Pollution and Conservation

There are many kinds of pollution. Air, water, and land can be polluted. Some ofthe pollution is caused by nature, such as floods, forest fires, and volcanoes. People arethe major cause of pollution. We pollute the air with our cars, homes, and factories. Wepollute the water by dumping garbage and chemicals in the water. We pollute the soilwith chemicals and garbage. We harm the land by cutting down trees in the forest, especially to build roads and new houses without careful planning and thinking.

All people need water to drink and to make plants grow. Rivers and lakes arepolluted when sewage or garbage is dumped into the water. Plants and animals diebecause of the pollution in the water. Other pollution in water is caused by oil spills. The oil often stays on top of the water. It covers the beaches and land. It gets on thefish, birds, and animals that live in, on, and around the water.

Particulates are tiny bits of liquid or solid matter that get in the air. Cars andfactories put particulates in the air, and this makes the air looks gray and smoggy.Usually the wind helps the air pollutants to move around, but when the air doesn’tmove, pollutants stay in the air. Some people cannot go outside when the air is very bad.

The only way to save our environment is to end pollution. How can you stoppollution? How do we protect our environment?

Conservation is one way to protect our environment. Conservation is the wisemanagement and protection of our environment. We can control water pollution by notcreating as much waste and by proper disposal of sewage and garbage. We can take careof recreation land by cleaning up after ourselves and not causing more pollution.Carpooling and public transportation will help reduce air pollution.

Recycling is a type of conservation. Recycling is reusing items over again or in anew way. Recycling can help us conserve our natural resources.

1)a) Label the pictures with the expressions from the box

b) What are the effects of pollution on the environment and on the people?

Look at the labeled pictures and complete the table:

headache Hole in the ozone layer

smog Disease / sickness

Chemical reaction

Skin rash

burn Breathing problem

Acid rain stomachache deafness weakness

Effects of pollution on people Effects of pollution on the environment

2)a) Now, with your partner read text1 and text 2 and find out the causes and the effects of each type of pollution

Land pollution / water pollution / air pollution / noise

TYPES OF POLLUTION

Because factories release fumes, the air people

breathe  gets polluted. Other well‐known

effects of fumes are smog, acid rain and holes

in the ozone layer.

Living in noisy overcrowded towns has become

dangerous because everyday exposure to noise

can cause headache, earaches and may lead to

deafness.
