APPLYING FOR ADMISSIONWHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU APPLY

• You can put three program choices on your application.

• Your first choice should be your top choice. If you don’t get accepted to your first choice, we’ll automatically consider your other choices, in the order that you specify.

• Pick a new subject for each choice. For example, don’t choose the Honours, specialization and major in the same subject (e.g. Psychology) for your three choices. If you don’t meet the requirements for the Honours, we’ll automatically consider you for the specialization or the major instead.

• Admission requirements for some programs are exactly the same (for example, all John Molson School of Business degree programs). Do not choose more than one program for your three choices if they have the same admission requirements.

• Consider including a less competitive program among your choices. This will help maximize your chances!

DEFINITIONS• Your academic program is the type of degree you’ll be doing (Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Commerce, etc.).

• Your academic plan is the subject that you’ll be studying (Biology, Finance, etc.).

• Elective courses, depending on your program, allow you to explore interests outside of your required courses.

ACADEMIC PLAN TYPES

• A major requires you to take enough courses that you’ll end up with a general overview of the field, but not so many that you won’t still have extensive room for exploration outside the field.

• A specialization provides a more in-depth study of your field while leaving you room to take other courses.

• Honours is a highly concentrated program, ideal for students planning to continue on to graduate studies.

• An option refers to plans within engineering or computer science.

• A minor gives you a basic introduction to a field. You can add a minor to complement a major, specialization or honours, but you can’t complete a minor by itself. Minors are optional.

for things like specific math and/or science requirements, a letter of intent, a portfolio, etc.

3. Apply online at concordia.ca/apply.

4. Include your supporting documents: a. Transcripts: upload a copy now. We’ll ask you for

official copies later, if you’re accepted.

b. Proof of language proficiency, if applicable.

c. Proof of Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, if applicable.

d. Program-specific requirements, if applicable (i.e. letter of intent, portfolio, etc.) You may need to submit these additional documents directly to the academic department. Check concordia.ca/programs.

EXTENDED CREDIT PROGRAM (ECP)

Most students entering Concordia from outside Quebec are admitted to the ECP. This requires the completion of 30 credits in addition to the regular 90 or 120 credit degree programs.

MATURE ENTRY PROGRAM (MEP)

The MEP usually requires the completion of 18 additional credits. See page 11 for minimum admissions requirements. This program is reserved for students from Quebec.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

The University reserves the right to request off icial documents at any time during the admissions process, and rescind any Offer of Admission made if discrepancies between unoff icial and off icial documents are found.

TRANSCRIPTSUpload a copy of your transcripts when you apply. We’ll ask you for official documents once you receive an Offer of Admission. (See exceptions for Quebec and Ontario students below.)

QUEBEC CEGEP STUDENTSIncluding your permanent code on your application will allow us to receive your transcripts automatically.

ONTARIO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTSIf you also applied to an Ontario university, you have an Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) number. OUAC will provide us with your high school transcripts.

• Include a valid OUAC number for the current year on your admissions application.

• Winter term exception: OUAC does not send transcripts for the winter term, so if you apply to Concordia for the winter term, please upload a copy of your transcript.

• If you didn’t apply through OUAC, please upload a copy of your transcript.

OTHER CANADIAN PROVINCES / UNITED STATES AND INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS• Upload all transcripts from your previous educational

institutions (both secondary and post-secondary). • If you’re currently enrolled in school:

• Submit the results of previous terms and a list of your current courses.

• Include mid-term grades if they’re available.• All transcripts should be in their original language.

Transcripts in a language other than English or French must be translated by a certified translator.

• Describe any experience, knowledge, or skills which you have acquired that would assist you in your studies.

HOME-SCHOOLED APPLICANTS• Submit all supporting application documents, e.g. SAT and AP

test scores and transcript of any academic institution attended. You must also include:

• A description of the home-schooling curriculum followed and measures of academic acquisition in the program;

• A letter of intent explaining the basis on which admission is sought and a letter from the home educator detailing how the home-school program has prepared the applicant for university studies;

• A letter of recommendation from an impartial source indicating the applicant’s readiness for university-level study.

TRANSFER APPLICANTS FROM COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES If you’re interested in transferring to Concordia from another university, we will consider your transfer application on the basis of both your university studies and your previous studies. The number of credits awarded depends on the character, quality and quantity of the work completed. A minimum of 45 credits, and in some cases 60 credits, must be taken at Concordia University to complete your degree.

• Upload transcripts from any post-secondary institution you've attended, indicating any courses in progress.

• You should also upload transcripts from previous educational institutions.

