UK’s Leading Ports Group Improves Safety with Globus Hand Protection

ABP is the UK’s leading port operator, with a unique network of 21 ports across England, Scotland and Wales. The company handles millions of tonnes of cargo each year and are investing over £650 million in new facilities and infrastructure.

ABP operates a Health and Safety programme across all of its sites called ‘Five Point PPE’. This involves the mandatory provision of five core items of personal protective equipment to the workforce in operational areas.

With regards to hand protection, ABP wanted to simplify the selection of gloves available to staff. Too much choice and differing safety standards can be confusing and a core range suited to specific tasks would be more efficient.

As a company that is committed to improving their safety record around cargo handling, ABP wanted to ensure their entire staff returns home safely every day, and providing the correct PPE is paramount to achieving this success.

Globus was commissioned to initially evaluate hand protection requirements and following the implementation of its Hand Protection Programme, a core range of gloves was proposed. These met the specific requirements of ABP’s diverse cargo handling business without compromising safety.

Globus hand protection experts worked alongside the ABP Quality and Compliance team in instigating glove trials amongst the workforce. The ABP workforce quickly became engaged in the evaluation process and subsequently, a Globus glove solution was adopted.

The range consists of six gloves, each suited to different environments and handling tasks, from both the SHOWA and SKYTEC product ranges.

SHOWA S-TEX GP1 Applications: Portside operations, Stevedores, Engineers and other heavy duty handling where mechanical risk to the hands from cuts, nicks and splinters is present.

SHOWA 377 and 477 Applications: Heavy engineering operations where high oil, grease and similar contaminants are present. Marine rope handling where contaminants are present and work with wet oily ropes may be encountered.

SHOWA 380Applications: Managers, Supervisors, Pilots (light duties) and other mechanical and electrical operations and light duty mechanical handling tasks – provides grip in dry and lightly oily environments and excellent dexterity.

SKYTEC DIGIT 1Applications: High dexterity precision tasks such as electrical and instrumentation service, repair and overhaul.

SHOWA 306Applications: Operations when wet, such as marine work afloat.
