Liam Eshghi -BA (Hons) Design (Illustration & Animation)

Liam secured a full-time Motion Graphics role at Workhouse Marketing where he undertook his work placement shortly before he finished his BA (Hons) Design (Illustration & Animation) degree. He proudly holds a First Class Honours degree.

“I am thrilled that I’ve been able to secure full-time employment at Workhouse Marketing. It was definitely the right thing studying at University Centre at Blackburn College. It’s great that I was offered the job even before I’d received my final grades. Workhouse chose to take me on based on their relations with my tutor and the work they’d already seen from me.”

Joanne Lewis -LLB (Hons) Law

Joanne gained a First Class Honours degree from University Centre at Blackburn College. She completed the accelerated route law degree whilst working at Blackburn-based legal practice, Roebucks Solicitors, and is now a fully-qualified solicitor after successfully completing a training contract with the firm.

“Blackburn was a great place to study. It was such a great environment to study in. The tutors were fantastic and always available – you could knock on the door and they would always make time for you. I had the option to go to other Universities, but I chose to stay at Blackburn College because it’s on my doorstep and the tutors really do have your best interests at heart.”

Financial Support£1,000 Bonus for full-time eligible students.

8

Full time undergraduates will receive an annual £1,000 cash bonus provided they meet initial and continuing eligibility requirements which can be found at www.blackburn.ac.uk/1000-bonus

Once your initial eligibility has been determined, you will be scheduled to receive the bursary in three instalments provided you meet continuing eligibility requirements. The payments will be subject to satisfactory attendance and satisfactory progress checked periodically during the year. Satisfactory attendance will be determined based on records of student attendance in class registers checked periodically. If, when checked, your attendance is below 90% of classes in the checking period you risk not receiving a payment.

Because of the initial and continuing eligibility criteria, you must not make any financial plans in which you assume you will receive this bursary until you actually receive a payment.

Sara-Louise Dobson -BA (Hons) History & Sociology

“I first met the Student Finance team before I started studying my BA (Hons) History & Sociology degree. I had slightly unusual circumstances and was unsure if I would get any funding before I started my course. The advisor put everything in place to ensure that I could not only start but also stay on the course and also meant that my main focus could be my studies and not financial worries.

The advisor gave me so much confidence - knowing everything was sorted was brilliant. I strongly believe that without their help I wouldn’t have been able to motivate myself to get everything in place. I’m thoroughly enjoying my studies – the lowest grade I’ve received so far has been a B+. I’m so grateful for their support.”

Natalie ShafiqFdA Criminology & Criminal Justice

“The Student Finance team helped me with everything. I tried to go it alone applying for Student Finance at first but when you ring the general Student Finance England helpline number you go through to a call centre whereas dealing with the Student Finance team at the University Centre you can talk face to face.

The team helped me access emergency loans as my money from Student Finance didn’t come through. They were good at handling my situation and were able to reassure me that everything would be ok. They were just really understanding and helpful.”

Peter McVeigh -BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management

“I chose this course in Blackburn because of the size of classes and the fact it’s seminar-based rather than lecture-based. With smaller numbers, you can have more of an input and get that added extra help. And with the seminars, it means you can throw ideas around and develop them more rather than being talked at. It all relates to a job.

I was offered jobs with both Galliford Try and Turner and Townsend but chose to accept the position of Operations and Maintenance Coordinator at Galliford Try. I will be on-site, overseeing budgets, the work schedule and liaising with the design teams.”

Cathy Callus -BA (Hons) Education Studies

“I worked in export in the champagne industry for 20 years and then when I was taking some time out of work I was asked if I’d be interested in teaching English at my daughter’s school. It’s something I had never done before but not only did I enjoy it, I was actually quite good at it.

I came back home to England, enrolled at University Centre at Blackburn College and now I’m on track to becoming a fully qualified teacher. But I’ve fallen extremely lucky since Edisford Bridge Primary School are now funding me through my PGCE placement. It’s been a fast-track process, but hopefully by spring I should be a fully qualified primary school teacher.”

