1 DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL MEDICINE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND DENTISTRY UNIVERSITY OF BERGEN Newsletter No. 8, Vol. 2, 30. April 2014 Publication quality at K1 In 2013, K1 published 326 academic publications. Of these, 59 (18%) were of Level 2. The num- ber of publications and number in relation to permanent academic positions are key research parameters at the department. Nevertheless, we must also pursue high quality publication. There are several criteria for research and publication quality. National groups of leading professionals have selected the magazines within each discipline which they consider as the best, publish the most important research results and have the greatest impact. These journals represent level 2, and they should constitute about 20 % of the volume of publications in the field. Impact factor is to be empha- sized in the selection. When K1 publishes 18% at level 2, it is lower than the average. The level 2-percentage has been drop- ping at the faculty in recent years. The number of publications in clinical and para clinical subjects has increased, which is good. Nevertheless, level 1 publications is the most increasing, and the proportion of high-quality articles has fallen. The proportion of level 2 publications has also budgetary impact for both the university and health authorities. A large number of publications at K1 is part of Ph.D. work. This is good, but we know that there is often a pressure to produce a sufficient number of publications within a limited period. There are usually so- me time between initial submission to final acceptance when you are ambitious with regard to which journal to submit to. The best journals have a demanding peer review. Such conditions can affect the aspirations with respect to journal quality. The most important thing is that good research results actually are published. But quality counts. It is worrying if research groups in decreasing degree are featured in the leading journals. K1 and the medical community in Western Norway as a whole has too few level 2 publications. International reputa- tion is linked to quality as well as quantity. In the overview of publications in K1-nytt we will from now on show which are level 2 publications. You might consider this as a call to gather and process your main research results so well that the leading journals say ”yes please”. Nils Erik Gilhus Head of department

Publication quality at K1

In 2013 K1 published 326 academic publications Of these 59 (18) were of Level 2 The num-

ber of publications and number in relation to permanent academic positions are key research

parameters at the department Nevertheless we must also pursue high quality publication

There are several criteria for research and publication quality National groups of leading professionals

have selected the magazines within each discipline which they consider as the best publish the most

important research results and have the greatest impact These journals represent level 2 and they

should constitute about 20 of the volume of publications in the field Impact factor is to be empha-

sized in the selection

When K1 publishes 18 at level 2 it is lower than the average The level 2-percentage has been drop-

ping at the faculty in recent years The number of publications in clinical and para clinical subjects has

increased which is good Nevertheless level 1 publications is the most increasing and the proportion

of high-quality articles has fallen The proportion of level 2 publications has also budgetary impact for

both the university and health authorities

A large number of publications at K1 is part of PhD work This is good but we know that there is often

a pressure to produce a sufficient number of publications within a limited period There are usually so-

me time between initial submission to final acceptance when you are ambitious with regard to which

journal to submit to The best journals have a demanding peer review Such conditions can affect the

aspirations with respect to journal quality

The most important thing is that good research results actually are published But quality counts It is

worrying if research groups in decreasing degree are featured in the leading journals K1 and the

medical community in Western Norway as a whole

has too few level 2 publications International reputa-

tion is linked to quality as well as quantity

In the overview of publications in K1-nytt we will from

now on show which are level 2 publications You

might consider this as a call to gather and process

your main research results so well that the leading
