Underlays with vapour barrierVapour barrier is also a must have. It protects the floor from moisture and vast majority of laminate floor manufacturers do not accept a warranty when vapour barrier is not installed. Underlays with Aquastop foil can be fitted easily and secure on mineral subfloors. Make sure you have product with Aquastop foil and overlap to speed up the installation.

The capacity to impede the diffusion of vapor is expressed using the SD value. Based on practical experience, this value should be at least 75 m. The higher the SD value, the better the film will protect the laminate floor covering against damage caused by rising damp.

While we cannot completely eliminate floor noises, they can be reduced significantly with a suitable underlay. Reductions in sound are expressed as a percentage (%) for reflected walking sound (RWS) and in decibels (dB) for impact sound (IS). What does this mean? Well, a noise reduction of 10 dB corre-sponds to 50% soundproofing to the human ear.

The best underlays on the market have an RWS of nearly 25% and an IS of more than 20 dB. Standard PE foam or and woodfibre are thus much less useful for this purpose, as they have hardly any effect on noise reduction.

Sound reduction is measured using specially develo-ped test methods (such as EN 16205 CEN/TS 16354 for RWS). In their tests manufactures of professional underlays use the methods recommended by the Association of European Producers of Laminate Flooring (EPLF). If a manufacturer lists incomparably high noise reduction parameters, this means that it uses other test methods to account for other room conditions.

The thermal resistance of a flooring system (floor covering + underlay) should therefore not exceed 0.15 m² K/W in accordance with DIN EN 1264.

The lower the thermal resistance of the flooring, the higher the efficiency of the underfloor heating. To determine the thermal resistance of a flooring system, simply combine the thermal resistance values of the floor covering and the underlay.

For example, laminate flooring of 8mm has a thermal resistance of ~0.08 m²K/W. With this flooring, you should use an underlay with minimal thermal resistance. Arbiton offers the best solution.

Multiprotec® 1000 is the best underlay for underfloor heating, with a thermal resistance of only 0.006 m²K/W.

Polyurethane-mineral underlays (PUM) – the highest standard that ensures the best sound-proofing. Furthermore, very high pressure resistance ensures floor protection and durability. Very low heat resistance makes the underlay an ideal solution for underfloor heating systems. Polyurethane underlays afford savings of up to 200 EUR (*) on energy bills within a single heating season in 6 monts.

Polyurethane and mineral underlays are the best choice in this regard, but in most cases we are looking for an underlay that better soundproofs the room or insulates the floor, as well as reduces noise in the rooms below. Here we have a few options, i.e. polyurethane and mineral (PUM) underlays, which are characterised by a low thickness and can eliminate equally well both reflected walking sounds and impact sounds.

If we take into account their other characteristics, such as heat conductivity for underfloor heating, they are certainly worth the price.

This layer is responsible for protection against moisture from the substrate. It may be made of a special vapour-proof membrane or an underlay with an integrated vapour barrier. To select a suitable vapour-proof membrane, pay attention to its SD rating (not its thickness). The higher the value, the higher the floor’s moisture resistance. The minimum required SD value is 75 m. Once the substrate is ready, unfold the vapour-proof membrane with a 20–30 cm overlap and seal it with moisture-resistant tape. The membrane must overlap the walls by up to 3–4cm.A faster and more reliable method involves the use of underlays with integrated vapour-suppressing film (2-in-1 or 3-in-1), which contains a self-adhesive layer to facilitate bonding.

INSTALLATION USAGE BENEFIT Minimum subsoil preparation (eliminates minor unevenness) and much quicker glue assembly. Innovative self-adhesive layer allows corrections up to 30 minutes after floor installation.

Before installation begins, make sure the surface is clean, dry and smooth. Read the installation guideli-nes from the floor manufacturer. In case of incre-ased humidity on the surface, contact your distributor or a professional floor installer. Follow the recommendations of the floor manufacturer concerning expansion gaps and exposure to sunlight.

Lay the underlay mat on the surface with the protec--tive film facing upwards, and cut each mat to the desired size with a knife. Lay the mats next to each other such that there are no gaps in between. The underlay mats should be laid perpendicularly to the LVT panels. The underlay mat does not serve to level the floor of the room

Remove the film protecting the adhesive from the mat. Do not remove the whole layer – only the part necessary to lay a few LVT panels. Avoid soiling the adhesive layer after removing the protective film, as this weakens the desired effect. Do not walk or kneel on the exposed adhesive layer! Glue the LVT panels to the mats, leaving no gaps in between. Lay the floor starting from the smallest underlay mat. The floor must overlap the next underlay mat by at least 10 cm. If you lay a panel incorrectly, you can remove it, and re-lay it. Bonding time is approx. 30 min.

Immediately after laying the LVT floor, you can move about on its surface. After laying several LVT panels, it is convenient to kneel on the panels which have already been glued, and continue pulling away the protective film and laying the next LVT panels. This will help you to avoid soiling the adhesive layer.

Unroll the vapour barrier foil on a clean and dry subsoil. Foil strips should be overlapping.

Connect foil strips with alu tape, cut off excess foil and connect to the wall using alu tape

Place underlay plates close to each other on the vapour barrier foil.

Connect plates with alu tape to provide a stable surface for floor installation.

Place the floor perpendicularly to the underlay according to the instructions provided by the floor manufacturer