Supporting you to achieveWe know that the level of support we provide is one of the key reasons why more and more people are choosing to come to University Centre at Blackburn College. Starting something new can be daunting. We understand your needs and know that it can help to have a structured system that provides much needed extra support.

Small Class SizesOur small class sizes mean we get to know all of our students individually and feel confident we can support you before, during and after your studies. Rather than being a face in a crowd in a large lecture theatre, you will typically work in classes of around 12 to 20 students. The tutor will know your name and the smaller class sizes are more similar to a work environment – you will find it easier to ask questions, debate ideas and fully understand your subject.

Dedicated Support TeamsWe have a range of specialist, dedicated support teams who will be on hand during your learning journey with us. These include support from our Disability Services team, Careers and Job Advice, Student Finance team, Well-being and Mental Health services and many more who will be on hand to help you should you need it. We also have a dedicated Chaplaincy Team for your religious well-being.

Personal TutorsHere at UCBC every student has a Personal Tutor to provide academic and pastoral support, including several scheduled one to one meetings, together with a programme of study skills to help make the transition through Higher Education a little easier.

Student Engagement TeamRight from the word go our Student Engagement Team will be on hand to support you with your academic studies. A large part of what the team does is provide guidance on writing essays or exam and revision techniques, or even getting to know how to write a bibliography or use a package such as Microsoft Powerpoint to the best of your ability. This is particularly useful if it has been a long time since you have written coursework or an essay or a long time since you have had to take an exam.

Shanaz Sardar -FdA Early Childhood Studies

“Studying at UCBC is a rewarding, life-shaping experience, created by a friendly environment and a nice atmosphere. Being a single parent with 2 children and suffering with depression, it was not easy to achieve my goal without support. A warm welcome was always shown by the tutors helping in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. I received support from the Disability Services team at University Centre at Blackburn College and support from the Mental Health and Well-Being Advisor. They supported me throughout my hard times. Without their support I could not have achieved my goal. My two boys are proud of their Mum!”

Sophie Skellern -BA (Hons) Fine Art (Integrated Media)

“I was originally studying in Bournemouth but I realised that it just wasn’t for me so, on undertaking some research into Blackburn, I decided to give it a try. When I rang up and spoke to the tutor he was so friendly and inviting, I knew I had to transfer. Blackburn has been really rewarding and I definitely have no regrets. On transferring to Blackburn, I learnt that I was dyslexic. I have had tests done before but I didn’t really get anywhere with them, but the support I received from Blackburn really impacted upon my university experience.

The support I received really helped me and I can’t thank the College enough for that. Now I work for Blackburn with Darwen Council as part of the art service. It really is my perfect job.”

Cara Williams -FdA Disability Studies (Inclusive Practice)

“I attended an Open Evening at UCBC and immediately knew this is where I wanted to study. In comparison to other institutions, it has modern facilities, extremely friendly staff and students and the academic results speak for themselves.

I am now in my first year and am loving it. I have a student placement within a primary school with children who have additional needs. My foundation degree increases my employability as it allows me to gain hands on experience whilst gaining a qualification. I intend to progress onto the BA Top-Up and then progress onto a teacher training course.”

Paul Whittam -FdA Criminology & Criminal Justice

“I studied at Blackburn College doing Public Services before moving to study in the University Centre. I’ve been volunteering at Blackburn YouthZone for 3 months when they started to ask me to cover extra shifts and apply for just the sorts of jobs I’d wanted to do, and already had some experience of, from my volunteering.

I cannot praise the staff at University Centre at Blackburn College enough – I’ve really enjoyed my degree, it’s been absolutely fantastic but very challenging too. My tutor couldn’t have been more helpful – she’s always been there to offer support and in most cases I haven’t even had to ask for help before support has been offered. It’s been top notch.”

