ANNOUNCEMENTS

National Science Foundation Fellowships, 1970-71

Each year the National R e search Council advises the National Science Foundation in the selection of candidates for certain of the Foundation 's programs of graduate and post-doctoral fellowships. Panels of prominent scientists are appointed by the Research Council to recommend candidates to the Foundation after a careful review of each applicant's qualifications. In 1969, of a total of 7,746 applicants in both programs, 2 , 059 extremely well-qualified candidates were selected for awards.

Fellowships are offered again this year for advanced study in the basic and applied sciences, the social sciences, and in the history and/or philosophy of science. Awards will not be made in clinical, education, or business fields, in history or social work, nor for work toward medical or law degre es. College seniors, graduate students in a degree program, and persons interested in post - doctoral research are eligible to apply.

Poetry Conclave at Western

The Potter College of Liberal Arts will sponsor a Poetry Conclave at Weste rn on Saturday, November IS, 1969 . The featured speaker will be Dr . Stephen Mooney, editor of th e Tennessee Poetry Journal. Dr. Mooney will take part in a panel discussion in the m o rning on liThe New American and/or Southern Poetry;" will be pres e nt for the luncheo n m eeting at which prizes will be awarded for student poetry; and will read and discuss his own w o rk at 3:00 p.rn. in the afternoon. A num.ber of Southern poe ts and pr ofessors of literature fr orn other unive rsities will be pres ent to read their work and h old discussions with students and interested faculty m e mbers h e r e. The Poetry Conclave is scheduled for November 15 , a Saturday afternoon when there is no football game here, and students and facul ty members are urged to attend. A stitnulating program of real literary merit will be offered!

International Book Project

The International Book Project, Inc., of Lexington, Kentucky, invites th e faculty and students of Western Kentucky University to participate in t h e work of this non - profit organization by contributing books and magazines to be sent to othe r countries.

A receptacle for books and tnagazines, whic h individuals are willing to contribute, will be placed in the Lobby of the Marg ie Helm Library to accomrn.odate donors in depositing books and magazines for the proje ct.

If the donor desires that certain hooks or magazines be sent to a particular country or a particular educational agency in that country, that inform.ation should be attached to the material donated. Many requests from all over the world have been received, and it is hoped that the response at Western will be both generous and continuous.

Murray State University Quintet

The Murray State University Faculty Brass Quintet will present a Guest Recital on Wednesday, November 5, 1969, in Grise Auditorium at 8:00 p. In.

University of Kentucky Press Representative

Mr . Matthew Hodgson, Development Editor of the University Press of Kentucky, will be on campus on Thursday and Friday, November 6-7, to consult with faculty members about scholarly manuscripts or research ideas. He will be available for consultation in Room 108 of the Student Center . Faculty members who wish to see him should make an appointment by calling the office of the Graduate Dean, extension 2597.

On Thursday, November 6, at 2:00 p. m., Mr. Hodgson will meet with interested members of the Ogden College of Science and Technology to discuss publishing problems and possibilities in their areas of interest. This meeting will be in Room 202 of the Thompson Complex, Central Wing.

CAPPS, Mr. Randall (Acting Head, Speech and Theatre) WTote "The Development of Speech Departments at Kentucky Colleges and Universities" for the fall issue of the Kentucky Journal of Communication Arts.

"Sixty -One Ways to Tell About Books" by Dr. Curtis L . ENGLEBRIGHT (Elementary Education) will be published in the November issue of Instructor.

"Dogmatism: A Variable in the Prediction of Student Teaching Performance" by Dr. James S. JOHNSON (Secondary Education) will be published in the October, 1969, issue of Contemporary Education.

MILLER, Dr. Jim Wayne (Foreign Languages) contributed a brief article commenting on similarities between ancient GerIllanic charms and verses by faith healers to the November, 1969, issue of North Carolina Folklore; had short stories included in the October, 1969, issues of Mountain Life and Work and Christian Living; and made contributions to an anthology of North Carolina poets to be published by the Southern Poetry Review.

