The University of Tasmania is committed to improving the tax literacy of our community and aims to assist unrepresented taxpayers in meeting or complying with their taxation affairs.If you need help with your tax affairs and do not have representation, the University of Tasmania Tax Clinic is a good place to start.

AssistanceThe University of Tasmania Tax Clinic can assist you when:

• you need some free advice on a taxation matter

• you are uncertain of how to respond to a notice from the ATO

• you require assistance with your tax affairs such as:– meeting, reporting, or filing requirements

– applying for remissions of penalties

– negotiating a payment plan with the ATO

– assistance with computing tax liability

• you are dissatisfied with an assessment and want to know what your rights are

• you have an ongoing issue with the ATO

• you need some assistance in understanding how to complete your tax return

• what to improve your knowledge and understanding of taxation law to improve your business.

The University of Tasmania Tax Clinic is a friendly, student-run clinic where you will receive advice from University of Tasmania Tasmanian School of Business and Economics students under the supervision of experienced tax practitioners.

Are you eligible?You are eligible to receive assistance from the University of Tasmania if you:

• do not have a tax agent (are unrepresented)

• are a student, individual or small business entity.

Please contact us if you are unsure of your eligibility to see if we can still assist you.

What happens next?Once you have spoken with one of our student volunteers, you will be invited to attend an initial meeting with a member of the University of Tasmania Tax Clinic staff and a student volunteer, to discuss your matter in greater detail. At the meeting, we will advise on our capacity to assist you or provide an alternative recommendation.
