IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller 6.2 Announcement Overview

This educational material is intended for IBM and IBM Business Partner staff only. It is not intended for distribution to customers or other third parties.15

“With the Storwize V7000 IBM has taken its proven enterprise-class SVC storage virtualisation software and deployed it on a custom storage appliance, making the functionality accessible to a much broader mid-range market.

A well executed implementation, all the features of SVC are there, including thin provisioning, snap-shotting and Easy Tieringdata migration to fast solid state disks. Added to which the V7000 can be used to dynamically migrate external SAN storage to dramatically cut the time it takes to move to a new SAN platform.

Clearly aimed at mid-sized organisations, the V7000 is well built, well specified and very scalable. It's also competitively pricedand well worth considering against other mid-range storage solutions from EMC, HP, NetApp and others, many of which charge extra for functionality such as thin provisioning that comes as standard on the V7000.”

About the client About the client Thetrainline is the leading independent retailer of train tickets on-line

Client challengeClient challengeRequirement for a new storage environment to support an internal transformation project to virtualise its existingserver and application estate

Client needClient needThetrainline had purchased HP storage for its development environment and now needed a production Storage Area Network

Solution implementationSolution implementationThetrainline had quotes for HP EVA and were set for a purchase, until three days after Team IBM's first presentation. A very quick sales process:

•From initial presentation to receipt of the purchase order -- only took five days.•This included sizing, configuration and pricing (including maintenance) for the IBM StorwizeV7000, TotalStorage Productivity Center Midrange Edition and Tivoli Storage FlashCopyManager

Benefit of the solutionBenefit of the solution•The ability to virtualize and re-use existing end of life storage.•A very competitive standard price against HP EVA 8400.•An array that could cater to very 'peaky' Ecommerce-type workloads using Easy Tier.•An array that can scale with the Thetrainline since it has a limited view of future growth requirements.•Team IBM's close working relationship with Thetrainline's managed service provider.

How IBM won the businessHow IBM won the business•In addition to the benefits of the technical solution, Thetrainline saw the real value in our Managed Services Provider relationship, as well as their distributor of choice