Placements & Work Based Learning

University Centre at Blackburn College will make sure that through your studies your employability skills are developed.Having the right employability skills, and the evidence to back these up, can be a huge advantage. In addition to the programme you study on we will also have a number of published events with employers, entrepreneurs and business agencies all aimed at giving you additional opportunities to link to industry.

When you study at University Centre at Blackburn College you’ll more than likely take at least one module in Work Based Learning as an integral part of your course. All Foundation Degrees have this module and, in other courses, you’ll find elements of Work Based Learning throughout your studies too – but not necessarily a dedicated module.

The skills that you’ll learn through Work Based Learning will not only give you real experience but also some of the skills that employers look for when recruiting new members of staff or recent graduates. The more you can get out of your Work Based Learning modules, the better the chances of landing your dream job upon graduation.

Work PlacementsIf you are on a programme such as a foundation degree that has a placement or Work Based Learning built in then you will be encouraged and supported to access a work placement opportunity.

Please note, if you are on a programme that does not have a dedicated Work Based Learning module, there is still support available to help you find a placement or volunteering opportunity. We encourage all students to take advantage of this.

A work placement is normally a compulsory requirement whilst studying for a Foundation Degree. When you complete a work placement you’ll need to be able to show that the tasks you’re working on are relevant to your degree.

Want a flying start?01254 292375 to speak to a placement advisor between 9am - 5pm.

16

Page 17: University Centre at Blackburn College Prospectus 2015

SimulationIn some cases it might not be possible or appropriate for you to practice at the level required in the particular profession you’re studying – take for example the students studying on our Law or Applied Psychology degrees. In these cases we may simulate a work environment to give you all the skills you need to complete your course. In the case of Law, this could be through computer programmes where evidence is submitted to you by experts at different times and you have to apply the Law to the cases in hand. Or it may be that through live-briefs we can simulate a real-life working environment – this is often the case on some of our Art & Design courses.

FlexibiltySometimes the area that you might want to work in could be so specific you arrange for your own Work Based Learning opportunity and then we assess the material you’ve learnt. This can be a great opportunity to specialise in an area that you really want to work in. Before now we have had a student travel to the Philippines to specialise in underwater photography as part of his foundation degree in Photographic Media. So long as you discuss the area you wish to specialise in with us and can prove it’s relevant to your course and the area you want to work in, you can often gain valuable experience and tailor your Work Based Learning module to your needs.

Lauren Dwyer -BA (Hons) Contemporary Fashion

Lauren Dwyer, an aspiring fashion designer from Accrington, is a step closer to her dream job after landing a ’part’ on a top TV show. She will spend her summer break gaining valuable experience, working alongside industry professionals in the costume department of hit ITV soap Emmerdale.

“I can’t wait to get started on my work experience. It’s such a fantastic opportunity and one I’ve been working on getting for almost a year. Everything I’ve designed throughout my course has been themed around some aspect of the entertainment industry. I’d love to work in television when I finish the last year of the course. University Centre at Blackburn College is a great place to study, the tutors are very supportive and are giving me a good grounding for my dream career.”

Students as scholarsWith our academic teams and expert support staff, the University Centre creates a stimulating and inspiring environment in which to carry out your studies.

Throughout the course of your studies a range of thought-provoking activities take place that will take you out of the classroom, ensure you engage with active research and impress graduate recruiters.

Our students have travelled all over the world for research and have been involved in high profile schemes close to home – engaging in research conferences or showcasing their own research to prospective employers.

As an example, graduating students from the BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling & Health) programme showed their original research to 100 guests, including representatives from more than 25 local organisations. The students exhibited their work in poster form, covering topics including the best way to get a full nights’ sleep when you have a newborn baby, the links between Islamic dress and self-esteem and parental perceptions of foster children.

Art & Design students showcase their work at our Annual End of Year Art & Design Show.

This, the highlight of the School of Arts, Humanities and Social Science’s year, is the perfect opportunity to mingle with prospective employers who visit the annual exhibition to scout for graduate talent.

