containers to find one that is an exact match. Open the two containers to see whether they were correctly matched. Do the same for all the containers. Talk about the importance of our ears and all the wonderful things we can hear. Be sensitive to any children with hearing loss.

My Ear Book

Suppliesreproducible pp. 8 and 9, card stock, paper, stapler, glue, crayons or markers, scissors

Before class, make copies of pages 8 and 9, one of each per child. Copy page 8 onto cardstock and page 9 onto paper. Make a book for each child. Cut around the book and fold on the broken line. To make the inside pages, fold two half sheets of paper in half. Place these inside the folded ears with all folded edges together. Using the ear book as a pattern, cut around the edges of the blank paper so the inside pages are also ear-shaped. Open and staple on the fold. If you have mostly younger children, you’ll probably want to cut out the eight pictures before class.

God gave us ears so we can hear all kinds of sounds. Let’s make a book to remind us of all the wonderful things we can hear. Be sensitive to any children with hearing loss.

Give each child an assembled book and eight pictures. Ask the children to color each picture and decide where to glue the pictures in their books. Talk about the pictures while the children work.

• What sounds do these animals make? Let the children demonstrate the sounds.

• What sounds do people make?

• What sounds do cars and trucks make?

• What sounds do you hear at a playground?

• What sounds do fire trucks make? Airplanes?

• The music note reminds us of music. What is your favorite song you like to listen to?

• The picture of the Bible reminds us to listen to God’s Word. What are some of your favorite Bible stories you like to listen to?

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY?

Bible Story: Jonah Runs Away

SuppliesBible, prepared visuals from the Unit Overview: boat, fish, and city backgrounds (optional: Bible-times costume)

Before class, prepare the visuals. The Unit Overview suggests different ways to use the visuals. Arrange for one of the children to portray Jonah. If possible, provide a Bible-times costume for the child to wear.

Have your Bible open to Jonah 1.

A long time before Jesus was born, the Bible tells us that there was a big city named Nineveh. Show the city background. This city was full of people who did not know about God. They did many terrible things. God planned to destroy this city unless the people changed. He chose Jonah to go to Nineveh and tell the people His plan.

Why did God choose Jonah for this important job? Because Jonah was a prophet. A prophet is someone who tells people messages from God. God needed someone to deliver this special message to the people living in Nineveh. Remove the city background.

Ask the child portraying Jonah to stand up, shaking his head no. Jonah did not like the people of Nineveh. He wanted God to destroy them. Jonah did not want to obey God. He decided to run away. Have Jonah run in place.

Jonah thought that if he went far away from Nineveh, God could not find him. Show the boat background. Jonah pretends to climb into the boat. So Jonah got on a boat that was going far away. He went down in the bottom of the boat to sleep. Jonah curls up as if sleeping.

While Jonah was sleeping, God sent a terrible storm. The sailors were very frightened. They thought the boat was going to break in half. Everyone tried to save the boat. They threw boxes into the water hoping to make the boat lighter, but that didn’t help. The sailors prayed to their own gods, but that didn’t help either. Nothing they did helped. The boat was still rocking back and forth and up and down all at the same time!

Where was Jonah? He was still sleeping! The captain of the boat woke Jonah up.

“Get up and pray,” yelled the captain. “Maybe your god will listen and save us!” Jonah sits up, then stands up. Jonah got up and said, “My God made the sky, the land,

and the sea. I am running away from Him because I do not want to obey Him. My God made this storm.”

The storm grew worse. The waves grew higher and washed over the boat. Jonah looked over the side of the boat. “If you throw me into the sea, the storm will stop,” said Jonah.

None of the sailors wanted to hurt Jonah, so they tried to row the boat back to land. Still the storm grew worse. Soon the boat would break in half and they all might die.

Finally, they threw Jonah into the sea. Jonah pretends to jump into the water and sink. The storm stopped! The waves were calm. The boat gently rocked in the water. Remove the boat background.

What happened to Jonah? God had a plan. As Jonah was falling down to the bottom of the sea, God sent a big fish to swallow him. Show the fish background. Jonah pretends to get into the fish and sits down. Jonah stayed in the stomach of the big fish for three days and three nights.

Jonah had listened to what God wanted him to do, but he did not obey. Jonah tried to run away, but God knew exactly where he was! Jonah was right when he said that God caused the storm. Next week, we’ll find out what happened to Jonah.

Story Review: Where Is Jonah?