TRANSFER CREDIT EVALUATIONAcademic credit may be awarded for university-level courses that are equivalent to Concordia courses and appropriate to the program you are applying to. An evaluation of transfer credits will be made once you have received an Offer of Admission, paid the confirmation fee and have provided all the necessary documents.

Advanced Placement (AP): Students who have successfully passed Advanced Placement examinations in appropriate subjects with a grade of 3 or better may be granted some advanced standing. Some subjects require a grade of 4. Visit concordia.ca/admissions/AP for a list of accepted AP courses.

ENGLISH-LANGUAGE PROFICIENCYIf the primary language of your education for the last three years is not English, then you may be required to submit proof of language proficiency. Visit concordia.ca/ugrad-elp or see page 10 for more details.

STATUS IN CANADAEvery Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada applying to Concordia — except for CEGEP applicants — must provide proof of their status in Canada. If you do not provide this proof of status, you will be charged international tuition fees.

To prove Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status, submit a clear copy of one of the following documents:

GOVERNMENT STUDENT FINANCIAL AID Concordia participates in all Canadian government student financial aid programs as well as the United States Federal Student Aid program. As a general rule, students should apply to the program of the province or country where they currently live. Apply for government student aid as soon as possible. Do not wait to be admitted to start this process.

EXTERNAL FINANCIAL AWARDS External awards require a separate application. You can find a list of privately funded scholarships and bursaries sponsored by external associations, companies, foundations, societies and clubs at concordia.ca/external-awards.

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIESYour application to Concordia is also your application for an entrance scholarship. There’s no need to apply separately. Concordia’s entrance scholarships are based on academic achievement, along with other criteria in some cases. Incoming students who are in financial need may be eligible for special funding in the form of a bursary. You can apply using the Entrance Bursary form on MyConcordia.ca .

Certain programs require additional material such as a letter of intent or a portfolio, or the completion of appropriate mathematics and science courses. ManitobaHigh school diploma with a minimum of five academic Grade 12 40S courses, one of which must be an ELA Focus 40S. Note: Essential Math 40S is not acceptable as one of the five courses. Minimum consideration for admission: C+.

Home-schooled applicants

We treat each home-school case on its own merits. In some cases, an interview with a university official may be required.

University transfer students (from an accredited university)

We will consider your application on the basis of both university and previous studies, and will consider placing you at an appropriate level within your chosen program. Minimum consideration for admission: C

Mature Entry

If you do not meet Concordia’s minimum academic admission requirements, you may be eligible to study at Concordia through Mature Entry, based on age, experience and academic potential.

Conditions to be considered for mature entry:

1. Age: You must be at least 21 years old by August 1 or December 1 for entry in September or January respectively.

2. Academic Background: You lack the normal academic requirements for admission (for example, you did not complete high school, did not attend CEGEP or started but did not complete a DEC) but you can demonstrate the ability to successfully undertake undergraduate courses.

If you have a completed credential but it does not meet the University’s minimum requirements, you can apply as a mature student. For example, you graduated from high school with an overall grade of C- and have been out of school for 6 years. The completed credential does not meet the minimum so you can apply.

If you have a completed credential that meets the University’s minimum requirement, then you should not apply as a mature student (i.e. you completed Ontario high school 10 years ago or CEGEP 5 years ago).

3. Period without studies: You have not studied full-time for at least 24 months since the age of 18. If you have been out of school for 12 months, you may be admitted provided your academic record for the previous 24 months is favourable. Note - Full-time studies at CEGEP is considered 7-8 courses.

Program structureUndergraduate degrees the the Faculty of Arts and Science consist of at least one area of concentration (major at 36 –48 credits; specialization or Honours at 60 or more credits). The balance of the degree requirements may be made up of a broad spectrum of disciplines as electives. Students are required to complete at least 24 credits outside the main area of concentration and/or department.

Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Science

A BA or BSc takes a minimum of three or four years (90 – 120 credits) of full-time study, depending on your academic background and chosen program.

Bachelor of Education

The BEd is only offered as a Specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language. The BEd takes a minimum of four years (120 – 150 credits) of full-time study, depending on your academic background.

Teacher education

Teacher education is offered in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and Teaching English as a Second Language in the Faculty of Arts and Science (120 – 150 credits). Graduates are eligible for a licence to teach (brevet d’enseignement) from the Ministère de l'éducation et de l'enseignement supérieur. Graduates who satisfy the requirements of the Ministry of Education of Quebec will be recommended to the Ministry for immediate, permanent provincial teacher certification. Teacher education is also offered in Art Education in the Faculty of Fine Arts.

For the audition, applicants must prepare and perform a monologue (review and select a monologue option online). There will also be a group audition in a workshop-style format. Applicants are responsible for booking an audition. This can be done online after submitting Concordia’s admission application.

