business and doing my own thing.”

IT WAS DURING A HIGH SCHOOL WORK EXPERIENCE STINT IN A CHILDCARE CENTRE THAT RAYLEEN ROSS REALISED SHE WANTED TO WORK IN EDUCATION.

The 21-year-old, who recently completed a Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, believes much of who we are is learnt in our first few years, which is what drew her to the industry.

“I’ve learnt that quality early childhood education can have a positive long-term impact on the lives of children and their families,” she said.

“I’m teaching children to be culturally aware and respectful, I’m helping them to be effective communicators.

I’m also encouraging them to develop a strong sense of identity and so much more.”

Having already secured a position in her field, Rayleen credits her swift career progression to having the option to cut down her study time and costs with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

The RPL program took Rayleen’s work experience into account, reducing the time she spent in the classroom, and getting her job-ready faster.

“My teachers were very supportive and it’s great to have my prior experience recognised because it allowed me to enhance my career pathway in a shorter period of time,” she said.

“In the near future I hope to be a lead educator and, someday, a childcare centre director.”

Though the industry is expected to keep booming, Rayleen said it’s the fulfilment she gets from her work that cemented her career choice.

“Everyone I met at TAFE has been willing to go out of their way to help me achieve my goals and now I’m working in a wonderful childcare facility and I truly love coming to work every day,” she said.

“It’s really great to have a career that makes me feel so fulfilled. I’ll never be bored or unsatisfied with what I do as an educator.”

FROM BEETHOVEN TO BUILDING HOUSES, THERE ISN’T MUCH RACHAEL TURNER CAN’T ACHIEVE WHEN SHE PUTS HER MIND TO IT.

Five years after buying a run down old Queenslander in South Brisbane and flipping it for a tidy profit, the building and construction entrepreneur has quickly become the face of home renovations.

With a Bachelor of Music from the Queensland Conservatorium and 10 years experience running a music school, the classical pianist traded it all in to realise her childhood dream of working in construction.

From that first old Queenslander, Rachael began seeking out other derelict properties before eventually building and renovating homes for other people, which was when Front Porch Properties was born.

With a successful business and ever-growing portfolio of lifestyle magazine features to her name, Rachael decided it was time to formalise her qualifications and enrolled in a Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) funded  Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) through TAFE Queensland.

Since then, her business has gone from strength-to-strength.

With a passion for classic and timeless homes with a twist of Americana, Rachael is already making waves in the industry as a builder with an eye for detail and artistic flair.

“I really believe I was born to be doing the work I do now,” she said.

“I love the construction industry and I am committed to contribute to the industry the best way I can.”

“I’ve always believed in building the life you love, not working for someone else to build theirs.”

With a Queensland Building and Construction Commission licensed construction business, and personal builder’s licence under her belt, Rachael’s eyes are now set on a more personal project, providing aid to overseas building projects.

“I want to be, not just a successful builder, but one that gives back and makes an impact in the lives of others.”
