Ninth Grade Research Paper

Overview● Choose a topic → you will research a current social issue that teens face● Research your topic → you will use the library’s online databases to find

information about your topic● Cite your research → you will use Easy Bib to create a bibliography of your

sources● Write → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, Problem,

Solution● Present → you will present your research in a creative way

Topics

You will use your own ideas, a class brainstorm, and topic lists from the library databases to help you select which current social issue related to teens you would like to write about. There are many possible topics, so feel free to explore any idea that comes to mind to see if it will work for this project. See page __ for more detailed information about using the databases to choose a topic.

The PaperThe paper will be divided into three sections: the proposal, a problem section, and a solution section. Each section will be turned in and graded separately. You will also earn grades for the research process, the use of Easy Bib, and the use of correct MLA format.

1. Introduction/Proposal: This paragraph will be written and turned in before you start your research. This paragraph will include:

o Why you chose this topico What you already know about the topico What you want to find out in your researcho Where will you look to find your information (By choosing a topic, you have

probably already used two credible databases: Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center and/or EBSCO Explora)

2. Problem section: This section will include a thesis statement that has a clear focus and three reasons why your topic is a problem that teens face. You will find examples to support each reason, and then explain your examples.

This section of your paper will answer the question: Why is __________ [your topic] a problem for teens? Give three reasons.

3. Solution section: This section will include a thesis statement that has a clear focus and three solutions to the problem. You will find examples to support each solution, and then explain your examples.

This section will answer the question: What are three potential solutions for ___________ [your topic]?

4

Page 5: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

4. Research: A minimum of three sources are required. Two of your sources should be articles from the library databases. Your third source may also be from a database, but may come from a credible website, a book, an interview, or any other credible source. You may not use three different articles from the same website as your three sources.

5. Works Cited: You will cite your research in three ways: by entering the sources into Easy Bib, by including parenthetical citations in your paragraphs, and by printing out a Works Cited page for each section of the paper.

6. MLA Format: Each section of the paper will be presented in Modern Language Association (MLA) format. This format includes meeting the specifications for font, spacing, assignment heading, running header, in-text citations, and Works Cited. You will be given directions and examples for how to follow these guidelines.

The Presentation

The final step of the project will require you to present your findings in a creative way to an authentic audience. This step means that your audience will benefit from being exposed to your research. Because you are researching and presenting an issue relevant to teens, you want to be sure that your peers have access to all your hard work. You may do this in any way you wish. Some ideas for the presentation include (but are not limited to):

*a brochure to be displayed in the main office or the nurses’ office*a PSA announcement*a presentation to the HEART team*a Google Drive presentation*an article for the Fordian newspaper*any other idea that you come up with that is approved

Introduction/Proposal Paragraph Example

I chose to do my project on cyberbullying. I chose this topic because it is an extremely relevant issue

that teens face today. I know that some teens have gone so far as to commit suicide as a result of

cyberbullying. Cyberbullying occurs online through sites such as Facebook and through millions of text

messages sent each day around the world. I want to know whether there is any current legislation being

developed that would make cyberbullying illegal. If so, I am very curious as to how this type of bullying would

be monitored. I also want to learn about some strategies that teens could use to stop or prevent cyberbullying

from occurring. To find information I am going to conduct online research through reliable databases. I will

definitely check out the Anti-defamation League’s website and I may even talk to some teens who have either

experienced bullying or been bullies themselves.

ONLINE RESEARCH TIPS

The goal of online searching is to use search technology to return as few, highly-relevant articles as possible to limit the deeper reading required after your initial search is complete. A search that returns 60 highly-focused articles is better than one that returns 3,000+.

Below are some tips for conducting successful online research using the Haverford Research Databases and the Google Drive Web Research feature.

Key Word Searching Tips

1. Develop a list of numerous key words related to your topic. Since online searches are only as good as the key words driving the search, using varied key words will return better results.

Example: Topic = BullyingKeywords = Bullying, Cyberbullying, Cybercrime, Sexting, Social Aggression, Harrassment, School, Teens

Example: Topic = Teen DepressionKeywords: teen depression; adolescent depression; depression in teens; mood disorders in teens; problems caused by depression in teens; treating teens for depression; youth depression

Changing the wording of your searches can usually help you find more information.

