LOOKING FOR A NEW HOME: Bob Akerman brandishes a shaman's rattle, one of many native artifacts that will soon be housed in a log museum being constructed on his Fulford property. Driftwood photo by i»n Now*

Pioneer builds home for collection of artifacts Salt Spring resident Bob Akerman has

a strong connection to native life, and through the years has collected many native artifacts. So many, in fact, that he is opening a native museum on his Fulford-Ganges Road property.

By IAN NOBLE Driftwood Staff Writer

"Most of my artifacts are found in this area and I wanted a place to keep them. Just to show the history of the area."

Akerman was heavily influenced in his younger days by his grandmother who lived across the street from him and was the daughter of a hereditary Cowichan chief.

His grandmother used to spend a lot of time with him, telling many stories of the native way of life before the white man came. "Stories that her father and grandfather told her. I have a pretty good knowledge of those days."

He said many stories hold prominent places in his memory, particularly those relating how close natives were to nature. "I felt that way when I was young and used to travel with her. I felt very close to the land."

Akerman said natives lived in the Fulford area for as many as 10,000 years. They left after the white man came and went to live on reserves. Artifacts from Fulford make up the bulk of Akerman's museum pieces.

There are so many artifacts Akerman has collected to put in the museum, they are "just to numerous to mention."

Natives believed a shaman's rattle, used to cure someone who was sick, had strong power in it. They would dance and

rattle it, sometimes putting the patient in a trance, said Akerman.

Shamans also used a soul catcher, a carved bone with a hole through it, to catch evil spirits some people were thought to possess.

Masks used for ceremonial dances will also be displayed in Akerman's museum. When a chief put on a potlatch for other chiefs, he would hire professional dancers. They had masks and danced to the music of a drum, providing entertainment for the visiting chiefs.

Other artifacts that will be housed in Akerman's museum include arrowheads and spearheads, stone tools such as hammers, chisels, and clubs, and native copper jewellery which was carved with designs and worn around necks like necklaces.

"They valued copper very highly in those days."

Natives who lived in the Fulford area were from an tribe near East Saanich and they left Salt Spring for a reserve there. Natives living in the Burgoyne Bay area were members of the Cowichan tribe, and were given a reserve in Cowichan Bay to live on.

Akerman had intended to build an Indian long house on his property like the ones natives used for potlatches, but a log house is safer and "it can be a tribute to the first settlers on the island."

The log cabin he is building is similar to the one his grandfathers Gyves and Akerman built in the early 1860s on Salt Spring. "It is long gone now but the people that followed all had log cabins. There was no lumber."

Akerman hopes to have the museum open by this summer.

ISLAND LIVING MP addresses Galiano town hall meeting

Lynn Hunter, member of parliament for Saanich and the Islands, was guest speaker at a town hall meeting held here recently. Hunter, a member of the federal government's travelling constitutional inquiry, had six days before, finished six months of intensive meetings in all parts of the country — the latest being the five weekend meetings held in major Canadian cities.

It was a gruelling experience for all members of the Commission according to Hunter, but as a supporter of a unified Canada, she felt the process was well worth the time and effort expended.

After Hunter's report, the 30 or so people present were given the chance to ask questions of their parliamentary representative — forestry issues, the environment and the economy were all popular points for questions and discussion.

Quartet featured here A Sunday afternoon concert by the

Pro Nova Ensemble took place in the Carruthers Studio in North Galiano on March eighth. Under the leadership of Hans Karl Pitz (viola), the other instrumentalists were Marcelle Nokony (violin), Janine Oye (clarinet) and Heather Hay (cello). The four played a program of pieces for, or adapted for these instruments.

Selections by Baroque composers were featured as well as modern works by Manuel Ponce and Jean Francaix. In his informative and often amusing background material for each of the pieces, leader Piltz explained that the lack of a piano somewhat restricted the repertoire available to them. Most pieces written for the combination of instruments during the rococo and romantic periods of the 19th century called for piano accompaniment.

Tea and coffee were served after the concert. At this time the audience got a chance to meet the musicians and to explore the host's beautiful garden with its view of Trincomali Channel.

More Concerts North Galiano Hall will be the venue

for a concert by La Guitara Latina on Friday evening, March 20. Members of the group are: Stephen Boswell (virtuoso Spanish guitar and electric classical guitar), Harriet Quint (dynamic percussion) and Mark Rogers (extraordinary electric and acoustic bass).