MISCELLANEOUS FACULTY ACTIVITIES

Drs. S . Reza AHSAN (Geography and Geology), Clifton D. BRYANT (Head , Sociology and Anthropology). and C. Ronald SEEGER (Geography and Geol ogy). and Messrs Louis M. BECK, Michael F. CONWAY, and Richard H. FURLOW (Sociology and Anthropology) attended the meeting of the Kentucky Academy of Science on October 25 at Murray State University. Dr. AHSAN read a paper entitled "Population Distribution on the Ethiopian Plateau"; Dr. BRYANT was elected Chairman of the Sociology Section; Dr. SEEGER read a paper entitled "Subsurface Geology of Kentucky Cryptoexplosion Structures ll ;

Mr. BECK presented a paper on "Undetected Delinquency in the Adolescent Careers of College Students: A Replication of the Nye and Short Studies" and was elected Secretary; Mr. CONWAY presented a paper on !!Initiation Rite Theory: The Maori Case, A Consideration of Alternatives"; and Mr. FURLOW served as Chairman of the Anthropology Section.

BOAZ, Dr . Holland E. (Industrial Education) served as Visiting Professor in a national EPDA Sununer Institut e for Professional Personnel Retiring from Industry at Stout State University at Menomonie. Wisconsin. Dr . Boaz taught Educational Psychology and Educational Evaluation; and, in addition, h e team-taught a third course in Teaching Methods . The purpose of this institute was to prepare personnel who have retired from industrial or military life to teach in a junior college or technical institute where a critical shortage of technically trained teachers exists. Dr. Boaz was one of three professors at the institute which lasted from June 16 to August 22. Dr. Boaz also attended the 2nd Annual Convention of the National Association of Industrial Technology at Texas A & M University on October 16 - 17. Th e theme was "Profiles in Technology."

Drs. C. P. BROWN, Jim Wayne MILLER, and Joseph F. VELEZ (Foreign Languages) attended the annual Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference at Asheville, North Carolina, on October 9-11.

BURKEEN, Dr. Emmett D. (Head , Department of Counselor Education) addressed the Upper Cumberland Personnel and Guidance Association on "New Directions in Counseling" on October 3; attended the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision in Chattanooga on October 12-14 with Drs. Stanley BRUMFIELD, Vernon L. SHEELEY, Messrs Richard CHUBB, Jack FROST, and James McKEE, and Mrs. Juanita DICKSON (O:>unselo r Education); attended the American Personnel and Guidance Association Southern Regional Workshop in Atlanta on October 16-18; served as consultant for the Departm.ent of Student Affairs. Marshall University, Huntington, on October 21; attended a m.eeting of the Kentucky Personnel and Guidance Association in Owensboro on October 29 - 31 with Dr . DeWayne MITCHELL (Counselor Education), the featured conference speaker; and, a long with Dr. Vernon L. SHEELEY (Counselor Education), has prepared a tape entitled liTh e Role of th e Counselor in Career Development, II produced by Dr. Frederick W. HAAS and directed by Mr. Marvin BOWMAN (English and ETV) for presentation on ETV on November 4,5, and 6.

CANN, Dr. Kenneth T. (Economics) spent the s ummer in Brazil where he gathered materials for a continuing study of the Brazilian system of public finance. In his travels he also visited the Economics De partrnent of the Univer sity of Brasilia, of University of Sao Paulo, and o f the School of Business of the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

DAVIS, Dr. James L. (Head, Geography and Geology) and the following membe rs of his department attended the West Lakes Division of the Association of Ame rican Geographers at Urbana, Illinois, on O ctober 16-18: Drs. S. R eza AHSAN , Gerald H. ROMSA, James W. TAYLOR, and Mr . Ronald R. DILAMAR TER.

The annual meeting of the Kentucky Welfare Association was held in Lexington on O ctober 15-17, and the following members of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology attended : Dr. Edward E. DiBELLA and Messrs Tom BYRD, James H. EWALT, Robert KLENK, and Robert NEUROTH.

DOWN ING, Mr. Dero G. (Pres ident) was featured in the Fall Issue of Peabody Views, a lumni publication of George Peabody College for Teachers .

ELLIOT, Dr. Larry P. (Biology) discussed "Th e Reduction of Sodium Tellurite and Selenite by Staphylococcus a ureus , 11 at the Chemistry Serrrinar of Indiana State University, Evansville campu s , on October 16 .

ENGLEBRIGHT, Dr . Curtis L. (Elementary Education) spoke to the Bullitt County chapter of the Internation a l Reading Association on "Providing for Individual Differences in the Classr oom, II on Octobe r 2 3 .

