‹ Message from the Commonwealth Secretary-General ›
Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth was
inaugurated on Commonwealth Day
2014 and was immediately
embraced as a pioneering and innovative new way for people to celebrate the Commonwealth in local communities. Flags were raised at over 750 places across the Commonwealth in 2015, and all looks set for there to be more than 1,000 local ceremonies and celebrations on Commonwealth Day 2016.
This is a remarkable trajectory and shows the extent to which Fly-a-Flag for the Commonwealth is capturing the imagination of people of all ages and proving its value as a means by which we can join together with others in more widespread public expression of appreciation for the Commonwealth, the opportunities it offers, and the values it stands for. We welcome and applaud this imaginative initiative.
Our Commonwealth flag is our shared symbol of a unique global community in which every citizen is celebrated for his or her own uniqueness. Our flag unites us wherever we are around the globe.
Great advances have been made by the Commonwealth through the goodwill, trust, and mutual respect that bind us together as members of a worldwide family. We build for the future on rich inheritances and shared values of democracy, development and diversity, with special concern for the richness of our identities, inclusiveness, for women, and for youth. These contributions to the global good, and the spirit in which they were achieved, deserve greater public recognition. Fly-a-Flag for the Commonwealth is a way for all of us to take part in spreading the message.
Concern for the welfare of all and the advancement of each is central to our
Commonwealth commitment, and so it is entirely appropriate and welcome that individuals in local communities should gather to mark Commonwealth Day. There are many ways in which initiatives at local level can enhance appreciation of the Commonwealth by its citizens and help to communicate the many practical ways in which the Commonwealth makes a difference around the world.
Fly-a-Flag is an opportunity to mark Commonwealth Day, wherever we may be, and at the same time to consider the personal and community contributions we can make towards shaping our collective future. We can each find mutual enrichment
through establishing links with fellow Commonwealth citizens in other member states through the rich networks of accredited Commonwealth organisations that work for our common good.
Reflection on the global wisdom that the Commonwealth represents can be combined with celebration as we raise the flag for Commonwealth Day with pride in our shared inheritance, and dedicate ourselves afresh to progress and prosperity, with equality, equity, and opportunity for all.
His Excellency Kamalesh SharmaCommonwealth Secretary-General

‹ Introduction from the Originator & Pageantmaster of Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth ›
The overwhelming success and high level of participation in Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth in its first two years gives us great confidence for the future of this unique annual celebration. I hope you will join us on Commonwealth Day 2016 as we prepare to commemorate an association of 53 independent and equal sovereign states - a family of nations.
Commonwealth Day 2015 saw more than 750 Commonwealth flags raised by local authorities, town and parish councils, youth organisations and community groups throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories and Commonwealth in a shared moment of celebration.
For the first time in Maritime History, all the 11 ships of P&O Cruises and Cunard Line raised the Commonwealth flag on board ship at 10am local time, wherever they were in the world at that time.
I am delighted to confirm that the oldest person in the World to raise the Commonwealth flag on the 9th March 2015, was World War II Veteran, John Howes, who celebrated his 100th Birthday in 2015. (Please see picture above centre)
Later that day, before the annual Commonwealth Observance, the final flag was raised by His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
It was the largest single co-ordinated raising of the Commonwealth flag in the 50-year history of the organisation and, to the delight all those attending ceremonies around the UK, a message of support and
encouragement was read from Her Majesty The Queen, Head of the Commonwealth.
Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth will increase in size and stature over the next few years, involving all of the countries of the Commonwealth and growing into a global celebration.
In 2016 we will be encouraging Commonwealth countries to raise the Commonwealth flag in their capital cities at 10am local time on 14th March as part of a multi-cultural event across the time zones, starting in Tonga with the support and involvement of the Girl Guide Association of the Kingdom of Tonga.
We are confident that those who participated in 2014 and 2015 will take part again, opening up their events to schools and an even wider range of local community groups and organisations.
With the generous support and involvement of the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) and One Voice Wales we are encouraging all the town and parish councils in England and Wales, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man to participate. The community councils in Scotland have been invited to join us too.
Once again, we are encouraging the involvement of youth organisations and schools throughout the Commonwealth, to provide them with a unique educational platform. As part of the 2016 celebrations we will be urging everyone taking part, especially schools, to support one of the charities shown on pages 17-22 by organising an educational project to help people understand some of the problems that millions of Commonwealth citizens face in their daily lives.
I do hope that you will join our international celebration. Please go to page five of this publication and follow steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 providing us with the requested information by no later than the 31st January 2016.