Their repertoire includes dramatic and compelling heel tapping falsettos of electric nuova flamenco (rumba, soleares, malagenas and sevillanas), plus the hot rhythms of the samba and choro from Brazil, the sensual swaying of Uruguay's Milanga and the passionate intrigue of the Argentinian Tango.

Concert time is 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children, and will be available at the door or can be ordered ahead of time by phoning this writer at 539-2294. Light refreshments will be served during the intermission.

Wind Quintet Another concert of chamber music

will be held on Galiano Sunday afternoon, April 26. The musicians are a Wind Quintet from the Vancouver String Players. They will play selections by San Saens, Poulenc, Mozart and Arnold. The concert will be a benefit for the Bodega Ridge Purchase Fund.

Sale of modern antiques North Galiano Fire Auxiliary's

popular fund raising event "The Sale of Modern Antiques" is set for Saturday, April 18 (Easter weekend).

Householders are asked to remember this event when spring cleaning — that seldom used platter, the sabre saw you no longer need, the fabric you never got made into a suit — all are saleable, all will bring a few extra dollars to your fire department. With the funds raised your auxiliary can keep fuel in the fire vehicles, and equip them for effective fire protection.

The money will also help to buy that new fire truck when it is required. A "nest egg" collected will make the down payment, and keep the interest rates down on money still owing when a new truck has to be bought, therefore reducing the tax burden for all.

From Page Bl was purchased from MacMillan Bloedel last fall. In January of this year the final route survey was completed. The clearing of brush along the rite-of-way was completed in February.

Invitation to tender was made on March 5, with the awarding scheduled set for March 26.

Construction is to begin on March 30, and should be complete May 1. Installation of the cable in its housing pipe will be done in June and the whole system should be in service by October 1.

Ditching of the cable will be done with a backhoe according to B.C.Tel's John Innes. The cable is to be buried about one metre deep in soil, and not less than half that depth over solid rock. The trench dug for the cable should be about one foot wide. Set in sand, the cable will have about one foot above it a colourful plastic identification strip to warn of its presence for those who may at some later time be digging in the area. The ditch will be filled with overburden and its presence identified with discrete signs.

B.C.Tel is proud of its recent environmental record and the awards it has received, made much of its accomplishments in these fields at the Galiano meeting.

A suggestion from the Galiano Conservancy that they be allowed to operate managed forestry on the portions of D.L. 63 not used for the pipeline is being considered along with other uses for the

A company video showing construction techniques in difficult terrain was shown to the Galiano audience.

ISLAND LIVING

An aristocracy... is like a chicken with its head cut off; it may run about in a lovely way, but in fact it's dead. Nancy Mitford

Ms. Mitford is right, of course. Kings and Queens and Dukes and Duchesses would make no sense at all in a rational world.

But then, when's the last time anybody mistook Earth for a rational planet? This is a place where religious leaders can solemnly order the murder of man

for writing a book. It's a place where a guy can earn $5 million U.S. a year for throwing a

leather-covered sphere past another guy 66 feet away. This is a place that picked Brian Mulroney to run Canada. Twice. So perhaps it's no surprise that Ivor Spencer's enterprise is doing swimming

ly well, thank yew veddy much. Mister Spencer runs a school in London, England. A school for butlers.

Gone the way of brontosaurus A person might be forgiven for thinking that butlers had gone the way of the

brontosaurus, the dodo and the Edsel. Back in the 1930s there were 30,000 of the creatures in Britain alone, but World War II cost Britain mightily, and butlers — an expensive appendage during the best of times — began to disappear. By the 1980s there were fewer than a 100 full-time butlers in the United Kingdom.

Now they're coming back. Or so says Ivor Spencer — and he's in a position to know. Mister Spencer's school grooms, hones and places "personal servants" with wealthy households all over the world.

It's not a bad gig. About $50,000 a year with free room and board, a car, a clothing allowance and the chance to serve tea to the rich and famous.

But there's a downside. Rich people are not necessarily nice people — and even when the boss is a 24-carat jerk, the butler is expected to lower his eyes and take it, like a good and loyal servant. A butler is unflinchingly stiff-upper-lipped. His employer can get drunk, shout obscenities, beat the dog and swing naked from the chandeliers but nary a whisper of it will be breathed by his butler.

