THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ

The University of Alcalá (UAH) is a publicinstitution founded by Cardinal Cisneros in1499. One of Europe’s oldest universities, itsinfluence has been felt both near - it is one ofthe earliest examples of a planned universitytown- and far (its articles of constitution haveserved as a model for various Latin Americanuniversities). Its alumni include some of themost famous names of Spanish culture, suchas Lope de Vega, Francisco de Quevedo andTirso de Molina. Alcalá de Henares was alsothe birthplace of Cervantes, the creator of thegreatest figure in Spanish literature, DonQuixote de la Mancha. In recognition both ofits cultural importance and its impressive

architectural inheritance, in 1998 the Universitywas declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located in the center of Spain, the university is30 kilometres east of Madrid and is easilyaccessible (20 kilometres) from Madrid’sBarajas airport.

The cradle of Cervantes is alive with theactivities of the university and offers anexceptional environment in which to pursueacademic goals. Alcalá de Henares also offersnumerous opportunities for enjoying cultureand the arts.

Every year the university’s ancient assemblyhall, the “Paraninfo Universitario”, plays host

to the most important Spanish literary awardceremony, the Cervantes Prize. Also, jointlywith Spain’s Public Ombudsman, every twoyears in the same assembly hall the Universityof Alcalá awards the King of Spain Prize forHuman Rights, in recognition and encouragementof outstanding contributions made by Spanishand Latin American organizations to thedefence and advancement of human rightsand democratic values.

Today, the University of Alcalá is a moderninstitution which offers a wide range ofdegrees in all fields of knowledge. It is alsoone of the first universities in Spain to be fullyadapted to the European Higher EducationArea.

The university presently enrolls nearly 30,000students, two-thirds of whom are reading forundergraduate degrees taught by a teaching

staff of 1,800 professors, lecturers andresearchers. The university is also proud of itsmodern and efficient administration, attendedby approximately 800 service staff.

Students have access to up-to-date facilitiessuch as the On-Line University, which makesavailable teaching materials for more than 900subjects. Alcalá also houses 26 fully equippedcomputer rooms, and provides WIFI networksin all buildings, along with a laptop computerlending service.

The university has 16 libraries seating 2,700readers and a large digital collection whichincludes over 16,000 different e-journals. Theuniversity’s teaching and research staff alsoenjoy access from their work centres to themore than 10 million volumes held in theNational Library Repository located on theuniversity’s Science and Technology Campus.

WHAT AND WHERE CAN I STUDY AT THEUNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ?

The University of Alcalá offers degrees in fivebranches of knowledge: Arts and Humanities,Social and Legal Sciences, Sciences, HealthSciences, and Engineering and Architecture.Its approximately 20,000 undergraduatestudents are spread across its threecampuses:

A university with a rich humanistic tradition

The Historical Campus houses the humanities,architecture, the social sciences and law.

In the vanguard of science and technology

Situated on the city’s outskirts, the Scienceand Technology Campus is home to theSciences, including the Health professions,and Engineering.

An expanding university

25 kilometres to the east, the GuadalajaraCampus is well-connected with both Alcalá deHenares and Madrid. A variety of degrees in

the Social Sciences, Health Sciences andArchitecture are taught here. A new campusis presently under construction, as is theGuadalajara Science and Technology Park,which will have modern, sustainable buildingsoccupying a total area of 70,000 squaremetres.

WHAT ABOUT POSTGRADUATE DEGREES?

Scholarships and grants are available toread for most UAH degrees.

More than 9,500 students enrol in theUniversity of Alcalá for their postgraduatetraining.

The University of Alcalá offers more than200 postgraduate degrees, comprisingresearch masters, taught masters, doctoralprogrammes and specially designed expertprogrammes, all adapted to the EuropeanHigher Education Area (EHEA). It is one ofthe Spanish universities with the largestnumber of graduate degrees and lifelongongoing education courses.

All degree programmes include workexperience internships in companies orresearch institutes.

Around 600 agreements with universitiesfrom five continents allow our students tocomplete part of their degrees in othercountries.

The UAH offers scholarships and grants forpostgraduates such as the Miguel deCervantes Scholarships or grants for theBenjamin Franklin University Research

Institute for North American Studies.

HOW CAN I LEARN SPANISH LANGUAGEAND SPANISH CULTURE AT THE UNIVERSITYOF ALCALÁ?

Spanish language and Spanish culture aretaught at the University of Alcalá (UAH) in threedifferent programmes, which by themselves or asa whole satisfy the needs of our potentialstudents.

