B rian Mackin, a former UAB base- ball letterman who had headed up the athletics development office since the spring of 2002, was named the Blazers’ new director of athletics in February, 2007 Since Mackin became AD, the athletics program has seen several substantial facility improvements with more planned for the near future Since January of this year, a new strength and conditioning facility, sports medicine area and a totally revamped and expanded Academic Center, named the Don M & Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center, have opened Mackin joined UAB just over six years ago as senior associate athletic director for external affairs responsible for fund-raising, corporate sup- port and marketing for the athletic department In 2006, Mackin was named Division I-A Fund- raiser of the Year by the National Association of Athletic Development Directors Under Mackin’s leadership, contributions to UAB athletics have nearly tripled from $13 million in 2001 to about $37 million in 2006 Additionally, he has been responsible for the creation of several affinity groups including the Athletic Investors Group, the Cham- pion Club, and the Blazer Club, which brought together the two annual funds supporting football and men’s basketball Prior to joining UAB, Mackin served as Manager of Corporate Business Development at Vulcan Materials, where he was responsible for examining potential new markets for business development and locating growth opportunities in the industry Mackin earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from UAB in 1983 He was a member of the Blazer baseball team four seasons and then moved into the Houston Astros baseball organization where he spent one season Mackin then joined Vulcan Materials, where he held management positions in sales and market analysis In 1990, he joined Southern Ready Mix as sales manager before joining Dunn Construction in 1993 where he rose to vice president in 1999 His responsi- bilities included business development, sales and project management Mackin’s community activities include the Birmingham Tip-Off Club, which hosts the State High School Final Four, the Monday Morning Quarterback Club and the Birming- ham Rotary Club He has served as the presi- dent of the Birmingham Tip-Off Club Mackin, who attended St Francis Xavier Elementary School, and his wife, Sally, have five children: Ragland (20), Brian, Jr (18), Ferrel (14), Mary Aileen (13), Ella (12) Brian Mackin, Athletics Director

Dr . Carol Z . Garri-son became Presi-

dent of UAB in 2002 and oversees Alabama’s largest employer, with 18,000 faculty and staff, 17,000 students, and a $1 .4 billion budget . UAB is approaching $400 mil-

lion in sponsored research, and is among the top universities in the country federal funding .

As president of UAB, Dr . Garrison also chairs the board of the UAB Health System, which includes the UAB Hospital, The Kirklin Clinic, and other of UAB’s nationally ranked patient care facilities .
