From the DRE

Amy Wright Glenn UUFBR Director of Religious Education

We begin April 2019 with a focus on Sustainability. What does it mean to celebrate and embody the 7th UU Principle? How can we help nurture the connection our children have with the earth and her non-human creatures? Part of our focus will be on supporting families to spend more time unplugged from screens and enjoying the outdoors. Whether we gather at the beach or go for nature walks as a family, we model for our children how we can best connect to the simply beauty of sky, trees, water, and land. I encourage families to spend more time outdoors and leave their phones at home for nature walks. Simply soak in time together and nourish mindfulness of the beauty around you.

As part of RE for the month of April, we will spend quality time outdoors as a group, walking the labyrinth, watercoloring and of course, working together in preparation for a wonderful Easter service where the themes of sustainability, renewal, hope, etc. are expressed through pre-Christian and Christian symbols. For those new to Unitarian Universalism, please know that our tradition draws upon the beauty and wisdom and truth of many world traditions as we affirm the liberty of each of our members to craft meaning according to her or his own conscience.

Finally, mark your calendar for a special UUFBR Friends and Families Bowling adventure on our last pre-summer service. More info forthcoming, for now, simply note that after church on Sunday, June 2nd, all UUFBR Families are welcome to come bowling with the RE crew!

At 6:00pm the children can be dropped off at Harris’s house for the kind of fun and food only Harris can offer. The adults will make their way to the VanCamp household which is less than two miles away. Bring $5 to donate to Harris for child care, food and beverages, and bring a dish to share with the adults. This is a BYOB event for the adults. Feel free to bring whatever beverage you want for yourself or to share. And if you get off work and just can’t bring anything, don’t stress about it, just show up. There will always be plenty to share. Need directions? Contact Dave by email or phone 561-309-2944.

Starting at 7:00pm in the Palm Beach County Convention Center, 650 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, FL 33401.

Get on the bus! The UUFBR bus leaves the parking lot at 6:00pm sharp!

Carpool leaves at 6:15pm sharp! Sign up to get on the bus for PEACE. Anyone and everyone is encouraged to come! Bring your friends!

We do this every year to join hundreds of voices demanding justice for our most vulnerable neighbors – the homeless, the undocumented, and children who are wrongly criminalized.

Every single one of those voices is important, including yours. Making a difference is easy as showing up.

So don’t miss the bus! Make a difference this year. PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts) is a justice ministry organization made up of 20 different congregations throughout Palm Beach County. Recognizing that to do justice requires power, we come together in large numbers of people to hold our political and economic systems accountable around serious community problems. UUFBR is a member congregation.

As always, reach out with any questions. Thank you for taking part in PEACE to make life better for our less fortunate neighbors! THIS is how to make a difference. In Solidarity,Gabi AleksinkoPEACE @ UUFBR Team [email protected]

This year!!! I suppose I could stop here... knowing that each of us would most likely end the sentence with something negative that has assaulted and captured our attention. The result has been individual and collective stress. My Healing Justice mind knows more about how it must feel to be black or a person of any shade of color in the USA and across the world. Racism flourishes amid political strife and uncertainly for all of us. When I say that, I feel activity running amok with no place to light in the front of my brain. I am NOT OK WITH THIS!! At the same time I am not quite sure what to do to make a positive contribution. So, this month, I am taking a rest from the stress of the horrific news. I need a rest from the negative. That doesn't mean totally backing away although that would be OK for a while. What AM I doing?

1. I am not burying my head in the sand. Instead, I am buying a brand new book by Nicholas A. Christakis, Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society, 2019, Little Brown Spark publishers. A strong advocate for free speech, Christakis sees hope, despite the fear, hatred, violence and ignorance that surround us. We are wired for community and good. Today I need that message. 2. I will continue my journey toward justice by attending our Healing Justice meeting. At this meeting we will work toward taking our next steps in the struggle for racial justice. Reggie Harris and Greg Greenway challenged us at their concert, Deeper than the Skin: Building Bridges with Music (UUFBR March 18) to continue to tell our stories and recognize that "...most of us are good people, but our systems are not."

Healing Justice meets Thursday, April 4, at 7:00 PM in the Living Room of UUFBR. Come join us as we share our stories and move one more step toward a positive future. Please, bring your thoughts and ideas about our next steps.

This Easter is the perfect day to invite someone to UUFBR - a friend who is spiritual but not religious, a family that blends different religious traditions, or someone who is hungry for community but not sure where to look. The service will show them how a group of people can be free in faith and respectful of the wisdom of the past. The Bounce House and intergenerational egg hunt following the service will show them

how we can enjoy the day and laugh together.

