Unit 05.0 Overview of Suppliesfor Water Color

The journey of learning to paint can be exciting and challenging. The materials and equipment one will need, should suit your individual needs.

That choice you make depend on the final effect you want to achieve for each painting that you create.

Sometimes it is hard to explain how the brush and pigments work on your paper until you try using water colors and experimenting.

Start searching for a picture of a landscape in color. I find for the beginner, that landscapes with a sky area seems to be the easiest project to start with., magazines and calendars seem to be the best recourses for image. Write down the reference information as to where you got the picture as I will ask for it later.

your mixing tray and mix a bit of black to the true color.

Make the inside circle the dark shade of the color.

Take a bit more color in your mixing tray away from the shade color and add water to make it lighter.

( Don’t add white water color to paints it dulls the color).

Once you have your photo of your landscape now what ? You will need an art eraser, a strip of scratch water color

paper to test the colors before they are a applied. It is a good idea to take a piece of regular art paper and

practicing the landscape scene before you apply the colors on the water color paper, masking tape, and maybe a spray bottle.

Take a 6 H drawing pencil and lightly sketch a contour line of the landscape. Don’t add any texture or values with the pencil.

A Masonite board or flat clean hard surface that the water color paper can be taped down with the masking tape until project is completed.

Water color brushes-Buy the brushes that you can afford. Sable is ideal but new man-made fibers are acceptable. ½" flat and #12 or #14 round and #6 or #7 for detail.

white areas. If you don’t have a water color palette tray make sure

that you have another plastic plate to mix colors in water container, Purchase what you can afford.

You will need  at least the primary colors such as Lemon Yellow or Hana Yellow, Cadmium Medium Red, Thalo Blue, and Ivory Black. Other colors that might be needed are a brown and green. Depending on your landscape scene you might need more colors. Tints are made by add water to a color to lighten it up. Shades of colors can be made when you add black. (be careful with black a little can do a lot).

 Paper towels are a must.

Very Helpful TipsLightly tape the paper to the board with masking tape and be

very careful when pulling the tape off when you’re done.Practice using the water colors before you put the colors on

the water color paper. See how the paints and brushes move and work on regular art paper. Water coloring techniques are different from acrylic or oil paints as you apply lightest colors to darkest values.

It is important to do complete washes first.A wash is when you get the paper wet with clear clean water,

then apply a very wet color on the wash of water and let the area bleed. This is ideal for a sky area. Let the washes dry before moving to the next area.

You will notice that the water makes the paper curls and ripple. Water color paper will also curl but is made to absorb more water.

Over working any art paper will give you undesirable results.  Dab the color off with a dry paper towel if you make a mistake. Don’t ever rub the paper.