Alcalingua is the UAH’s Center for studyingSpanish as a Foreign Language. It offersboth directly-taught and distance-learningclasses during the fall and spring semestersas well as during the summer term. It alsoprovides courses in Spanish for specificpurpose, such as Spanish for business,Spanish for tourism, etc. Alcalingua is

moreover one of the sites which awards theofficial Diploma of Spanish as a ForeignLanguage (DELE).

The Franklin Institute teaches courses inSpanish Language and Culture for foreignstudents in both Spanish and Englishduring the fall and spring semesters inaddition to the summer term. Regularclasses are complemented with a variety ofcultural activities, such as visits tomuseums, theatres, governmental institutions,trips to historical cities, etc. Its calendarand grading systems are adapted to thoseof the American university system.

Foreign students can also join regularundergraduate and graduate classes at the

University of Alcalá as visiting or exchangestudents if they are attending a regularprogramme at another university and candemonstrate knowledge of Spanish languageat a level equal to or higher than level B1 ofDELE. Students interested in Spanishlanguage and/or Spanish culture usuallytake courses pertaining to the B.A. degreesof Hispanic Studies, History, Humanitiesand/or Modern Languages and Translation.

COMMITMENT TO RESEARCH

The University is firmly committed to researchas the engine of innovation and change.

It is ranked among Spain’s top universitiesin terms of number of doctoral theses,patents and research output1.

Through its Science and Technology Parks,the university fosters relations between theacademic world and the business community,thus fomenting the creation of innovativecompanies in R+D intensive sectors.

In collaboration with Spain’s Council forScientific Research, the university is host to

the Prince of Asturias Institute of MolecularMedicine and the Ramón y Cajal Institute ofBiomedicine, and, in collaboration with theMadrid Regional Government, the MadridInstitute for Advanced Water Research.

Through its own institutes and otherresearch support centres, the universitygives its backing to interdisciplinaryresearch in the fields of the social sciencesand humanities.

The university boasts four associated

teaching hospitals where students may dotheir internships: the Prince of AsturiasUniversity Hospital, next to the Faculty ofMedicine; the Ramón y Cajal Hospital andthe Gómez Ulla Central Military Hospital,both in Madrid; and Guadalajara’s UniversityHospital.

The UAH is strongly committed toenvironmental responsibility andsustainability. Part of this effort involvesthe Juan Carlos I Botanical Garden, a greenspace occupying 260,000 square metres onthe Science and Technology Campus andhome to more than 12,000 species. TheUAH also manages a project for researching,preserving and disseminating knowledgeabout plant-life and the environment.

SUPPORT

The UAH provides a wide range of guidanceservices. These include individualised pedagogicalattention, beginning with the assignment of apermanent personal tutor when students firstenrol in the university.

Also available are professional PsychologicalServices and Educational Workshops whichadvise students regarding study techniquesand ways to improve achievement levels.

In modern residence halls (either in sharedflats or individual apartments), all equippedwith common spaces for relaxation, studyand cooking, as well as Internetconnections, laundry and maintenanceservice.

Also available is the pioneering inter-generational “Vive y Convive” programmethrough which students share housing withelderly people. We offer free flat searchand flat share services.

WHAT CAN I DO WHEN NOT STUDYING?

The welcoming nature of the Spanish peopleand, more particularly, of the inhabitants ofAlcalá and Guadalajara, the lively studentscene and the local cultural and leisureattractions are all good reasons for choosingthe University of Alcalá.

The university’s own installations and otherfacilities providing special access for UAHstudents make available a wide variety ofsports: aikido, fencing, horse-riding, archery,volleyball, athletics, rugby, climbing, tennis,basketball, golf, swimming, sailing, diving,hiking, mountaineering, and winter sports, toname but a few.

The Writing School, Foreign LanguageCentre, Language Laboratories, voluntaryactivities, massage and physiotherapyroom, film club, orchestra, choir, universitytraditional music group … these are justsome of the options available to make yourtime at the university as much fun aspossible, as well as personally enriching.

Quality train and bus connections betweenthe three campuses and facilities forrenting bicycles.

Both Alcalá de Henares and Guadalajarahave a large student population and offermany leisure and recreational options(cinemas, theatres, museums, restaurants,bars, nightclubs …).

The University of Alcalá is convenientlysituated a half hour from Madrid by bus,train, or private transport. Madrid providesall the opportunities for leisure one wouldexpect to find in one of Europe’s leadingcapital cities.

Excellent communications by coach or highspeed train allow UAH students to reachthe rest of Spain rapidly and comfortably(Toledo, Córdoba, Granada, Seville, Barcelona,Valencia…).
