heading back to school. Something that often gets overlooked is what our kids snack on at school. A snack is a small meal to hold us over in- between meals. At school this is done during a critical academic time in their day, morning recess. Making sure their snack consists of protein will help them focus on learning. Protein gives the brain and body the important fuel it needs to get through the day. Some great protein kid friendly snacks to send to school are:

• string cheese • greek yogurt • nuts • peanut butter

sandwich • apples and nut butter • hard boiled eggs • trail mix with soy

nuts • low-fat salami and

cheese • veggies and humus • turkey or ham roll up

Keeping your kids snacks high in protein and low in sugar will help keep their tummy's and their brain's happy and ready to learn.

A new mosquito surveillance and control program gets underway this week in Clovis which aims to strike down populations of Aedes aegyptimosquitos, said Anthony Cornel, a UC Davis entomologist based at the UC Kearney Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Parlier. Ae. aegypti made a surprise appearance in three California communities last year - Clovis, Madera and San Mateo - and to Cornel's disappointment, survived the winter. Now mosquito abatement officials are actively tracking and eradicating the pest before it develops a strong foothold in California. Not all mosquitos are alike. Certain mosquitos have the ability to spread certain viruses. The illnesses spread by Ae. aegypti - yellow fever, dengue fever and more recently Chikungunya - were never given much thought in California, until now. To test a new weapon in the arsenal against Ae. aegypti, Cornel is working with Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District personnel to deploy 146 mosquito death traps in the front yards of homes in a neighborhood east of Clovis Elementary School in Clovis. The traps were supplied by the Centers for Disease Control and made by hand in Puerto Rico. (continue reading...)

Mighty mite may bring hope against notorious weed A recent find in El Dorado County has weed scientists, land managers, foresters, botanists, and plant conservationists throughout Northern California really excited over a tiny insect-like animal. The broom gall mite (Aceria genistae) which is actually not an insect but more closely related to spiders and ticks has

recently taken residence on the invasive plant Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius). Scotch broom was introduced into North America in the mid-1800s from Europe as an ornamental and for erosion control. The bright yellow flowers and rapid growth has made it a prized ornamental however its ability to out-compete native plants and form dense stands has also made it one of California's worst wildland weeds. Since its introduction it has invaded millions of acres throughout the golden state. The exciting news about the mighty mite is that it attacks Scotch broom by forming small growths on the plants buds which greatly reduces the ability for it to grow and reproduce. In some areas, the gall mite has even killed large stands of broom. Native to Europe, the mite was first found on Scotch broom in the Tacoma, Washington and Portland, Oregon regions in 2005. Since that time the mite has become established throughout western Washington and Oregon and even into parts of British Columbia. As of last summer the mite had been found as far south as Ashland, Oregon with no occurrences in California.(continue reading...)
