Key Terms

Benefits – A range of programs that benefit employees; these vary from employer to employer. Bi-weekly – Every two weeks

Bonus – Extra pay earned when certain conditions of employment have been met or exceeded.

Commission – An amount, usually a percentage, paid to someone for a business transaction.

Contract - A legal agreement that outlines terms, conditions and payments for work to be done.

Deductions – Amounts that are subtracted from your gross income.

Gross Pay – The total amount of money earned; also called gross earnings.

Minimum Wage – The minimum amount a worker must be paid an hour; this varies, depending on which province or territory you live in.

Net Pay – Also known as take-home pay; refers to the money paid to an employee after deductions have been made.

Overtime – The time someone works beyond normal working hours and receive overtime pay for (often determined by law)

Pay statement – A form an employer gives an employee that shows earnings and deductions from earnings for a defined pay period. Piecework – When someone is paid a set rate for an amount produced.

Salary – Fixed compensation for services, paid to a person on a regular basis.

Self-employment – A person who works for him or herself rather than for an employer.

Semi-monthly – Twice a month.

Shift Premium – Extra payment for non-standard work hours.

Tip – A voluntary additional payment for services rendered.

Taxable Income – Income on which federal and provincial/territorial tax is paid.

Wage – A financial compensation received by workers in exchange for their labour.

Overtime Many full-time jobs have a 40-hour week, but others may have different regular hours. If you work more than the regular number of hours, it is classified as overtime and you will earn overtime pay for those extra hours. Overtime is often paid at “time and a half” – that is, 1.5 times your regular wage – but can be any other agreed upon amount.

Lesson 4 – Piece Work Self- Employed – A person who works for him or herself rather than for an employer. Piecework – When someone is paid a set rate for an amount produced.

What kind of jobs are paid using piecework?

Example 1: Greg works as a tree planter during the summer and he earns his income through piecework. He is paid $2.50 for each seedling that he plants. If he plants 45 seedlings in a day, how much will he earn?

Example 2: You are selling clothing at a tournament to earn money for your team. You sell t-shirts for $15.00 each, a pair of sweat for $30.00 each, and hoodies for $45.00 each. In one day you sold 40 t-shirts, 22 pairs of sweats, and 38 hoodies. How much did you earn? Example 3: Mary works as a flower arranger. She is paid $143.75 for making 25 identical flower arrangements for a wedding. How much was she paid per arrangement?

Example 1: Ming works in a store that sells furniture. Ming works on commission at a rate of 6.5% of his gross sales. If he sold $9865.00 worth of furniture last week, how much commission did he earn?

Example 2: When selling a home, a real estate agent makes 6% commission on the first $150 000.00 of the home’s selling price and 2% on any amount over that. How much will Sue make if she sells a house worth $250 950.00?

If your work day is 8 hours, and in that day you sold an item priced at $635.99, an item priced at $90.00, 3 items that cost $34.50, and an item priced $201.25, how much did you make that day?