ESTES, Dr. Kenneth A. (Teacher Corps and President of K. E. A.) attended a K. E. A. B oard meeting in Louisville on September 11; represented Western Kentucky University and K. E. A. at the National Conference of Citizenship in Washington on September 15-17 ; attended a meeting of State Education Assoc iation Pr es idents in Washington on Septem.be r 17 - 19; spoke at a General Meeting of Central Kentucky Education Association at Richmond on September 26; attended the Kentucky Council for Children and Youth Delegate Assembly in Lexington on October 3-4; and spoke to Elementary Teachers at the Upper Cumberland Educ ation Association m eeting in Barbourville, Kentucky, on October 10.

FARLEY , Dr. Set h (Director, Jones-Jaggers Laboratory School) spoke to the Adminis t rators of the Ohio County Schools at Ohio County High School, Hartford, on October 25 .

FRANKENHAUSER, Mr. Neil (Art) reports that one of his paintings was selected for inclusion in the national art e xhibition, "Frontal Images III! at Jackson, Mississippi. He will have a one-man show of recent paintings in the Art Departme nt Gall e ry in the base ment of Cherry Hall on November 3 - 14. A painting by him has been selected for purchase in the forthcoming Hunte r Gallery Annual, Chattanooga, Tennessee, November 9 - 30 .

FROST, Mr. Jack (Counselor Education and University High School) has been e l ected preside nt of the Ke ntucky Elementary School Counselors . Along with eight graduate practicum students, he will present a program for the American Personnel and Guidance Assoc iation's national convention in New Orleans o n March 22-26 whe r e the title of the program. will be "Counselor Preparation Via Video - Tape, Role - Playing, and Imme diate Behavioral Feedback. "

GALBRAITH, Dr. Lilyan K. (Horne Economics and Family Living) was guest speaker at the Kentucky School Food Service Conference for District Administrators at Rough River Darn State Park, Falls-of- Rough, on October 14 . Her topic was "Professional Training - - Means to Progress." She also served as consultant in a group discussing "What are Your Management Problems? "

GRINSTEAD, Miss Vera (Library Science) spoke to the Middle Cumberland Education Associatio n Librarians at Somerset, Kentucky. on October 10 where her topic was I1Storytelling and Book Talks. II She also served as President of the Kentucky Library Association during the Convention in Louisville on October 3~ - November 1.

HARRISON, Mr s. Elaine M. (Kentucky Library) recently attended the national meeting of the Am.erican Archivists in Madison. Wisconsin, on October 7-10.

HOWARD, Dr. Mildred (Speech and Theatre) attended the annual meeting of the American Educational Theatre Association in Detroit, Michigan, on August 24 -27. Prior to the convention, she attended some theatre productions in Stratford, Ontario, Canada.

The following members of the Department of Speech and Theatre attended the fall meetings of the Kentucky Association of Comm.unication Arts in Lexington on October 24-25: Drs. Mildred HOWARD and William E. LEONARD, M essrs James L. BROWN, Randall CAPPS, D. Whit COMBS, Paul L. CORTS, Regis O'CONNOR, Bill D. PARSONS, and Mesdames Frances DIXON and Mary STRAHL.

HUNTER, Dr. Norman W. (Chemistry) was one of forty-one visitng summer faculty at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he conducted a seminar in Secondary Education on "Supervision: Selection of Gour se Content" from July 14 to July lB .

HUEY, Mrs. Johnnie B. (Foreign Languages) is listed in the 1970-71 edition of Who's Who of American Women. ---JACKSON, Mrs. Audrey R. (Sociology and Anthropology) has been invited to read a research paper at the Southern Sociological Meeting (Spring, 1970) in Atlanta for the section on Technology and Social Structure, headed by Professor Aaron Lipman of the University of Miami.

Mesdames Martha C . JENKINS , Romanza O . JOHNSON, Helen S. KELLEY, Joan M. KOCH, Joyce O. RASDALL, Lucile R. STILES, and Dr. Lilyan K. GALBRAITH (Home Economics and Family Living) attended a Horne Economics Teachers Workshop sponsored by the Bowling Green Electric Plant Board and Warren Rural Electric Cooperative on October 9 . The program was entitled IIKeeping Current. II

JOHNSON , Mrs. Romanza O . (Horne Economics and Falnily Living) attended the annual Arts and Crafts Show in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, October 24-26.