J. W. Plant & Co Ltd are proud to be nominated as the official flag supplier for the Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth project. We have been the official supplier to the project from its conception and played a key role in establishing the official Commonwealth Flag specification to be used for the project.
The key factors in deciding the flag specification were, value for money, quality, durablity, visual impact. Above all the finished item had to reflect the look and feel of the project, and help capture the enthusiasm of those taking part.
JW Plant have expanded the range of items available for the 2016 Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth Day. We are offering two standard sizes of flags which will be bulk produced. These flags will be fully dye printed with water dispersed high energy automative grade dyes, onto a 155gsm woven polyester bunting. They are environmently friendly, washable and designed for reuse.
The sizes will be 90” x 54” as per previous years and 60” x 36”. Any other sizes required are available and will be maunfactured using a combination of a printed design appliqued to a woven polyester background.
We would suggest the following size guidelines 90” x 54” flags to be flown from freestanding flagpoles 8m (25ft) and above, wall mounted and roof mounted flagpoles of at least 3m at a height of at least 10m (30ft.) 60” x 36” flags to be flown from freestanding flagpoles around 5-6m (15-20ft), wall mounted and roof mounted flagpoles of at least 2-3m at a height of at least 4-6m (20-25ft). When making your final choice you should consider the flag proportion to that of any building or surrounding. Creating balance should be the primary objective.
FlagpolesFor 2016 J.W. Plant & Co Ltd will be offering a selected range of flagpoles to compliment the two standard flag sizes available. Other flagpoles are available on request.

‹ Overview of the Commonwealth ›
The Commonwealth ismade up of fifty-three
sovereign statesworking together
in mutual support towards shared goals
of democracy, development, and respect for diversity. It includes some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries, with two billion citizens drawn from all faiths and ethnicities, half of them under 25 years old.
Beyond the ties of history, language and institutions, members are united by values set out in the Charter of the Commonwealth including tolerance, freedom of expression, respect for human rights, the rule of law, protecting the environment, access to health, education, food and shelter, and gender equality.
Commonwealth countries come together voluntarily in a spirit of co-operation, partnership and understanding, and are located in six regions:Africa (18)Asia (8)the Americas (3)the Caribbean (10)Europe (3)and the South Pacific (11)

GAFFI has teamed up with Fly a Flag for the Common-wealth to flag up a global catastrophe.
The Global Action Fund for Fungal Infections(GAFFI), is an international organisation set up toreverse an upward trend in unnecessary deathsand suffering across the Commonwealth andworldwide.
Fungal infections kill at least 1,350,000 patients with or following AIDS, cancer, TB and
asthma as well as causing untold misery andblindness to millions more. Fungal meningitis and pneumonia kills in excess of
one million patients with AIDS every year, includingmany children, before treatment for HIV can begin to work.
Blindness caused by fungal infection of the eye in young farmers andsome children affects more than one million people because the tools arenot available for rapid diagnosis and treatment.
GAFFI has a stellar international Board and Advisor group from the UK,USA, Brazil, India, Australia, Spain, Switzerland, Norway and Japan toguide the Foundation’s work as it begins its many tasks to help patientsand support and educate doctors and nurses across the Commonwealth.
It is lead by founding President, Professor David Denning, who isbased at The University of Manchester. He says the partnership with Fly
a Flag is both welcome and timely.
people DIEevery hour from fungal infection:Fly A Flag partners GAFFI tohighlighttheir plight
Award-winning stage and screenactor, Rupert Everett, haspledged to help GAFFI raiseawareness among health professionals and the public.
He says: “ I understand fromthe experts that fungal diseasestend to be complicated, requir-ing specialised diagnostic skills.
“Only when it is too late is the diagnosis possible on clinicalgrounds, but even then manyconditions overlap.
“The tragedy is that many ofthe best drugs have been available in some countries for40 to 50 years, yet not wherethey are now most needed.”
150
GAFFI requires substantial funding to deliver its mission. Current fundraising is focussed on major donoragencies and philanthropists from around the world. To make a contribution to GAFFI’s work, please
contact [email protected] or for more information visit www.gaffi.org
“A lack of basic fungal diagnosticcapability and unavailable treat-ments in many Commonwealthcountries results in millions ofavoidable deaths and illness. Yet,together, we can raise awarenessof their plight and ensure the drugsare made available where they aremost needed.
“GAFFI changed the lives ofthese children.Together we can doso much more to help tens of thou-sands of others like themwho suffer needlessly.”

