Script1. Hi! I’m Michael. I’m a 32-year-old white male. I’m
divorced, and I want to try again with the right lady. I like rock music, dancing, and surfing. I’m looking for an attractive woman who likes to party as much as I do. Surfing experience is a plus, but not necessary. If you are willing to learn, I’m willing to teach you!
2. I’m Anita and I’m a 34-year-old African-American woman, I’m single and I work for a major corporation. I’m also very involved with the environmental organization Greenpeace, so respect for nature is a must. I’m looking for a single professional man,35 to 40 , who already has his own life but wants to share quality time. He has to be honest above all else.
3. Hi, my name is Jack. I'm sensitive 28-year-old guy. I’m ready for someone who wants a lifetime of commitment. I'm into bodybuilding, movies, and golf. I have a great job with a good income, so you don’t have to be rich, just fun to be with, but I’m hopeless in the kitchen, so you have to be able to cook. Let’s get to know each other and enjoy life together!
4. My name is Cora, and I’m a single Chinese-American woman. I’m in my mid-twenties. If you love long walks on the beach, candlelight dinners, and intelligent conversation, I’d like to meet you. I want a man who comes from a good family, likes to read, and has a good sense of humor. Are you my “knight in shining armor”?

Script My mother was born in a small town in northern Italy. She was three
when her parents immigrated to America in 1926. They lived in Chicago, where my grandfather worked making ice-cream. Mama thrived in the urban environment. At 16, she graduated first in her high school class, went on to secretarial school and finally worked as an executive secretary for a rare wood company. She was beautiful too. When a local photographer used her pictures in his monthly window display, she felt pleased. Her favorite portrait showed her sitting by Lake Michigan, her hair wind-blown, her gaze reaching towards the horizon. My parents were married in 1944. Dad was a quiet and intelligent man. He was 17 when he left Italy. Soon after, a hit-and-run accident left him with a permanent limp. Dad worked hard selling candy to Chicago office workers on their break. He had little formal schooling. His English was self-taught. Yet he eventually built a small successful whole-sale candy business. Dad was generous
and handsome. Mama was devoted to him.
Script
After she married, my mother quit her job and gave herself to her family. In 1950, with three small children, Dad moved the family to a farm 40 miles from Chicago. He worked the land and commuted to the city to run his business. Mama said good-bye to her parents and friends and traded her busy city neighborhood for a more isolated life. But she never complained.
Questions 26 to 28 are based on the passage you have just heard:
26. What does the speaker tell us about his mother’s early childhood?
27. What do we learn about the speaker’s father?
28. What does the speaker say about his mother?

How do you think people get their personalities?

A: How do you think people get their personalities?B: I think it’s mainly from the environment a person lives
it.A: Don’t you think people get their personalities from
their parents?B: No, but parents control a lot of the environment that
kids grow up in, so they certainly influence their kid’s personalities a lot.
A: So why do you think many kids have personalities that are so different to their parents.
B: Maybe when they become teenagers, they want to be completely different to their parents.
Possible Argument
A: You might be right. I guess most parents want their kids to be like them, but kids today grow up in a different environment. You know, they know much more about the world from the internet, newspapers, and TV.
B: Do you think that teenagers get a lot of their bad behavior from TV and movies?
A: Maybe some of it. I think a lot of people blame TV and movies when the real problem is that the parents aren’t bringing their child up correctly.
B: Parents have a difficult job. They have to bring up their children and usually have to work too.
Possible Argument
A: Yes, that’s fine. Your son is doing well at school, isn’t he?
B: Yes, he is. He’s very hardworking when he’s at school. Then he comes home from school and does homework before dinner. After dinner, he goes out with his friends.
A: So, he’s not a bookworm? It’s good that he has an outgoing personality. Some kids are very quiet and introverted. You wonder they’ll survive in the real world without their parents to support them.
Possible Argument