JONES, Mr. Wilburn C. (Mathematics) will address an Elementary Section of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at the convention in Mernphis, Tennessee, on IIAlgebra or Algebra Readiness in the Elementary School!! on November 7.

KEARNEY, Mrs. Mary Ann and Mr. Robert J. WURSTER (English) will attend the Region VI Conference of the National Association for Foreign Student Affairs at the University of Kentucky on November 7-B. Mrs. KEARNEY, who teaches English as a Second Language at Western, is regional co-ordinator of instructors in this field.

Mesdames Helen S. KELLEY, Lucile STILES, and Rornanza O. J OHNSON (Home Economics and Family Living) were judges for the Todd County Nutrition Fair, sponsored by the Todd County Chapter of the Kentucky School Food Service Assbciation at Elkton on October 10.

LEONARD, Dr. William E. and Messrs Randall CAPPS, Regis O'CONNOR, and Bill PARSONS (Speech and Theatre) conducted a workshop for high school speech teachers in Owensboro on Septembe r 29 while Dr. Mildred HOWARD, Miss Juliet K. McCRORY , and Messrs James L. BROWN and Paul R. COR TS (Speech and Theatre) conducted a workshop for high school speech teachers at Eli zabethtown on the same date .

Dr. A . A. Tabikh, of th e Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company in Chicago , brought the ma chine to Western .

MONTELL, Dr. Lynwood (History) attended the 54th annual session of the Association for th e Study of Negr o Life and History in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 9 - 12.

NASH , Dr. Ronald H. (Head, P hilosophy and Religion) will be included in the 12th edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. ----- --NIVA, Mr. Georg e (Coordinator of Drive r Education and Safety, Department of Physical Education, Health, and Recreation) was e lecte d Pr es ident of the Kentucky Driver and Traffic Safety Education Association fo r 1969 -70 at a r ecent mee ting in Frankfort.

Recent works by Mr. J ohn Warren OAKES (Art) were exhibited in Western's Art Gallery in Ch er r y Hall on October 20- 3 0. Since 1956, OAKES has exhibited in Regional and National exhibitio ns and eigh t on e -man shows. His wo rk has won numerous awards in art competitions . Most r ecently h e exhibited in Insel Gallery in New York City, and h e is r e pr e sented in over 500 public or private collections. This e xhibit included paintings, sculptur e, and drawings.

RASDALL, Mrs. Joyce O. (Horne Economics and Family Living) served as Adviser to the Kentucky Ho m e Economics Association Student M ember Section Vice Pr es ident, a Western student, a t Eastern Kentucky University, Ri chmond, on O ctobe r 18.

STILES, Mrs . Lucile R. and Dr. Lilyan K. GALBRAITH (Horne Economics and Family Living) participated in the 3rd Annual National Vocational- T echnical Teacher Education Seminar at the Deauville Hotel, Miami B each, Flo rida, on Octobe r 20 - 23 . Mrs. STILES was a member of th e g r oup s tudying Micro­Teaching, and Dr . GALBRAITH worked with the gr oup con cerne d with the disadvantaged.

VEENKER, Dr . Ronald A. (Philosophy and Religion) will present a paper entitled "An Old Babylonian L egal Procedure for Appeal: A Comparison of CT 2 47 with CT 45 18" at the Fall Meeting of the American Oriental Society in Bloomington, Indiana, on November 3-4.

WITTMAN, Dr. James S. (Sociology and Anthropology) attended the annual meeting of the National Council on Family Relations in Washington, D. C., on October 22- 24.

WOLFF, Mr. Clarence N. (Secondary Education, Chemistry, and Physics) will address an Ele mentary Section of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics at the convention in Me mphis, Tennessee, on "The Changing Role of the Classroom T eacher" o n November 8 .

WURSTER, Mr. Robert J. (English) attended the 1969 Danforth Associate Conference at the University of Chicago on August 26 - 31 where the conference topic was "The Future Unive rsity - Can It Realize Its Integrity?"

The Department of Foreign Languages hosted the state meeting of the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portugese on Saturday, October 25 .