"We never talk" says Spencer. "That is your death knell as a butler."

No bunch of lickspittle doormats Which is not to say that butlers are a bunch of craven, lickspittle doormats

shuffling and cringing through life. Some of them have immense responsibilities which include everything from balancing the family budget to ironing the morn-either. Indeed, their grace under pressure is legendary.

For instance, the butler of Lord Dunsany in County Meath, Ireland. Back in the 1920s Dunsany Castle was raided and ransacked by the "Black and Tans" — troops of the British government. Lord Dunsany's butler stood unmoved as the soldiers reduced the castle interior to rubble. As they trooped out the smashed front door, the butler intoned "Who shall I say called?"

Down the bannister Then there's the New York mansion story told by Coburg, Ontario's own

Marie Dressier in her autobiography My Own Story. "I was going upstairs to leave my wrap when I noticed a beautifully carved

bannister. / / / don't slide down that, I told myself, I'll die. There was nobody in sight. I took a deep breath and landed in a heap at the foot of the stairs.

Imagine my horror when I saw bearing down upon me the butler, whose frosty hauteur had frozen me when I arrived.

He picked me up and dusted me off without a flicker of expression on his correct countenance, meanwhile murmuring cordially, "Very good miss. Very good indeed. I've always wanted to take a go at it myself!".

ISLAND LIVING

SATURNA I S L A N D ^ " Saturna Island's bicentennial celebra

tion committee met Friday to discuss plans for constructing a replica of the workboat which first charted the island.

By GAIL TRAFFORD Driftwood Correspondent

Plans for the boat are being lofted on the kitchen floor of Bob and Bev Bruce's new house. This entails drawing out a pattern to actual size for use in Bruce's shop.

Any questions about the project can be directed to Jeanne Crerar. Workbees are scheduled for Sunday afternoons. Bob Bruce, John Wisnuck and Bob Constable have committed themselves to this project and would welcome any interested parties to join them.

New recycling chairman Doris Ackerman has been named the

new chairman of Saturna Recycling Committee. Ackerman replaces Bob Bruce who continues to be active on the committee and who is currently in charge of construction to upgrade facilities.

Island mosaic available in poster form

A poster that provides mosaic images of Vancouver Island's forest cover is now available to the public from the British Columbia Forest Service.

On one side of the poster is an image of the island taken from the Landsat 5 satellite, 705 kilometres above the earth. On the other are colour interpretations of the image. These mosaics detail mature and immature forest, natural areas, developed areas, and fresh water.

The satellite images were taken between June and October, 1989.

The poster was prepared by the Forest Services's inventory branch and presented at the recent geographic information systems conferences (GIS '92) in Vancouver.

Copies of the poster will be distributed to schools, industry agencies, environmental groups, and other interested offices.

The poster is available from the Forest Services's district and regional offices, its public affairs branch at 595 Pandora Street, Victoria, and its inventory branch at 1319 Government Street, Victoria.

Music workshop Tobin Stokes led a music workshop

for Saturna Elementary students on March 12.

Stokes brought along his computer and synthesizer. After hearing a short xylophone presentation by the students, Stokes demonstrated how the same music would sound on the synthesizer using different sounds and speeds for the four-part harmony. Students were enthraled by his music magic.

Stokes also played a short excerpt from the theme he is composing for the opening of the B.C. Summer Games.

Child parent interviews Wednesday, March 18 was set aside

for student-led parent teacher interviews at Saturna Elementary. Students had spent time organizing materials and preparing for the interviews. Each child selected a sampling of his or her work from each subject area to show his or her parents.

Interviews began with students showing prepared portfolios to their parents and discussing the work. Then each student led parents to teachers and discussed and or demonstrated progress achieved since the last report.

PROVINCIAL ROUND-UP by Hubert Beyer Synonyms, anyone?

Peeved at the media's portrayal of Liberal leader Gordon Wilson as a whiner, Suzanne Germaine, the Liberal's media coordinator, dropped off a list of "Synonyms For Whine" last week.

"To the Press Gallery," said the accompanying note. "Thought this list might help you in writing next week's batch of news stories and columns!"

Her list comprised cry, mewl, snivel, whimper, bitch, complain, gripe, groan, moan and wail. Those, coincidentally, are the same choices my electronic WordPerfect thesaurus gave me. Still, a nice touch.