Our courses are designed to prepare you for postgraduate study and we will encourage you to learn and achieve more. Our students progress to a range of institutions to conduct Masters degrees, further research or teacher training. The institutions that students have progressed on to have recently included: London School of Economics, University College London, Lancaster University, Liverpool John Moores University, University of Manchester, Edge Hill University.

Wasim Feroze -BA (Hons) History & Politics

“After College, I went to the University of Manchester but I didn’t enjoy it. I left there and I went to work at the Vue cinema part-time but I had already decided I wanted to pursue an academic career. I looked at UCBC because the degrees are validated by Lancaster University.

I loved the degree. At Blackburn, the small class sizes meant there was more of a personal element and that was a big selling point for me. It was a challenging course but the lecturers were superb and really helpful. I also got the chance to travel around the world and I went to Cape Town and Marrakech. I am now completing my Masters Degree at the University of York as I want to work in an international non-governmental organisation.”

Audrey Spencer -BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology (Counselling & Health)

“I have always been interested in health and eating habits and I decided to pursue my passion. The title of my dissertation was ‘Food Labelling – are the Government targeting the right groups?’ The answer was a resounding ‘no’. I have since been selected to present my research at the British Psychological Society Conference in Birmingham. It will be full of paid researchers for big companies or people studying for PhDs so it’s a huge achievement for me to be alongside them. I will have the chance to talk to like-minded people about my work who may want to use parts of it for their studies or even ask me to extend my research.”

Every year students come back to Blackburn too. In many cases they’ve discovered that the course they applied for elsewhere wasn’t as good as they thought.

Over the course of your time at College you’ll get the opportunity to meet people from the University Centre and find out about all the different opportunities that are on offer. Ikram Ul-haq -BA (Hons) Business Accounting

“I can’t thank University Centre at Blackburn College enough for helping me settle in here.

Not only did they provide me with all the support I needed whilst studying my degree but even helped me register with the doctor and open a bank account. The University Centre at Blackburn College seemed an obvious choice for me as a member of my family had studied here and said the staff and facilities were fantastic.

The class sizes were small and the tutors were all friendly. They pushed everyone to achieve the best grades they could. I achieved a First Class Honours degree and I am now looking to start my professional qualifications in order to progress to being a certified or chartered accountant.”

Iain LakelandBA (Hons) Business Studies

Iain, now 27, was working in insurance and wasn’t quite sure where his future lay. He decided on a Business Studies degree course at University Centre at Blackburn College, while still working, and collected a First Class Honours degree. Since then he hasn’t looked back. The Chorley-born graduate is now a National Account Manager with Danone Waters, the company which owns Evian and Volvic, and is shortly moving to London.

“The degree has given me the chance to work in a variety of cities in the UK and we have bases in 141 different countries so there are options to go abroad as well which I love”.

Sheena CunninghamBA (Hons) Social Care

Sheena has three sons who at the time she graduated were 12 weeks, 14 months and 5 years old. She decided to return to education to help cement her working knowledge of the care home industry.

“It has been a very hectic and chaotic three-years but I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. From the very first lesson I made a conscious decision to dedicate myself to the degree and, as a result, I have been rewarded. I found out I was pregnant in my second year and then again in my third year and it was sometimes difficult juggling my family, being pregnant and working, but I’ve made it through. Having the degree has meant I’ve been able to progress up the ladder and become a Care Co-ordinator at a residential care home and that’s all thanks to University Centre at Blackburn College.”

Hollywood EventSamantha Norse, Jack Murray & Emma Heeks

Hollywood glamour came to Blackburn College as students raised money for the East Lancashire Hospice. A themed night was held at Scholars Restaurant, with the event hosted, managed, catered and created by Year 1 Foundation Degree Hospitality Management (Events Management) students.