Next Bounce House Sunday is April 21 Easter Sunday

Acupuncture and herbal medicine can be used to treat a wide variety of health complaints, either as a stand- alone treatment or in conjunction with other modalities. Many people simply enjoy that acupuncture makes them feel good, and allows them to better cope with stress and

emotional issues. Erica has a Masters in Oriental Medicine (4-year program) from Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (New York City), and has been practicing acupuncture and herbal medicine for 11 years. In this professional clinic, treatments are given in a community setting, meaning that a handful of patients will relax and receive acupuncture in the same room at the same time. This community method allows cost to stay low for both practitioner and patient. After a private consultation with Erica, patients move to a massage table or comfortable recliner where they can receive a treatment and then relax and heal in a quiet, serene environment.Fees are on a sliding scale of $25-$50 per treatment, with each patient deciding what he or she can afford for each treatment. There is an initial consultation fee of $10. The traditional model which prevails in the United States - that of charging patients up to $200 for private acupuncture in a spa-like setting, has made Chinese medicine unaffordable for most. Community acupuncture opens the door to the many who could benefit from treatment, but who could not previously afford it. Moreover, the pricing structure allows many people to come very frequently, which is how acupuncture works best. Erica can be reached at [email protected] or by cell 718-541-4931 to answer any questions or to book an appointment.

Earth Day is April 22. I came across this article online at uuworld.org. I hope you’ll find it interesting. ~ Gail

Unitarian Universalist youth were among the hundreds of thousands of students around the world who skipped school on Friday, March 15, to demand immediate political action in order to slow climate change and save the planet.

The Friday youth strikes began last summer in Sweden with a single teen, Greta Thunberg, and have since spread to over one hundred countries, with the biggest event so far taking place on March 15.

In Tallahassee, Florida, Charlotte Stuart-Tilley, a homeschooled eighth-grader and member of the UU Church of Tallahassee, said about 100 students and supporters, including at least ten UUs, attended the strike at the Florida state capitol, which she organized. Inspired by Thunberg, Stuart-Tilley started hosting school strikes every other Friday, beginning on January 18.

Stuart-Tilley emphasized to UU World that climate change is having a particularly devastating effect on marginalized communities and low-income areas around the world. “It’s wrong for

Young Unitarian Universalists helped organize student walkouts in several cities on March 15 to demand action on climate change.

us to promote environmental racism by being part of the problem instead of part of the solution,” she said. Her congregation and its minister, the Rev. William Levwood, have “done a good job” focusing on climate justice and the fact that climate change “doesn’t just affect you, it affects those around us,” she said.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, Asha Pruitt, a senior in a public high school and a member of First Unitarian Church of Salt Lake City, was among those who helped organize a strike on the steps of the Utah state capitol that drew several hundred students and others, according to news reports.

Pruitt and a friend, Mishka Banuri, primary organizer and co-founder of Utah Youth Environmental Solutions, did grassroots organizing through social media and by partnering with local environmental groups. The sound system for the approximately two-hour event, which featured diverse speakers stressing the importance of addressing climate change, was powered by eight bicycles that people took turns pedaling, Pruitt said. At least three or four other UU youth were there, she added.

“The First Principle [of Unitarian Universalism], of the inherent worth and dignity of every person or every being, that’s core to this movement,” said Pruitt, “because we have to respect each other and our children and their futures and the land we stand on. The earth itself has inherent worth and dignity, and that needs to be addressed.”

In Middlebury, Vermont, where he is a freshman at Middlebury College, Connor Wertz and friends organized a strike in a downtown park, which drew hundreds of high school and college students and supporters, and featured such speakers as Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org.

Wertz, who is a member of the UU Church of Haverhill, Massachusetts, and now attends Champlain Valley UU Society in Middlebury, said at least five to ten UUs joined the strike, including his twin brother Aidan Wertz, also a Middlebury freshman.

Connor Wertz was the first speaker at the strike, where he urged support for the Green New Deal as well as the end to building any more fossil fuel infrastructure. Asking government leaders to listen to youth, Wertz said, “We are asking for your actions. We are asking for your vote, your body, your tongue, your arms and wrists and your will. That’s what we need to make the change that needs to happen,” according to a report in the Middlebury Campus newspaper.

“My UU values inform this work in every aspect,” said Wertz, who in 2016 was arrested as he protested construction of the West Roxbury Lateral Pipeline, a natural gas pipeline that Boston-area UUs and others fought for two years on climate justice and safety grounds. The charges against Wertz were dropped. Despite objections, including a lawsuit by the City of Boston, the pipeline was built.

Wertz, Pruitt, and Stuart-Tilley are involved in environmental justice on a number of fronts in addition to organizing their local school strikes.

After years of activism by students, a movement that Wertz became a part of last fall, Middlebury College in January decided to divest from fossil fuel companies, Wertz  said. He

traveled in December to Washington, D.C., with the Sunrise Movement, a youth movement to stop climate change, to urge support for the Green New Deal.Stuart-Tilley plans to continue with the biweekly school strikes for the near future and continue working with government officials to try to get Florida to ban fracking.
