You trust United Way of Story County (UWSC) to continuously monitor the changing landscape of human service needs in our communities and respond for the betterment of Story County. With your support we’ve been doing just that. Due to the success of the annual campaign and increased endowment donations, individuals and families in Story County are able to help their children continue to learn during the summer months, train locally for in-demand employment, and keep our senior neighbors safe in their homes. UWSC is in a position to forecast anticipated needs and ready our community to bring solutions. As we look ahead, there will be the opportunity to invest in program expansion and growth that will improve the quality of life for everyone. The total to fund NEW solutions for Story County is in excess of $300,000. This is in addition to continued support for the programs that we know have been working for many years in our community. Here’s a look at some of the things that can be achieved when we work together: • Expanding the scope of the Iowa Reading Corps by increasing the number of AmeriCorps members from 7 to 12 will cost slightly over $50,000. Trained members will provide daily reading tutoring to over 300 children in grades Kindergarten through third. During the 2015/16 school year, AmeriCorps members worked with over 160 students. This fall members will be placed in 12 elementary schools representing all 7 school districts in Story County. Ensuring that students are reading proficiently by the end of third grade will equip them with the skills needed to be successful academically. • Investing over $40,000 in homeless prevention services will increase the number of individuals and families staying in their homes. Families in need will be provided with emergency assistance such as food vouchers, personal items and food from local pantries, and funds for emergency rent and utility assistance. This type of assistance is far less costly than supporting that same individual or family through emergency shelter or transitional living programs. • Providing an additional $46,000 in preventive dental care to uninsured and underinsured individuals and children will help keep them healthier overall. We know that dental pain can cause employees to miss work and children to stay home from school. Families with low incomes can’t afford to take time off from work, and struggling readers need that instructional support that only being in the classroom can offer. UWSC announces Yvonne Kinzler as 2016 Campaign Chair. Yvonne’s connection with UWSC spans decades and includes one-to-one mentoring with Women with Initiative, where Yvonne helped at-risk women understand personal finance topics and build self-sufficiency. In her role as campaign chair, Yvonne will work with businesses and community members to build capacity for UWSC’s work. "UWSC is a leader in our community in identifying core issues and building lasting, community-driven solutions. I look forward to building a stronger community effort through the 2016 campaign," said Yvonne.

Following Yvonne will be 2017 Campaign Chair, Dan Culhane. Over the coming months, Dan will head the leadership portion of the drive. Dan just finished his UWSC Board of Directors term of six years. "Having worked with UWSC for a number of years, I have seen the lasting impact this organization is making in Story County. I am excited to continue to build on this momentum over the next couple of years," Dan said.

UnitedWayHasUnprecedentedTocquevilleCampaignEvery gift to UWSC is meaningful and put to work to help others. Those gifts within the Tocqueville Society have a profound impact on how UWSC can act on its mission. Since 2007, UWSC has had at least one Tocqueville donor each year. However, over the last three campaigns, UWSC’s Tocqueville Campaign has been transformed.

As we head into the 2016 campaign, we’re concentrating our volunteer efforts to follow the enthusiasm for the Tocqueville Society. David Spalding, Dean of the College of Business, has accepted the role of Tocqueville Campaign Chair. David and other volunteers will be reaching out to loyal supporters to invite them to make a plan for Tocqueville giving. His passion for the mission of UWSC is inspiring.