Stephanie Haworth, Course Leader, said: “This type of event enables our students to learn hands-on practical skills and, if we’re able to benefit a worthy charity along the way, then it’s even better for both the students and the community. The students were all involved. They worked very hard to create a delicious meal and ensure everyone had a great time.”

Childcare, Young People & Disability

Rachel KeyBA (Hons) Disability Studies (Inclusive Practice)

“After completing my degree I’ve now been offered a full-time job as a Support Assistant at a school in Halifax, supporting a student with additional needs. The degree has really helped me get the job I want to do. The other candidates didn’t have as much experience and none of them knew the background to the subject, or up to date legislation.

Having the degree has really meant I was able to get the job I’ve wanted. This is an industry that people go into without specialist knowledge even though there’s a real need for it. In time I am hoping I might go on to do my PGCE but at the moment I’m getting my first taste of a job I want to do in a primary school which was my goal.”

Yasmeen IlyasFdSc Computing

After applying to different universities and being accepted it was time to choose one. I came to the Open Evening at UCBC and fell in love with the atmosphere here. Having been to many open events before there was no place friendlier or more welcoming than the University Centre.

The facilities were better than some places I had visited. There were fewer students which gives a better advantage to the students as this meant more one and one support, this is something which really captured me.

Life at University Centre at Blackburn College has given me the opportunities to be someone. Coming to Blackburn to further my education is the best decision I have made.”

Creative Arts

Competition Success!Bryan Shuttleworth & Jennifer Conroy

Bryan Shuttleworth and Jennifer Conroy, were both in their third and final year of BA (Hons) Graphic Communication when they won an ‘Outstanding Quality’ YCN Student Award for 2012-2013. YCN, which stands for You Can Now, is an organisation which empowers new creative talent. For their entry to the awards Bryan and Jennifer chose to develop a creative campaign for coffee company Douwe Egberts, a project picked from a wide selection of briefs.

They had to completely re-brand the company and its packaging, product and communication in the UK so it appealed to younger consumers and increased their awareness of the brand, making it more contemporary without losing its heritage and expertise. Both students have since been successful in securing graduate graphic design jobs in local agencies and have used their work on top coffee brand Douwe Egberts in their portfolios.

Emma Sudall -BA (Hons) Photographic Media

“After completing the two year Art & Design BTEC and A Level in Photography at Blackburn College I was faced with the decision of where to complete my degree. I was swayed by the bright lights of London but I knew that my learning at Blackburn College was valuable and I challenged whether this would be matched anywhere else. I made my decision and applied to the FdA in Photographic Media programme at University Centre at Blackburn College. I graduated with a 1st Class Honours Degree in Photographic Media. After graduating from University Centre at Blackburn College, I packed up my treasured possessions along with my camera and moved to East London, where I still live now. Within a few months of settling in, I contacted Wayne Hemingway and began an internship at his design agency, HemingwayDesign. Two years on I am still here and am very much part of the HemingwayDesign team. I work on a broad range of events from the Vintage Festival, London Fashion Weekend, the official party for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.”

Catherine HarringtonBA (Hons) Education Studies

Catherine graduated with an Upper Second Class BA (Hons) Education Studies degree and is now Head of Brand Development at Peter Jackson’s jewellers.

“One day my partner, who was at UCBC, told me to have a look at the courses and I saw one I wanted to do and it fit in perfectly. The course was hard as the one day a week I was in UCBC were long days and I was still working five days a week.

My qualification has helped me to move up to a different role. I remember feeling nervous about coming back to education and all my friends already had degrees - I really needn’t have worried.”

Engineering

Alex Tyrrell BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

Alex Tyrrell has secured a coveted place on a graduate scheme with EDF Energy.

“I never expected to get the job. I couldn’t believe it when they told me I had got it, it was a fantastic feeling as I was up against a lot of other candidates and I can’t wait to start work.”

