Student Legal Services
What is Student Legal Services?
Student Legal Services is a professional legal office that has
been providing legal assistance to the students of the
University of Florida since 1977.
Funded by Student Government through Activities and
Service fees.
Student Legal Services is staffed by four licensed attorneys
who are available to offer students assistance in
understanding and solving their legal problems.
What is Student Legal Services?
Preventing legal problems through education is a primary
goal of Student Legal Services. We offer:
Lectures
Workshops
Presentations
distribution of information and materials on a variety of legal issues.
Any resident hall, fraternity, sorority, student group, organization, faculty or
staff member can arrange a program.
Services Provided
Student Legal Services provides students a full range of
typical legal services
Advice and consultation
Drafting of letters and legal documents
Conferences and settlement negotiations
with adverse parties
Legal research
Review & interpretation of legal documents
Drafting and filing of legal documents
Limited representation in Alachua County court.
Free notary services
In-Court Representation
Student Legal Services provides in-court representation in
Alachua County for:
Landlord-Tenant Cases
Sealing or Expunction of Criminal Records
Dissolution of Marriage
Name Changes
Adoptions
Advice and Assistance
Student Legal Services provides advice and assistance for:
Criminal Charges
Criminal Traffic
Insurance
Consumer Matters, such as:
defective products/services, warranties,
contracts, credit, and identity theft.
Property Damage
Traffic Citations
Preparation of Affidavits
Powers of Attorney
Living Wills
Services Not Provided
Cases not covered by Student Legal Services:
Admiralty
Bankruptcy
Business Activity of Student
Immigration and Naturalization
Incorporations and Partnerships
Income Tax
Patent, Trademark, and Copyright
Personal Injury
Real Estate
Wills and Trusts
Limitations
Student Legal Services cannot provide assistance with the
following matters:
Disputes between University of Florida students.
Claims involving the University of Florida, the State of Florida, or any of
its agencies.
Matters the attorney believes to be clearly frivolous, without merit, or
that would otherwise violate the rules regulating the Florida Bar.
Disputes in which the amount in controversy is under $100.00 or exceeds
$15,000.00.
Court representation outside of Alachua County.
Eligibility for Services
All full-time University of Florida students are eligible for
free legal services. Student is responsible for court costs &
any other associated fees due outside of our office.
Full-time students for purposes of program eligibility are:
o Undergraduate students enrolled in 12 or more semester hours.
o Graduate students enrolled in 9
or more semester hours.
o Students enrolled in 6 or more summer
semester hours.
Gator 1 Spouse/Domestic Partner Registration
Verification of eligibility for a spouse or domestic partner
card is performed by Student Legal Services between 8:30
a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
