Unit Description:

In this unit we are going to review some more early American history that you covered in 8th grade. We are going to examine how the United States got from a loose confederation of states where we left off last unit to a growing federal government. We will look at some of the prominent figures and thinkers of that time and see how they compare to some of our modern figures. We will see how the country transformed over the first half-century of its existence, but how the original fault line of slavery still led to the temporary break-up of the union in 1861.

Unit Objectives: Students will by the end of the unit should able able to:

List and explain the principles of the Constitution.

Describe the process of ratification and the role played by the Federalist papers.

List and explain the unique problems faced by the Washington administration.

Describe Hamilton’s financial program. Explain the significance of Jefferson’s

“Revolution of 1800.”

Analyze the causes and effects of the Louisiana Purchase. Describe the conflict over slavery and the terms of the Missouri Compromise. Describe the elements of the New Democracy of the 1820s Describe the political innovations of the 1830s. Describe the effects of Irish and German immigration on American society. Explain the importance of Eli Whitney on the development of the factory system. Describe the effects of the early industrial revolution on workers. Describe the changes in American religion and their effects on social reform. Point out the economic strengths and weaknesses of the “Cotton Kingdom.” Describe the lives of non-slaveholding whites and their attitude toward slavery. Describe the life of slaves and free blacks. Describe the growth of the abolitionist cause in the North. Explain the so-called “positive good” theory of slavery. Explain the concept of Manifest Destiny. Describe the consequences of the Mexican War and its effect on the slavery controversy. Describe the origins and goals of the Republican Party. Analyze the election of 1860 and how it contributed to the sectional crisis.

Writing Revolution Skills:The following skill will be emphasized throughout this unit. Students will be expected to be able to demonstrate their ability to use the skill on the exam at the end of the unit.
