A Jubilee Letter from Revd Diana

“What are you looking for? John1.38 There is a real sense of excitement and expectancy as the Village Jubilee Celebrations draw nearer. There is always something special about celebrations which are directed towards others than when the focus is on ourselves. Perhaps that’s why the best birthday parties are not our own, but other happy times spent in celebration with friends and families. As I write many village initiatives are coming to fruition. The Community Shop is planned to open at the beginning of July and hopefully the last bit of funding is now in place so work can start on the new sports pavilion. Let’s hope the young people will also have the skate ramp when all the necessary details are in place. What a lot of thanks we owe to so many people, who are willing to work from small beginnings for the benefit of the whole community. At the beginning of Jesus’ ministry these words are written at the start of St John’s gospel. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “what are you looking for? I wonder what we would say faced with that question. Awestruck, speechless or would all sorts of requests come pouring out. Requests for miracles or answers to problems and concerns? 1A Jesuit priest tells a story about a woman who dreamed that Jesus was a salesperson in the market place. When she asked him what he sold Jesus replied that she could have everything her heart desired. She excitedly poured out her requests for freedom from fear the end of pain and struggles. When Jesus heard this he responded, “Oh no, you’ve got me wrong. We don’t sell fruits here, only seeds. “ How often do we hope that God will act to remove all the difficulties in our lives, and look for instant promises? Instead we are given “seeds” like wisdom, faithfulness, duty, patience and love. In this way we can mature and grow as people and find ourselves giving ourselves to our communities in order to grow good things for the future. As we celebrate the Jubilee let us give thanks for the faithfulness, faith and courage of our Queen and be thankful for our own village community. Have a wonderful time celebrating the Diamond Jubilee Love Diana 1 Anthony De Mello

Fund Raising at St Bartholomew’s Church The Spring Concert at the end of April raised £250 for the Tower Repair Fund. St Bartholomew’s Church echoed to the spectacular sound of Westonbirt School Samba Band who opened and closed the concert. In between the talented Copious Notes singing group, the delightful choir and steel pans from St Joseph’s School, the Nympsfield Community Steel Band playing in public for the first time and young soloists entertained the audience. Thank you to all who took part and special thanks to all those who provided the refreshments at the end of the concert. The Cream Teas at the beginning of May raised £200. Well done Nympsfield

Uley C of E Primary School update Despite the wet weather, there has been a gardening theme to the start of the summer term, with an inspirational talk by Fergus Garrett of Great Dixter, and plenty of planting in our own gardening area. Our Spiritual Peace Garden is a welcome addition to our outdoor space - it offers a quiet place to sit beneath the trees and colourful flags, and was the perfect location for our recent outdoor assembly. Inside, we're working on our library - all the children are contributing to an exciting project to paint the walls with a landscape filled with characters from our favourite books. There is a lot to look forward to this term. Highlights include Art Week from May 21

st.

We will be welcoming two artists to the school to work with the children, and there will be a whole school visit to Bristol Art Gallery. The juniors are also planning a trip to the Cheltenham Science Fair in the coming weeks. On July 9

th we’ll be proud to demonstrate the language skills the children have been

developing when we welcome visitors from Le Sap. We’re very lucky that Madame Harling gives up her time each week to teach the Reception class, as well as lunchtime French Club for older children. We’re working hard to prepare for our school fete on July 7

th – if anyone has any bric-

a-brac, clothes, books or plants that you would be willing to donate, they would be

very welcome.

Fergus Garrett event - 3rd May Many thanks to all who came and supported this wonderful event. For those of us that attended, the evening was magical and left us all feeling inspired about what we could do with our gardens. We are pleased to announce that we raised over £800. 25% of this will be donated to Cotswold Care with the remainder going to Uley Primary school. We will use this to help create a spiritual peace garden for the children and to finish off our school library which the children are already enjoying. Thank you again. News from St Joseph’s School Our Rescue theme in Key Stage 1 has taken off with a ‘Bang.’ The children have been learning all about the Great Fire of London, Samuel Pepys and the destruction that the fire caused. They have been dressing up as emergency service men and women, issuing their peers with speeding tickets and seeking to find a lost dog! Meanwhile, in Key Stage 2, the children have been travelling around the world and have landed in Africa, where they are reading stories from other cultures. They enjoyed a fantastic drumming workshop, creating a range of rhythms and beats. The school held an ‘Open Morning’ this term, which was a lovely opportunity for the children to share their achievements with their parents. There was a great turn out and we really appreciate the support our parents give to our school. Throughout this term, several of our children have been preparing for their First Holy Communion which was celebrated Sunday 20

