~ The legend of Finn Mc Cool ~ A long time ago there was an Irish giant who was called Finn Mc Cool. One day he challenged his enemy, the Scottish giant Benandonner, to come to Ireland and fight him.

So Finn built a passage across the sea from Ulster to Scotland but he was so exhausted when it was finished that he fell asleep.

Suddenly he heard a tremendous noise. It was the Scottish giant who was walking towards him. Finn was terrified when he realised that Benan-donner was much bigger than him. So he ran back home, where his wife, Oonagh, was waiting for him.

Later on, Oonagh had an idea. She disguised him as a baby to pretend he was their son and put him in the cradle. When Benandonner arrived, she told him her husband was hunting in County Kerry. As soon as the Scottish giant saw the huge ‘baby boy’ he imagined the size of the father and did not want to stay there.

Without waiting around to find out, Benandonner raced back across to Scotland, destroying the causeway as he went, so that Finn could not come after him. And that is why only two fragments of the causeway now remain. In the end Finn came out of the cradle and thanked his wife.

I remember being told, as a young child, of an uncle who was walking home on a cold and dark night. On arriving home he told my grandmother that he had tried to comfort an old woman he had met along the way. Describ-ing her to my grandmother, he said that the old woman was dressed in black with a veil over her face. She was crying outside the house but every time he went over to her she moved away. All the while, she kept pointing at the house. My grandmother, with all her knowledge of the old Irish legends, knew that this old lady was in fact a banshee and hurried my uncle to bed, reas-suring him that she herself would have a look for the old woman. Needless to say, she didn’t dare do such a thing. Then, only three days after this strange encounter, my grandmother’s brother died peacefully in his sleep.