No free lunch "There's no such thing as a free lunch,

my friend," W.A.C. Bennett used to say, and now the NDP government is rediscovering the truth of that statement. "We have tough budget targets to meet," Government Services Minister Lois Boone said last week, after axing what has been know as the Hospitality Grants Program which provided partial sponsorship of 120 meal functions attended by cabinet ministers or MLAs last year. To be eligible for a grant of up to $8 per person, the meal had to be held in connection with international, national or provincial conferences, conventions or province-wide sporting events.

By cancelling the program, the government is saving the taxpayers about $140,000 a year.

Jobs, jobs Canwood Furniture Factory of Pentic-

ton was awarded a two-year timber sale licence last week which will enable the firm to add about 70 employees and a second shift.

The company now employs about 130 people. It manufactures ready-to-as-semble pine tables, chairs, beds, shelving and children's furniture.

Also under the Small Business Forest Enterprises Program, Blaeberry Timber Ltd. of Golden has been awarded a one-year timber sale to allow the firm to continue to produce lumber for remanufacturing plants.

Economic recovery A general economic recovery in

British Columbia through the 1990s will be stronger than in central Canada, according to the Investment Dealers Association of Canada.

In it latest outlook, the association says the B.C. economy is maturing through diversification and cashing in on increasing business opportunities in the Pacific Rim.

Budget day May 26 will probably be Black

Thursday for British Columbia taxpayers. That's the day finance minister Glen Clark will bring down the budget.

All indications are that the budget will contain some tax increases to deal with the provincial deficit.

Environment update Western Pulp Inc. was fined $150,000

last week for offences under the Waste Management Act. The conviction followed an investigation by B.C. Environment into the company's pulp mill at Port Alice.

From April through December 1990, the company failed to monitor the discharge of air emissions from its power boiler. And in both January and August 1991, the company discharged effluent in amounts that exceeded allowable levels for total suspended solids.

Although fines imposed by the courts on industrial polluters still fall short of the maximum under the act of $1 million, they have been getting steadily steeper.

Ambulance services expanded

B.C. Ambulance Service will extend its emergency medical services to three more communities now served by firefighters, Health Minister Elizabeth Cull announced last week.

In Campbell River, Port Alberni and Nelson, where emergency response services are now provided by local firefighters, contracts will not be renewed, allowing for the establishment of the B.C. Ambulance Service in these communities.

Up to half of the full-time positions will be recruited from the ranks of the firefighters, many of whom already possess the necessary skills.

ISLAND LIVING

B. C. Hydro wants old island fridges

Power Smart's refrigerator buy-back program has been expanded to include the Gulf Islands

No matter where people in the Gulf Islands, they are now eligible for a $50 B.C. Hydro grant for turning in that old energy-guzzling second refrigerator.

The Power Smart program has been operating successfully since 1990 in Victoria and five other pilot communities.

So far it has shipped more than 13,000 old "beer and pop" fridges to the continent's largest refrigerator dismantling facility at Annacis Island near Vancouver. Another 2,600 fridges were dismantled by Ridge Meadows Recycling Society.

"These old fridges can easily cost up to $100 a year to run," said Barry Cor-bett, a Duncan-based Hydro marketing representative responsible for the Gulf Islands area. "They are often under-used and therefore waste a lot of electricity that can easily be saved."

The successful pilot program in Victoria exceeded its target of 5,800 old fridges in October, 1990. Corbett said a

new goal for the extended program is to eliminate 4,000 more energy-guzzling fridges in the first year on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

All Gulf Islands residents need do to get rid of their old fridges and receive $50 is call 1-800-663-2274. The fridges will be picked up by a moving contractor and delivered to the Annacis recycling plant.

The Power Smart fridge dismantling facility, operated for Hydro by ARCO B.C., is the largest in North America. It can handle 40,000 refrigerators a year, extracting about 13 tonnes of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) for recycling, and arranging for the steel hulks to be recycled.

Sorenson said the recovery of CFCs used as a coolant, is the first step towards reducing ozone depletion in the earth's atmosphere, DuPont purchases the recaptured CFCs from Hydro, then remanufacturers and sells them as a recycled product.

Refrigerator buy-back is one of 25 Power Smart programs in B.C.
