Dallas Unit 176 is pleased to nominate Lynne Wood for ACBL Goodwill Member of the Year.

Volunteers are a treasure and the lifeblood for any organization. So often they make a commitment to one group, but not Lynne Wood. She is actively involved in a number of groups and fortunately for us, bridge is one of them.

Lynne has served Unit 176 in a number of capaci-ties for many years. She has served on the Board of Directors. After we lost our longtime business man-ager, Lynne offered to serve. Even though this was a compensated position, Lynne stepped well outside of the guidelines of her position and continued to volunteer at games, sectionals and regionals. Her knowledge of the clubs and the unit organization made her invaluable.

Nowhere has her commitment been more evi-dent than at our Unit Holiday parties. Lynne com-bined bridge with another one of her volunteer groups, The Network, to organize gift giving for chil-dren at Christmas. Our Holiday parties have gar-nered so many toys and games for underprivileged children in the last few years that The Network vol-unteers have had to make multiple trips to get it all. It’s amazing to see how much our program has grown since Lynne has been in charge.

Her volunteerism is not the only great thing about Lynne. She is a pleasure at the table. There is always a greeting and a warm smile for her oppo-nents and a compliment for good play. She’s genu-inely happy for not only her successes, but other players as well. She’s one of those people that you are always glad to see.

Unit 176 Hall of Fame Member: Sidney H. Lazard passed away peacefully at his Dallas home on Nov 3, 2015. He was

a nationally and internationally recognized bridge player who was considered one of the all-time great bridge players. He was

inducted into the ACBL Hall of Fame in 2000. His acclaim as a bridge player goes back to a 1958 Spingold win and continued until

2002 at the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs. He was best known for his strong bidding and confidence in taking risks at the table.

In 2001, Mr. Lazard established the Sidney H. Lazard Jr. Sportsmanship Award in honor of his son, who died in 1999 after

battling cancer. Administered by the ACBL Education Foundation, the award is given annually to a top-level player. The object of

the award is to enhance sportsmanship and to salute those who “play hard but fair and hold no grudges.” Recent award win-

ners are Bob Hamman in 2014, Howard Weinstein in 2015, and Boye Brogeland in 2016.

Fall NABC at Denver, Colorado on Nov. 26—Dec. 6: Did you know that

79,371.64 master points were earned by 3,429,players at this 9,059 table event. That’s a lot of bridge playing! About 37 of Unit 176’s members played winning as much as 243.36 master points to as few as 0.44 master points. Unit 176 members winning more than 60 master points were: Mike Passell at 243.36, John Sutherlin at 175.70, Bart Bramley at 165.18, Hemant Lall at 110.07, Justin Lall at 70.98, and Chris Compton at 65.56.

NOTES From District 16 Many thanks to Table Talk for extending the deadline for me so I could include news for the meeting at the Houston Regional. I'm very excited and proud to report that I have been elected D16 President for 2016. It's already an honor to represent Unit 176 on the D16 Board, so this is truly the icing on the cake for me. I'll be

visiting units throughout D16 in the coming year, so I'm sure to hear new ideas that will benefit our unit as well. Robert Hartman, the CEO of the ACBL, and Ken Monzingo, President of the ACBL. Board of Directors, also attended the meeting in Houston. They dis-cussed the concerns of recent cheating scandals and what is being done at all levels of the game. Efforts are being made at all levels so that our game re-mains fair to all players. The recorder system is being revamped as well. Just remember that at any level, your first responsibility is to CALL THE DIRECTOR anytime you have a question or a concern about a bid or an action. Another policy that was adopted at the meeting affects each and every one of you. All regionals, GNT, and NAP events within D16 will begin enforcing the cell phone policy that is already being used at all NABC events. Cell phones may be taken into the playing area, but may not be used or seen. This means they must stay in your pocket or your purse until you leave the room or all play is over and I hope it goes without saying that they must be turned off or on si-lent. There will be penalties for ringing or visible phones and they will escalate with every infraction. Now is the perfect time to be sure you know how to turn your phone off, before a director appears to assess a penalty. I like to think that they call them smart phones because we are smart enough to use them. This will be in effect at the Fort Worth in April and I sincerely hope our Unit sec-tionals will adopt it as well. That's all for now. I'll see you at the table! ~Tomi FitzGerald

There’s a Writer At the Table: Louis Sacher, the author of The Cardturner, was seen playing at the Fall NABC in Denver where he won 25.48 master points. If you are looking for a fun read, check out his book. And, since he lives in Aus-tin, you might see him at tournaments around Texas where you might even ask for his autograph.

“Aphorism - a short, pointed sen-tence that expresses a wise or clever observation or a general truth.”

No one ever says “It’s only a game” when their team is winning.

I’ve reached the age where “happy hour” is a nap.

Always be yourself because the people that matter don’t mind and the ones that mind don’t matter.

Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks?

A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you’re in deep water.

McKinney Duplicate Bridge Club Hosts College Student

"Bridge for Scholars" is a 4 credited hours course offered during the January Term at Austin Col-

lege in Sherman, Texas. The course is taught by Dr. Truett Cates, who is a member of the McKin-

ney Duplicate Bridge Club (MDBC). There are 40 students enrolled. The course consists of 40

hours of instruction and playing Bridge. Also required is participation in 5 sanctioned ACBL games.

The MDBC hosted the students on January 21, 2016. The MDBC set a new record with 24

1/2 tables (98 participants). The students were fun to play with and they were very good. Bridge

Bridge Mate II System Donation M.O. Crawford made a

generous donation of a Bridge Mate II System to the McKinney Duplicate Bridge Club (MDBC). Our first time to play with the system was at our game on January 14, 2016. This system allows us to have Bridge Mates at 20 tables. The goal is to give Dorsey more time to attend to the bridge play-ers and less time in recording the scores. We appreciate M.O. Crawford's

membership in the MDBC and his generous donation. ~by John Harrelson

Message from the President

Unit 176 ended 2015 with a bang at our great Holiday Unit Game. We kept the momentum going into 2016 by hosting a great tournament January 7-10. Our attendance was up, up, and up. There were big point winners and family fun (see page 5).

The very next weekend, Unit 176 also had a great showing at the District NAP in San Antonio. Several unit members qualified to represent the Unit/District at the National level in Reno this spring. Please join me in congratulating: Bart Bramley for 1st in Flight A, Milt Neher & Scott Nason for 2nd , Robert Schmidt & Ari Sippola for 4th in Flight B, and in Flight C, Stepha-nie Scott and Kristen Onsgard for 3rd and James & Cheryl Rider for 4th.

Our Unit members, Bob and Petra Hamman and Hemant Lall, were on the cover of the January Bridge Bulletin for their fabulous international win. Speak-ing of the Bridge Bulletin, I’d like your help with a trivia question. Which of our Unit members have been on the cover of the Bridge Bulletin? Let’s make a list of names and dates. Send me the ones you know. Hint: there were several of you pictured when Dallas recently hosted the Nationals.

Keep having fun at the bridge table and thanks to all of our many volunteers. ~ Martha Young
