• Ethical issues such as • Should the internet be regulated? (paper at

• From the New York Times (quoted on the Information Society web page)

• “By some estimates, there are more than 30,000 people patrolling the Web in China, helping form one of the world's most sophisticated Internet filtering systems. But while China's huge Internet police force is busy deleting annoying phrases like 'free speech' and 'human rights,' experts say that Wild West capitalism, crime, piracy, pornography and other scourges of the real economy in China have moved into the virtual one.”

Recommended booksRecommended books

• The recommended text books are:• Oates, B.J. (2006) Researching Information Systems and Computing.

– This book provides a broad overview of the research process and research models applicable to IS and Computing. It covers issues such as ethics and participants, survey design and other techniques. It is a good book for qualitative research methods.

• Field, A (2005) Discovering Statistics using SPSS, 2nd Edition, Sage Publishing, London (ISBN 0-7619-4452-4) *– This book provides excellent detailed descriptions of the different

statistical tests. This is good value for such a comprehensive treatment of statistics in a very clear and enjoyable style. You do not have to use SPSS to gain from reading this book.

What is emotional What is emotional intelligence (EI) and how intelligence (EI) and how

important is it in the important is it in the workplace?workplace?

• EI is a relatively new field in human behaviour and personality research. Specifically EI “is involved in the capacity to perceive emotions, assimilate emotion-related feelings, understand the information of these emotions and manage them” (Mayer, Caruso & Salovey, 1999).

• It may influence our academic achievement, work performance and our ability to communicate effectively. Emotional intelligence can help solve everyday problems, build and sustain interpersonal relationships and possibly our ability to make moral decisions.

• This introductory seminar is aimed at people at all levels in the workplace, but especially those involved in Human Resources and recruitment. The seminar will explain what EI is, why it is important to individuals and organisations and how awareness and management of emotions in the workplace can be enhanced through training.

The ability-based EI The ability-based EI modelmodel

• Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer's model proposes that EI includes 4 types of abilities: – Perceiving emotions — the ability to detect and decipher emotions in

faces, pictures, voices, and cultural artifacts- including the ability to identify one’s own emotions. Perceiving emotions represents a basic aspect of emotional intelligence, as it makes all other processing of emotional information possible.

– Using emotions — the ability to harness emotions to facilitate various cognitive activities, such as thinking and problem solving. The emotionally intelligent person can capitalize fully upon his or her changing moods in order to best fit the task at hand.

– For a summary of EI and the workplace see presentation on http://osiris.sunderland.ac.uk/~cs0lhu/Lynne/eiresearch.htm

Communication and Communication and trusttrust

• There is evidence from the research literature that people factors and communication failures are high on a list of reasons why projects fail (including large IT projects) (Edwards and Humphries, 2005).