Suppliesnone

Let’s learn a song that will help us remember the story of Jonah. Teach children the first verse of “Where Is Jonah?” along with the motions.

“Where Is Jonah?”(Tune: “Are You Sleeping?”)Where is Jonah? (put one hand over eyes as if looking)Where is Jonah? In a boat! In a boat! (sway back and forth)What is Jonah doing? (raise both arms as if questioning)What is Jonah doing?Running from God. (run in place)Running from God.

Sing the song several times. In between each time, ask the following questions:

• What did God ask Jonah to do? (go to Ninevah and tell the people about His plan)

• What is a prophet? (a person who tells people messages from God)

• Why didn’t Jonah obey God? (Jonah didn’t like the people in Nineveh. He thought God should destroy them.)

• What did Jonah do instead of going to Nineveh? (He got on a boat to go the other way.)

• What happened while Jonah was sleeping? (God sent a big storm.)

• What happened when Jonah was thrown into the sea? (The storm stopped.)

• What did God plan to happen to Jonah when he was thrown into the sea? (God sent a big fish to swallow him.)

Bible Memory: I Hear an Echo!

SuppliesBible

Bible Words: “Now change your lives and start doing good and obey the LORD your God” (Jeremiah 26:13).

Our Bible words tell us to do good and obey God. Turn to Jeremiah 26:13 in your Bible and read it aloud. Break the verse into short phrases and ask the children to echo each phrase as you say it. Do this two or three times. Then explain that an echo is no louder than the original sound. As you say the phrases again, vary your speaking level from a whisper to a shout. Remind the children to be good listeners and copy what you say and how you say it.

• Did Jonah hear what God wanted him to do? (yes)

• Did he obey God? (no)

• How can you do good and obey God? (find out what the Bible says, obey my parents and teachers, do those things I know God wants me to do, don’t do those things I know God doesn’t want me to do)

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME?

Uh-oh!

Suppliesreproducible pp. 10–12, scissors

Before class, cut apart the pictures from pages 10–12.

Show children the pictures. Each of these pictures shows someone disobeying or something that happened because someone disobeyed. Show the pictures one at a time. Ask for volunteers to demonstrate and/or tell what might happen to the people who disobeyed in each picture. Ask the children to tell what a parent or teacher might say or do as a result of these acts.

• When you disobey your parents or teachers, how do you feel? (sad, bad)

• What usually happens to you when you disobey your parents or teachers? (get a time-out, can’t watch TV or play a computer game)

There are consequences for not obeying. That means that when you don’t obey, something will happen. Maybe you won’t always see what happens, or maybe you won’t always get into trouble, but something will happen. And, of course, God wants you to obey your parents and teachers and Him!

Choose and Do

Suppliesreproducible p. 10–12, scissors

Before class, cut apart the pictures from pages 10–12.

Each of these pictures shows someone disobeying or something that happened because someone disobeyed.

Place the pictures facedown on a table or the floor. Ask a child to choose one of the pictures and turn it over. The child tells how she would obey in that situation. Compliment the children for their good ideas. Repeat the activity until every child has had a turn. Then ask the following questions:

• Why is it sometimes hard to obey your parents when they tell you not to eat any junk food before dinner? (because I really want something good to eat, because I’m really hungry)

• Why is it sometimes hard to obey your teacher when she tells you to listen and not talk to your friends? (because my teacher is boring, because I’d rather be talking to my friends)

Our Bible words remind us that God wants us to obey Him. He knows what’s best for us. He knows we’ll be happy when we obey.

WHAT CAN I DO TO PLEASE GOD?

Listen and Tell

Suppliesnone

God has given us good ears for listening. Let’s see how well we can listen today. Play the game Telephone. Have the children sit in a circle. Whisper a sentence about obeying, such as “I choose to obey when my mom asks me to help,” or “I choose to obey by not fighting with my brother.” The child who hears the message then whispers it to the child on his right. This continues around the circle until the sentence is whispered into the teacher’s ear. The teacher repeats what she heard and tells whether or not the sentence is correct. As time permits, let a volunteer start a new sentence about obeying around the circle.

God has given us good ears for listening. We can listen to our parents and obey. We can listen to God’s Word and obey it too. Our Bible words remind us that God wants us to do good things and obey Him. Let’s ask God to help us listen and obey.

Model a prayer something like this: God, I choose to obey You. I will listen to Your Word and obey. Encourage each child to pray, but don’t force anyone to pray. Close the prayer time, thanking God for ears that can hear good things to do.