th May. It was a beautiful Mass,

celebrated by Fr Alex and all of the children looked beautiful. I would like to thank Sid Gwyer, Obre Arundell and Sister Mary Margaret for preparing the children for this sacrament. As we look forward to the rest of the term, our Y5/6 children are looking forward to their residential trip at Tregoyd House, in the Brecon Beacons, where they will take part in many outdoor activities. Our PTA is working extremely hard in pulling together our Summer Fayre which is taking place on 2

nd June-please do come along

and support us. We have another Open morning on the 22nd

June-so please do come along and see our school in action!

OPEN-AIR SHAKESPEARE AT STOUTS HILL !!! You are cordially invited to an open-air performance of Shakespeare’s comedy, AS YOU LIKE IT on Thursday 14 June in the lovely setting of the grounds of Stouts Hill. The play will be performed by the long-established and professional RAIN OR SHINE THEATRE COMPANY from Gloucester. AS YOU LIKE IT is a “romantic and light-hearted comedy with a Court in turmoil, a banished Duke and his villainous twin, a cross-dressing heroine and her gooseberry friend. There is an honest man and his wicked brother, a jester, a philosopher, wenches and shepherds, a wrestling match with a twist and songs a-plenty.” Please bring your own low-backed chairs and/or a rug together with warm clothing, a hot flask and perhaps insect repellent. Gates will open at 6.30pm for picnics and the performance will begin at 7.30pm. Duration of performance about 2 hours 30 minutes including 20 minute interval.

Tickets £13.50, £11.50 (concessions) and £6 (5-15 years). Tickets from 0845 644 0931 and 07774 852644.

Also from Stouts Hill or on the door. Donald Hollins [email protected]

ULEY PARISH COUNCIL What We’ve Done This Month

Here are some of the items that we have been dealing with over the past month: 1. Diamond Jubilee celebrations

We hope that everyone staying in the village for the Jubilee weekend is going to attend at least one of the many events organised to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee. In particular we would be grateful if you could take photographs of any events that you attend so that we can collate some mementoes of the occasion for posterity. Please would you pass on any photographs to the clerk, Shani Baker ([email protected]).

Do buy some of the Jubilee raffle tickets!

The Jubilee Tree (a Holm Oak) is to be planted in the Millenium Green (on the lower part near to the river) at 11.30 am on Sunday 3rd June, along with the Jubilee Time Capsule.

2. New Recycling Wheelie Bins

Stroud District Council is introducing a fortnightly doorstep cardboard collection in addition to their fortnightly glass, plastic and paper collection. To do this they need to provide households with a wheelie bin to be used as well as the current green box(es). Paper, card, cardboard and cartons should be placed in the green box, leaving glass, cans, batteries, foil and plastic packaging to be put in the new wheelie bin. Black bag waste will continue weekly as before.

Stroud have undertaken an assessment of all properties in the area to determine whether they can or cannot accommodate a wheeled bin. Where a property has no space to store a bin, nowhere safe to present a bin for collection or access difficulties (step or gradient), then these properties will be provided with reusable sacks instead.

Stroud will post a letter and leaflet to all households during w/c 7th May which will provide details of whether a wheelie bin or sacks will be provided. If a householder feels they have been allocated the wrong recycling container, they should call the council on (01453) 754424 and explain their circumstances. The delivery of bins and bags is scheduled to start on 21st May and will continue until the end of June.

3. Hay Bales:

A polite reminder about making sure that children do not attempt to ‘play’ with hay bales. These are extremely heavy but could move, especially if they are pushed downhill. They could trap and kill a child or animal if they roll onto them. A hay bale has killed someone who was trapped in a car by the bale.

