Observe, even on Christmas Eve, our covetous old sinner, Ebenezer Scrooge is fending off the kindness of the world with his greedy bitterness. But tonight there is something in the air, or perhaps in his bowl of cold gruel, to call forth the ghost of his long-dead business partner to warn him of the visits of three Spirits and to heed their lessons or risk losing his humanity forever. The Spirit of Christmas Past shows him the promise of his youth, the goodness and joviality of his former employer, Fezziwig, and his forgotten love for his past fiance, Belle. And look at Ebenezer Scrooge. Look! The death of his sister in the bloom of her life! Ebenezer is not the first, nor will he be the last of his species to suffer such a loss. And what did he do to obtain mean comfort? He pushed away all around him that was good and embraced all that was base. So, Ebenezer Scrooge weeps now. He weeps for his past and for what might have been......

There may be hope yet for our Mr. Scrooge as he is shown by the Spirit of Christmas Present and his Sprites that the joy and hope of Christmas can never be dampened. The Cratchits, poor as they are, are making a splendid day of it, and his ill-treated clerk, Bob, even honors him with a toast! And his nephew Fred’s party... The games, the music, the fun... Oh, if only he had accepted the invitation. Why, now even Fred is toasting him!

But this Spirit is not yet done with him. Here are the children, the hungry and the ill-clothed, the innocent victims of the world’s “Ignorance and Want,” the “excess population” that Scrooge fancies are none of his business!

And now the final terrifying lesson from the Spirit of Christmas Yet To Come, for what mortal would care to glimpse the results of a life ill-spent and unredeemed? Is all hope blown before the winds of time and cannot courage be found to correct the course of a fearful life? The lessons of the three spirits swirl through his mind.

Was it a dream? Are these churchbells a part of the dream? No, it’s Christmas morning! A chance! That’s it... Ebenezer is being given a chance to be of some help to the world! Today, and every day! First, where is his faithful housekeeper, Mrs. Dilber?... And then he must get a turkey over to the Cratchit’s... And then to Fred’s party...What a glorious day!