2. Boolean Search: a type of search in which you combine key words with operators such as AND, OR, or NOT. This type of search will allow you to expand (OR), focus (AND) or limit (NOT) your search by combining keywords.

23

Page 24: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

Haverford Research Database Advanced Search Tips

1. Click the “Advanced” icon next to the search bar to refine your searches by date, search option, and other parameters.

Opposing Viewpoints Advanced Search Window

Explora Advanced Search Window

2. Search terms can be applied as keywords (all text), subjects, titles, author and more. Limiting terms as a subject search will likely return more relevant articles.

3. The “PDF Full Text” checkbox will limit your database search to those articles with immediate, free, online access via Haverford’s subscription. This option is recommended.

4. The “Peer Reviewed” checkbox will further limit your search to journals that are strictly academic in nature. This option will exclude popular magazines and newspapers (e.g. Time, Newsweek). This option is optional depending on your goals.

24

Page 25: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

5. The publication date options will allow you to limit your search to more recently published articles. A search within the last 5 - 10 years will likely yield more current research depending on topic.

Example: The below example combines the search terms “Bullying” OR “Cyberbullying” as Subject terms. The search limits the results to full text PDF, peer-reviewed journals published in the last 10 years.

Example: Advanced Explora Subject Search

Notice that this option produces fewer articles AND more specific results. Try out a variety of search terms and options!

Evaluating Websites - How do you know if the site is a useful source? It can be difficult to tell at first glance if a website is a legitimate source of information, or just the opinion of a random Internet user. To make sure you are only using accurate, credible websites for this project, keep the following issues in mind:

Author or ProducerWho is the author? What other books and articles have they written? What have other authors written about the author? In the case of many websites, the producer of the information is not an individual author but an organization or institution. The domain address of a web site can provide clues to the type of organization that produced it. For example:

● .org for nonprofit organizations

● .gov for U.S. government sites

● .edu for colleges and universities

● .com for commercial sites

Typically, you will find the most credible information on .org, .gov, and .edu sites. Sites the end in .com can contain helpful information, but be careful that the site is not selling a product or service.

Bias and ObjectivityBias means a person has a preference for a particular viewpoint or idea. Objectivity means that a person is presenting neutral information about the topic.

Look closely at the writing. Is the author considering the various sides of an issue, while making a reasoned case for a particular point of view? Or is the writing merely expressing the author's subjective bias, with no evidence and reasoned argumentation to back it up? All writing is biased to some extent, but is the author making a reasonable effort to be objective and fair? Is the purpose to inform and persuade the reader, or merely to express a personal opinion without regard to reason and evidence? You should avoid using any sources that seem biased.

Support and DocumentationCan you tell where the author gathered the information? Is the writing based on first-hand observation? Interviews? Other books, articles or web sites? Are references (i.e. footnotes, endnotes and/or a bibliography) provided? Are the references clear and accurate so you can locate the referenced sources in the library or on the Internet?

High-quality information sources don’t always include formal references, but there should be some evidence to that shows where the author or producer found the information on the site.

Currency and TimelinessWhen was the information published, created and/or last updated? With books, magazines and journals the date of publication is easy to find. When considering a web

29

Page 30: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

site, check to see if it has been updated recently. The date can usually be found by scrolling to the bottom of the page. Although a recent update to the site does not necessarily prove that the information is current, it is a good starting point. Your goal should be to use information for this project that has been updated, produced, or written within the last five years. Be cautious about information that is 10 years old or older - it may not represent the latest research studies.

GLOSSING YOUR RESEARCH

Now it’s time to read your research. Remember, you need to make sure you have enough

information for both your Problem and Solution BEP. Make sure you can find three pieces of

evidence to discuss how big of a problem your issue is as well as three pieces of evidences that

provide solutions or ways of dealing and/or treating your issue. As you read, GLOSS your

research. You will need to show your teacher exactly what you will be using in your essays,

and will graded before you begin writing. You will need to show that you’ve glossed at least

three sources. Remember, glossing means highlight, underline, and interact with your text.

You can do this in several ways.

By hand: (you will need to physically hand in or show this to your teacher to get a grade)

1. There are t-charts in this packet that you can use to record by hand what you will use

from each of your sources (see examples on the following pages).

