The Hip and Osteoarthritis

• The hip is one of the largest and most flexible joints in the body

• Lifestyle can be greatly affected by hip arthritis symptoms, resulting in e.g. limited range of motion, swelling and pain in the hip, groin, leg and back

• Symptoms may come and go, developing gradually over months or years

• Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic condition of the hip, with estimated prevalence of 27% in western countries, and symptomatically affecting as many as 8.3% of men and 11.3% of women, over 45 years of age (CDC population study)

• Hip OA is a degenerative disease (although it incorporates growth of osteophytes and irregular cartilage) and is signaled by the mechanical breakdown of the joint, resulting in joint space narrowing and friction between bone and socket

Why an Unloader Hip brace?

• Load dispersion of the superolateral joint areas

• Non-invasive treatment of hip OA patients

Improves activities of daily living

Increased activities have been associated with less hip limitations at later disease stages.

Unloader Hip is indicated for patients diagnosed with mild to moderate OA and can work as a standalone or (preferably) with a multi-modal approach.

How it works

The Unloader Hip provides proprioceptive support through Compression of the affected area

It is designed to reduce load on the hip joint area through external Rotation and Abduction of the femoral head

The modification effect occurs during swing phase, to provide adapted positioning at heel strike

• Make sure that velcro hooks are attached to loop at all times. Use lateral loop while donning, doffing or adjusting garment. Same applies when washing garment

• Fasten Rotation Control Strap to Trousers before donning or, alternatively, have user lie down after donning, while fastening strap

• Push down and slide to engage Alligator Clip on Button Hook

• Always put Left Belt Arm over the Right Belt Arm when closing Wraps

• When adjusting the Belt Arm length, in case of curvy hips, align cut so that Front Closures sit correctly when closing Belt Arms

Initial Fitting

• After fitting the product, the user should experience tight but comfortable fit around the waist and a consistent external rotation while walking.

• Ideally, the SmartDosing Dial should be at 5 when optimal fit has been obtained so that the user can increase and decrease tension upon need.

• In case of too little rotation, shorten the Rotation Control Strap by detaching strap from proximal Alligator Clip and cutting until ideal tension is obtained with Dial at ‚5‘

• In case of loose fit around waist, extract spooling plate from Pulley System and wind thread on plate in Zig-Zag pattern. Unwind in case of too much tightness around waist with Front Closures correctly in place.

• Due to the chronic nature of Hip OA it may be 4-6 weeks before muscles begin to adapt to the different position and load dispersion of the brace, therefore, it can take up to 4-6 weeks before effect of brace kicks in

• It is recommended to wear the brace for a short amount of time to begin with, and increase time in use gradually

Always fasten Hooks (highlighted in gray) on designated Loop areas • While donning• While doffing• While in use• Before washing

This will prevent premature damage to the soft good materials and to clothing in general

User Guide – Tips & Tricks for Enhanced Durability

• Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight

• Avoid chlorinated or salt water, rinse with fresh water in case it occurs

• Keep in mind that fabric softener and tumble drying may permanently damage product elasticity and color

• In case of unpleasant garment odor, try adding tea tree oil drops to the wash cycle

• Always air dry

• Use wasbag, brace can be washed with all straps attached as long as velcros are securely placed before washing

Unloader Hip Trousers: 12 month limited warranty

Straps and pads: 6 month limited warranty

Signs of excessive wear and tear and/or wrong product handling (not covered by warranty):• Cloudy stains, brittle or loose elastic material, fabric softener scent• Discoloration• General undoing of stitching• General fraying

With proper handling, the product can be expected to last up to 18 months
