Harriet comes out of her bedroom. She has a green
notebook. It says “secret” on the cover.
“How many notebooks do you have?” asks Sport.
“I have fourteen notebooks,” Harriet answers. “This
one is number fifteen. I started my first notebook
when I was eight, and I’m only eleven now.”
“Do you spy (מרגלת/تتجسس) on the same people every
day?” asks Sport.
“Yes,” Harriet says. “This year I spy on the Dei Santi
family, Little Joe Curry, the Robinson family, Mr.
Harrison Withers and someone new, Mrs. Plumber.”
Sport looks at Harriet. “Can I spy with you?”

“No,” she answers. “Spies don’t go with friends. It’s too easy to get caught

“I’m writing about all the people I see,” Harriet answers.
“Why?” asks Sport.