2. You can also print your articles and gloss by hand with your highlighter and pen. Please

do not make your notes with a highlighter.

3. You can also hand write your own bulleted list on show it to your teacher. Be sure to

include the names of the sources you used. Remember, you need to prove that you’ve

glossed at least three sources.

Electronic: (you should share your document with your teacher over Google Drive)

1. You can copy and paste your articles in one Google Doc called “My Sources”. Then

simply use the “Comments” and/or underlining/bold/highlighting features to show your

33

Page 34: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

teacher how you will use the information. After you’re done, you can simply share your

“My Sources” document with your teacher electronically. For example see the following.

Above the Stress

Learn How to Manage It

Dealing with pressures and stress in high school can be hard sometimes. The pressure to make

friends, earn good grades, excel in sports or other activities, deal with crammed schedules, establish

and maintain relationships, and navigate an occasionally difficult home life can feel overwhelming at

times. Dealing with all of this can mess with your self-esteem, outlook on life, mood, and health. The

next thing you know, you’re feeling stressed, or worse.

2. The same as you can write your own bulleted list, you can type your own bulleted list.

Be sure to include the names of the sources you used. Remember, you need to prove that

you’ve glossed at least three sources. When you’re done, share this document with your

teacher.

How to Cite an Article from EasyBib in Your Paper

It is essential that you give credit to every single source you use in your paper. Even when you are NOT using direct quotes, you must cite your sources. For example, let’s say your paper is about anxiety and you read an article that says exercising is one way to lessen anxiety. Great! You can use this in your solution BEP, and you can easily put this in your own words - no need to use a direct quote. However, you still need to let the reader know that this was not your original idea. You found this solution from an reliable source that you researched. This project is about you learning how to find reliable sources. It’s about reading research and learning how to put things in your own words. Even if your own experience tells you that exercise relieves anxiety, you still need research to back up this assertion. Now that you have found the proof in your article, you must give credit to the source, or else this is a form of plagiarism. Let’s assume Susie Smith wrote your article. Here’s how your parenthetical citation should look:

A recent study shows that a regular exercise routine can help to reduce stress (Smith).

If you find that you cannot paraphrase and so will need to use a direct quote, your citation will look exactly the same. For example:

“A recent study by the Philly is Amazing Institute shows that teens who engage in at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week have significantly lower levels of anxiety than those who do not” (Smith).

Now that you know how important it is to cite your research, see directions below for exactly how to cite all of your sources.

38

Page 39: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

Open your EasyBib list. Once you have your list open, find the source you want to cite and look to the very left - in other words, look at the very first part of your citation. If your citation has an author, this will be the author’s last name. Simply put the last name only in parentheses at the end of your sentence exactly as shown in the previous Susie Smith example:

A recent study shows that a regular exercise routine can help to reduce stress (Smith). If your citation doesn’t have an author, this will be the title of your article, or the name of your source. See below:

This is what you need to put at the end of the sentence you are citing. So your sentence should look like this:

A recent study shows that a regular exercise routine can help to reduce stress (“Stress - Above the Influence”).

The same goes for using a direct quote:

“A recent study by the Philly is Amazing Institute shows that teens who engage in at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise three times a week have significantly lower levels of anxiety than those who do not” (“Stress - Above the Influence”).

The bottom line: Whatever is listed first in your citation on your list, is what goes in the parentheses at the end of the sentence you are citing in your BEP. In most cases this will be either the last name of the author, or

39

Page 40: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

the title of the article or web page. In cases where there is no author or article title, then you will list the name of your source (i.e., the name of the website, database, newspaper, magazine, book, etc.).

Problem BEP Format – (This must be typed in five short paragraphs. See sample on reverse side.)

1. Thesis Statement-must include focus, transition and three problems/three reasons why this is a problem.Bullying is a serious problem facing teens because it can distract from schoolwork, impact students’ physical and mental health, and cause problems that carry on into adulthood.

2. First reasonOne reason bullying is a serious problem is that it can have a negative impact on a student’s schoolwork.

Problem BEP - Bullying

Bullying is a serious problem facing teens because it can distract from schoolwork, impact students’

physical and mental health, and cause problems that carry on into adulthood.