Nurturing links in the commonwealthWe value our relationships throughout the commonwealth. Some examples include: Our Ambassador Anne Wafula Strike MBE, who is Paralympic wheelchair racer, was born in Kenya, and through her charity work continues to make life better for people around the world.
We work closely with Rotary who continue to play an active role in eradicating Polio around the world. The British Polio Fellowship was awarded the Association of Pakistani Physicians 2014 Appreciation Award in recognition of our support in the eradication of Polio in Pakistan.
We have close ties with The Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF), a charitable, non-governmental organisation founded by Sir Emeka Offor, who is the also the Chairman of Chrome Group, a multinational company based in Nigeria.
For more information please visit our website www.britishpolio.org.uk or call 0800 018 0586 or email [email protected]
Polio has been eradicated from most of the world, however The British Polio Fellowship continue to support efforts to eradicate the virus globally.
The British Polio FellowshipHard at work at home and overseas
The British Polio Fellowship is proud to have supported the eradication of Polio in most of the commonwealth. This is largely due a highly successful vaccination programme. Polio is still a problem in Pakistan and Nigeria, largely due to the difficulties of ensuring all children in these countries get vaccinated and we continue to support the effort to eradicate Polio in these countries.
The British Polio Fellowship is a charity dedicated to helping, supporting and empowering approximately 120,000 people in the UK living with the late effects of Polio and Post Polio Syndrome (PPS), a neurological condition. It provides information, welfare and support to those living with the effects of Polio, enabling all to live full independent and integrated lives.
There is more work to be done
While The British Polio Fellowship is wholly committed to the eradication process and we cannot support the Vaccination Program enough, we believe that there is a ticking time bomb in the form of PPS. We applaud the success that many commonwealth countries have achieved with vaccination and eradication, however we need to get the message out there that the many thousands (if not millions) of people who have had Polio in the past are more than likely going to need help coping with the late effects of Polio and PPS.

“As Chairman of the Flags & Heraldry Committee and Polar Regions (Arctic & Antarctic) All Party Parliamentary Groups, it gives me great pleasure to support the flying of the Commonwealth Flag to celebrate Commonwealth Day. I am particularly proud to hear that the British Antarctic Survey will be doing so again in 2016.
The Commonwealth of Nations is an invaluable and intrinsic part of what it means to be British. With Her Majesty The Queen at its Head, combined with the excellent work it does in nations far and wide, the Commonwealth is an institution we should all take immense pride in. The Commonwealth should be celebrated and what better way to do that, than to fly the Commonwealth Flag so I look forward to seeing it flying all over the nation and the Commonwealth on 14th March 2016.

“British Antarctic Survey is proud to be supporting Commonwealth Day, 2016. The Commonwealth aspires to be a “family” of nations. In a similar way, the scientists and support staff employed by BAS consider themselves to be part of an international family in Antarctica whose members are dedicated to peace and science and working towards a better understanding of our planet. To mark Commonwealth Day the Commonwealth flag will be flying at BAS’ two permanent research stations in Antarctica, Rothera and Halley VI.”

Few design agencies have the privilege of working on projects of national significance.
From celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion to Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth, TMS Media has had the pleasure of working with pageantmaster Bruno Peek on events that celebrate many important milestones in our history and culture.
Much of Bruno’s work has royal associations. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons project, for example, was a high-profile televised celebration for which we designed a guide to taking part and a website for people and organisations to register events around the country.
Our creative work for the hugely successful Fly a Flag for the Commonwealth in 2013 also included a website and a guide, which has been updated to showcase some of the many exciting events that took place in its inaugural year.
We’re delighted to be the pagemasters to the pageantmaster.
