There are 4 classifications of British road system.

M roads are motorways which go long-distance and are free of pedestrian traffic,

A roads are major routes that go from city to city,

B roads are minor roads that usually go from towns, villages to cities,

unclassified roads which are small roads that are usually country lanes.