One reason bullying is a serious problem is that it can have a negative impact on a student’s

schoolwork. Approximately 160,000 U.S. students miss school each day because they are afraid of facing a

bully (“We Can Stop Bullies!”). Education is the key to a successful life. If students are not going to school

because they are afraid of being bullied, they are losing out on an education. This could keep them from

graduating from high school, going to college, or getting a good job.

Another reason bullying is dangerous is that it can damage the physical and/or mental health of the

victim. Studies show that people who are abused by their peers are at risk for mental health problems, such as

low self-esteem, stress, depression, or anxiety. They may also think about suicide more” ("Dealing with

Bullying"). Bullying is dangerous because if teens are bullied repeatedly, they may loss confidence in

themselves, become depressed, or even kill themselves.

Another reason bullying is a serious problem is that it affects teens long after their teen years.

Experts believe "unrelenting, daily hostilities that maybe escalate to threats or actual aggression can be on par

with torture and child abuse” (Kornblum).

Although some believe bullying is just a natural part of growing up, bullying needs to be taken

seriously. Victims of bullying will often feel the impact of bullying for years after the bullying stops. Bullying

is a serious problem facing teens, and it must be addressed.

HOW TO INSERT A RUNNING HEADER

44

Page 45: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

According to MLA format, you must have a running header. The header goes in the top right-hand side of your paper and includes your last name and the page number. Follow the directions below:

1. Go to the “Insert” tab at the top of your screen and highlight “Page number”. Choose the first option to the right of the arrow that shows the number in the right-hand corner of the

pages and includes page 1.

2. Place your cursor in front of the number 1, type your last name and then a space. There should be one space between

your last

name and the page number. See the following:

45

Page 46: Typically, you will find the most credible information on ... Web viewWrite → you will write your research paper in three sections: Proposal, ... bullying, teen bullying, cyberbullying;

3. Highlight your name and the page number and change the font from the Google Docs default: size 11, Ariel to MLA format: size 12, Times New Roman.

This shows that you’re name and page number are in the actual header. If you try to

manually insert this yourself, it will not line up correctly and you will get points off for MLA formatting.

Eating Disorders- The Solution

Although many groups have been trying to reduce the frequency with which eating disorders appear in

America, the rate continues to increase.  Some ways that people can contribute to the solution are to seek

treatment for someone who has an eating disorder, to educate teens about healthy ways to live, and to teach

people to love themselves the way they are.

One way that people can help to resolve this problem is to obtain professional help for a family member

or friend with an eating disorder.  “Secondary prevention” is when a person prevents an eating disorder from

getting out of control (“Weight in America”).  To successfully recover from an eating disorder, people need the

help of physicians, nutrition specialists, and counselors (Graves 44). In order for teens with eating disorders to

get the help they need, the concerned person has to consult a professional, be understanding, and treat them

respectfully.  If teens know that their audience is understanding, then they are more likely to talk about their

problem, get proper help, and fully recover.

The next way that people can help prevent eating disorders is to educate teens about healthy ways to

live.  “Successful weight loss or weight control is possible once one learns the tools for normal eating. Chronic

dieting does not work…” (Frissel & Harney).  Instead of binge eating and impulsively exercising to make up for

it, or avoiding eating, teens should be taught how to eat healthily, and exercise the way that works for them.  If

teens can accomplish these goals, then they can maintain their weight, or even lose weight if needed, without

exposing themselves to all the dangers of eating disorders.

The last way to prevent eating disorders is to encourage people to love themselves the way they are.

Studies have shown that about 81 percent of ten-year-olds are afraid of becoming fat, and that 46 percent of 53

Student 2

children between the ages of nine and eleven go on diets (NEDA Feeding Hope).  Instead of teaching children

that they should strive to be skinny, they should be encouraged to accept themselves the way they are.  Altered

images in magazines and on television do nothing to help with this “ideal” body image that lots of people

visualize.  If teens are better able to accept their size and weight, then the frequency of eating disorders in teens

is likely to go down, and fewer lives would be at risk.

Overall, there are many different factors that cause teens to develop eating disorders, and these disorders

are a condition that would be nearly impossible to eliminate.  However, a few steps that people can take to help

reduce eating disorders are seeking help for people with eating disorders, educating teens about how to live a

healthy life, and encouraging teens to love themselves the way they are.
