The following activities are proposed to be carried out under the first phase:

Identif $cation of two suitable pilot institutions to assist research and training functions of the project on subregional basis and to provide technical assistance to improve professional effectiveness.

The institutions will collect comprehensive information on field situations relating to education and integrated rural development and conduct studies on the material collected.

Operational seminars and various types of workshops and communication support programmes will be organized in order to secure people's participation and develop methodologies for training of personnel, specialists and managers of educational programmes for integrated rural development.

Joint evaluation will be undertaken in order to prepare guidelines for future action and formulate the second phase of the project.

Remarks :

The project develops further.and extends to the field (at national level) past and ongoing activ-ities in favour of LDCs. It meets the wishes of members of the Executive Board and the recommendations of Harare and Bangkok regional conferences and other Unesco meetings.

Title :

Locally produced laboratory equipment for science and engineering research and teaching.' .

Purpose :

To provide practical solutions to the existing shortage and problems of maintenance of equipment used in research and teaching of science and engineering in the deve- loping countries, by producing laboratory equipment tailor-made for local require- ments low in cost yet of high quality and that can easily be serviced locally.

Design and manufacture of 30 prototypes of selected pieces of laboratory equipment (including instruction manuals).

Specialized training of some 250 scientists, engineers and technicians in the manu- facture and maintenance of the equipment.

Assistance to university teachers for incorporating these pieces of equipment in their curricula.

Promotion of university/industry co-operation in order to encourage the local manu- facture' of the tested equipment.

Remarks :

The project will draw on the joint resources of participating developing countries through arrangements within the framework of technical co-operation amongst devel- oping countries (TCDC) .

Title:

Integrated Interregional Demonstration Training and Technolow Transfer Project for New and. Renewable Sources of Energy (NRSE) .

Purpose :

Development, testing and application of multi-media learning packages (based on micro-computers); an interactive decision-making kit and film or video tape to train, sensitize and teach various user groups in different LDCs and especially Portuguese- speaking countries in Africa in the field of NRSE.

Expected results:

A cadre of training energy specialists in each of the Portuguese-speaking African countries who could contribute to their country's energy planning effort as well as a more energy-conscious rural population in the same countries to lessen their dependence on imported energy and increase their indigenous industrial base to produce energy from new and renewable sources.

Remarks :

The actions are designed to promote TCDC while simultaneously providing support for the development of national energy planning, training and technology transfer infra- structures.

Title:

Regional Network for the Exchange of Information and Experience in Science and Technolo= In Asia and the Pacific (ASTINFO) .

Purpose:

To follow up the decision of CASTASIA I1 on the above by creating national data bases interconnecting information sources and introducing new/upgraded information services.
