Direct Democracy

uDemocracy is a form of government that means “rule by the people”.

uDirect Democracies are governments where the people directly impact policy.

u A representativedemocracy is also known as a republic.

u Governed by representativeselected by adult citizens.

u The power of the government is limited by a constitution.

Monarchy

uPower is held by one person who has been born into the ruling family.

uMonarchs may rule for life.

uMany monarchs have constitutions they must follow.

Oligarchy

uCountry is ruled by a small group of wealthy or powerfulpeople.

u In this form of government, the power is held by the rich or elite.

Autocracy

uNo constitution or social structure to limit power

Communism

uGovernment (in the name of the people) controls the whole economy.

uCommunist countries are usually ruled by a strong Communist dictator and the Communist political party.

Socialism

uGovernment takes an active role in controlling the economy.

uProtects the people from private businesses that might take advantage of them.