“It was a brilliant course at UCBC as it was very hands on and there was a lot of practical experience. While the University Centre might not be as big as other Universities, they also have some of the best facilities. When it came to my interview, I had built an electric car as part of my project. A lot of the candidates had done computer-based simulation work but, because I had actually built something, I think it helped me stand out.”

Robert Beardwell -BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering

A Chorley Mechanical Engineering student is celebrating after receiving a first class degree at University Centre at Blackburn College.

Robert Beardwell, from Euxton, studied BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering after completing his HND at College.

“I’ve worked really hard this year so it’s good to know it’s all paid off – it’s great news.

I chose Blackburn for a variety of reasons. First it’s one of the only places in the area that offers a degree in this discipline. I was also really impressed with the facilities at UCBC are impressive and, of course, it’s only a stone’s throw from home.

I know I have a lot to thank University Centre at Blackburn College for.”

Helen Wright FdA Criminology & Criminal Justice

Helen has set up a crisis drop-in centre after her course opened her eyes. Thanks to her FdA in Criminology and Criminal Justice, she is now helping others get their lives back on track.

“I used to be one of those people who would sit behind a television screen saying ‘Why has he only got community service?’ My course at UCBC really opens my eyes. It helped me understand why people commit offences. I have always been a people person, so I have started to help them by opening up a drop-in centre. It’s all hopefully leading up to a full-time job in the future.”

Helen’s work has been recognised by the Greater Manchester Probation Service.

Daisy Nazareth-KayBA (Hons) English Language & Literary Studies

Daisy did not choose UCBC at first but another University. It turned out not to be for her and the tutor encouraged her to try Blackburn.

“I loved the environment at Blackburn. The tutor was supportive and understanding of my situation and encouraged me to attend the lectures. The class was small and invited more class participation and discussion, which is exactly what I wanted from my university experience. I will have completed my degree with a qualification from an institution that is recognised worldwide. I urge anyone who is researching university choices not to ignore those on your doorstep. University Centre at Blackburn College was not my first choice but I am overjoyed that I ended up here.”

Student work turned into a book

Terry McDonough, a lecturer in English Language at University Centre at Blackburn College has turned his students’ work into a book - for the world to see! It is available on iTunes, Google Play and Amazon’s Kindle.

“Last year’s stories were of such a high standard that I decided to collect them in an anthology from my BA (Hons) English Language and Literary Studies students along with those of a few colleagues,” said Terry.

“The Short Story Writing group was incredibly dynamic. It is open to everyone and last year it included young professionals with a passing interest in creative writing to established and retired academics fulfilling a lifelong ambition.”

“In all, I was stunned and surprised by the talent, depth and imaginative scope of the students.”

Danny ByrneBSc (Hons) Community Coaching & Sports Development

Danny called time on his pub career to take a big step into a sports and teaching career. Danny undertook a Foundation Degree, Honours degree and PGCE at University Centre at Blackburn College and is now teaching on the practical elements of the Sports programmes.

“I used to run a series of pubs but, with the recession, it took an unfortunate turn. I decided I needed a change of career and that’s why I went back into education. I always had an interest in sport so I decided to study a degree. I thoroughly enjoyed the course which included sports development, the policies of sport and analysis of a variety of different sports. It was hard work juggling family life and having four years of intense study but it has been worth it and I would recommend going back to education for anyone.”

Lancaster UniversityBlackburn College is an Associate College of Lancaster University. 85% of higher education provision offered at the College is validated by Lancaster University. The College is responsible for the development of academic programmes, assisted by Lancaster University, which are then subject to Lancaster University validation and approval. All new programmes and revisions to existing programmes leading to Lancaster awards require the University’s approval. The University conducts institutional evaluations and programme reviews every five years.