Notes from Uley Archives

ULEY WORKHOUSE After the crash of the woollen industry in Uley, life was hard. The workhouse, a large building, described by Dr. Alan Bebbington in his book on Uley, was situated facing down from the top of Fop Street on the opposite side of the road to the Chapel. This was repaired in 1830 and a set of Rules, Orders & Regulations was drawn up at a Special Petty Sessions held at W-u-E, submitted by the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Uley. Here are a few interesting notes taken from that document, originally researched by Barbara Wright and Mike Langley in 1977. The Workhouse was divided into ‘wards’, one for married persons & their children under l0, another to single women, another to single men & boys. and the remaining ward for the old & infirm. Not more than two full grown persons or three children to be put to sleep in one bed. A Visiting Committee would inspect the workhouse once a week. A Keeper was appointed, having the care of all linen, utensils, tools etc, responsible for the accounts and care of the garden. All poor persons entering the workhouse had to be washed immediately and their clothes purified, and their names entered in the Register. There was a book called the “Journal of Punishment” in which all offences were entered, including causing riots, drunkenness, violent language, profane swearing, refusing to work, etc . The poor persons who were fit were expected to find work until 6pm with 1 hour rest from 9 am to l0 am, and again in the afternoon from 1pm until 2pm. Wages appear to have been 7/- to 9/- a week. It seems that the occupants of the workhouse were well fed. I can find no record of when the workhouse ceased to be used, or was demolished. If anyone has such information, please get in touch with me. Margaret Groom.

~Uley Community Stores~ PUBLIC MEETING Thank you to all those who came to the public meeting held in the Village Hall on Saturday 12th May 2012. The Steering Committee handed over the task of taking this project to the next stage to the Management Committee. SHARES An Independent Provident Society has been set up and the committee are in negotiation with the present owners regarding a 10 year lease. The aim is not just to have a few members buying a large amount of shares – the more members of the village who join the better. It will be one member, one vote so please find that envelope and form that came through your door and join. There are spare forms in the Village Shop. This type of share offer has a time limit – all applications have to be received by Wednesday 6th June. If you have any queries regarding shares please call Tom Potts on 860 814. VOLUNTEERS So what next? There is now a need for volunteers both to work in the stores and to help with the shop refurbishment, due to be done in October. This will be a shop owned by the community, for the community and run by the community. If you would like more details on becoming a volunteer, please either email [email protected] or telephone Janet Wood on 860236 or Angela Haddrell on 861 131.

From the Playing Field Our fund-raising drive in the village for the new pavilion went very well indeed. We put 700-odd envelopes into 700 houses – extraordinary how many people have no letter-box – and 114 came back containing cheques or cash. The total raised was almost £4,000, and this will be boosted by gift-aid income tax rebates to nearly £5,000 – an extremely generous response. Including earlier donations, members of the parish have contributed over £7,000. We have now raised a total of £135,000, but costs keep rising, and we are still going to need another £30,000 at least to complete the project. Sometime in June we will know whether or not we have been awarded a grant by the Gloucestershire Environmental Trust. We gave also made an application for a grant to the Football Association. Meanwhile, memories go back to fund-raising at the beginning of the 1960s, when the new pavilion had been built but not entirely paid for. John Flood, who taught science at Stouts Hill School and later lived in the Walled Garden, recalls how the traditional Uley Feast was revived on St Giles’s Day (1 September) by Tom Elliott of the building firm, and a great party was held on the Playing Field. As John had already held a fund-raising event at the school – at which ‘the village policeman rather enjoyed the beer’ – he was put in charge of the bar, and set up a number of barrels in the new pavilion,. On the day the ale quickly sold out, ‘much of it to the band.’ One of the attractions was a venison roast. By the time of the feast the head of the fallow buck was in poor condition, but London friends of the Floods took it to a taxidermist and had it mounted, and the antlers were displayed in the pavilion for several years. John reckons it a pity that the Uley Feast no longer takes place. Will anyone revive it? Duff Hart-Davis

Village Agent.

I thought it might be helpful this month to do a catch up on local news of “what’s out there”. In these times of cut backs we are really pleased to tell you that Stroud District Council have some budget available to be able to fund free loft and cavity wall insulation and there is some funding (typically 40%) towards external wall insulation. The scheme is being managed by “Warm and Well” who will organise a free no obligation survey for you and the work is being carried out by Domestic and General. Call 0800 500 3076 to find out if you could qualify. There is an exciting new project starting in conjunction with G.C.A.B (Gloucestershire County Association for the Blind) and GDA (Gloucestershire Deaf Association) who will be running joint clinics together in the Stroud Area. As you can imagine this would have a huge impact on the lives of people who find it difficult to travel to Gloucester or Cheltenham, especially the elderly. You will be offered hearing aid maintenance, advice on listening equipment and the services provided by GDA. GCAB will be offering advice and guidance to the visually impaired. There is no charge for this service, however donations are very welcome. The clinic will be held at the Subscription Rooms in Stroud Thursdays 10am-1pm June, 5