The letter of intent (1-2 pages) helps those considering your application to learn more about who you are as an artist and a student, how you express yourself in writing, what your goals are within the program, your experience and related skills.

Out-of-town applicants: The program normally accepts students only by live, in-person audition. After completing the online admissions application, applicants must submit the pre-audition questionnaire and select an audition date for live audition.

Candidates selected for an audition will then have a one-on-one interview with a faculty member. Candidates will be assessed based on: Technique, improvisation, choreography, and the interview. The four-part audition includes group technique class in contemporary dance, group improvisation led by faculty, followed by individual presentations of the candidate’s solo and interview with faculty. The audition also assesses the physical, creative and personal potential of each applicant. Applicants are responsible for booking an audition.

Out-of-town applicants may submit an online video audition. After completing the University admissions application, fill out the pre-audition questionnaire and select the option to do a video audition.

Applicants should have at least two years of experience in contemporary or related dance.

Your portfolio should include 1 to 2 Moving Image portfolio items and will be submitted online. The maximum length of each Moving Image portfolio item is 5 minutes; excerpts from longer works are therefore encouraged (the jury will not watch past 5 minutes). Two moving images may NOT be combined into one 10-minute moving image. Moving Image portfolio items may be either uploaded (Maximum video size: 500MB) or linked to our portfolio upload system from Youtube or Vimeo. NOTE: Portfolio items may be in any supported audio/video format. The H.264 compression profile is recommended.

The letter of intent should be 250-500 words and should indicate your reasons for applying to the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, your expectations of the program, reasons for choosing cinema as your primary form of artistic expression, your past achievements, your short and long-term goals as a maker of moving images, etc.

Applicants applying to both the Film Production Major and the Film Animation Major and/or Minor must submit separate portfolios and letters of intent for each program.

• DO NOT Submit: Drawings/images copied from, adapted from, or derivative of recognizable/ pre-existing animated or fantasy characters, celebrities, magazine photographs or established studio-based animation styles or generalized applications, especially if you are applying to several different programs. Build your portfolio for the program you are applying for!

The letter of intent should be approximately 500 words. It should describe your views on who you are as an artist, why you would be a good fit for the Film Animation program and your expectations of the Film Animation program.

Your video audition should include 3 to 4 pieces, with a total of no more than 15 minutes, with a good variety of styles, tempi, and sounds. Please upload short separate videos for each piece. Singers must sing in at least 2 languages, and must perform from memory. If the piece requires accompaniment, you must perform it with an accompanist.

The Basic Theory Test must be passed in order to be admitted. The other mandatory theory and ear-training placement tests can lead to course exemptions. Materials range quite broadly, from very basic rudiments up to intermediate harmony, counterpoint, and formal analysis.

The piece may include excerpts of poetry, text or music, but the majority of the piece must be original. The presentation is not an acting audition, per se, but rather should reveal theatrical imagination and creativity as well as the applicant’s interests. Applicants are responsible for booking an audition. This can be done online after submitting Concordia’s admission application.

Out-of-town applicants: The program prefers students audition in person. However, out-of-town candidates can submit their audition online. Once the department has reviewed the online submission, selected candidates will be contacted for an online interview.

BACHELOR OF ADMINISTRATION The BAdmin provides students with a fundamental grounding in administration through the same set of core courses available to BComm students. Instead of selecting a specific major in business, students select a limited number of business courses that interest them, potentially including a minor in a specific business discipline. The BAdmin takes a minimum of three or four years (90 – 120 credits) of full-time study, depending on your academic background.

All students Admission criteria (with the exception of the Certificate in Foundation for Business) are identical for all JMSB undergraduate degrees and certificates. If you are not admitted to one program, you will not be admitted to the other programs.

Applicants who meet the minimum cut-off averages are not guaranteed admission. CEGEP applicants Admission to JMSB is based on the overall CRC and the CRC of Calculus 1 and Linear Algebra only. Applicants who have completed at least one of these two mathematics courses but lack the other courses as indicated below, may be admitted, provided these courses are completed at JMSB during the first year:

• MATH 103 or 201-NYA and 105 or 201-NYC (minimum of 75% for MATH exemptions)

• Microeconomics and Macroeconomics (minimum of 75% for ECON exemptions)

External university transfers Applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements but lack some or all of the prerequisite courses are encouraged to apply and may still be considered for admission, provided they have completed business or business-related courses. The prerequisite courses are Calculus I, Linear Algebra, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and Computer Literacy. Certificate program The Certificate in Accountancy is intended for students who are pursuing the Chartered Professional Accountancy (CPA) designation.