University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)Some of our courses are approved by the University of Central Lancashire. These include our Teacher Training and Health & Personal Training Foundation degree. There are numerous opportunities for students on these courses as you’ll be able to enjoy all the facilities that students studying on the main UCLan campus are entitled to. You’ll be able to join welcome events and get involved with the University of Central Lancashire’s Student Union. General Entry RequirementsApplicants are normally expected to have completed a Level 3 qualification, (ie A-levels or a vocational qualification) and a minimum of 3 GCSEs or equivalent including Maths and English. Some courses have specific requirements. Applicants without the standard entry requirements, who can demonstrate relevant work / life experience will be considered on an individual basis, and may be asked to attend an interview.

The general entry requirements give an indication of the number of UCAS tariff points you are likely to be asked for on each course. If you are not familiar with the UCAS tariff you should visit www.ucas.com which lists qualifications and the points related to them.

DegreesOur minimum entry requirement for Degree level study at UCBC is 200 UCAS tariff points. Some qualifications may entail additional entry criterion. Such is the case in Engineering Honours degrees where the majority of the UCAS points should be attained from directly relevant subjects. In other courses, specific entry criteria are required – such as an A Level Grade Cs or above in English for our BA (Hons) English Language & Literary Studies degree. In all cases you should check the course entry criteria online for full details.

Foundation Degrees and Higher National DiplomasOur minimum entry requirement for Foundation Degree or HND level study is 120 UCAS tariff points. Some courses, including some Sports and Computing courses, require 160 UCAS points upon entry. In all cases you should check the course entry criteria online for full details.

Higher National CertificatesOur minimum entry requirement for HNC level study is 80 UCAS tariff points. In all cases you should check the course entry criteria online for full details as some contain additional criterion.

Top Up DegreesFor all Lancaster University top-up programmes, admittance onto the programme is through completion of a corresponding Lancaster University validated programme only. This must meet the subject requirements of the Top Up programme. This makes it likely that your Foundation Degree will have been studied at University Centre at Blackburn

College. For programmes validated by the University of South Wales and the University of Cumbria, progression on to the Top Up programme could be possible with entry qualifications validated by institutions other than the University of South Wales or the University of Cumbria.

Additional Selection CriteriaMeeting the minimum entry requirement for a course does not guarantee a place. Academic achievement is only one of many factors taken into account when assessing an application. When considering an application we take into account your grades, predicted grades, reference and Personal Statement. From your Personal Statement we take into account your motivation and commitment to succeed and any relevant experience you may have. In addition to this some courses invite applicants to interview and may ask for a portfolio of appropriate work, and this forms part of the application process.

Mature StudentsA considerable number of our student body is made up of students 21 and over. It is never too late to return to study and we welcome applications from mature students. If you do not have the standard entry requirements you may have gained knowledge and skills from relevant work or life experience and therefore we would consider your application on an individual basis. We would take into account your experiences and we may ask you to attend an interview to discuss this in more detail.

DBS ClearanceIn addition to academic entry requirements, if you are accepted onto any course where you may conduct a placement or come into contact with young people or vulnerable adults (for example Early Childhood Studies) you will be required to have a satisfactory criminal check via the Disclosure Barring Service (the new name for a CRB check). There is normally a charge for completing the DBS disclosure procedure. You should see the individual course entry criteria online for details of which courses require a DBS check.

Student Finance Students do not need to pay their tuition fees upfrontEligible UK (home) and EU students will be able to borrow the full cost of their tuition fees from the government as a Tuition Fee Loan. This money is paid directly to the College on the student’s behalf, and the student only repays this loan once they have finished university and are earning over £21,000 a year.

Tuition FeesIn 2015, the University Centre will charge a fee of £7,500 per annum for full-time HNC/HND, Foundation Degrees and Degree Courses. The full-time PGCE fee will be £6,000 (amounts are subject to increases in line with inflation in following years). For part-time course fees see the website:

www.blackburn.ac.uk/part-time-fees

Tuition Fee Loans• Eligible students (Home/EU) will be able

to borrow the full cost of tuition from the government in the form of a Tuition Fee Loan.

Government SupportGovernment support for living costs is available to UK (home) students in the form of a Maintenance Grant and a Maintenance Loan.

