“As a young person, I feel it necessary to show the great nation that we live in that there doesn't need to be this kind of violence and hatred in our world. And that loving one another doesn't mean that we have to compromise our beliefs; it simply means that we choose to be compassionate and respectful of others.” ― Judy Shepard, The Meaning of Matthew: My Son's Murder in Laramie, and a World Transformed

the course of the next year conducted more than 200 interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play The Laramie Project, a chronicle of the life of the town of Laramie in the year after the murder. The Laramie Project is one of the most performed plays in America today.

Urbana High School will present this emotionally charged show with a PG-

With The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in the rearview mirror and The Laramie Project rapidly approaching, there is no rest for the members of the UHS Drama Department. Spelling Bee certainly kicked off our season with tremendous success and we are grateful to our audiences who helped embrace the humor and quirkiness of this show. I could not have done it without the help of the many drama booster parents who coordinated the many volunteers for the jobs needed to make it a successful event. I am in awe of the passion, dedication and energy that the cast and crew of Spelling Bee displayed, even when sickness ran rampant among the cast. They constantly brought their A-game to bring exciting performances to the audience. It was special for me to direct one of my favorite shows and work with the cast. There was something to be said for working with such a small ensemble. They truly got to work with each other, get to know each other, and build an ensemble, opportunities that large cast shows don’t often provide due to time constraints. Producing a musical in the fall created several challenges beyond fall sickness: working without a pit orchestra. Due to marching band being in full swing, we relied on Mr. Victor Frush, who not only taught the vocals, but led the one man pit, playing the piano for the show, creating an intimate setting this show demands; also, my hats go off to the cast for putting together a musical in less time than normal. With school starting later, there was less time to put together a fall play let alone a musical. I was in constant awe of the focus of the cast. I am certainly looking forward to what the rest of the year has in store for new individuals, new opportunities, new exciting moments, and us. We hope you want to be a part of them with us! Thank you for the support. Stephen Ward UHS Drama Director [email protected] (Best method of contact) 240-236-7712

It has certainly been a couple busy months! The production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee was a huge hit. The cast and crew were awesome and I know that many of us received quite a chuckle! I would like to thank all of our parent volunteers for helping to bring this show to life ~ without all of you these productions would not be possible. A special shout out has to go to Beth Coyne for gathering up the troops and keeping us all in line.

Many of you are capturing memories on your camera of your darling thespians through out the years. We would love to be able to offer a sharing resource in the UHS Drama Department. We are excited to offer secured access to a new UHS Drama Shutterfly page. This will allow us to select from everyone’s photos for our various slide shows at cast parties as well. We know the students send photos to Mr. Ward, now we can share our photos with him.

Follow the link to sign up: https://uhsdramaboosters.shutterfly.com/

We also want these memories preserved in our school year book. Go to: http://www.hjeshare.com/eShare/index.html and enter code 14044 to have your photos added to the pool that the yearbook committee can choose from. You can even add the names of the students in the photos.

Urbana High School Theater Mission Statement The mission of Urbana High School Theater is to provide an educational foundation which enables all students to grow in skill and confidence as a result of creative expression. Affectionately known as the "F-Wing," many of our students interpret the F as "Family;" in essence, much like Theater has throughout history accepted everyone, so does this department. Accepting each other and working together, students will recognize that it is not the end product that determines success, but the process of getting there determines success in theater. It is the place where students can explore, develop and find their imagination, talents, confidence and creativity without feeling judged. Theater is meant to educate and entertain, and through the process of putting on a production, students will learn not only about the theater, but themselves as well.