Maintenance Grants • Students from households with an income

of up to £25,000 per annum can expect to qualify for a grant of £3,387 per annum

• Students from households with an income of between £25,000 and £42,620 per annum can expect to qualify for a grant of between £50 and £3,387

• Maintenance Grants do not need to be paid back, but do reduce the level of Maintenance Loan a student is entitled to.

Maintenance Loans• Up to £5,740 per annum is available for

students who live away from home and study at a university outside of London

• Up to £4,565 per annum will be available for students who live in the family home

• Students under 60 years old from the UK studying their first undergraduate degree, regardless of what their level of household income is, can receive a basic Maintenance Loan.

Special Support GrantThe Special Support Grant replaces the Maintenance Grant for people who, as full time students, can claim income-related benefits. The Special Support Grant is not repayable.

The Special Support Grant is means-tested in the same way as the Maintenance Grant, so it is dependent on household income, however, it does not reduce the amount of Maintenance Loan that the student is entitled to.

Examples of students who may be eligible for the Special Support Grant include: lone (single) parents; students who have a partner who is also a student and one or both of them are responsible for a child or young person under 20 who is in full-time education below higher education level; students who have certain disabilities. Students aged 60+ also receive a Special Support Grant.

Loan RepaymentsThe amount graduates pay each month is related to what a graduate earns and not what a graduate owes.

• Students will only be required to start paying back loans once they have graduated from (or left) university and are earning over £21,000

• For example, if the graduate earns £25,000 per annum they will pay back £30 per month

• Loan repayments will be deducted directly from salary, normally through Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

• Any loans which remain outstanding after 30 years will be written off.

At UCBC we promote an Inclusive Culture for Learning. We actively ensure access to all areas for all students. One in five people may be classified as having a disability. If you are that one in five, we are committed to ensuring that any disability you might face should not be a barrier to studying here at the University Centre. As individuals every student matters to us.

A disability may be any condition that has a significant impact upon your day to day life and subsequently your ability to undertake study. If you experience any physical, medical or well being and mental health condition which may impact upon your studies please do not hesitate to contact us so we can explore how best we can support you.

The University Centre selects students on academic and work related criteria so declaring a disability on your UCAS form will not affect your application for a place with us. We would encourage you to contact us as early as possible. Notifying us at the application stage will enable us to take in to consideration your preferred means for communication or to make adjustments for you in accessing our campus, admission interviews or entry tests, accommodation, curriculum , lectures or course assessment.

We can arrange to meet you during the summer or when you start your course, to offer personalised orientation of the campus and our facilities. We can also arrange your support in preparation for enrolment and Freshers’ week and to ensure any personal arrangements such as equipment or evacuation plans are in place.

Even if you have not decided which University to attend, or which course yet, our Advisers are happy to receive your call to facilitate you in making informed decisions about your potential support requirements.

Be assured we are aware that information relating to your health or disability is personal to you. If you choose to disclose a disability we will only share information where it is necessary for the benefit of your studies. We will discuss with you what information you would like to share, with whom and for what purpose.

What will my timetable look like?Enrolling at University is an important step in your life. Indeed, it is the moment to make decisive choices for your future.

Of course, you’ll have to do work in your own time at home or through private study yourself too.

Please note that these schedules are only examples to give you an idea of how your week may look – each course has a specific timetable and our Admissions team will be able to help you more.

Below are some examples of when you might be expected to be in classes, depending on whether you choose to study full or part-time.

In this example, a real-life one from a Sports degree programme, you could study as well as work part-time and certainly may find you are able to work in the afternoons as the majority of timetabled sessions take place in the morning. You’ll also see there are no sessions on a Thursday and a Friday.

In this example, a real-life one from an Engineering programme, you can see that the sessions are more about throughout the week. In this example you might find it easier to study at the University Centre in the library during one of the breaks between modules. You may find this approach better if studying at home is difficult.
